Introduction
The A4000 belongs to the Polistream product range and is a robust 1U rack mounting, high performance ASI input and output platform specifically designed for use within a Polistream subtitling system. The ASI input capability of the A4000 is typically used for the extraction of Program Clock Reference (PCR) values from an incoming ASI stream. These PCR values would then be used to generate the Presentation Time Stamp (PTS) values for the outgoing subtitles. In addition to PCR extraction, the A4000 can filter incoming ASI packets by PID for system monitoring purposes. The ASI output capability of the A4000 is typically used to generate an outgoing ASI stream (MPEG-2 DVB) carrying DVB subtitle data (bitmap data and PTS). The A4000 is based on proven and standard PC architecture and operating systems. This ensures the highest performance is achieved with the greatest degree of flexibility in configuration and use. The A4000 is connected to the Polistream system using a standard 10/100baseT Ethernet network. It is recommended that Ethernet switches (not simple Ethernet hubs) are used where required. The A4000 has a rear panel mounted connector for an optional external floppy drive (for configuration purposes). There are no user configurable switches, links or front panel controls (with the exception of a soft power push-button switch), and all A4000 configuration and operation is done (either locally or remotely) via Ethernet from controlling client applications. The front panel of the A4000 is fitted with unit status LED indicators, and Ethernet port status LED indicators are fitted to the rear panel RJ45 connector. This manual covers the installation requirements of the A4000, as well as providing information on unit and system configuration and connection.
Operation
Once an A4000 ASI input and output platform has been correctly installed with respect to the contents of this installation manual, the operation of the unit is controlled entirely by the various Polistream applications.
Installation
Siting requirements Physical
Mounting: Standard 480mm (19in) rack bay. The A4000 is secured by four fixing screws through the front panel. It is recommended that the rear of the unit is supported to prevent damage to the front panel fixing lugs. 44mm 1U. No ventilation space is required above or below. The overall depth of the unit is 425mm. Adequate space should be allowed behind the unit for connections to be made without imposing strain on the cables or connectors. Forced air ventilation across the unit from right to left (viewed from front of unit). The ventilation slots on either side and the rear of the chassis, must not be obstructed in any way.
Air Flow:
Electrical
The A4000 is fitted with an IEC mains connector. Please note: There is no mains power switch fitted to the A4000 with the exception of the front panel mounted soft power push-button switch. The internal power supply is an auto ranging unit, which can accept AC mains input voltages between 100 and 240V (50/60Hz), with no user configuration or adjustment required. The power consumption is 84W (typically). Warning: Do not remove the top cover while the unit is connected to the mains supply. There is a risk of lethal electric shock from internal components.
Environmental
There are no special environmental requirements, but the normal precautions regarding the operation of electrical equipment should be observed. In particular, ensure that the ambient operating temperature is maintained within the limits of 0C to 30C at a relative humidity not exceeding 90% non-condensing.
Unit configuration
All A4000 configuration is done (locally or remotely) via Ethernet using various Polistream applications. There are no user configurable internal switches or links fitted.

Ethernet (RJ45) provides the 10/100 BaseT connection to the Polistream system via an Ethernet switching hub. This Ethernet connection must be made across a dedicated network and should be isolated from heavy traffic networks such as corporate IT systems. Ethernet Link (green) and Activity (orange) LEDs are fitted to this connector. 4. Printer port provides a standard PC parallel printer port for normal / EPP / ECP printers. 5. Midi I/O not currently used on the A4000. 6. Keyboard for connection to a standard PS/2 style keyboard. 7. USB not currently used on the A4000. 8. Com 1 provides a standard PC RS232 serial port. 9. VGA provides a standard PC SVGA monitor output. 10. Sound I/O not currently used on the A4000. 11. Com 2 provides a second RS232 serial port. 12. Power Fail provides contact closure relay signalling in the event of a unit power failure. 13. Floppy Drive provides connection for an external 3.5in floppy disc drive. 14. ASI EXT CLK input not currently used on the A4000 15. ASI output provides an ASI output connection on a 75 ohm BNC connector. TX LED (green) indicates that data is being transmitted (flashes when transmitting). SYNC LED (green) indicates that the receiver is able to synchronize on the ASI transport stream packets (illuminates when sync has been acquired and goes out when sync is lost). 16. ASI input provides an ASI input connection on a 75 ohm BNC connector. RX LED (red) indicates that data is being received (flashes when receiving). CD LED (red) indicates a signal is present (constant illumination when there is a connection). Once installed, an A4000 will generally require only Power, Ethernet and ASI connections. Please note: In order to maintain compliance with standards EN55022 Class A (emissions) and EN50082 1 (immunity), the A4000 must be connected using properly earthed and fully screened cables. Figure 3: Typical A4000 configuration within a DVB Polistream system The illustration shows a typical DVB (ASI in and out) Polistream subtitling system with a P5000 central server, a P4000 running various configurable software modules, and an A4000 ASI input and output platform. The A4000 platform would run the Program Manager application and Configurable Software Modules such as High Bandwidth ASI RX and ASI TX. The illustration also shows the Configuration Client workstation running a Polistream monitoring application such as MSX. However, Polistream system monitoring can be done either locally, or remotely via a WAN or P5000 ISDN connection.
Troubleshooting
The A4000 ASI is extremely reliable and stable, and will rarely need attention during its normal service life. However, in the event of an operational problem, it is advisable to check all associated equipment and cabling. It is also worth restarting the unit by closing all open applications and cycling the power to the A4000 using the soft power push-button switch. The following guide may help identify possible causes to operational problems. However, if these measures fail to locate the problem please contact your local dealer or Screen Subtitling Systems support team. Observed problem Power On LED not lit. Possible remedial action Check local power supply voltage and IEC connector at the rear of the A4000 chassis. HDD activity should occur during unit start up, cycle power and observe LED for activity. Check green Link LED to ensure unit is connected to the Ethernet network correctly. Check network connections to and from the Ethernet switch. Check ASI input connections and cabling.
