Classical Problem Solving

Most of the classical decision-making processes developed over many years tend to be based on a structured or stepped approach, designed to facilitate better solutions. Each step or stage can be linked to specific techniques which, individually and in combination, add benefit to the resulting outcome.

Classical Problem Solving Many believe that this step by step approach to decision making produces better decisions. The key being to clearly separate the different stages as they require different types of thinking and analytical processes.

Classical Problem Solving

Define and understand the nature of the problem I Generate alternative ideas for solving the problem I Evaluate the feasibility and acceptability of those ideas I Develop the most favourable ideas I Decide upon the best solution

VM Origins of the Process Larry Miles of General Electric in the 1940s. Unable to obtain specified parts, he said: If we cant get the part, we must get the function

VM Origins of the Process

The Results: Most shortages were overcome Many functions were performed more reliably Cost were often less than the original design

He then asked:
What must the part do? What functions must it perform? What else will do the job? How else can the functions be performed?

The VM Job Plan

PRE STUDY

Five (5) Steps in VM Studies

INFORMATION SPECULATION JUDGEMENT DEVELOPMENT RECOMMENDATION & REPORTING POST STUDY

VM involves a very systematic process, encapsulated within the job plan. It has a defined beginning and end and is typically is a phased process that cover the five stages of the VM study: Information Creative Evaluation Development Recommendation & Reporting

The five (5) steps of the Job Plan are shown diagrammatically above.
The significant of the arrows is that, while a cascade system is used, each phase flows on from and using the output of the preceding phase, there is frequently reversion to the previous phase, as a result of some discovery or unexpected development.
