GREAT PRESS FOR A GREAT LAKE PLACE

NEWS ONLINE 24/7... www.HuronHometownNews.com
By Lisa yako Forty years ago, members of the St. Peters completed a wish list for the parish and school. For many, their list included a new gymnasium. Well, good things often come to those who wait. This past Friday, St. Peters Church and School celebrated the dedication of their new Parish Center and Gymnasium, and the dreams and wishes of these parishioners and others were fulfilled. Members of the parish and community turned out in great numbers to witness the official dedication of the long-anticipated gymnasium which has fittingly been named The Rock. The name given to the gym represents both the characteristics of St. Peter and of the Catholic faith. Bishop Leonard Blair, Bishop of the Toledo Dioceses, and Fr. Jeff Sikorski, Pastor of St. Peters Church, presided over the dedication. Bishop Blair felt the addition of a new gymnasium was fitting for the Catholic school because, he explained, what is important and necessary for our body is also good for our soul. Just as we must discipline our bodies through physical activity, we must discipline ourselves in the love of God and our neighbor Bishop Blair stated. Fr. Sikorski enthusiastically told the crowd that the Rock was under budget, finished ahead of schedule, and paid for. The dedication also included prayers of blessing, tours of the facility, and basketball shooting contests. The Rock, which cost $1,100,000 to complete, was made possible through an anonymous donation of $1 million. The additional $100,000 was raised through selling advertising banners that will hang in the gym for a 5-year term, other donations, and grant money. For Fr. Sikorski, who will be retiring this summer, the completion of the new gym comes with much emotion. My feelings are of gratitude to so many parishioners and members of the community, especially those who served on the Design Committee who have shepherded this project for all these months. They are really responsible for the final product because they went through every detail of drawing and planning and constructing this new building. Its just a joy! And of course, a joy to be connected

St. Peters Holds Dedication for New Gym

A large crowd gathered for the dedication of The Rock this past Friday. to the anonymous donor who has been so generous and committed to our parish, school, and CYO (Christian Youth Organization) program. stated Fr. Sikorski. The Rock is complete except for the installation of lockers in the changing rooms and the placement of a large rock outside the building. Beginning the day after the last day of the school year in June, the old gymnasium will be renovated for use as a preschool classroom and an acoustically sound-proof room for the schools band. St. Peters School wasted no time in putting the gym to good use. The first CYO game was held this past Saturday morning, and gym classes began there on Monday.

Bar Norths Chef Skinner to Participate in Earth to Table Dinner at CVI

By Lisa yako Will Skinner, executive chef at Bar North Bistro in Huron, has been selected to participate in Januarys Earth to Table Dinner to be held Saturday, January 19, at the Culinary Vegetable Institute (CVI) in Milan. This event is intended to bring a chef s creativity and skill to bear on creating something beautiful to the eye and pallet from the bounty of the garden. According to their web site, CVI provides the worlds most innovative chefs with a place to share knowledge, experiment and discover techniques for growing and preparing the most flavorful varieties of vegetables in the world. The collaboration between the garden farmer and the chef and between the old and the new is the foundation of the CVI. The monthly Earth to Table Dinners at CVI not only provide diners with an amazing culinary experience, but a portion of the proceeds fund the programs of Veggie U. Veggie U, the non-profit branch of the Chef s Garden, strives to teach children to explore the exciting world of vegetables, so they have a better chance at leading a healthy life. Veggie U is committed to fostering synergy between educational, nutritional, and agricultural goals to combat the rising epidemic of childhood obesity. Along with Chef Skinner, chefs Carl Swanbeck, John Selick, and Jeff Jarrett will also be preparing the multicourse Earth to Table Dinner this month. Notably, Chef Skinner has succeeded in forming a strong bond with the Chef s Garden and the Jones Family. Bar North not only uses products from many local providers, including the Chef s Garden, but they also are committed to the earth-to-table movement in which bonds are formed between farmers and chefs, resulting in higher quality and healthier foods. Chef Skinner explained that on a recent visit to Bar North, Farmer Lee Jones asked him to be a part of this months Earth to Table dinner. I could not say no, because as a chef the farm-to-table movement is such an important movement to help strengthen the community. This Earth to Table Dinner will be Chef Skinners first time cooking at CVI and something he has always dreamt of doing. He views this opportunity as an extreme honor for Bar North and me as the chef of Bar North. We want to show people the difference from a canned or frozen product to something that is grown more naturally and healthier. Further, Chef Skinner stated that every day at our restaurant we are hoping to strengthen our community by buying from local farmers such as Mr. Hahns farm, Chef s Garden, and many other local purveyors. We think its extremely important, and we want to show people the importance of the slow food movement by shaking up the culinary scene in the Huron area. On Thursday, Chef Skinner will begin his preparation for Saturdays Earth to Table Dinner. He will prepare the opening portion of the meal, the passed appetizers, as well as an entre. Preparation will continue through Friday and Saturday and will culminate when dinner is served at 7:00 PM. If you are interested in experiencing an amazing dinner, tickets are still available and can be purchased by calling CVI at 419-4997500. You must call before 5:00 PM on Friday if you want a ticket. Also, the chefs are willing to accommodate any special dietary needs, but requests must be made in advance. More information on Chef Skinner and the full menu for Saturdays dinner can be viewed at www.culinaryvegetableinstitute.com. If you are not able to attend the Earth to Table Dinner on Saturday but you would like to sample some of Chef Skinners creations, you have plenty of opportunities. Bar North Bistro is open for lunch and dinner daily at 11:00 AM.

Poor diet and lack of exercise two major contributors to risk of heart disease are responsible for at least 25 percent of health-care costs incurred by working adults. It is estimated 2530 percent of companies annual medical costs are spent on employees with excess health risk defined in large part by their risk for cardiovascular disease. Caryl Crane Youth Theatre presents

ANNIE, the best-loved family musical of all time, takes center stage at Caryl Crane Youth Theatre (CCYT) from Friday, February 1, through Sunday, February 10, 2013. Inspired by the famous comic strip Little Orphan Annie, which first ran in the New York News in 1924, ANNIE made its Broadway debut in April 1977 and won seven Tony Awards, including for Best Musical, Best Book, and Best Original Score. This heart-warming musical is the rags-to-riches story of plucky young Annies journey from the hard-knock New York orphanage to the luxurious home of billionaire businessman Oliver Warbucks. Boasting one of Broadways most memorable scores, including Its the Hard Knock Life, Easy Street and the legendary Tomorrow, fantastically visual choreography, a side-splittingly funny script and, of course, the adorable dog Sandy, it really is no surprise that ANNIE has become the best-loved family musical of all time. Featuring 78 students from 19 area schools, ANNIE is directed by Caryl Crane Youth Theatre Artistic Director Brian Marshall, and plays on the McBride Auditorium stage in the North Building on BGSU Firelands Campus Feb 1-10, 2013. Tickets range from $4-$10 and can be purchased at the BGSU Firelands Box Office, or bycalling 419-372-0747. EHOVEs Adult Career Centers Culinary program has added a new component to their program: Tuesday and Thursday lunch service at both EHOVE and the Betty Rinderle School. For very affordable prices, students, staff and the public can enjoy a great mixture of soups, salads, entrees, and desserts. Hours of operation run from 11 am 1 pm every Tuesday and Thursday. Culinary student Tim Bryant of Norwalk says the students plan their menu every Thursday for the following week and overall theyve had a great turnout. We prepare everything Monday and Wednesday nights in our lab, explained Bryant. We add a variety to our menu, including different sandwiches, wraps, Panini, quiche and more. We always include fresh, unique salads. Portions are a good size, too. Bryant will be graduating from the program in May and plans to further his education, then run his own business. Its good practice for people skills and on the job skills, said Culinary student Danny Dechant of Huron. Our Tuesday and Thursdays Lunch Service allow us to experience a real-world setting. This is a customerservice component of our Adult Education Program and a great opportunity to try out new recipes, said Beth Funk, EHOVEs Adult Culinary Instructor. We are open to the public. This is a take-out session where funds help support our program. To get more information or enroll in the next Culinary program at EHOVE Adult Career Center, please contact Beth Funk at 419-499-4663 x313.

According to Curves.com, the 30 minute workout exercises every major muscle group and burns up to 500 calories through a proven program of strength training, cardio, and stretching. The Curves approach is beneficial and appropriate for women of any age and at any stage of health because the workout incorporates a less strenuous approach which means less chance of injury. What is Selling in Erie County:

The Sanctuary at Plum Brook Condos!

New construction is the buzz at The Sanctuary. Coming off one of the worst economic periods in recent history, the Sanctuary is bustling with activity as 12 new homes are under construction and more than half are sold with a waiting list on certain locations, according to Sanctuarys new home specialist, Susie Brant. Stunning condominium homes offer active adults an unburdened lifestyle in the welcoming Sanctuary community where outside maintenance of the attractive European Country designed homes is one of many chores managed by their Condominium Owners Association. Five thoughtfully designed floor plans give buyers a choice within a range of prices and square footage. While each basic plan is one-level, three of the designs offer an optional upstairs bonus suite. Options include gourmet kitchens, hardwood floors, granite, fireplaces, walk-in showers, and private outdoor patio space among many other selections. The bright interiors and open floor plans connect kitchens, dining, and living room areas and optional verandas and sitting rooms for a warm, cozy atmosphere. Near the communitys charming entrance, the clubhouse includes a 24 hour fitness center, heated pool, kitchen, dining area, TV, fireplace, and pool table. Along with exterior maintenance of the buildings, the association also takes care of insurance, water and sewer service, trash removal, snow removal, lawn mowing and maintaining the communitys common areas. Living at The Sanctuary allows your days to belong to you where there are fewer have to-s and time for your want to-s. Imagine yourself having more time to enjoy your family and friends, relaxing at pool, enjoying your hobbies, favorite activity, or sport. Its really about lifestyle according to homeowners Jim and Pam Marchyshyn, The Sanctuary is the ultimate lifestyle development for those who have worked hard and are ready to enjoy the rewards of that hard work. We love the low maintenance and upkeep; the emphasis is on enjoying life. Shopping, restaurants, and all services are less than five minutes away, yet, you feel like you live in the country. Plus, a great clubhouse and pool are part of the total package. The Marchyshyns love the communities European Country looks! They go on to say, It totally works, is unique to the

area, stylish without being cookie cutter. The homes have great curb appeal. The build quality and fit is outstanding with floor plans designed for an active, non-stressful living. You will not find a more passionate, informed and helpful team, totally into the community and the residents. There are never problems just solutions. Its a great feeling to know the Sanctuary team is managing your new lifestyle in your best interests. Jim and Pam Marchyshyn, happy with their choice. Conveniently located just off Hull Road in

Huron Township across from Plum Brook Country Club, the Sanctuary is minutes from shopping, restaurants, and many local area attractions. Whether youre just curious or genuinely interested in right-sizing your home and improving your lifestyle, come in and see what The Sanctuary has to offer. The Sanctuarys friendly staff will be happy to show you around and answer all your questions. Call for an appointment 419-609-0099 or stop in.
