Smore to discover! Celebrate winter
delights at Winterfest 2013
The American Club resort hosts festive celebration from ice golf on Wood Lake
to horse-drawn wagon rides throughout the quaint Village of Kohler, Wisconsin
Snow people of all ages cele-
brate the thrill of the chill during
Winterfest, in Kohler, Wisconsin.
The Shops at Woodlake Kohler
hosts two wintery days of frosty
fun and frolic January 25-27 fea-
turing winter-themed activities,
tastings and demonstrations. The
shopping center is nestled along
Wood Lake and offers a serene
winter setting for new and tradi-
tional experiences during this out-
rageous seasonal celebration.
The 2013 Schedule of Events
features a sleigh full of new activ-
ities. Kohler is well known for
world-class golf courses and this
winter the professionals of the
Kohler Golf Academy dust off
their putters to host Ice Golf, a
shortened golf course with tees,
fairways and greens. Pending ice
conditions, the course will be
played on Wood Lake with waffle
balls and all the money raised will
benefit the Above & Beyond Chil-
dren Museum of Sheboygan.
Were thrilled with the line-up
for this years winter celebration,
said Tricia Rathermel, special
events coordinator for The Ameri-
can Club Resort. From the horse-
drawn wagon rides a favorite of
many to the new Smores by the
bonfire, the weekends activities
are geared toward families and
kids of all ages. We are especially
looking forward to the Ice Golf ex-
perience on Wood Lake who
says you cant golf in the winter!
New activities for children in-
clude a colossal Snow Mountain
for climbing and conquering Pho-
tos with Winter Friends, friendly
Winter Characters will engage
children in the activities and Make
& Take Crafts. Children are in-
vited to enjoy a special Winterfest
Kids Menu at Cucina Italian
Restaurant and children of all ages
can enjoy sweet treats at Craverie
Chocolatier Caf.
Traditional Winterfest activities
include Ice Skating with rental
skates available Snowshoeing
demonstrations and rentals
Horse-drawn Wagon Rides, Dog
Sledding presentations, Giant
Snow Sculptures and Curling.
Visitors shouldnt miss the chance
to make sweet treats with a S-
more Kit at the lakeside bonfire.
Event-goers are invited to warm
up from the chill in the air and dis-
cover Winterfest Shopping Spe-
cials and enjoy 30%-70%
discounts during the Winter

lake Kohler, a collection of more
than 20 specialty shops and bou-
tiques featuring mens and
womens apparel, toys, col-
lectibles, restaurants, home fur-
nishing and design stores.

If you live in
Kohler, you
have probably
seen a group of
runners who
are somehow
able to chat with
each other while
maintaining a
brisk pace around the Village. The
group says it runs in various loca-
tions throughout the county for fun,
fitness, and companionship. We
can run for two hours in the morn-
ing talking the whole time, then
meet for lunch and talk some
more,said Deb Wente. Conversa-
tions often revolve around each
others successes or life challenges.
On a misty, foggy morning on Jan-
uary 11, the group met at 8:00 a.m.
to run a virtual half marathon for
people theyve never met victims
and families of the Sandy Hook El-
ementary School shooting.
Virtual half
marathons or 5K
events allow any-
one, anywhere to
participate by reg-
istering online.
Bibs are sent out,
and the 13.1
miles or 5K can also be completed
by swimming, biking, or even on a
treadmill. The distances can be
completed all at once, or whenever
participants can work it in, as long
as they are completed by January
31. The event is based on the honor
system, so miles do not need to be
reported.
Registration fees for the Sandy
Hook virtual half marathon go to-
ward the Sandy Hook School Sup-
port Fund created by the United
Way of Western Connecticut, in
partnership with Newtown Savings
Bank.
Donations can also be made on-
line at newtown.uwwesternct.org.
See page 8 for schedule of
events.

MADISON If you receive a
phone call claiming that you need
a replacement Medicare card, hang
up! It is a scam.
The Wisconsin Department of
Agriculture, Trade and Consumer
Protection (DATCP) recently re-
ceived a complaint on behalf of a
senior who received a phone call
from a group calling itself Pre-
ferred Benefits to Seniors. By the
end of the call, this consumer had
turned over her bank account num-
ber to the caller, but was able to
close her bank account before any
money was stolen.
A number of consumers have
complained on different scam-
tracking websites about receiving
similar calls from this group. In
their complaints, consumers note
that the caller often tells seniors
that they need re-
p l a c e m e n t
Medicare cards.
In order to process
the new card, the
caller asks to
verify the se-
niors personal in-
formation and asks for the seniors
bank account number.
The caller typically provides a
toll-free number for any future in-
quiries, but the number is simply
linked to an answering service and
no additional information on the
group is made available.
Remember that representatives
with the Medicare program will
never call you to verify personal
information. If you receive a call
about a replacement Medicare
card, hang up immediately. If you
or a family member
receives a similar
call and turns bank-
ing information
over to the caller,
you should immedi-
ately contact your
bank and inform them
of the situation. The
bank may choose to close the ac-
count and issue you a new account
number.

sumer topics, visit datcp.wiscon-

First winter free
fishing weekend set
for January 19, 20
MADISON Pull up a pail and
help family and friends discover
that ice is nice when it comes to
fishing in Wisconsin -- doubly so
when the fishing is free.
Wisconsins first winter Free
Fishing Weekend is set for Jan. 19
and 20. Residents and nonresidents
alike can fish anywhere in Wiscon-
sin for free. No licenses or trout
stamps are needed. This includes
all inland waters and Wisconsins
side of the Great Lakes and Mis-
sissippi River.
We invite everybody to get out
and start a new tradition, says De-
partment of Natural Resources
Secretary Cathy Stepp. Ice fish-
ing is all about family, friends and
fun. Its a great time to get out, get
some fresh air and try fishing from
a new perspective.
Wisconsin has long had a Free
Fishing Weekend during the open
water season; its the first Saturday
and Sunday in June. The winter
Free Fishing Weekend was estab-
lished under Act 168, a law passed
last year aimed at boosting partic-
ipation in fishing, hunting and
other traditional outdoor recre-
ation.
Wisconsins winter Free Fishing
Weekend arrives at a time of grow-
ing interest in ice fishing: 110,000
more Wisconsin adults 16 and over
reported ice fishing in 2010 than
the previous decade. Thats an es-
timated 590,700 Wisconsinites 16
and over enjoying the hard-water
season, according to the most re-
cent National Survey on Recre-
ation and the Environment.
And now that temperatures are
finally more seasonal and allowing
lakes and rivers to freeze over,
there are plenty of places to go
fishing in a state with more than
15,000 lakes, 42,000 miles of
flowing rivers, and bordered by
two Great Lakes and the Missis-
sippi River.
During Free Fishing Weekend,
rules governing the number and
size of fish anglers can keep are
still in place, as are fishing season
dates. Go to DNRs online fishing
regulations to look up the rules for
inland lakes.
People fishing lakes within state
parks will need to purchase a state
parks vehicle pass.

KHS Drama adds winter
production Turning
Points features a
collection of one-act plays
Fans of Kohler High School
thespians will have another pro-
duction to add to their calendar of
events. In early February, students
will produce a collection of one-act
plays with the theme of Turning
Points.
Our cast is made up entirely of
girls, said director Peggy Hoff-
mann, so we used this unusual op-
portunity to tell the stories of girls
and women who were facing a
turning point in their lives.
Elyse Gutschow will begin the
show with Mark Twains Diary of
Eve, a comic monologue about the
frustrations of the first woman with
her first man. The Salem witch tri-
als are the subject of To Burn A
Witch, a play that tells the story of
a teenage girl in Colonial America
faced with a test of her faith. The
James L. Bray one-act features
Jennifer Rutten, Hannah Copper-
smith, Courtney Rutten and Lily
Hart. Kelsey Wright and Madeline
Heun will perform The Draft
Board by Geff Moyer. This light-
hearted story revolves around two
farm girls who venture to the big
city of Memphis in hopes of seeing
Elvis Presley before he leaves for
the army in 1958.
Weve had such a great re-
sponse to our drama programs,
both by students who want to per-
form and by parents and commu-
nity members who want to see
great productions, Hoffmann con-
tinued. The Winter One-Acts will
give even more actors a chance to
perform in lead roles.
The short play The Keeping
Place by Tim Kelly is a gothic
ghost story about lost love. Actors
Chloi DuCharme, Amelia Grose,
and Isabelle Heins portray three
young women, trapped in a seaside
cottage in the midst of a storm. The
last play of the collection is a com-
edy about three society grande
dames who demand to see their
obituaries at the local newspaper
before theyre actually dead. Tim
Kellys The Mouse and The Raven
is directed by senior Sarah Leick
and features Lily Hart, Courtney
Rutten, Kitty ONeill, Mara Todd
and Sarah Leick.
Turning Points will be per-
formed at Kohler Memorial The-
atre on Saturday, February 9th at 7
pm and Sunday, February 10th at 2
pm. Admission is free of charge.
