You Can Make An Online CV Using Free Software To Get The Job You Want
Right now with the world in an economic mess there is a lot of competition for jobs. And it doesn’t look like it is going to get better any time soon. Also just remember there are new graduates entering the job market every year, making the situation even worse. Plus, because of the economic climate businesses are closing down in record numbers. Putting business owners back in the job market. At the moment in the USA the unemployment rate is running at 9.2%, in the European Union it’s 9.3%. Canada is a little better with 7.4% and Australia is a lot better at only 4.0%. So how do you compete with all the other people looking for a job?

Getting A Job Nowadays Is Not Easy
You have to do something to stand out above the crowd. And that is where an online CV comes in. Now with a lot of jobs being advertised online you send your CV in attached to an email. Some companies are very skeptical about opening an attachment. If they think there is anything wrong with your email – delete. And if there are any viruses going around on email attachments they could tell you to send in your CV in the email. And a CV copy pasted into an email doesn’t look all that great. So it now seems an online CV could be a part of the future. It is time to get in early and get the edge over all the other job seekers. It is only a matter

of time before some companies request an online CV instead of opening an attachment. And one more thing an online CV can look more professional and have a lot more in it than a traditional CV bound into a folder. But the joy of an online CV is you can change it to suit the job you are applying for. I don’t mean change the facts, just change the way it looks and what you put in it and in what order. It is not fixed in stone. I now think even the way you write your CV has changed from the traditional CV to the modern CV.

“What I Can Do For You”
And now with a lot of competition in the job market you need to be different. I think now just to get looked at you need to start with “What you can do for them” not a list of what you have done in the past. But it must be related to the job advertised. If it is not – delete. Most CVs start off with a list of what you have done in the past. I would start of with “What I can do for you” and then a list of what you have done. Also you must keep it short and to the point at the very beginning so you end up on the short list. The first thing you wont to happen is: to get on the short list, then an interview. If you don’t get on the short list you will not get an interview. I actually prefer reading something like a personal statement first, but that is me. I think this way the reader is drawn into the CV as opposed to just looking at a list. It is very easy to scan a list but it is more difficult to scan a half page of writing. I would make the first quarter to half page a type of personal statement telling the reader “What you can do for them.”

What Comes Next
This first part under the headline is like an extract or an executive summary and just basically says “What I can do for you.” Use easy to read language that is simple to understand. Don’t use big words because it makes it more difficult to read. If it is too difficult to read or hard to understand – delete. Just write as though you are talking to a friend because hopefully if you get the job that person will be your friend. The online CV should be on one page with links to material that will help you get a job. But the whole CV must be on one page so the reader can scroll down from top to bottom. If the Human Resource Manager has to keep clicking through to different links – delete. The CV is one page then you can have links to your book or report or presentation or whatever. To keep the reader’s attention they must be able to scroll down not click on links. If they click on anything it is for additional information. You are trying to get on the short list. So everything must be set up so it is very easy for the reader to get all the information they need to put you on the short list. When they come back for the second look that is when they have more time to check the links.

You Need To Stand Out Above The Crowd
And when you look at CVs all the time something that is different catches your eye. The first contact with your prospective employer is the headline, so it has to stand out from all the others. The most important thing the person reading your CV wants to know is: “What can you do for us?” That will also answer the question “Can you do the job?” So you must answer the question. Never leave it up to the Human Resource Manager or whoever to try and decide what you can do for them.

You must say “I can do this and that and a few other things for you.” You must never mention anything that the company can do for you. Like you must never say anything like “I want to join your company because you have a very good management training program.” Or any other program or anything along those lines. You could add under reasons why you want a job at the company. “I can invest directly in your company in your share reinvestment program.” This means you have done some research about the company and big companies like their employees to invest in the company. And companies like you to know something about them.

To Get Attention You Need A Very Good Headline
You need a headline that will grab the person reading the CVs so they will keep reading yours. Information on the internet always starts with a headline so your CV must start with a headline. The headline should be in ‘title case’ not ‘upper case’ that is the first letter of each word is in capitals. The headline for your cover letter and email could be the same as the headline on your online CV. Headlines are there to catch attention and if they don’t catch attention the headline is not working, so change it. Also the headline must be believable. If the person reading your headline thinks what you are saying is not true, that is as far as they go – delete. Also you must realize the person or persons reading your cover letter usually work in the industry. Except when you go through an agent but as soon as you get to somebody in the company and they don’t believe what you say – delete. This could happen in jobs related to sales, management and possible marketing. So don’t exaggerate or use your best case example in your headline. Use believable headlines. Try and answer the question “What can I do for your company.” That is what they want to know. And try putting a benefit in the headline.

Something you are exceptional good at or something you can prove you have done. Try and use the word ‘you’ instead of ‘I’ if possible. You are selling yourself not telling them about you. There is a big difference. Most headlines should be under 18 words except when the headline explains your situation like the first headline below. They should be in red color and in quotation marks as that makes them stand out. And that is what you want – to stand out above the crowd. “Do You Want An Electrical Engineer Who Has Been Working In A Power Station For 19 Years Working For You?” You can change the words to suit your situation. This headline changes your age into experience. You are selling your experience. “Do You Want A Star Salesman To Increase Your Sales By 86%?” You have to be careful here, as you have to prove what you say. I would recommend you write as many headlines as you can about the industry you work in because they are that important. The headline is the first part that is read so if it no good that could be as far as they go. And if the are a 100 applicants then the headline must be good. If you are not getting any replies from the jobs you have applied for, it is probably the headline. So try another one and see if that makes a difference.

The First Sentence Must Lead On From The Headline
Here instead of writing “I have done this and I have done that.” You should rephrase it into something like, “Your company would be better with a person experienced in…” “Wouldn’t it be better for your company if you had a person experienced in ….working for you.” “It would be to your advantage to have a person experienced in etc etc

Try and keep away from using “I”, try and change it to ‘you’ or ‘your company’ But you will have to use ‘I’ when you are describing what you have done in the past. You could start off like: “If your company wants an engineer who can run a hydro power station then I am your man as I have …..” Now you move onto what you can do or have done in the past.

Use Bullets Points And Lists
To get bullets just click on ‘Format’ at the top of this page on your computer and then click on ‘Bullets and Numbering’ and there are your bullet points. Left click on your mouse and make the area you want to put into bullets black then go to ‘Bullets and Numbering’ and click on the set up you want and there you have your bullets, just like below. • Always start with your most recent experience and work back in time. • The problem with a lot of CVs is they are just too long. • The idea of the CV is to get an interview for the job. You are not trying to get a job you are trying to get an interview. So everything must be to the point. • Don’t list anything that is out of date or common stuff anyone can do if you are experienced. • If you are just starting out list everything and always add your typing speed. With everything done on keyboards typing speed is a plus. • Now list where you have worked and hopefully you have references to prove it. • Just list them, keep it simple and to the point. • You are selling yourself to get an interview – that’s it. • If your information is not to the point – delete. • The delete button is always a fingertip away – just remember that.

In Writing CVs There Used To Be The “Objective”
I say forget the objective. I don’t know who invented that but if you want an objective it must be “What I can do for you.” The objective was always back the front stating what you were looking for. Nobody is interested in you, they are only interested in what you can do for us. So write that. “I’m looking for a primary school where I can improve the grades of the children as I have 13 years experience teaching primary school.” or “…I have 6 years Montessori teaching experience” or “I am specialized in teaching reading using phonics” Think what do they want and then tell them what you can do for them. Get the picture. If you say what you want the company to do for you – delete. Never say anything that is a disadvantage because – delete. This could be things like reoccurring illnesses like asthma and other minor illnesses that pop up every now and then. Or you like to go to church on Sundays. Or you have other commitments. There is no place for anything like these. You are trying to get an interview and all those will do is get you the delete button.

When Companies Downsize So Should You
Also you might have to downsize your qualifications and experience if possible. If you are applying for a job below your qualification and experience level, redesign your online CV to match. Drop the Masters degree and downplay your experience to suit the job you are applying for. Don’t overplay your experience like you would if you are applying to upgrade yourself. Now you are going to downgrade. In some cases I’ve actually taken the time to reply “You are too overqualified we are looking for a shop assistant not a manager.” And I am sure I am not the only person who does that.

It is amazing some people actually think education is going to get them a job. But if the job doesn’t require education you are not going to get the job. I will add here because of the economic and job environment at the moment companies can and will hire education. They know you are not going to leave as soon as you can get a better job because there is nowhere to go.

Location Is A Good Selling Point
Another item I look at is location. If you live very close to the job location say so because I would hire somebody that lives next door because I would hope they could get to work on time. Also the cost of traveling to and from work is going up and there is a point where it is uneconomical in money and time to travel too far to go to work. Nowadays I am sure some people actually change their address to live closer to a job. If you live very close to the job that is a good selling point so put it near the top of your CV. Always put your advantages or benefits at the beginning of your CV and anything that is not really an advantage put near the bottom. If you are in your 50’s your date of birth and age is at the bottom. If your age is at the top and it is one of the first things they see and you are too old – delete. Don’t put anything at the top that can cause the delete button to be activated. It the Human Resource Manager has over a 100 applicants to go through the delete button is working overtime, guaranteed. Have all your documents scanned and put online. Most free sites will let you upload photos. Most documents will scan in .jpg they are easier to upload.

To Go From Shortlist To Interview
Here you need the add-ons like a book or a presentation. If you have made any speeches or presentations put them up online and add links. Now presentations are big online. After you attend a conference you can usually get a copy of the conference on DVD or something like that. Sometimes you have to pay for them. And if you look at the videos of the presentations they

are just from a video camera stuck in the corner so you don’t have to have good quality video. I prefer if you are going to do a short 20-minute speech or presentations just have your wife or husband walk around with your camera on video. Just film you and the crowd’s reaction and a few of your slides. That is usually better that setting a camera up in the corner. At least when you moving around with the camera there is a bit more to see. Also you could arrange a video presentation in your home with your friends and neighbors if you like. If you watch a lot of presentations you can see they are filmed in someone’s living room. Mind you, you have to pay a pretty penny for the information on the video when you buy the video. You can do the same to give the impression that you do seminars. This all helps to go from short list to interview. Always link to secondary information. The first part of your online CV is to draw the person watching the video into what you can do for them. And then onto all the other stuff. You do not want to cause information overload so always link to your other information. Give the person doing the hiring time to digest what you can do for them. When you put anything up online make sure there is a way to contact you. When you put videos up on youtube or on your facebook page people can always contact you. Make sure you are contactable.

Be Very Careful What Is On Your Facebook Page
You can be sure if you end up on the shortlist your Facebook page will be checked, so have one even if it is just a profile page. If you are a regular Facebook user don’t update your social life until you get a job. Don’t put something like “We got ultra trashed in some mega-trendy down-market sleaze-pit last night” because that is definitely not going to get you a job. Unless you are applying for a job in a mega-trendy down-market sleaze-pit of course.

Put on your facebook page that you are looking for a job and say something about what type of job you are after and a link to your online CV. And hope your friends don’t rip your CV apart. Anyway it might be an idea if they do, because then you can fix all your mistakes. If you have an online presence you can update all your other sites.

Make A Video Presentation Of Your Documents
You can also make a video presentation of your documents and references. http://www.effectmatrix.com/PowerPoint-Video-Converter/FreePowerPoint-Video-Converter.htm Leave the setting on 10 seconds per slide as they can stop the video to read more. You can either use a power point presentation video or a slideshow. I would prefer the power point video. Make sure you can read the video. I prefer to use this video joiner as it is very good and you can adjust the size of the video http://www.allfreevideoconverter.com/freevideojoiner/index.html If you can’t read the documents on the video just scan and upload. For documents and references use the largest size picture that you can as that will make them easier to read. If you can’t read them on your computer screen then the person looking at your CV also can’t read them – delete. So make sure they are readable. Now you have written down everything that should be on a CV. But with the internet you can have links to a lot more. And all these links add credibility to your situation.

Add A Video Presentation
I do recommend adding video. Actually I would put the video at the very top and use the headline as a caption for the video. Your video cannot be too long. You are lucky youtube only allows 10 or 15 minutes. I would definitely keep it under 10 minutes. I think the best is say whatever you have to say with nothing you don’t have to say. Keep it short and simple. When you have over a hundred CVs in front of you time is important and a lot of

people do not have the time to watch a long video presentation. Actually I always look to see how long the video is before I will watch it. When you do video you are doing a presentation so you must be standing. When you are standing it looks better and you can project your voice. And always talk to the camera and look at the camera not at the computer screen. Be dressed like you would for an interview and be very professional. If you are going to write anything make sure you are standing in front of a whiteboard or blackboard. Some people say you should have something like a wall or door behind you but I don’t think so. If you want to show something like your book then have it handy. If you are going to do a mind map, practice mind mapping. I recommend doing something on a blackboard or whiteboard. Just a sample demonstration about how you would go about solving a problem or do something related to the job advertised. You can do a flow chart or something similar but make sure you have some practice so it looks like you know what you are doing when you make the video

How To Make A Video Presentation
Making a video is very easy you just need to do a few practice runs. It won’t take long to get it right. You can use either a webcam or your video camera. When using a webcam I use Debut Video Capture http://www.nchsoftware.com/capture/index.html . This program will capture anything on your webcam and it is free for 14 days then it resorts back to the original free version. I got an older version from http://www.filehippo.com a free software site that has legal software. The older version is the original free version. You can also video your computer screen if you are doing a demonstration. I always record in .avi it is easier to work with. There are a few things you can do to make a really good video presentation like adding a title page. I use these power point templates http://powerbacks.com they are really good and the copyright allows you to

use them for personal use. You can open the .ppt file in open office http://www.openoffice.org and add a title. But you must save them in Microsoft office .ppt format so you can make a video off the title page with http://www.effectmatrix.com/PowerPoint-Video-Converter/FreePowerPoint-Video-Converter.htm A reason easy program to use. Now to join the title to your video you need http://www.allfreevideoconverter.com/freevideojoiner/index.html. And that should give a fairly decent video presentation that you can upload to http://www.youtube.com. And from there you can add it to your online CV. Now making the video is the easy part but what you say is very important so think about it and have a few practice runs. The video and what you say and write about yourself are very important. You must keep thinking job interview, job interview because that is what you are after.

Add A Book To Your List Of Accomplishments
Now to help you get the interview you can add many things. That is the joy of the internet. And one thing I strongly recommend is a book. If you are not into writing books you can write a paper or thesis on a work related topic. Go back to your university days when you had to write a thesis and do something like that. Nowadays it is very easy with the internet. Just pick a topic that compares two different ways of doing something and do a review of the literature like you used to a university. Then write a summary and your conclusion. And if you prepare the book as a pdf file it will look very professional. Anything like this makes an excellent white paper, that you can publish on many sites on the internet. Now if your paper is long enough you can publish it on one of the many print on demand websites. And that is the goal, to become a published author.

There are a few rules and the number one rule is it should be related to the work you do or the job you are going to apply for. So the person looking at your CV will put you on the short list and invite you in for an interview. In your industry look at any issue that you are familiar with because it is very easy to write about something you know about. You have to confirm the research so always copy paste the name of the page on the internet where the information is, and the books you use so you can put them in a bibliography at the end of your book. When you are reviewing the literature come to a conclusion that supports one side of the debate. That is what most people what to know.

Topics You Could Write About
Also another topic you can look at is the historical connections to some of the modern day equipment you use today. If you are interested in history this would be a good topic. You could model it something along the lines of the National Geographic program “Engineering Connections.” This program went back into history looked at how modern equipment had evolved into what we have today. But what a lot of industries are looking for now is how their industry will survive into the future. This is where you could write a very interesting book about the effects of climate change, global warming, oil depletion and population and whatever else affects your industry. You could add globalization and how to outsource over the internet into the mix. A book like this could be very sort after in today’s economic climate. Just remember writing books about what you know is very easy even if you have never done it before. When writing a book you must write everyday if you can. Don’t put it off. You can start first with a white paper or a report as these don’t take very long to write and are a lot less pages than a book. And you can also put them up on the internet on sites like http://www.scribd.com Nowadays specialized reports are becoming very popular. Most reports are in the 20-page range.

Copyright © Peter Legrove 2011 All Rights Reserved

How To Make A Video Presentation Using Free Software

Also you can write a case study and put it up on the internet. Now the case study must be related to the industry and it must show what you can do. For example: “How To Introduce A New Product Onto The China Market” and you would proceed to tell anybody who reads your report how it can be done and how you would do it. “How To Increase Sales In This Economic Climate” “How To Get More Customers By Using Store Demonstrations, By Using Direct Marketing, By Giving Away Free Samples, By Using The Internet” etc etc The case study could be about how you would make more money for the company. Companies always like new ideas about making more money. The old way of putting your CV together doesn’t hold up under this economic climate. To get anywhere you have to be different. As the saying goes ‘first impressions mean everything’ and that is very true when you are competing against the dreaded delete button. If there is anything in your CV that should not be there, you get deleted and that is it. Your CV must be tailored to get the job. It must say what you can do for the company or how you will much more money for the company by either reducing costs or getting more customers. Or something else you can do.

What If You Have To Fax Your CV
Nowadays in this economic climate some companies are now asking for CVs to be sent in by fax. That is to thin down the number of applicants as it is very easy to email and faxing takes more time. If you want the job print out your online CV and fax it in, don’t send a fax with a link to your online CV because it is just going to end up in the trash. I would still leave it in online format with the headline the first part read, followed by your summary personal statement. The headline is the hook to get them to read on so keep it there. For faxed replies to a job keep them short like 1 or 2 pages. The last thing anybody wants is 10 pages coming out of the fax.
Copyright © Peter Legrove 2011 All Rights Reserved

How To Make A Video Presentation Using Free Software

Make your headline smaller like two lines in bold, font size bigger. The headline must attract attention or it will end up in the trash. At the bottom have a link to your online CV. But remember there must be enough in the faxed page to get them motivated enough to type in the link to your online CV. If they ask for a cover letter write one. The cover letter should be one page. I would use my personal statement on the cover letter after the formalities. In true copywriting fashion you could have a headline on the cover letter, instead of a formal letter. Just remember to get the job you have to be different and stand out in the crowd of CVs that the fax spits out. Don’t forget fax language, Page 1 0f 2 and Page 2of 2. Or it might get separated and then trash.

Sometimes You Have To Do Something When You Apply
Also if the job application asks for anything like a case study or how you would do something, answer it and tell them because that is all they look at first. So if you haven’t done that – trash. In situations like this your CV comes second. If you don’t pass the first test – trash. This method of getting a job is becoming more and more popular as Human Resource Managers are just getting swamped with CVs. So if you want the job you have to send in what is asked for or – trash. If you just send in your CV – trash. Also about ringing, nowadays it is not on unless asked and now nobody asks. So don’t ring. Mainly because the company is just overrun with CVs and nobody knows what is going on and they don’t know who you are or where your CV is. So don’t ring because it has no advantage now. Also about ringing in a few days after you have sent in your CV, don’t. Because if you are not on the short list nobody want to talk to you. And again nobody knows who you are. The forward approach just doesn’t work in this economic climate when the company is swamped with CVs.
Copyright © Peter Legrove 2011 All Rights Reserved

How To Make A Video Presentation Using Free Software

This might happen: you email in your online CV and a few days later you get a request for more information that you have already sent in. And it looks like it has been sent to everybody either CC or BCC. In cases like that they are not really interested in who they get so forget it if you are not serious. They had so many applicants they are trying to thin down the numbers. But if you get an email asking you for your opinion on something or how you would do something or a case study and you want the job then do what they ask and email it in. Here they are also thinning out the applicants. So if you want to be in the running, just do it.

Be Careful Online And Answering Questions
A lot of people just don’t realize that there is no privacy on the internet. Basically everything you put up on the internet is available to everybody. So I am very careful about what I put up online about me. And you should be careful too. So don’t put ID numbers anywhere on the internet. If the company asks for a scan of your passport or social security number cross out some of the numbers so your whole number is not visible. You can do that using http://www.gimp.org a free open source program similar to photoshop. If they query it just say I’ll show you the document at the interview. I’ve been putting jobs up on the internet and looking at jobs now for quite some time and some jobs just don’t ring true. There was one job the other day where the salary was way above what everybody else was paying. Anything like that, that just doesn’t add up I would steer well away from. In today’s economic climate you are more likely going to get a salary below the market not way above it. So I would keep away from anything that doesn’t seem right. In some instances there will be a job with a little higher than the usual salary or the salary range is within the standard and you apply it. Then they tell you that job is gone but they have this job and they offer you a job with a
Copyright © Peter Legrove 2011 All Rights Reserved

How To Make A Video Presentation Using Free Software

lower salary. I don’t like to say this but that pops up quite often. In situations like this I would turn down the job and try somewhere else. Usually there is a job with the high salary but that has gone. I am guilty of this and I’m sure many others are. I advertise a job just to see what is out there and what type of person is looking for work. There are a few jobs like that and with the free jobsites it doesn’t cost anything to put an advertisement online. So don’t be too disheartened if you don’t hear anything back after you have applied for a job.

What If You Don’t Get The Job
Some job you think is ideal for you because you have everything they want. But you hear nothing back. That could be because you are the wrong sex. They want a man and you are a woman, but they cannot say in the ad they want a woman because that is against the law. That could be one of the reasons you never hear back. I wouldn’t push the issue as these things happen. Now when jobs are tight there are going to be an endless number of people answering any job advertisement so competition is also very tight. It is disheartening when you just can’t give everybody a job because there are some very talented people out there. And I always wonder if I picked the best person for the position. I usually say we are trying out one of the applicants and if it doesn’t work out we’ll contact them again. Just in case. If you are asked for information that you consider they should not be asking for in the job you are going for, like how much you have in the bank, or other financial questions, be very careful. Evade the answer and get out then get another job. I personally like to know as little as possible about who applies for the jobs. All I really want to know is if you can get to the place of work. To me that is very important because I can usually tell how long you will stay at the job. And all the legal stuff like police checks and drug tests. And also if you can do the job. That is all I really want to know, where you live and how you will get to the job and if you can do the job.

Right now with the job market so overloaded with applicants information overload is a problem, so I don’t want to know what I don’t need to know. And I think there are a lot of people like me out there so if anybody asks for too much I’d back off and try somewhere else.

Summary Time
• Remember the most important part of your CV is “What can I do for you” • With an online CV you can change it to suit the job you are applying for. • Keep it short and to the point. • I would copy paste your CV webpage from the page on the internet so you get it correct. • Good Luck
