Preparing for a career in Law
The law is embedded in all aspects of society. Law schools want individuals with wide-ranging interests and ideas. (They plan to teach you the law.) Students prepare for law school by choosing a major they like and is well suited to them. Majors such as history, philosophy, sociology, psychology, English and business are common in law school (but any degree is acceptable). Recognizing the above, D’Youville has created a pre-law minor to help you focus on your legal career. The minor includes courses in economics, business, politics and law–areas in which a vast majority of lawyers work. The minor also includes a course in logic which is basic to legal ideas and to preparation for the Law School Admissions Test (LSAT), required for entrance into law school. Additionally, students in this minor take extra writing intensive courses to maintain and develop writing skills, an ability the legal profession requires. Students with the pre-law minor have a pre-law advisor to help them examine the range of law school options. An LSAT preparation course will be available in your senior year.

Career Opportunities in your field

A good attorney is always in demand! And, since the law is the cornerstone of how our society functions, lawyers and the practice of law will always be needed to resolve disputes, regulate our affairs and pursue the cause of justice. Career opportunities in law will continue to grow and expand in the foreseeable future. Qualified attorneys may find job opportunities in all levels of government, law firms, private industry, the military or in private practice. No matter what kind of law you choose to practice, the profession will always find a place for those who excel in the craft. A career in law still remains a well-established and lauded profession for those who choose to make the commitment.
