Part 3: (40) Design proposal and prototype Case Scenario: Film Production Company LAN Design and implementation
You work for Network_Design Company, specializing in the design; implementation and support of computer network systems. One of their new clients is the Film_Production Company which is expanding and acquiring new contracts from different clients for the production of wide range of films and multimedia products and animations. So its Local area network is expanding rapidly, and its staff requires a modern LAN put in places that can cater for their converged LAN. As a member of the design team in the Network_Design Company you have been given the task to produce a LAN design proposal and a prototype that can be used by the design team when they present their design proposal to the Film_Production company management and IT teams. To complete this task you need to: 3.1 Produce a Hierarchical design proposal for a converged and secure LAN (20) 3.1.1 Highlight the implications of using Ethernet technology (CSMA/CD 802.3 standards) on the LAN, and propose to the company possible solutions to deal collision and broadcast domains. (8) Propose a Network LAN design specification for the Film company network (12) Analyze the hierarchical design model and use to propose and illustrate design solutions. Outline and analyze the functions of each layer and their advantages and benefits for this design proposal and implementation. Use physical and logical diagrams and appropriate standard networking devices. Outline the key technologies and modern developments that you can implement to address LAN design issues to solve performance, availability, security, scalability, maintainability & manageability issues in a converged network (support voice, video and data) for both wired and wireless LAN of the Film_production Company LAN. 3.2 Address any legal or ethical implications or compliance issues related to the implementation of a LAN in relation to privacy security and data protection etc...(8) 3.3 Implement your design on basic prototype using Packet tracer as a simulation program to test the hierarchical and LANs design model, and also to implement and test an IP addressing scheme of your choice, your VLAN and VLAN routing etc(12) Additional note: While producing your report make sure to look into LAN bandwidth analyses requirement and show how the use of a hierarchical design, Layer 2 switching concepts and technologies, protocols and techniques are used to improve LAN implementation, efficiency, security 3

and accessibility to network resources, and Identify and justify appropriate network devices and techniques required. Analyse the many issues that face modern LAN design, such as collision and broadcast domains, network latency, LAN segmentation, Redundancy. Security and the tools and techniques used to deal with these issues and implement an efficient LAN, some of these tools and technologies are Virtual LAN, VLAN trunking protocols, Spanning tree protocols, Inter VLAN routing techniques and protocols. Also analyse and discuss Wireless technologies and standards such as 802.11 (a, b, and g) technologies, products and solutions to deal with wireless security, Vendor interoperability strategies, and the new and ever changing emerging wireless technologies.

LAN Design Considerations

Your design proposal should take into consideration the following possible groups, hosts and services required in the new LAN design for the Film_Production Company LAN. This should be used as a guide in the hierarchical design structure, deciding on the IP addressing scheme, VLANs groups etc...

Management hosts and secure peripherals (payroll printer) 10 Administrative hosts 40 High performance production workstations (stationary) 100 Mobile/wireless production hosts, Wireless services 50 Voice support for Voice over IP services 200 Network support hosts and services 18 Server farm to support video services and storage (couple hundred servers) Server farm for public access 16 Peripherals for general use (printers, scanners) 60 Note: In your packet tracer prototype implementation, it is not necessary to include the exact numbers of hosts, but just samples of each, for presentation and illustration purposes.
