GREAT PRESS FOR A GREAT LAKE PLACE
Vol. 8 Number 3
NEWS ONLINE 24/7... www.HuronHometownNews.com
By Lisa yako Forty years ago, members of the St. Peters completed a wish list for the parish and school. For many, their list included a new gymnasium. Well, good things often come to those who wait. This past Friday, St. Peters Church and School celebrated the dedication of their new Parish Center and Gymnasium, and the dreams and wishes of these parishioners and others were fulfilled. Members of the parish and community turned out in great numbers to witness the official dedication of the long-anticipated gymnasium which has fittingly been named The Rock. The name given to the gym represents both the characteristics of St. Peter and of the Catholic faith. Bishop Leonard Blair, Bishop of the Toledo Dioceses, and Fr. Jeff Sikorski, Pastor of St. Peters Church, presided over the dedication. Bishop Blair felt the addition of a new gymnasium was fitting for the Catholic school because, he explained, what is important and necessary for our body is also good for our soul. Just as we must discipline our bodies through physical activity, we must discipline ourselves in the love of God and our neighbor Bishop Blair stated. Fr. Sikorski enthusiastically told the crowd that the Rock was under budget, finished ahead of schedule, and paid for. The dedication also included prayers of blessing, tours of the facility, and basketball shooting contests. The Rock, which cost $1,100,000 to complete, was made possible through an anonymous donation of $1 million. The additional $100,000 was raised through selling advertising banners that will hang in the gym for a 5-year term, other donations, and grant money. For Fr. Sikorski, who will be retiring this summer, the completion of the new gym comes with much emotion. My feelings are of gratitude to so many parishioners and members of the community, especially those who served on the Design Committee who have shepherded this project for all these months. They are really responsible for the final product because they went through every detail of drawing and planning and constructing this new building. Its just a joy! And of course, a joy to be connected
A large crowd gathered for the dedication of The Rock this past Friday. to the anonymous donor who has been so generous and committed to our parish, school, and CYO (Christian Youth Organization) program. stated Fr. Sikorski. The Rock is complete except for the installation of lockers in the changing rooms and the placement of a large rock outside the building. Beginning the day after the last day of the school year in June, the old gymnasium will be renovated for use as a preschool classroom and an acoustically sound-proof room for the schools band. St. Peters School wasted no time in putting the gym to good use. The first CYO game was held this past Saturday morning, and gym classes began there on Monday.

Poor diet and lack of exercise two major contributors to risk of heart disease are responsible for at least 25 percent of health-care costs incurred by working adults. It is estimated 2530 percent of companies annual medical costs are spent on employees with excess health risk defined in large part by their risk for cardiovascular disease. Worksite wellness programs are a proven strategy to prevent the major risk factors for cardiovascular disease. By creating a wellness environment, companies can help lower healthcare costs and protect its most important resource their employees. The American Heart Association (AHA) recently honored Fisher-Titus for the second time with its highest tier of recognition as a Platinum Fit-Friendly Company for its continuing employee wellness efforts. Physical activity and employee wellness are important priorities at Fisher-Titus Medical Center. We are honored and excited to be recognized by the American Heart Association as a Platinum Fit-Friendly Company, said Lorna Strayer, Fisher-Titus Executive Vice President. Fisher-Titus Diabetes Education Sponsors Community Forum on Carbohydrates
For people with diabetes, carbohydrates are often thought of as the enemy, but not all carbohydrates are created equal. The key to a diabetes-friendly diet is choosing the appropriate types and amount of carbohydrate-rich foods. Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet supplying the body with the energy needed for the muscles, brain and central nervous system. Fisher-Titus Medical Centers certified diabetes educators Tracy Stadler and Brandi Roeder will present The Truth about Carbohydrates at 5 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24 in the hospital Auditorium, 272 Benedict Ave., Norwalk. Learn more about the different types of carbohydrates and which foods provide important nutrients that promote health, not just empty calories. To register, call 419-660-2596.
