PartTwo of FILMINDIA (July 25-August 23) will examine the historyof Indiancinema, beginning with the firstextant silent films, made about 1913. This historical portionof the exhibition will presentsome 20 films, both full-lengthfeaturesand film excerpts, thatover the years have capturedthe Indianimagination.Few are known to the Americanmovie-goer. ErikBarnouw, who is the guest-curator PartTwo of FILM for INDIA, will deliver a lectureon Indiancinema at the Museumon July 28, and will chaira symposium at The Asia Society on July 29. PartThreeof FILM INDIA(September17-October 15) will consist of a selection of contemporary Indianfilms, includingover 20 full-length featurefilms, as well as several shortsubjects. It is the hope of the exhibition's organizersthatthis section will help familiarizethe Americanpublic with the vitality of the alternate,or "young," cinema of Indiatoday. Filmmakerssuch as MrinalSen, Shyam Benegal, Girish Kamad, and Mani Kaul will be represented.Several of the filmmakersto be includedin this portionof FILM INDIAwill be present and will participatein audiencediscussions to be held at the Museum and a symposium at the Asia Society. Details on these events will be announcedin a forthcomingCalendar. After its runat the Museum, selected versions of FILM INDIA travelto nine otherAmericancities: will Washington,D.C., Berkeley, Madison, Austin, Los Angeles, Boston, Minneapolis, Denver, and Chicago. FILM INDIAis being underwritten a generousgrant by from the National Endowmentfor the Humanities. INDIAwill be the Almost two years in the planning, FILM most ambitiousand comprehensivepresentation of in Indianfilm ever undertaken the United States. It is vivid testimonyof the qualityof the work being producedin India. The three-part retrospective,during which some 70 films will be screened in the Museum's Roy and Niuta Titus Auditorium,will, it is hoped, this encourage-in countrya greaterawarenessand of appreciation Indiancinema, both past and present. FILM INDIAis being directedby AdrienneMancia, of Curator Film at the Museum;MurielPeters, Director of Film and Broadcastingfor The Asia Society; and Erik Barnouw,Director, Motion Picture, Broadcastingand RecordedSound Division of The Libraryof Congress. Cosponsorsof the exhibition are The Museumof Modem Art, The Asia Society, and the Indian Directorateof Film Festivals, underthe aegis of the Indo-U.S. Subcommissionon Educationand Culture. INDIA(June25-July 24) The first portionof FILM is a retrospectiveof the complete work of SatyajitRay. "Twenty-five years of Ray's work is a chronicle of more thana centuryof social change in India," commentsIndianfilm historian,Chidananda Das Gupta. SatyajitRay, a Bengali, was bornin Calcuttain 1921. He came from a culturallyand artisticallydistinguished family: his fatherwas a writerand illustrator,his grandfather writer, painter,printer,illustrator,and a musician. Ray studiedpaintingat Santineketan,the art centerand school of the greatpoet Rabindranath Tagore, where he first readbooks on the cinema. In 1942 he joined the Calcuttaoffice of the Britishadvertisingfirm D. J. Keymaras a commercialartist,doing advertising, book illustration,and design; laterhe became the firm's Art Director. In 1945 he was commissioned to illustrate a children'sedition of the novel Pather Panchali, and the idea of turningit into a film began to take hold of him. In 1947 Ray and his friendsfoundedthe Calcutta Film Society and wrote articleson the problemsof Indiancinema. Returningto Indiain 1950 aftera six-monthstay in England, where he had immersed himself in the cinema, Ray began to put his longdreamedof projecttogether. Filming mostly on weekends, always shortof capital, Ray completed PatherPanchali in 1955, afterobtainingthe government supportthatenabledhim to finish his film. Interestinglyenough, PatherPanchali, the story of the young boy Apu's life in an Indianvillage, had its world premiereat The Museumof ModernArt in May 1955. Ray continuedApu's saga with the films Aparajito(1957) and The Worldof Apu (1959), which, along with Pather Panchali, came to be known as "The Apu Trilogy."The trilogy was based on a modern classic of Bengali literature-a two-volume novel by BibhutiBhusanBandyopadhyay-and accordingto film critic JohnRussell Taylor, "as an adaptation material of from one mediumto another,the trilogy is a model, an outstandingexample of creative rethinking."The trilogy establishedRay's reputationand fixed his cinematic style. Over the years his oeuvre has grown into one of the richestof any director. "Only one or two otherfilm

artistsof his generationcan make masterpiecesthatare so lucid and so inexhaustiblyrich," notes PaulineKael. Ray has demonstrated remarkable a versatilitythat enabledhim to establish and maintaincomplete artistic controlover his films. He has writtenall his own scripts; a trainedmusician, he has composed the scores for many of his films. Beginning with his 1964 film Charulata, which is set in the 1870s and concerns the emotional relationshipbetween a young wife and her husband's artisticcousin, Ray has operatedhis own camera.There is an identifiablegrace to these films and a sympathetic of treatment his characters,be they from the highest or lowest caste, that markshis style. As PaulineKael observed, "SatyajitRay's films can give rise to a more complex feeling of happinessin me thanthe work of any otherdirector,I think it must be because our involvement with his charactersis so directthatwe are caught up in a blend of the fully accessible and the inexplicable, the redolent, the mysterious. We accept the resolutions he effects not merely as resolutionsof the storiesbut as truthsof humanexperience... There is always a residueof feeling that isn't resolved."
