Research Guide of the Month:
Finding a Paper Topic
If you’re thinking about writing a paper in the spring, but aren’t sure how you’ll find a topic, we have a guide for you. Our LibGuide on Finding a Paper Topic lists library resources you can use to both get ideas and to make sure your ideas haven’t been covered before. Check it out at http://bit.ly/br-findtopic. Digital Collections: Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr.
We are pleased to announce the release of the Oliver Wendell Holmes, Jr. Digital Suite, comprised of five manuscript collections as well as three image groups related to the Civil War veteran, HLS alumnus, and Supreme Court Justice. The Library’s Digital Lab developed the new 3D (Discovery and Delivery of Digital collections) platform, enabling exploration of all eight sub-collections via one access point. Searches can be easily refined with the site’s faceted search function, and site visitors are encouraged to add their own tags for topics, names, dates, and locations to items they view. Visit at http://bit.ly/br-owhsuite. Seen above: Holmes’s 20th Massachusetts Infantry Medal.
Hot Chocolate Study Break
The chilly month of January is the perfect excuse to take a break with a nice cup of hot chocolate. The Crimson has reviewed several hot chocolate options around campus. Check out the reviews at http://bit.ly/ crimsonhotc, or for something fancier, try Finale on Dunster Street, which offers four types of specialty hot chocolate.
Resource Spotlight: HeinOnline
Catch a Movie at Coolidge Corner
There are many theaters in Boston, but did you know the Coolidge Corner Theatre in Brookline (66 bus or take the Red Line to Park Street, then transfer to the C line) regularly runs special events? From After Midnight shows to silent films to Science on Screen, they have a film series for everyone. This month, try a screening of the London Royal Opera’s Carmen (Jan. 20) or a Science on Screen showing of Rushmore followed by a talk by a child psychiatrist (Jan. 28). For more info, visit http:// www.coolidge.org.
Have you used HeinOnline lately? Hein is a digital collection of legal and law-related materials organized into modules called libraries, covering a range of subjects from Law Journals to Congressional documents to legal history. Unlike other databases, everything in Hein goes back to the first issue and is full text searchable in PDF, thus providing access to a work’s complete contents. If you’re looking for an early 20th–century law review article, a 19th–century Senate debate, or 18th–century Massachusetts session law, Hein is your database!
