Habit 2 -- Begin with the End in Mind Principles of Personal Leadership
What it Means
 

To begin with the end in mind is to begin with the image of the end of your life as the frame of reference by which everything else is measured. We may be busy, we may be efficient, but we will only be effective if we begin with the end in mind.

All Things are Created Twice

Habit 2 is based on the principle that all things are created twice: o a mental or first creation o a physical or second creation Most endeavors that fail, fail with the first creation.

By Design or Default There is a first creation to every part of our lives. We are either the second creation of our own proactive creation, or we are the second creation of other people's agendas, of circumstances, or of past habits. Leadership and Management

Habit 2 is based on principles of personal leadership, which means that leadership is the first creation. Management is the second creation. Management is doing things right, leadership is doing the right things. Often people get into managing with efficiency, setting and achieving goals before they have even clarified values.

Rescripting: Becoming Your Own First Creator Proactivity is based on the endowment of self-awareness. Two additional endowments enable us to expand our proactivity and to exercise personal leadership in our lives:

A Personal Mission Statement

What is at the center of your life? Alternative Centers          Spouse centeredness Family centeredness Money centeredness Work centeredness Possession centeredness Pleasure centeredness Friend/enemy centeredness Church centeredness Self centeredness A Principle Center   Our lives need to be centered on correct principles -. there's an exchange between the Cheshire Cat and Alice that goes like this: "Cheshire Puss. As a principle centered person. and what you value. you have the essence of your own proactivity. "I don't much care where. classic truths. the vision and values which direct your life. and power. Once you have a sense of mission. rather timidly. you try stand apart from the emotions of situations and from other factors to evaluate options.deep.   The most effective way to begin with the end in mind is to develop a personal mission statement.. At the Center   Whatever is at the center of our life will be the source of our security. which way I ought to go from here?" "That depends a good deal on where you want to get to. the basic direction from which you set your goals. generic common denominators..   In "Alice in Wonderland". The key to the ability to change is a changeless sense of who you are." said Alice. wisdom. please. guidance..

you now have the answer to the question. The key point of our discussion comes from Covey’s second habit. specifically. While most people have short sited vision on the next sale. By putting a little more creative energy into the big picture – the end result you are trying to achieve. This is what life is like for a lot of people: they simply don't know where they're going. by limiting the scope of the projects to the getting-started steps. the first sales. along with some of the immediate follow up products. promptly inserts a new starting point for your project. It’s actually better to work backwards from your goal and only then map it out. you need an end result in mind. and what this brand will stand for and provide. If you don’t. or business? Of course you do. Putting this notion as one of the first items on the list of to-do’s. This approach is obviously very important as it simultaneously defines and explains your brand. what do I do today that will help me get to my end result? When this question is answered. you can develop a plan to reach that ideal customer or client or long term project. you will have the focus of the initial product. think further down the line… Second Habit of Seven Habits of Highly Effective People … in a nutshell End result… Work backwards… By deciding on the focus of the first product. we can certainly help you. getting clear on the “End” you have in mind. and short term goals and giving your life meaning and direction. AND. next product or next customer…. mid term. more sharply defined. the wisdom of creating your first product (the one that makes the first impression) or project or brand or business strategy as high a quality as you can with the end in mind will get you off that eternal treadmill. That is. or serving. Do you have a big picture vision for your brand. or potential projects – with the end in mind – then the creative process for bringing the product or project into physical form becomes quite a bit easier to accomplish. life. Then why is it that most people don’t actually hit their goals? What are they missing that prevents them – more often than not – from realizing that vision? Seven Habits of Highly Effective People – Habit #2: Begin with the End in Mind Most people don’t hit their goals because they don’t know how to map out a plan to get there. “Begin with the End in Mind”. selling. In the beginning. it becomes a little easier to focus on the steps you can take as you progress towards that goal. while your products or ideas or services loudly delivers on this brand promise. Whether you are creating. By focusing on the big picture (and focusing on another concept – “Go Slow to Go Fast”).
