Bill Ayers has shown he is one of the latter. The Weather Underground terrorist-turned-academic is taking up a cause near and dear to teachers unions: bashing a program that sends young, idealistic college grads into the inner city to teach poor kids. Teach For America has been virtually the only positive force in addressing the repressive environment in poor and minority schools. The “normal” environment in those schools is one of using harmful and technically wrong education approaches that harm all kids but the “gap” kids the most. The big difference between Teach For America (TFA) teachers and “normal” teachers is that the TFA teachers have real subject matter degrees from highly ranked universities such as Harvard, U of Michigan, U of Virginia and Duke University. Education school teacher graduates are not taught subject matter with any rigor and hence the teachers are unprepared to teach effectively as proven by our poor performance on international achievement testing. So what words of wisdom did Bill Ayers, the unrepentant terrorist who blew up government buildings in his youth, have to contribute? Of course, you have to also realize that Ayres is a retired education school professor at U of Chicago. Education professors are as a group the most deluded and self-aggrandizing group involved in our education mess. They don’t know the truth but they promote their beliefs in an “if it isn’t true, it ought to be” fashion. Ayers, Weather Underground terrorist-turned-academic is taking up a cause near and dear to teachers unions: bashing a program that sends young, idealistic college grads into the inner city to teach poor kids. His main complaint is that TFA participants fill jobs that he feels should have been filled by union members. He states it is a fraud because it isn’t going to change teaching but undermine teaching. Would undermining the teaching status quo be a bad thing? Hardly, the current abysmal performance needs undermining. He couldn’t be more wrong but this attack fits the progressive agenda where adult union members get coddled while those who are supposed to benefit from their efforts are continually screwed. Educators often say when being honest about the poor performance of serving kids, “You don’t understand, education is run to
benefit the adults who work here, not the kids.” Why does anyone even bother listening to people like Ayers or union bosses? Because they think they actually have something to say that is worth listening to. If you believe that you are acting to support keeping kids down so that they will eschew individual freedom and responsibly to support progressive “expert control” for the corporate good because they have been brainwashed not to think independently. Union bosses are not as philosophical, they are just greedy. They always “talk” about doing a better job for the kids, but in the end it is more comfortable to preserve the coddled status quo and an environment that among educators is an intellectual wasteland. It is time to realize that the current education system despite educators’ loud protestations is designed to fail in its primary mission of educating kids to their potential. NO REFORMS in the form of bandaids that amount to trying to do the wrong thing better have been effective nor can they ever be. We have to start over from the foundation and build a system that will actually do the job. It is well known what works. Every nation where kids do better than ours on international testing uses the same general education methods which are not the methods we use. Can we in good conscience continue to ignore the obvious at the expense of our kids? If you said no, then what are YOU going to do about it because leaving it to the pseudo education experts will guarantee that the kids will continue to be screwed.
