Date: January 22, 2013 To: All Staff From: Brian Daly It is with deep regret that we announce the departure of a number of our valued colleagues in the People and Transformation Division of the Toronto Star and Star Media Group. These staff reductions are necessary to reduce the Star’s costs in light of the continued revenue challenges facing our company and our industry. The following individuals are leaving the organization: Iain McMeekin, Managing Director of Human Resources. Iain has devoted close to ten years to advancing human resources practices within Torstar, initially with the Hamilton Spectator, City Media Group and Metroland West, where he rose to the position of VP Human Resources. Iain transferred to the Star in 2007 and has been a valued member of the senior HR management team since that time. Diana Hardy, Executive Assistant and HR Program Coordinator, who has provided effective administrative support to the division since joining the company in 2011, Philippa Whitehead, Labour Relations Specialist, who has been a core member of the LR Department since 2008. All three individuals performed valued and important roles, and their contributions will be greatly missed. Their job responsibilities will be reviewed and reassigned among the remaining staff in the People and Transformation Division. An assessment is also being conducted on a variety of Star Media Group’s HR programs and services to identify ways to deliver effective service at a reduced cost. These steps are a necessary part of the effort to rebalance the Star’s cost base in light of revenue trends. Further announcements on revised reporting relationships, job responsibilities and contact points will follow in the near future. In the interim, please refer any labour relations items to Alan Bower, and any general HR management or administration items to me. We extend best wishes to Iain, Diana and Philippa in their future endeavours. Brian Daly
