WORLD ’SMAJOR PROBLEM
– CALLSYOUR ATTEN TI ON
World’s major problems are not made
by nature – but the us. We are creating
pollution, environmental damages, and
nuclear explosions. We are damaging
the mother earth. I n the name of
development, we are crusing the f orests
and engulfing vast natural resources.
The biggesproblem confronting us
are man-made problems– are we
seriousto solve them and raise public
awarenessabout them.? One such
problem is child labour.
We conducted a Group D iscussion
among youth on the issue of child l abour
in I ndia. We are thankful to the
participants for part icipating in the group
discussion. We herewith present the
discussion. The purpose here is not to
show what i s right or wrong – but just to
st imulate people to think on these
matters.
G: child’s age is f or education
P : society cannot develop – if children
work in f actories. This i s the age of
studies.
K : upto the age of 14 – is the age of
learning – when the beginning is not
proper – it di sturbs their f uture…
P : they are forced – they are not able to
get what they want…even if they take
admission in govt. school..
K : there is ignorance on the part of
parents, teachers… there is some
irresponsibility on the part of schools.. if
parents are aware there will be no
problem
P :
K : the result i s child l abour.. there are
some children who don’t want to study -
who want to work --- there are girls who
would like to work rather then to study..
P : there is cheap labour f rom business
perspective - .
K : i f there is talk of business, let us talk
about CSR. Child labour is a menace – let
us not promote it on any ground
P : corporate cannot do everything…
K : let the children work in f actories
where they are saf e enough – let the
corporate f und the education of
children…
P : business has to take care of profit s
and then we can talk about social
responsibili ties.
K : Govt. is already f unding poor people’s
education i.. the govt. is already doing
constructive work.
P : why child labour is bad if he is
deprived of education… the child i s
earning… the only problem is they are
working in hazardous industries.
P : children don’t want to study – so
there is problem.
B: sometimes by mistake – there is a
problem .
P : where there is a wil l , there is a way.
B : child don’t have food – they are not
able to study…
H : a child … i s running f or money – he
wins the race … When the Govt. banned
..
B : the question is : good or bad – but the
child labour is sometimes good – the
child who is sharp mind – at a small age
he can do anything – sometimes the will
power…
P : every child should not be deprived of
education. Allow child labour – those
who work in f actories – they are forced
to do so. When education comes, no
child wants to work in f actory..
K : i t is only after an age that the child
realizes that he should have education…
P : what’s wrong if a child works in a
f actory.
K : the base like is that : the child should
not be put to labour. Let us hone the
natural sil ls of the child. All round
development of children.
B: in our country the government gives
f unds f or education of children – this
f und is not properly utilized and
… .children should be educated.
K : children are sensit ive,

H : there is a ban and there is… our
police and our administr ation si not good
B: they are watching..
K : the loopholes are in execution – not
in policies. The execution part is lacking.
T here are so many channels through
which such loopholes are there.
B: sometimes parents don’t agree f or
education of children.
P : we had discussed earl ier.
K : there are some communities which do
not promote girls education
P :the real problem is gir ls ….they are
worst af fected. .. I just t alked – it i s good
– children demand less amount f rom
business perspective – it is a viable
B: according to you, child labour good…
if you have a f actory..children are the
f uture of our country.(discussion between
B and P).
K : there are some situations, when the
children have no option. Sometimes it
may be right..
P : parents expect the children to just
manage their lif e…
H : our education system is responsible
f or al l thi s. Our education system is long
and expensive and we have f ound that …
K : people have to understand that
although there is no immediate benef it –
but there is a benefit in the long run. I s
there any way out?
P : i f parents are educated – the problem
can be solved. ..if today’s kids are getting
education the problem will be solved in
the future.
K : a solution could be - we may f orm a
ref erence group – living in a locality –
N GO and leaders should inf luence
people in the locality and they can
encourage people to send children for
education. ..
P : education is the cure of this problem.
