Learn how to effectively manage whistle-blowing.
Unfair and unethical practices are unfortunate and fairly common in many businesses. If you have ever witnessed unethical behavior by one of your coworkers, then you may be wondering how to deal with the situation in an appropriate manner. One course of action is to report the unethical behavior. While there are several ways to manage whistleblowing, some methods are more effective than others. Knowing how to manage whistleblowing is an important lesson for you and your employees and can make your business run more smoothly.
Identify the unethical behavior in question and determine how it is affecting you or the organization in which you work. Decide whether the problem is worth reporting and if it will put your job or someone else's job in jeopardy.
Create a support group. Find peers and coworkers whom you can trust to keep the issue to themselves. Explain the unethical or illicit behavior and determine the opinion of others. If your coworkers agree, recruit them into your support group.
Determine the correct supervisor or authority figure to whom you will report the problematic behavior. If your boss is committing the behavior in question, identify your boss's supervisor or an external legal figure who has the power to influence the situation.
Blow the whistle. If you fear that whistle-blowing may get you fired or put you into a legal battle, write an anonymous letter or use a third party such as an attorney to report the unethical behavior. Explain the behavior or issue in detail, explain why you believe it is unethical and why it warrants whistle-blowing, as well as how the issue could be resolved.
Whistle blowing and the Media
Now days the media consider about this job and they blow their whistles in different or many cases .For example, There is a real story about the village that the people of it got cancer and one of the village people was lawyers .She tried to search about the important reasons of this problem in the village. After that he discovered that the factory that is in their village they drop their chemical materials on the river .She tried to stop this work by telling the government but she face many problems. Finally she struggles to help the people of her village.
Over the media anyone can give her /his opinions so, many facts will show up. The media is important way that can detect the people in the power position and observe what there are doing. There are many famous business men detected by the media were doing un-ethical things. This is one of the whistle blowing real example in our country.one of the journalist of Al Watan newspaper conducted a study on the effects of smoke that arises from Sohar port that covers both Liwa and parts of Sohar. In his study he found that this smoke caused serious problems for example it kills the livestock, some people death cases. He spread this study in newspaper and online forums. As a result Sohar port decreased their smoke as they can and possible for them. “This is not to say that the media should be the first port of call for all whistleblowers because the mere existence of a free media (whether at home or abroad) has a latent, deterrent effect on misconduct. This is clear from the popular maxim people use when they are faced with a difficult decision – namely, “would I be happy to see my action reported in the media?”This valuable and sensible test leads to one of two results. The first is that you only act in a way for which you are ready to account. The second is you decide you do not have to act in such a way as you will use your influence to try and ensure that you will not have to account for your actions. As whistleblowing is the most effective, if not the only, check on this second course of conduct, the symbiotic relationship between whistleblowing and the role of the media is clear”.
