Catholic Schools Week Begins
JANUARY 14, 2013
Principal’s Corner
Dear Parents,
Catholic Schools Week 2013
“Catholic Schools Raise the Standards” is the theme of our National Catholic Schools Week celebration
scheduled January 25-February 1. The events we’ve planned demonstrate how we at Sacred Heart Catholic
School are striving for high standards and what our students are learning as a result.
High standards are nothing new for Catholic schools, which have long been known for their emphasis on
academic excellence, faith development and commitment to service. Nonetheless, our theme is timely because it
highlights the launch of an initiative, the National Standards and Benchmarks for Effective Catholic Elementary
and Secondary Schools, to ensure consistent high standards at Catholic schools across the country.
The national initiative established a set of defining characteristics for Catholic schools that we have started to
implement such as moving towards the MN state standards, implementing the MCA standardized test next school
year, and eventually moving towards a standards-based report card. I hope you will join us during a fun-filled
week of celebrating our wonderful Catholic school. Please bring your friends and neighbors to our Open House
on Sunday, January 27th, particularly those who may be thinking of Catholic education for their children.
When you visit our school, I’m sure you’ll be as proud of our students as we are. What helps make their
accomplishments possible is the dedication and commitment of our pastor, teachers, staff, school committee
members, parents, and volunteers. I’m thankful for each one of you every day, but I want to make a point-at this
special time of year for Catholic schools-of publicly extending my deepest appreciation to everyone who makes
our school a success.
Devoted in Christ,
Karen Bursey

Lockdown Procedures
Last Wednesday, Robbinsdale Police Officer Beard visited after school, to discuss new lockdown procedures for our students
and staff. He helped us develop a new safety plan to ensure that our students and staff are safe when internal or external
factors deem it necessary to go into school lockdown mode. Because our building is one large campus now, our entire
building will take part in practice drills. The state mandates five practice drills each year. If you are in the building during
one of our practice drills, please be expected to follow the designated procedures.
Please help us stay safe at school. As you enter the building, please do not let anyone follow you in the
building if you do not know the person. Please notify the school office of any suspicious activity or
concerns you may have. Safety is our primary concern.

the schools to take part in the!Catholic United Financial!Annual Catholic Schools Raffle!!This is a very exciting opportunity
for our school! This raffle will take the place of 52 Club in 2013.!
#1 Reason that this is such an exciting opportunity for our school -!
Started in 2009 by sponsor Catholic United Financial, the Catholic Schools Raffle is an annual fundraiser supporting
Catholic schools in Minnesota and the Dakotas. In 2013, more than 80 schools will be participating. Since Catholic United
underwrites ALL expenses for the Raffle, schools get to keep!every penny!of each $5 raffle ticket sold. The money comes into
the school and stays at the school. Our school does not pay for any of the Marketing tools, tickets, promotion, etc. That is all
paid for by Catholic United. More than $30,000 in prizes are given away in the Raffle, including the grand prize: a brand
new SUV!
#2 Reason that this is such an exciting opportunity for our school -!

want the kids to find out before our BIG assembly!!
We will have a Kick Off Assembly on January 17th and I am sure that our students will be VERY excited to sell their tickets

From Risen Christ
Thank you so much for your generous donation to Project Christmas here at Risen Christ. Your generosity will help us provide Christmas gifts and
toys to some of the 180 families who have asked for assistance this year. It is truly humbling to see the miracle that happens each year as the
generosity of unknown “friends” insures that each and every child here at Risen Christ School experiences the special joy of receiving their own
wished-for gifts on Christmas morning.
Thank you for making this miracle happened.
Helen Dahlman, School President
Rediscover!!
As you may know, Sacred Heart Catholic Church, along with parishes, Catholic schools and Catholic ministry organizations throughout the
archdiocese launched the Rediscover: initiative at Christmas. This initiative reaches out to Catholics and invites us all to find meaning and purpose
in life through our shared faith. You can find out more at the website: Rediscover-faith.org. We still have books available in the Parish Commons
area. Please stop by and pick up a book.
