Configuring Networks in STEP 7 Projects

To enable stations to communicate with one another, the necessary networks must be configured in the STEP 7 projects. Configuring a network or subnet means: 1. 2. You create one or more subnets of the required type in the project You define properties of the subnets; the default settings are usually sufficient You establish a logical connection between the stations and the subnet You establish communication connections.

3. 4.

The SIMATIC Manager NETPRO function is a user-friendly, graphical tool for configuring and documenting networks.

The table shows examples of different types of networks which are discussed on the following pages to illustrate how you can represent different configurations in a STEP 7 project.

In the simplest case, your system will consist of SIMATIC S7 stations that you want to link together in one subnet, using Industrial Ethernet for example. To do this, you create an Ethernet object in the STEP 7 project. Stations created in the same project refer to this object as soon as they are configured as network nodes.

In addition to SIMATIC S7 stations you may have SIMATIC S5 and nonSIMATIC stations connected to Industrial Ethernet in your system. You can select SIMATIC S5 stations direct. You enter non-SIMATIC stations in your project as Other Stations.

The different functions of the stations or the size of the system may make it necessary to have more than one network. You can put all the subnets in one STEP 7 project. This is the simplest way of configuring the stations for communication.

More than one subnet can be handled in one project. Each station is only created once in the project. A station can be included in more than one subnet by assigning the CPs accordingly.

For complex networks it may be more practical to divide the management of the stations into different projects. In order to be able to address stations in other projects (e.g. Production 2), you also enter them as Other Stations in the rest of the projects (e.g. Production 1). One subnet can be divided into several projects.

If the different functions of the stations or the size of the system make it necessary to have different types of network and you want to use different projects to manage them, the stations in other projects can also be accessed by configuring Other Stations.

If the different functions of the stations or the size of the system make it necessary to link subnets to one another via a WAN or a router, the stations in other subnets can be accessed by configuring "Other Stations". The screenshot below shows the NETPRO representation if the stations in both subnets are managed in the same project.
