Indian Organic Food & Beverages Market Trends & Opportunities [2012-2017]

View Report Details

Executive Summary
Different certification bodies across the world have varied definitions of organic foods. By definition, organic food items are the ones that are produced and processed using chemical-free methods such as chemical fertilizers, chemical preservatives, or chemical pesticides. Researches and studies have not been able to prove specific health benefits associated with organic food, however, consumers still prefer organic food over conventional food considering it to be a healthier option. In addition, organic farming is also environment friendly and helps restore the goodness of soil. India has historically been an organic farming-based agricultural country, but the scarcity of food crops as a result of growing population changed the fundamentals of the country. The Green Revolution program came

into existence and saved the country from the scarcity of crops in the country. The concept of
consumption of organic food started in the developed nations, however, the trend is gaining importance in the developing countries like India, which is one of the largest exporters of organic food and is fast becoming a big consumer as well. Organic food is priced higher than the conventional food produced due to its high production cost. However, for a value conscious country like India, the pricing factor hampers growth opportunities of the organic food market. Meanwhile, people in the developed nations are more inclined towards processed food items when compared with the consumers of developing nations who prefer fresh fruits and vegetables. The case is quite similar with organic foods as well wherein these food items have a higher demand in developed nations.

On a general level, the awareness among people concerning the difference between organic food and

natural food has been found way less, chiefly because the manufacturers position both the products
similarly. As per the definition, organic food refers to food items produced and manufactured using organic means of production as defined by the certifying bodies, such as the USDA under the Organic Food Products Act. On the other hand, natural food generally refers to food items that are not chemically altered or synthesized in any manner. Natural food items are generally derived from plants and animals and may or may not be organic in nature. Since manufacturers position both the products similarly, natural food items hamper the growth of organic food items. The global organic food & beverages market witnessed healthy growth rates in the past decade as a result of better demand from the developed nations globally. However, the financial crises of 2009 slowed the market growth, which resumed its pace following the fading effects of recession from the world. Globally, the Oceania and European region are the major contributors to the demand of organic food & beverages. According to estimates, India has the highest number of organic farmers around the globe. A large population base plays an important role in driving the market in India. The proportion of organic

farmers to non-organic farmers is still low and the scope for development still pertains in the country.
In India, the states of Mumbai and Delhi claim the highest demand of organic food market currently.
