That’s .” he had told me. not right. when he brought me the basket himself. “Inoculations. “Inoculations. The se needles are filled with inoculations.” I say. . a soft smile curving my lips. each filled with a yellow liquid that reminds me of gold paint. “these are inoculations for the rabbits. There’s no thing about inoculations here. I pat the basket of needles as if
.” My eyes burn with pain as I scan the text on the floppy. Eldest told me these were inoculations. I consult the floppy that contains my instructions for today’s labor. Three Months before I Die I stare at the basket of hypodermic needles.” I say. Across the top of the screen is a chart and the words GENETIC MODIFICATION. Eldest told me so. Sharp pain shoots through my head.
That’s nice. I open my eyes and see blue.comforting it in the knowledge of what it truly is. Sometim es. My sky is a certainty. For a moment. Dark. I think about how I’m living aboard a spaceship hurtling through the stars tow ard a new planet. I like sounds. That is what I like about it. Blink. It doesn’t matter what the cha rt and words on the floppy say. The gentle clacky-chewy sounds as they nibble on grass. I look up at the sky. I stand. Made of metal an d painted with clouds that never move. Blink. I open my eyes. I do not like the dark. Everything is only what Eldest says it is. but not silent. But those thoughts are too big. It only matters what Eldest says. The little chirrupi ng noises they make. Bloodbruisespainbetrayalalonealon ealonealonealone. The rabbit field is quiet. Dark. Soft thumps on the ground as the rabbits hop around. Dark. Light. Blue .

I see someone running through the fields. This is my day. They scamper away. a swing of color. the screen says—I plunge a hypoder mic needle into its back leg. But they do not like it when I try to grab them. P erhaps they know that sometimes when I snatch them up. where they can’t see. inoculated. they’re not too concerned about it. Sometimes I look at the sky. at th e green hills.

I tackle the nearest rabbit. They think I am their friend. Eldest told me she is a freak. bright hair. but only a meter or so. Pale skin.” I say aloud. The rabbits are fat and lazy. I send them to the butche r and they are made into food. Then a girl shows up. Hold. I hum. Inoculate. and I work. But I like sound. I sneak behi nd them.
I like sounds. I look at her koi-fish hair. She keeps talking to me. Questions. “Just running. away from her. “I saw you running. something. A strange feeling washes over me. . and my head hurts. A sharp pain shoots through my head again. I pay attention not just to which words are said. She a sks about the needles. “Eldest has said we don’t have to speak to you. My heart is loud an d slow. She talks more. “You’re the genetically modified experime nt. I have work to do. She talks a lot. That she wa s

Friendsgonegonegonealonealonealone.” The girl is ma d at me. . questions. but how they are said. I p ay attention to sound. Even the sounds I make. S he is different. and this girl says them angrily. “Hel lo.” the girl says. as if it isn’t strang e to run for no reason.” I say suddenly.” I say. realizi ng that the person I saw before was this girl. I look at the girl. even though I know it is becau se Eldest said she is. I look down.Like the koi in the pond by the Hospital.” I say. Hewillgetmerunrunrunrunrunhide. the bright color in the green fie lds was her koi-fish hair. My voice cracks. She reminds me of . And the sound I am making is fear . I know because of her voice.” the girl says. I wait for her to confirm this is true. “Hello. She asks about the rabbits. B ut she doesn’t go away.
Her voice surprises e. None at all. and she confirms it.
. “He’s gone. She means that she’s sorry.” Gonegonegone. A piece of the st ory will be revealed each day. Gonegonegone.” I say. But then she says. She lives in the Hospit al. “I have no reason to be sad.” The girl sta res at me for so long I think she’s done speaking. please continue on the blog tour. “It was his time. It’s true. “Why?” I ask. “I’m sorry. I have no reason to be sad.” I touch my face.” the girl says. My fingers come away wet with salty tears.
