Author Salman Rushdie says he had to be

quite ruthless to his novel Midnight Chil-
dren while writing the screenplay for its big
screen adaptation.
Directed by Deepa Mehta, the movie Mid-
nights Children is an adaptation of Rush-
dies 1980 Booker Prize winnig novel.
I had to be pretty ruthless. There are many
parts of the novel, the incidents, that we had
to decide, were not essential for the central
storyline, Rushdie said Thursday during an
event organised by Landmark Book Store.
Really, that was the question. The ques-
tion we always asked ourselves during the
scripting of the flm was what is essential
for the story? And it was very diffcult for
Midnights Children because it is a very di-
gressive novel and has so many sub-plots,
some of them, which I feel are quite enjoy-
able.
But in this thing (the flm), we had to ruth-
lessly say, what is that line which grabs the
attention of the audience and drags them
through two hours in cinema? And using
that criteria we had to sacrifce a lot, he
added.
The flm features an ensemble cast of Sa-
tya Bhabha, Shriya Saran, Siddharth, Anu-
pam Kher, Shabana Azmi, Seema Biswas,
Shahana Goswami, Rahul Bose, Soha Ali
Khan and Darsheel Safary. Distributed by
PVR Pictures, the flm will hit Indian screen
Feb 1.

FAILURE OF GOVERNANCE
Says Verma Panel
i-:
The three-member committee, headed by Justice J.S. Verma, constituted to look into
rape laws in the wake of the gruesome gang-rape of the 23-year-old physiotherapist
trainee on Dec 16, submitted its report to the government Wednesday. It stopped short
of recommending death penalty for gang-rape.
Some of the recommendations that the Justice Verma Committee has made are Life
imprisonment for gang-rape, speedy justice for the victims, review of the Armed Forces
(Special Powers) Acts working, and community policing .

OPINION
Nitin Gadkari suffered the proverbial last
minute upset to make way for Rajnath Singh
as the national chief of BJP. As the nation
gears up for a fresh round of general elec-
tions slated for the next year, rulers and the
challengers are busy setting up the orders
of battle. Amongst all serious contenders
for the throne of Delhi, BJP is the only one
to have an amorphous and diffused form of
leadership known as collective leadership.
The phenomenon of collective leadership
makes for an interesting media spectacle
and offers us a glimpse of what a competitive
power struggle looks like. The winners and
losers of such a high stakes power struggle
make for gripping reality television. It is this
public spectacle of collective decision mak-
ing regarding Nitin Gadkari and his struggle
for second term as BJP president that came
to occupy mind space of the nation. With re-
cent ABP-Nielsen and India Today surveys
predicting a bounce for the BJP led National
Democratic Alliance, many politicians in the
BJP see themselves a step closer to the holy
grail of Indian politics, the post of Prime Min-
ister of the Republic.
The intrigues by colleagues, praetorian
guard of RSS, use of government agencies,
last minute turnarounds and allegations of
corruption have made the fght for BJPs
leadership a gripping sitcom straight out of
Ekta Kapoors K series. While there may
not be any larger message in replacement
of Gadkari with Rajnath, the hoopla around
BJP presidential election has managed to
drag back public interest into the inner work-
ings of main political parties of India. The en-
gagement of citizens with political processes
however banal or superfcial they may be
can only lead to better processes.
The Power of
Social Media
What struck the Middle Eastern and North
African regimes last year has fnally reached
the Indian shores. No, we are not talking
about some random coloured revolution
rather it is the mainstreaming of the social
media discourse. The acknowledgement
coming from none other than the grand old
party of India, the Indian National Congress
at the conclusion of its Jaipur based Chintan
Shivir. The Congress has realized that tradi-
tional media is no longer able to control the
discourse and it is inadequately represented
on the social media, thus it has constituted
a Rs 100 crore warchest to build presence
on social media. The amount being invested
heralds the coming of age of social media in
Indian polity.
The social media comprising of Facebook,
Twitter, Instagram and others was earlier
thought to be a preserve of geeks and tech-
nologically inclined youth. There existed a
certain dividing line that separated the social
media from the traditional media and its dis-
course. Increased Internet penetration and
frustration with the traditional media shifted
a section of thinking and opinionated individ-
uals to the platform of social media. The shift
got accentuated in the aftermath of popular
civil society movements like Baba Ramdevs
and Anna Hazares Lokpal movement.
Globally the power of organization and in-
formation dissemination was harnessed by
dissident organizations to topple unpopu-
lar governments. The demonstration ef-
fect of this led to exponential growth and
mainstreaming of the social media in India.
Hence the ruling dispensation has legitimate
reasons to be worried regarding the rise of
social media and is making amends to its
earlier neglect of this emerging media.

Patriotic song Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon turns 50
It is a song that is sung on every patriotic oc-
casion, had moved Indias frst prime minis-
ter, Jawaharlal Nehru, to tears and its strong
morale-boosting words provided solace to a
nation agonized by the defeat in the 1962
India-China war.
Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon (O people of my
land), penned by National Poet Pradeep,
was written shortly after the war and served
to unite the masses who were seething with
rage over the battering the Indian forces re-
ceived.
Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon, perhaps revered
next only to the National Anthem (Jana Gana
Mana) and the National Song (Vande Mata-
ram), as also Saare Jahan Se Aacha, was
frst rendered before a packed National Sta-
dium in the capital on a cold Jan. 27 evening
exactly 50 years ago - by Lata Mangeshkar.
The distinguished audience included presi-
dent S. Radhakrishnan, prime minister Neh-
ru, cabinet ministers, virtually the entire flm
industry comprising stalwarts like Dilip Kumar
and late actors Dev Anand, Raj Kapoor, Ra-
jendra Kumar, singers Mohammed Raf, He-
mant Kumar and many more.
A tribute to the war heroes and martyrs, the
song enabled the young and the old to con-
trol and overcome the anger of defeat. Its
popularity continues unabated after 50 years
- and remains a must play at all major na-
tional celebrations and events.
Theres an interesting story behind the songs
origin.
Pradeep, who was as despondent as every
other Indian after the 1962 war, was walk-
ing the Mahim beach in Mumbai when the
words suddenly came to him. He borrowed
a pen from a fellow walker, wripped out the
foil from his cigarette packet and penned the
frst stanza: Ae Mere Watan Ke Logon/Aank-
hon Me Bhar Lo Paani/Jo Shaheed Huei Hai
Unki/Zara Yaad Karo Kurbani.
Some weeks later producer Mehboob Khan
approached him for an opening song for a
fund-raiser he was organising at the Nation
Stadium. Pradeep said he would do so but
would not reveal any details. He then roped
in Lata Mangeshkar and music director C.
Ramchandra and the rest, as they say, is his-
tory.
Pradeep, (whose 98th birth anniversary will
be observed next month), was born Ram-
chandra Narayanji Dwivedi on Feb. 6, 1915
in Badnagar (near Ujjain) in what is now Mad-
hya Pradesh.
From his early days, Dwivedi displayed a pa-
triotic fervor which continued in college and
in later life. He penned around 1,700 poems
and songs for 72 movies.
However, it was a patriotic song in Bandhan
(1940), Chal Chal Re Naujawan, which
became hugely popular and he was widely
noticed as the freedom movement was just
cresting.
Some of the notable ones include Aao

Sambhal Ke, De Di Hame Azaadi Bina Kha-

Haalat Kya Ho Gayi Bhagwan, Kitna Badal

He later became Kavi Pradeep and was
showered with honours and awards, includ-
ing the Dadasaheb Phalke Award-1997, a
year before his demise on Dec. 11, 1998.
In his light grey prison issue tracksuit and
sneakers, David Coleman Headley looked
like an elderly man back from his morning
jog. An air of casual self-assuredness that
had characterized his nearly week-long tes-
timony in May, 2011, against his childhood
friend Tahawwur Hussain Rana, was on dis-
play yet again as a 35-year-long sentence
was handed down to him.
With no shackles in his ankles the 52-year-
old six feet plus key Mumbai terror plotter
stood with his hands behind his back and
legs apart. He betrayed no particular emo-
tion at the fact that his unfettered existence
was effectively over. By the time he comes
out of prison he will be nearly 80 years old
since he is not entitled to federal parole and
is required to serve 85 percent of his sen-
tence.
From Indias perspective the sentence may
seem relatively light. However, the next
nearly 30 years that he will have to be in
prison coupled with a plea bargain deal that
mandates him to basically do whatever the
government directs him to do in perpetuity
is way tougher than it might seem on paper.
What New Delhi will have to bear in mind
is that at any time the US government can
rescind his plea bargain if it determines that
Headley is deliberately holding back infor-
mation because he no longer has any in-
centive of a reduced sentence after the pro-
nouncement. He waved his right to appeal
soon after his arrest on Oct 3, 2009.
Gary Shapiro, acting US attorney for the
Northern District of Illinois, told the local Hi
India newspaper that plea bargain deals are
essentially for life. It means that Headley will
have to cooperate in the best possible way
throughout his incarceration. Of course, the
value of any information or intelligence he
provides will naturally diminish over time
and a stage will be reached when he will no
longer be useful as a source of actionable
intelligence.
The most striking aspect of the points made
before Headleys sentencing was the great
and repeated emphasis that both the prose-
cution and the defense put on the extent and
quality of his cooperation. His attorney John
Theis, in requesting for a lighter sentence,
said the information that Headley provided
was so profound that it calls for extraordi-
nary downward departure.
According to Hi India, Headley was arrested
only in connection with the plot for plan-
ning to carry out a spectacular attack on the
Danish newspaper Morgenavisen Jyllands-
Posten for its 2005 publication of cartoons of
the Prophet Mohammed which many Mus-
lims found offensive. The information about
his involvement in the Mumbai attacks came
solely from him. It was only after his arrest
that the investigators became aware of his
involvement in the Mumbai terror attacks as
disclosed by him.
The cynical explanation of his extraordinary
cooperation is that he was merely trying to
save his skin by volunteering so much, so
easily. Some of the interrogation videos,
which were played during his testimony,
showed a man almost desperate to cooper-
ate. So much so that at one point he sound-
ed upset that the federal investigators were
not fully utilizing his information to make ma-
jor arrests. To many Headleys eagerness
to cooperate and help effect major arrests
looked to be part of a strategy to mitigate his
own complicity.
It has baffed many why a man once so
deeply immersed in an extreme version of
Islam known as Salafsm can change so
radically as to seriously undermine its other
adherents by exposing them. Salaf adher-
ents treat the companions of the Prophet
Mohammed and the two immediate genera-
tions of Muslims that followed as their role
model. Headley said the Lashkar-e-Tayyiba
(LeT) believes being a Salaf is a prerequi-
site to jihad.
One plausible explanation could be what
even Judge Harry Leinenweber zeroed in
on. He pointed out how Headley had a histo-
ry of being arrested and then fnding his way
out of it by cooperating with the authorities.
He was referring to Headleys two arrests in
the past in connection with narcotics smug-
gling and how he managed to come out of
prison on fairly positive terms in exchange
for cooperation.

Verma panel
hailed for not
seeking death
for rape
No lower age limit
for juvenile
delinquents:
Justice Verma
Justice Verma panel for
amendment to AFSPA
Justice J.S. Verma committee, refused to
propose lowering the legally defned age for
juvenile delinquents from 18 to 16 years.
The condition of juvenile homes in the
country is pathetic, Justice Verma said at a
press conference after submitting his report
to the union home ministry.
In the report, the committee observed that
juvenile homes in the country were not being
run in a manner consistent with the spirit of
the Juvenile Justice Act.
The state should ensure constitution of wel-
fare committees, juvenile boards and infra-
structural in childrens homes.
The quality of food, the quality of counsel-
ling and psychotherapy required to wipe out
scars of abuse and deprivation in early child-
hood should be ensured.
We are shocked to note that so many of
these children have been forced into bonded
labour, Justice Verma observed.
The condition of juveniles came under focus
following the claim by one of the accused
in the Dec 16 Delhi gang-rape here that he
was legally a minor, not having attained the
age of 18 years.
The Justice J.S. Verma Committee recom-
mended amendment to the Armed Forces
(Special Powers) Act (AFSPA). The propos-
al was a part of the report to suggest ways
to make rape laws stringent in the country.
In its 631-page voluminous report, the three-
member committee has proposed amend-
ment to Section 6 of the AFSPA which gives
the Indian armed forces arbitrary powers
in the states that have been declared dis-
turbed areas riddled with militancy.
No prosecution, suit or other legal proceed-
ings shall be instituted, except sanction of
the central government, against any person
in respect of anything done or purported to
be done in exercise of the powers conferred
by this act, stated the report.
Currently, Jammu and Kashmir and four
northeast states Manipur, Arunachal
Pradesh, Nagaland, and Assam are under
the AFSPA. Security personnel have been
accused of committing rapes in these re-
gions where the forces enjoy special powers
to tackle militancy and insurgency.
Rights activists have been demanding revo-
cation of the AFSPA from these regions.
The Verma commitee was set up in the wake
of the gruesome gang-rape and assault of a
trainee physiotherapist in Delhi Dec 16 night
in a moving bus which led to a nationwide
outrage. The woman died in a Singapore
hospital 13 days later.
Womens groups and lawyers hailed the J.S.
Verma Committee, tasked to review laws re-
lated to crimes against women, for not get-
ting swayed by public opinion demanding
capital punishment for rape.
I am glad that he has not got swayed by the
public demand for hanging, said lawyer and
womens rights activist Kamini Jaiswal.
She added that she agreed with all the rec-
ommendations made by the three-member
panel, which besides Justice Verma had for-
mer additional solicitor general Gopal Sub-
ramanium and former Himachal Pradesh
High Court Chief Justice Leila Seth as its
members.
Welcoming the report, Annie Raja of the Na-
tional Federation of Indian Women said: All
our concerns have found place in the report.
We were not in favour of chemical castra-
tion or death penalty. Our only concern was
that there is fast punishment for rapists, she
said.
She said the government should immediate-
ly accept the report.
We are anxious as our past experience
shows that good suggestions have been re-
jected by the government, said Annie Raja.
Ranjana Kumari of the Centre for Social
Research said the report has made a big
departure from the way sexual assault was
viewed. He (Verma) has made good re-
marks on marital rape and womens rights
over their body.
On the issue of death penalty for rapists, she
said, during public hearings womens organ-
isations were against death penalty as it was
only given in the rarest of rare cases.
Death penalty goes up to the president for
clemency petitions...so it might happen that
they escape without getting it (death) as only
46 people have been given capital punish-
ment in India till date, she said.
Anyway, we are a civilised society and we
cant make it brutal by endorsing capital pun-
ishment. We all wanted life imprisonment till
death for rape, Ranjana Kumari added.
Agreeing with her views, former chief justice
of the Delhi High Court Rajinder Sachar said
it was commendable that the panel had not
recommended death penalty.
Now it is time for the government to take ac-
tion. They would be wasting time if they refer
it to a sub-committee or something. Every-
body knows the issues, they (government)
should just accept the recommendations,
he said.
Life imprisonment for gang-rape, but no
death penalty even if the victim dies or is re-
duced to a vegetative state, were among the
recommendations of the Verma panel.
The committee, which was tasked to look
into possible amendments to the criminal law
for quicker trial and enhanced punishment
for rapists, submitted its report to Home Min-
ister Sushilkumar Shinde exactly 29 days
after it was set up following the gruesome
gang-rape of a 23-year-old woman in Delhi
Dec 16, 2012.
New Delhi
Life imprisonment for gang-rape, but no
death penalty even if the victim dies or is re-
duced to a vegetative state, were among the
recommendations of the Justice J.S. Verma
panel Wednesday.
The three-member committee, tasked to
look into possible amendments to the crimi-
nal law for quicker trial and enhanced pun-
ishment for rapists, submitted its report to
Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde exactly
29 days after it was set up follow-
ing the gruesome gang-rape of a
23-year-old Delhi woman Dec 16.
Gang-rape will entail a punish-
ment of not less than 20 years,
but which also may extend to
life. Gang-rape followed by death
shall be punished with life im-
prisonment, Justice Verma told
reporters after submitting the re-
port.
Punishment for causing death or
a persistent vegetative state shall
be given rigorous imprisonment
for a term which shall not be less
than 20 years but may be for life
also, which shall mean the rest of
the persons life, said the 631-
page report.
Justice Verma said the commit-
tee has not suggested death
penalty for rapists because there
were overwhelming suggestions
from the women organisations
against it.
The panel recommended that stalking, acid
attacks and voyeurism should be consid-
ered separate crimes, but suggested seven
years for acid attacks as well as voyeurism,
that includes making MMS clips and passing
it on to others.
It said traffcking should be punishable with
rigorous imprisonment for a term between
seven years to 10 years.
Stalking or attempts to contact a person re-
peatedly through any means shall be liable
to get a term of up to three years, it said.
The committee, however, did not suggest
lowering the legally defned age of juvenile
from 18 to 16 years - a demand by women
activists after one of the accused involved in
the Delhi gang-rape was found to be below
18 years.
In its recommendations, the committee
came down heavily on the administration,
including the police as well as citizens, for
not helping the grievously wounded young
woman and her friend who were thrown off
the bus after the brutal gang-rape.
The panel also commented on the disputes
relating to jurisdiction of the police over the
area of crime that leads to delay in taking
cognizance - an allegation made by the vic-
tims male friend.
It also took an open dig at the peculiarity
of the Delhi government of not having the
power over the police and said this ambi-
guity needs to be removed to maintain law
and order and ensure accountability.
The apathy of civil society in not coming
forward to help the couple also came in for
criticism from the committee.
It also slammed Delhi Police for using ba-
tons on the anti-rape agitators, saying it has
scarred the Indian democracy.
Justice Verma said the government with its
might and resources should act fast and
place the report before parliament in the
coming budget session.
Hailing the youths of the country for their
spontaneous show against the gang-rape,
Justice Verma said he was struck by the
peaceful manner in which they led the mass
movement in the national capital.
It was an humbling experience... the youth
taught us, the older generation, said Justice
Verma, a former chief justice of India and
ex-chairman of the National Human Rights
Commission.
The panel, which included former chief jus-
tice of Himachal Pradesh Justice Leila Seth
and former Additional Solicitor General Go-
pal Subramanium, also proposed a Bill of
Rights for women that entitles every woman
a life of dignity and integrity.
The bill suggests that a woman is entitled
to have the right to express and experience
complete sexual autonomy, including with
respect to her relationships and choice of
partners.
Even as it held that present laws are suf-
fcient to maintain law and order, the com-
mittee report said, Speedy justice was es-
sential for effcacy of the law and its desired
impact.
Coming down heavily on violations by the
armed forces, the committee said the bru-
talities of the forces faced by residents in
border areas have led to a deep disenchant-
ment and lack of mainstreaming of such
people in civil society.
Subramanium, a committee member, also
said security personnel should be tried un-
der common law if they are accused in sex-
ual assault cases.
Justice Verma said there was very poor
response from state police chiefs at pub-
lic meetings called by the committee while
preparing the report and asked for review of
their appointments.
But, he said the committee got 80,000 sug-
gestions from India and abroad from women
activists to students.
He also said that it was shocking that the
union home secretary praised the Delhi Po-
lice chief for prompt action in catching the
six males involved in the Dec 16 gang-rape
of the young woman who died 13 days later
in a Singapore hospital.
He should have asked for his apology in-
stead, Justice Verma said.

The Delhi government decided to increase
the supply of subsidised LPG cylinders, from
nine to 12, for 3.5 lakh poor households in
the capital.
The decision was taken at a cabinet meeting
chaired by Chief Minister Sheila Dikshit.
Delhi has always been at the forefront in
providing relief to poor and vulnerable fami-
lies, the chief minister told reporters here.
The decision came close on the heels of
central government raising the cap on subsi-
dised LPG cylinders from six to nine.
Dikshit added that her government would re-
lease Rs.15 crore to facilitate deliveries of
the three extra subsidised cylinders to the
poor.
The government would bear subsidy of
Rs.350 per cylinder to meet the difference
of cost between non-subsidised and subsi-
dised cylinders.
The extra LPG cylinders would be made
available only to those households regis-
tered under the Delhi governments spon-
sored Kerosene Free Delhi scheme.
The scheme was launched Aug 2012 under
which over 3.5 lakh below poverty line (BPL)
and poor households will be provided LPG
cylinders and cooking stoves.

The managing committee of Haryanas Man-
di Dabwali-based DAV Public School and a
marriage hall will have to pay Rs.34 crore,
along with interest, as compensation to vic-
tims of the 1995 fre tragedy in which 446
people were killed, the Supreme Court ruled
Wednesday.
An apex court bench of Justice B.S. Chau-
han and Justice K. Gopala Gowda dismissed
an appeal by the schools managing commit-
tee, thus, clearing the decks for the payment
of compensation to the victims kin.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court Nov 9,
2009, enhanced the compensation to Rs.34
crore plus six percent interest to make up
for the delay in payment of compensation to
the victims.
Dismissing the appeal by the DAV Schools
managing committee and others, Justice
Gopala Gowda said: It is open for the man-
aging committee to approach the compe-
tent civil court for apportioning the liability
of compensation out of 55 percent fastened
upon both the appellants and the respon-
dent No.8 (Rajiv Marriage Palace) by initiat-
ing appropriate proceedings.
The managing committee of DAV Public
School had challenged the Nov 9, 2009, high
court order enhancing the compensation to
Rs.34 crore along with six percent interest.
Initially, the Justice T.P. Garg Commission
that inquired into the tragedy had awarded
Rs.18 crore compensation to the victims kin.
A synthetic tent caught fre inside the build-

trapped inside that caused a stampede. As
many as 446 people, including 230 children,
perished in the tragedy.

Noted actor Kamal Haasan, expressing his
shock at the two-week ban ordered by the
Tamil Nadu government on his flm Vish-
waroopam after objections from Muslim or-
ganisations, said Thursday he would seek a
legal remedy.
In a statement Kamal Haasan said: I have
been ruthlessly used as a vehicle by small
groups who seek political profle. Icon bash-
ing is a great way to be noticed when you
are not one yourself. It is happenning again
and again. Any neutral and patriotic Muslim
will surely feel pride on seeing my flm. It
was designed for that purpose.
Now I will rely on law and logic to come to
our support. This kind of cultural terrorism
will have to stop, he added.
The flm, which deals about the adversities
of war, was majorly shot in the US and Af-
ghanistan.
I am not only hurt by these accusations of
denigrating a community but my sensibilities
are truly insulted, said Kamal who has writ-
ten, produced and directed the movie.
He said his statements in favour of the Mus-
lim community has marked him as its sym-
pathizer.
I have always gone beyond the call of my
duty as an actor to voice my opinion in fa-
vour of what was humane and civil. I have
been part of an organization called Harmony
India which worked for Hindu Muslim amity,
he added.
The state government banned Vishwaroo-
pam movie for two weeks with around 25
Muslim organisations objected to Kamals
movie on the ground that it portrays the
community in bad light.
The Tamil and Telugu versions were slated
for a Friday release, while the Hindi version,
titled Vishwaroop, is scheduled to come
out Feb 1.
When Muslim organisations had objected to
the movie, the 58-year-old organised a spe-
cial show for them to allay their fears.
However, the organisations hardened their
stance after watching the movie, alleging
that the community was shown in bad light.
Earlier, the flm got into trouble when Kamal
had announced that he will premiere it frst
on DTH and then take it to the theatres.
But when distributors objected, he had to
revise his plans. Now the Tamil and Telugu
versions will be aired on DTH a week after

The Jan 18 abduction and gang-rape of a
young woman in this Punjab town got an-
other twist. The police here said the woman
was out on bail in an attempt to murder case
after she allegedly injected a married wom-
an with HIV-infected blood last year.
The gang-rape victim, a nurse from Punjabs
Moga district and in her early 20s, was ad-
mitted to a hospital here after she alleged
that she was abducted Friday, gang-raped
for two days and then dumped on the road-
side near here Sunday.
The nurse alleged that she was also flmed
by her attackers. She was found on the
Bathinda-Dabwali road, 20 km from here,
Sunday evening, a police offcial said, add-
ing that some motorists informed them about
her.
Doctors at the civil hospital here said that
her medical examination showed that she
was sexually assaulted.
But police offcers said they were looking at
other angles in this case as the nurse her-
self was out on bail in a case of attempt to
murder registered against her and her lover,
Sunil Kumar, for allegedly injecting his wife
with HIV-infected blood in March last year.
New Delhi
India and Australia will begin negotiations on
a bilateral civil nuclear energy cooperation
pact in March.
External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid
announced this Monday at a joint media in-
teraction after talks with visiting Australian
counterpart, Bob Carr.
Australian and Indian offcials will be work-
ing to conclude the agreement which will en-
able the export of uranium from Australia to
India, said Carr.
A sense of urgency and purpose will be
there. We will move swiftly, Khurshid said.
The two sides held the eighth round of their
framework dialogue, an integral part of the
strategic partnership, here and reviewed the
entire gamut of their bilateral ties as well as
regional and global issues during their talks.
Australia, the worlds third-largest exporter
of uranium, had agreed to start negotiations
on a civil nuclear deal with India during the
visit of Prime Minister Julia Gillard to New
Delhi last October.
In December 2011, Gillards Labour Party
had overturned its long-standing ban on ex-
porting uranium to India.

The Delhi High Court disposed of a petition
seeking a Central Bureau of Investigation
(CBI) probe against some Anna Hazare sup-
porters for allegedly receiving funds illegally
from foreign organisations.
A division bench of Chief Justice D. Murug-
esan and Justice V.K. Jain disposed of the
plea after the central government submitted
that it had found lapses in foreign funding to
three NGOs linked to Anna Hazare support-
ers but there is no need for a criminal case.
The home ministry, in an affdavit, said
Navjyoti Indian Foundation and India Vision
Foundation, run by Kiran Bedi, and Kabir,
run by Manish Sisodia, had received foreign
funds but they were not used for any politi-
cal activity or the India Against Corruption
group.
Justice Jain criticised the conduct of the
counsel for remaining absent from the last
four hearings.
The affdavit of the home ministry said: In-
spections were carried out in August and
in November under Foreign Contribution
Regulation Act (FCRA) and FCR Rules and
some irregularities were found.
These are not serious enough at this stage
to warrant criminal investigation. During in-
spection, no documentary proof in records
of the association was found to show the
use of the fund in any such political activity
or in India Against Corruption (IAC) move-
ment or agitation, said the affdavit.
The affdavit said that during an inspection
at Kabir in August, it was found that some
vouchers were not supported by bills while
repairing bills of personal vehicles were
claimed from the associations accounts.
It said cash was disbursed to many people
without justifcation or records. Most of the
foreign contributions were spent on tours
without approval of the trustees and the
NGO was being run from Manish Sisodias
fat.
It was found that the India Vision Foundation
maintained 15 bank accounts including an
FCRA-designated account and frequently
withdrew foreign contributions and depos-
ited them into other accounts, said the af-
fdavit.
The government fled its affdavit on a plea
by advocate Manohar Lal Sharma alleging
that supporters of Hazare received foreign
funds for their agitation on the Lokpal Bill in
violation of the FCRA.
Sunil is still in jail while she was released on
bail. The allegation against them (Sunil and
the nurse) was that they tried to kill his wife
after she refused to give him divorce. We are
looking into all aspects, a senior police of-
fcer said here.
Police sources said the rape victim and
Sunil, who had developed relations, wanted
to get married.
Police investigators said the nurse told them
she had gone to Chandigarh, about 230 km
from here, Friday for a job in a private hos-
pital.
As she was standing near the inter-state
bus terminus (ISBT) in Sector 43, a Maruti
Swift car stopped near her and asked for
directions. The victim alleged that two men
and a woman were seated in the car and
she was pulled inside by them.
She claims that she was given an injection
and fell unconscious. When she regained
consciousness, she saw the men making
MMSes of her. She alleged that she was
gang-raped by these men for two days, a
police offcial said.
The nurse was being treated for her injuries
at the hospital.
Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which has in the
past prevented Australia from supplying it
with uranium.
The two countries discussed matters of
shared security, including support for Af-
ghanistan, maritime security in the Indian
Ocean, joint efforts to combat terrorism and
an agreement to an expanded bilateral dia-
logue on cyber policy.
India is a key part of Australias future in the
Asian Century and our interests are increas-
ingly converging, said Carr.
Australias Indian community of more than
450,000 people is our fastest growing mi-
grant community and India is our second-
largest source of international students.
We are pleased that our strategic partner-
ship has grown in strength and has expand-
ed in scope. We also recognised that there
are tremendous opportunities for much
greater cooperation and that we shall strive
to attain them, Khurshid said.
India and Australias relations are based on
shared interests and mutual beneft in politi-
cal and security areas, Khurshid said.
Indian Defence Minister A.K. Antony is to
visit Australia soon for further discussions
on cooperation in defence and security.

For reasons other than preaching
salvation and guiding the teeming
millions on faith and spirituality, the
saffron-robed seers camping in the
sprawling Kumbh mela premises
are making waves for many other
reasons too. Some are attracting
eyeballs for their fondness for com-

jewellery and even feets of luxury

And they are loving every moment of

Kutte-waale baba. The sobriquets
are given to them by their followers
for one personal streak or the other.
A fve-foot something, with a twirled

congregation - arguably the largest in
the world and expected to draw over

he has been wearing the gold stuff

Also drawing large crowds is Computer

He claims to have a computer-like

Armed with all latest gadgetry, including
a laptop, wi-f dongles and a chopper,
he has put the Mela administration in a

He had missed the inaugural Shahi

wants to jump into the holy Ganges from

to do so, he says he wanted to do it to
avoid large crowds.

Pakistani-American David Headley, a key
plotter in the deadly 2008 Mumbai terror
attack by Pakistani terror group Lashkar-e-
Taiba (LeT), dodged the life sentence as ex-
pected, with a court here Thursday sentenc-
ing him to 35 years in prison.
Headley, 52, the Washington-born son of a
Pakistani diplomat and an American mother,
faced life imprisonment without parole, but
US District Judge Harry Leinenweber gave
him a lesser sentence in line with the pros-
ecutions recommendations.
Citing the signifcant cooperation to US
governments efforts to combat terrorism
provided by Headley, US federal prosecu-
tors had sought only 30 to 35 years in prison
for him.
Before imposing the 35-year prison term,
the judge said he wanted to make sure
Headley, who had changed his given name
of Dawood Gilani to scout targets in Mumbai
without arousing suspicion, is never in a po-
sition again to commit a terrorist attack, the
Chicago Tribune reported.
Leinenweber was sceptical of a letter that
Headley recently wrote to him. I dont have
any faith in Mr. Headley when he says hes a
changed person, the judge said.
Headley should be under lock and key for
the rest of his life, Leinenweber said.
Earlier, a victim of the terror attack told the
judge how surprised she was by the young
ages of the terrorists who stormed into a
hotels frst-foor cafe while she was eating
there, the Tribune reported.
Linda Ragsdale, a Nashville woman who
was shot in the back during the 2008 ram-

innocent people.
Holding back tears, Ragsdale described a
barrage of bullets so intense that waves of
heat clouded her vision.
I know what a bullet could do to every part
of the human body, Ragsdale said.
I know the sound of life leaving a 13-year-
old child. These are things I never needed
to know, never needed to experience, she
was quoted as saying.
But former US attorney Patrick Fitzgerald,
making a surprise appearance at the sen-
tencing hearing, told Leinenweber he should
consider the unusual nature of Headleys
cooperation even though Headley was in-
volved in a very, very heinous crime.

The changing offcial narrative about the na-

Pyongyang
Two days after a UN resolution condemned
North Koreas recent rocket launch, Pyong-
yang declared it was proceeding with plans
for a third nuclear test.
North Korea has already conducted two nu-
clear tests; one in 2006 and another in 2009.
The decision for the third test was announced
Thursday by the countrys top military body,
saying the high-level nuclear test and more
long-range rocket launches were aimed at
its arch-enemy -- the US, reported Korean
Central News Agency (KCNA).
The announcement, however, did not give
any time-frame for the test.
The Koreas National Defence Commission
stated that in a new phase of the anti-US
struggle, North Korea does not hide its plans
to continue launching a variety of satellites
and long-range rockets, and carry out a
higher level nuclear test targeted at the US,
the sworn enemy of the Korean people, Xi-
nhua reported.
No dialogue on the denuclearisation of the
Korean Peninsula will be possible in future
even though there may be dialogues and ne-
gotiations on ensuring peace and security in
the region including the Korean Peninsula,
it added.
The 15-member UNSC Tuesday unanimous-
ly approved Resolution 2087, requiring North
Korea to comply with all relevant resolutions
approved by the security council and not to
use the ballistic missile technology for any
launch.
Regional neighbours and the US have urged
North Korea not to proceed, BBC reported.
We hope they dont do it, we call on them
not to do it. It will be a mistake and a missed
opportunity if they were to do it, said Glyn
Davies, the US special envoy on North Korea
policy currently visiting Seoul.
This is not a moment to increase tensions on
the Korean Peninsula.
Seoul deeply regretted the North Korean
statement and strongly urged it not to go
ahead, a South Korean foreign ministry
spokesman said.
Chinas foreign ministry, meanwhile, called on
all relevant parties to refrain from action that
might escalate the situation in the region.

Cuba has successfully performed over
5,100 kidney transplants since Feb 24,
1970, an achievement on par with that of
developed nations, an expert said.
In a 42-year period Cuban surgeons have
undertaken 4,751 kidneys transplants
with dead donors and 397 with living do-
nors, all free of charge, said Alexander
Marmol Sonora, leader of the Interna-
tional Master in Transplant Coordination
programme at the Public Health Ministry.
The living donors are close relatives, such
as parents, brothers and sons, of the pa-
tients, the only donors Cuban health min-
istry accepts for that kind of transplants.
Nine health centers in the country can
perform transplants with living donors,
fve of them in Havana, and the rest lo-
cated in Santiago de Cuba, Holguin, Ca-
maguey and Villa Clara, Marmol Sonora
added.
He said that the recently opened Centre
for Cell Engineering and Organ and Tis-
sue Transplantation will raise the quality
of the national programme of organ trans-
plants on the island.
The doctor added that international re-
searches have proved that it is four times
cheaper to do a kidney transplant than
keeping a patient in dialysis, which would
cost $20,000 a year.
He said kidney transplantation in Cuba is
totally free of costs for its citizens like the
rest of other health services in the coun-
try.
Islamabad
Pakistan Thursday confrmed that the
UN Special Rapporteur was conducting
an inquiry into human rights violations
by the US drone attacks in the countrys
tribal regions, Xinhua reported.
The exercise is part of a broader man-
date given to the Rapporteur by the UN
Human Rights Council to examine abuse
of human rights while countering ter-
rorism, a Foreign Offce spokesperson
Moazzam Ahmad Khan said Thursday at
the weekly news briefng in Islamabad.
Pakistan, along with other like-minded
countries, had called for examining the
extra-judicial and targeted killing includ-
ing through drone strikes resulting in
death of civilians and non- combatants,
he said.
The US uses drones to launch attacks in
Pakistans Waziristan tribal region, say-
ing they are meant to target the remnants
of Al-Qaeda and Taliban militants, who
are blamed for cross-border attacks in
Afghanistan.
But Pakistan and tribesmen insist that
the Americas unmanned aircraft kill in-
nocent people.
Pakistan regards drone strikes as viola-
tion of its sovereignty and territorial integ-
rity, the offcial said.
Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari would
visit Britain in the frst week of February
to attend a trilateral summit along with
British Prime Minister David Cameron
and Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai.

Souvik, an engineering under-graduate stu-
dent at the Manchester Metropolitan Uni-
versity since Sep 2012, was last seen at a
nightclub on New Year eve and went miss-
ing later under mysterious circumstances.
A pall of glom descended on the Pals house
in the northern suburb of Bangalore with his
mother being inconsolable after learning
about Souviks tragic end.

the search operation and stayed back since
then in the hope of locating his eldest son.
Souvik called his parents Dec 31 night to
wish them a happy New Year and told them
that he would be going with his friends to
celebrate the New Year at a nightclub.
We frst came to know Jan 2 that our son
was not seen in the hostel after the New
Year party. A complaint was lodged by Sou-
viks friends with police, a tearful Mahuya
had told IANS Jan 9.
Shantanu, who joined the Al Nahyan con-
struction frm in Riyadh as an engineer last
year, was in Bangalore then on a year-end
holiday.
The Pals, who hail from Midnapore in West
Bengal, have been living here since 2002
when Shantanu came to join Swedish major
ABB India energy frm as an engineer.
Barack Obama described the episode as
an act of terror the day after the deaths in
Benghazi.
She also noted the early lack of reliable in-
formation about the identity of the attackers
as well as their motives.
Theres evidence that the attacks were de-
liberate, opportunistic and pre-coordinated
but not necessarily indicative of extensive
planning, she told the Senate panel.
There were no delays in decision making,
no denials of support from Washington or
from our military in the immediate aftermath
of the assault, Clinton said.
The independent probe she ordered follow-
ing the Benghazi attack resulted in 29 rec-
ommendations that a State Department task
force has used in formulating 64 specifc
action items, the secretary said.
Eighty-fve percent (of those items) are
now on track to be completed by the end of
March, Clinton said.
The former frst lady will step down as sec-
retary of state in the coming days. Obamas
nominee to succeed her, Sen. John Kerry,
is expected to win easy confrmation in the
Senate.

The BJP parliamentary board thanked the

The parliamentary board met at the Bharati-

The parliamentary board places on record
its deep sense of appreciation of leadership
provided by Nitin Gadkari as the president
of BJP, senior party leader Ananth Kumar
read out a statement after the meeting.
Gadkaris dynamism, good work, and open

An Andhra Pradesh court dismissed another
bail petition of MIM chief and Hyderabad MP
Asaduddin Owaisi in a seven-year-old case
of rioting and manhandling an offcer.
A local court in Sangareddy town of Medak
district near Hyderabad dismissed the bail
plea of the Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen
(MIM) president, who was Monday sent to
judicial custody till Feb 2.
This was the second bail petition in as many
days to be dismissed by judicial frst class
magistrate K. Maruthi Devi.
The magistrate had Tuesday pulled up the
MP for not respecting the law. The court took
note of the fact that Owaisi never appeared
before it since 2009, though a non-bailable
warrant was pending against him.
Owaisi had Monday appeared before the
court, seeking recall of a non-bailable war-
rant pending against him in connection with
a case booked against him in 2005. The
MIM leaders lawyer moved a fresh bail peti-
tion Wednesday but this was also dismissed
by the court, which observed that bail at this
stage would further delay the court proceed-
ings.
Owaisis lawyer sought bail on the ground
that as the chief of a political party and MP,
he had many responsibilities.
He also informed the court that the MIM
leader is to preside over a public meeting
organised by the party on the occasion of
Milad-un-Nabi, the birth anniversary of
Prophet Mohammed. The court was told that
some foreign speakers were also invited for
the meeting.
A court in Nirmal town had Wednesday ex-
tended till Feb 5 the judicial custody of Ak-
baruddin, who is lodged in a jail in Adilabad
town, about 300 km from here.
Akbaruddin Owaisi, who was arrested Jan
8 for the hate speech he delivered at Nirmal
last month, has been charged with sedition,
waging war against the nation and promot-
ing enmity between different groups.
In another setback to the MIM legislator, po-
lice in Karimnagar registered a case against
him for allegedly making a provocative
speech in the town on Aug 22 last year. The
case was booked on court orders on a peti-
tion by a local leader of the Bharatiya Janata

The Andhra Pradesh High Court rejected
YSR Congress Party leader Y.S. Jaganmo-
han Reddys bail petition in an illegal assets
case.
The court, which had reserved its orders two
days ago, said the petition was not maintain-
able in the light of directions given by the Su-
preme Court earlier.
Justice B. Seshasayana Reddy also refused
to give any directions to the Central Bureau
of Investigation (CBI) to fx any time-frame
for completing the investigations, saying the
court could not interfere in the matter.
The Kadapa MPs lawyer had argued that
he was entitled for bail as the CBI failed
to complete the investigations and fle the
chargesheet in all seven aspects of the case
despite directions by the Supreme Court.
The CBI counsel, however, told the court
that the investigating agency needed more
time to complete the investigations.
While dismissing Jagans bail plea in Octo-
ber, the Supreme Court had observed that
the petitioner could renew his bail before the
trial court on completion of the investigation
by the CBI in seven aspects.
The high court on Dec 24 had dismissed the
statutory bail petition of Jagan, as the YSR
Congress chief is known. Earlier, the CBI
court had dismissed both the statutory and
regular bail petitions.
Jagan, who was arrested on May 27 by the
CBI, is presently lodged at the Chanchalgu-

Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati
Thursday slammed Home Minister Sush-

Mayawati told reporters here that Shinde
holds an important position in the govern-
ment and had made the statement in haste.
She said Hindus were agitated and angry
following the statement, and added that if
Shinde had facts, he should have presented
those before courts and allowed them to
take a decision.
Several terrorism-related cases are pend-
ing before courts across the country...It

The CPI-M Thursday accused the Trinamool
Congress government in West Bengal of not
taking necessary actions at the ground level
against chit funds for duping depositors.
The erstwhile Left Front government had ar-
rested more than 50 people in connection with
chit funds after getting complaints and set up
a special agency to check the mushrooming of
such frms, but the current dispensation might
be lacking those actions, Communist Party
of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader and former f-
nance minister Asim Dasgupta said here.
During our rule we had arrested many people
for duping depositors. We also constituted a
special agency with top police offcials to curb
proliferation of the chit funds. But this govern-
ment is not taking such actions at the ground
level, Dasgupta told reporters.
Earlier, the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) said it
had already warned all the state governments,
including the West Bengal government, about
the mushrooming of chit funds and also writ-
ten to them to take appropriate actions against
them.
The Calcutta Stock Exchange (CSE) a couple
of days ago also expressed concern over the
issue and said the impact of chit funds in Ben-
gal would be huge as the number of such frms
in the state was very high.

The BJP government in Karnataka faced a
serious threat of survival as two ministers
quit the cabinet and 13 party legislators, in-
cluding the two ministers, announced they
will resign from the assembly too.
Public Works Minister C.M. Udasi and Ener-
gy Minister Shobha Karandlaje, loyalists of
former BJP leader B.S. Yeddyurappa, sub-
mitted their resignations to Chief Minister
Jagadish Shettar here.
Shettar told reporters, before leaving for a
two-day tour of north Karnataka, that he had
received the resignation letters and would
take a decision after considering them.
Udasi, Karandlaje and 11 other legislators,
however, could not submit their resignation
from the assembly as Speaker K.G. Bopaiah
was out of Bangalore.
The absence of the speaker led to high dra-
ma in his chamber as Udasi, Karandlaje and
other legislators waited for him for about an
hour.
The legislators were upset that Bopaiah was
not present even though he had been in-
formed about our coming to meet him today

speakers chamber.
Yeddyurappa, who came to the speakers of-
fce after learning about the drama, lambast-
soon, Parrikar told reporters during his gov-
ernments reach-out campaign that started
last week.
Parrikar added that those named in the il-
legal mining scam would be penalised soon.
The BJP, during its stint in the opposition
had openly named several top Congress
offcials, claiming they were party to a
Rs.25,000-crore illegal mining scam.
Parrikar also warned of tough action against
those found involved in illegal mining in Goa.
All the people will be taken to task if there is
clear evidence against them. No one will be
spared. But that doesnt mean there would
be arrests just like that. We will produce doc-
umentary evidence and chargesheet them,
then let the courts decide, Parrikar said.
Mining in Goa has been banned by the Su-
preme Court of India, which is hearing a
public interest litigation on illegal mining in

ed Shettar, Bopaiah and the ruling Bharatiya

This is a shameless government. The
speaker is not present even though he had
been informed. He should be brought back
within 24 hours, he said.
He also demanded that Shettar return to
Bangalore immediately and quit as he had
lost majority.
Yeddyurappa appealed to people to gh-
erao (lay siege to) Shettar to force him to
return to Bangalore.
Udasi, Karandlaje and other 11 legislators
met Governor H.R. Bhardwaj and briefed
him about the speaker not being present to
receive their resignation letters even though
he had been informed about it.
We gave copies of our resignation letters to
the governor and briefed him about the de-
velopments. We requested him to take ac-
tion according to constitutional provisions,
Udasi told reporters outside Raj Bhavan
(governors offcial residence).
The governor has assured us that he would
act as per the constitution, Udasi said.
Earlier, Bhardwaj, who returned to Banga-
lore Wednesday from New Delhi, told re-
porters that he had no role to play in the un-
folding drama but would act to prevent any
constitutional crisis.
Udasi and the legislators who are quitting
the assembly will join the Karnataka Jana-
ta Party (KJP) headed by Yeddyurappa to
strengthen it ahead of the assembly elec-
tions due in May.
Yeddyurappa, the BJPs frst chief minister

The 300-sq feet tenement in which the family
lives is in a congested, noisy neighbourhood.
Speaking to the hordes of media-persons
thronging the family home the past couple of
days, Prema acknowledged that her father
Jayakumar Perumals income was around
Rs.15,000 per month, barely suffcient to
sustain the family. Perumal hails from Tamil
Nadu.
Premas mother Lingammal also worked in
a small private company to supplement the
household income for some years.
But, my parents never restrained us from
studies because of monetary issues. My
mother stopped working when we (the
brother-sister duo) started doing our
articleship (CA internship) and earned
around Rs.12,000 per month, Prema said,
holding Lingammals hand as her eyes
moistened.
Now, I want my father to take rest. He
really deserves it, Prema declared, adding
that she and her brother planned to take
up jobs soon and take over the familys
responsibilities.
Prema is no stranger to academic
achievements and accolades, which started
coming her way early in her academic life.
At her school and later the Nagindas
Khandwala College, Malad, she was granted
nominal scholarships which helped cover
her educational expenses.
Later, at the CA coaching institute, she got
a scholarship of Rs.40,000, solving the
familys acute fnancial problem.
On the other hand, Dhanraj chose not to
burden his elder sister and worked in a call
centre to supplement his income, which
went towards his educational expenses.
Prema proved her worth for every
scholarship and in 2008 stood second in the
B.Com. examinations of the University of
Mumbai, followed by a good performance in
her post-graduation.
In November 2012, the duo appeared for
the CA fnals. While Prema created history,
younger brother Dhanraj guided throughout
by her also cleared the tough exams at the
frst attempt, making their parents proud.

Well, i would love to arrange a big event
on this day where in lots of students can

We hangout everyday with our
friends for no reason, celebrates
our friends birthdays anyhow,

I would prefer a community lunch

could be, a tri colored sandwiches,
or a tri colored pulao.

I would like to celebrate republic
day by going to a college trip or a
visit to a national monument like
India Gate in Delhi, Gandhi Sama-

Mumbai, Jhalia walla bagh in Am-

monuments have special lighting at
night of republic day.

As on 26th Jan, 1950, the constitu-

ultimately vested in our hands and
the constitution was made by the

each and everyone to be aware
about it, specially kids so as they
should respect and take care and

CHANDIGARH
SUNDAY 27 Jan 2013
The White Houses offcial transcript of Pres-
ident Obamas inaugural address, Jan. 21,
2013, timed at 15 minutes:
Vice President Biden, Mr. Chief Justice,
members of the United States Congress,
distinguished guests, and fellow citizens:
Each time we gather to inaugurate a Presi-
dent we bear witness to the enduring strength
of our Constitution. We affrm the promise of
our democracy. We recall that what binds
this nation together is not the colors of our
skin or the tenets of our faith or the origins
of our names. What makes us exceptional --
what makes us American -- is our allegiance
to an idea articulated in a declaration made
more than two centuries ago:
We hold these truths to be self-evident, that
all men are created equal; that they are en-
dowed by their Creator with certain unalien-
able rights; that among these are life, liberty,
and the pursuit of happiness.
Today we continue a never-ending journey
to bridge the meaning of those words with
the realities of our time. For history tells us
that while these truths may be self-evident,
theyve never been self-executing; that
while freedom is a gift from God, it must be
secured by His people here on Earth. (Ap-
plause.) The patriots of 1776 did not fght to
replace the tyranny of a king with the privi-
leges of a few or the rule of a mob. They
gave to us a republic, a government of, and
by, and for the people, entrusting each gen-
eration to keep safe our founding creed.
And for more than two hundred years, we
have.
Through blood drawn by lash and blood
drawn by sword, we learned that no union
founded on the principles of liberty and
equality could survive half-slave and half-
free. We made ourselves anew, and vowed
to move forward together.
Together, we determined that a modern
economy requires railroads and highways
to speed travel and commerce, schools and
colleges to train our workers.
Together, we discovered that a free market
only thrives when there are rules to ensure
competition and fair play.
Together, we resolved that a great nation
must care for the vulnerable, and protect its
people from lifes worst hazards and misfor-
tune.
Through it all, we have never relinquished
our skepticism of central authority, nor have
we succumbed to the fction that all societys
ills can be cured through government alone.
Our celebration of initiative and enterprise,
our insistence on hard work and personal
responsibility, these are constants in our
character.
But we have always understood that when
times change, so must we; that fdelity to our
founding principles requires new responses
to new challenges; that preserving our indi-
vidual freedoms ultimately requires collec-
tive action. For the American people can no
more meet the demands of todays world by
acting alone than American soldiers could
have met the forces of fascism or commu-
nism with muskets and militias. No single
person can train all the math and science
teachers well need to equip our children for
the future, or build the roads and networks
and research labs that will bring new jobs
and businesses to our shores. Now, more
than ever, we must do these things together,
as one nation and one people. (Applause.)
This generation of Americans has been
tested by crises that steeled our resolve
and proved our resilience. A decade of war
is now ending. (Applause.) An economic
recovery has begun. (Applause.) Americas
possibilities are limitless, for we possess all
the qualities that this world without boundar-
ies demands: youth and drive; diversity and
openness; an endless capacity for risk and
a gift for reinvention. My fellow Americans,
we are made for this moment, and we will
seize it -- so long as we seize it together.
(Applause.)
For we, the people, understand that our
country cannot succeed when a shrinking
few do very well and a growing many barely
make it. (Applause.) We believe that Amer-
icas prosperity must rest upon the broad
shoulders of a rising middle class. We know
that America thrives when every person can
fnd independence and pride in their work;
when the wages of honest labor liberate
families from the brink of hardship. We are
true to our creed when a little girl born into
the bleakest poverty knows that she has the
same chance to succeed as anybody else,
because she is an American; she is free,
and she is equal, not just in the eyes of God
but also in our own. (Applause.)
We understand that outworn programs are
inadequate to the needs of our time. So
we must harness new ideas and technol-
ogy to remake our government, revamp our
tax code, reform our schools, and empow-
er our citizens with the skills they need to
work harder, learn more, reach higher. But
while the means will change, our purpose
endures: a nation that rewards the effort
and determination of every single American.
That is what this moment requires. That is
what will give real meaning to our creed.
We, the people, still believe that every citi-
zen deserves a basic measure of security
and dignity. We must make the hard choices
to reduce the cost of health care and the
size of our defcit. But we reject the belief
that America must choose between caring
for the generation that built this country and
investing in the generation that will build its
future. (Applause.) For we remember the
lessons of our past, when twilight years
were spent in poverty and parents of a child
with a disability had nowhere to turn.
We do not believe that in this country free-
dom is reserved for the lucky, or happiness
for the few. We recognize that no matter how
responsibly we live our lives, any one of us
at any time may face a job loss, or a sudden
illness, or a home swept away in a terrible
storm. The commitments we make to each
other through Medicare and Medicaid and
Social Security, these things do not sap our
initiative, they strengthen us. (Applause.)
They do not make us a nation of takers; they
free us to take the risks that make this coun-
try great. (Applause.)
We, the people, still believe that our obliga-
tions as Americans are not just to ourselves,
but to all posterity. We will respond to the
threat of climate change, knowing that the
failure to do so would betray our children
and future generations. (Applause.) Some
may still deny the overwhelming judgment of
science, but none can avoid the devastating
impact of raging fres and crippling drought
and more powerful storms.
The path towards sustainable energy sourc-
es will be long and sometimes diffcult. But
America cannot resist this transition, we
must lead it. We cannot cede to other na-
tions the technology that will power new
jobs and new industries, we must claim its
promise. Thats how we will maintain our
economic vitality and our national treasure
-- our forests and waterways, our crop lands
and snow-capped peaks. That is how we will
preserve our planet, commanded to our care
by God. Thats what will lend meaning to the
creed our fathers once declared.
We, the people, still believe that enduring
security and lasting peace do not require
perpetual war. (Applause.) Our brave men
and women in uniform, tempered by the
fames of battle, are unmatched in skill and
courage. (Applause.) Our citizens, seared
by the memory of those we have lost, know
too well the price that is paid for liberty. The
knowledge of their sacrifce will keep us for-
ever vigilant against those who would do us
harm. But we are also heirs to those who
won the peace and not just the war; who
turned sworn enemies into the surest of
friends -- and we must carry those lessons
into this time as well.
We will defend our people and uphold our
values through strength of arms and rule
of law. We will show the courage to try and
resolve our differences with other nations
peacefully - not because we are nave
about the dangers we face, but because
engagement can more durably lift suspicion
and fear. (Applause.)
America will remain the anchor of strong al-
liances in every corner of the globe. And we
will renew those institutions that extend our
capacity to manage crisis abroad, for no one
has a greater stake in a peaceful world than
its most powerful nation. We will support de-
mocracy from Asia to Africa, from the Ameri-
cas to the Middle East, because our inter-
ests and our conscience compel us to act on
behalf of those who long for freedom. And
we must be a source of hope to the poor, the
sick, the marginalized, the victims of preju-
dice - not out of mere charity, but because
peace in our time requires the constant ad-
vance of those principles that our common
creed describes: tolerance and opportunity,
human dignity and justice.
We, the people, declare today that the most
evident of truths - that all of us are created
equal - is the star that guides us still; just
as it guided our forebears through Seneca
Falls, and Selma, and Stonewall; just as it
guided all those men and women, sung and
unsung, who left footprints along this great
Mall, to hear a preacher say that we can-
not walk alone; to hear a King proclaim that
our individual freedom is inextricably bound
to the freedom of every soul on Earth. (Ap-
plause.)
It is now our generations task to carry on
what those pioneers began. For our journey
is not complete until our wives, our moth-
ers and daughters can earn a living equal to
their efforts. (Applause.) Our journey is not
complete until our gay brothers and sisters
are treated like anyone else under the law
- (applause) -- for if we are truly created
equal, then surely the love we commit to one
another must be equal as well. (Applause.)
Our journey is not complete until no citizen
is forced to wait for hours to exercise the
right to vote. (Applause.) Our journey is not
complete until we fnd a better way to wel-
come the striving, hopeful immigrants who
still see America as a land of opportunity
-- (applause) -- until bright young students
and engineers are enlisted in our workforce
rather than expelled from our country. (Ap-
plause.) Our journey is not complete until
all our children, from the streets of Detroit to
the hills of Appalachia, to the quiet lanes of
Newtown, know that they are cared for and
cherished and always safe from harm.
That is our generations task -- to make these
words, these rights, these values of life and
liberty and the pursuit of happiness real for
every American. Being true to our founding
documents does not require us to agree on
every contour of life. It does not mean we
all defne liberty in exactly the same way or
follow the same precise path to happiness.
Progress does not compel us to settle cen-
turies-long debates about the role of govern-
ment for all time, but it does require us to act
in our time. (Applause.)
For now decisions are upon us and we can-
not afford delay. We cannot mistake absolut-
ism for principle, or substitute spectacle for
politics, or treat name-calling as reasoned
debate. (Applause.) We must act, knowing
that our work will be imperfect. We must act,
knowing that todays victories will be only
partial and that it will be up to those who
stand here in four years and 40 years and
400 years hence to advance the timeless
spirit once conferred to us in a spare Phila-
delphia hall.
My fellow Americans, the oath I have sworn
before you today, like the one recited by oth-
ers who serve in this Capitol, was an oath to
God and country, not party or faction. And
we must faithfully execute that pledge dur-
ing the duration of our service. But the words
I spoke today are not so different from the
oath that is taken each time a soldier signs
up for duty or an immigrant realizes her
dream. My oath is not so different from the
pledge we all make to the fag that waves
above and that flls our hearts with pride.
They are the words of citizens and they
represent our greatest hope. You and I, as
citizens, have the power to set this countrys
course. You and I, as citizens, have the ob-
ligation to shape the debates of our time --
not only with the votes we cast, but with the
voices we lift in defense of our most ancient
values and enduring ideals. (Applause.)
Let us, each of us, now embrace with sol-
emn duty and awesome joy what is our last-
ing birthright. With common effort and com-
mon purpose, with passion and dedication,
let us answer the call of history and carry
into an uncertain future that precious light of
freedom.
Thank you. God bless you, and may He for-
ever bless these United States of America.
(Applause.)

SUNDAY 27 Jan 2013
Former Uttar Pradesh chief minister Rajnath
Singhs unanimous election as the BJP pres-
ident from 2013 to 2015 was announced by
Thawarchand Gehlot, who was the returning
offcer for the partys presidential election.
Earlier Wednesday, the partys parliamen-
tary board met in the morning and approved
Rajnath Singhs candidature for the top party
post.
Rajnath Singh emerged as the presiden-
tial candidate Tuesday following the BJPs
desire to insulate itself from allegations of
fnancial wrongdoing faced by incumbent Ni-
tin Gadkari over investments in Purti Group
linked to him.
Till Tuesday afternoon, it looked almost cer-
tain that Gadkari would get another term but
an income tax survey of shell companies
linked to Purti group Tuesday sealed his fate.
Senior BJP leader L.K. Advani, who had
reservations about giving Gadkari a second
term, told gthe newly-elected Rajnath Singh
that his big responsibility would be to ensure
that there should be no compromise with
anything thats not moral.
He also said the new BJP chief had to en-
sure that the party continues to be party with
a difference.
Rajnath Singhs reappointment as the BJP
chief has coincided with Rahul Gandhi taking
over as the vice-president of the Congress.
It also coincided with the BJP government
in Karnataka facing a serious threat of sur-
vival as two ministers quit the cabinet and
they with 11 other party legislators said they
would quit from the assembly too.
Rajnath Singh, 61, said the party will come
true to the expectations of people and win
the forthcoming elections in the states and
to parliament.
We will form the government in 2014, he
said.
Rajnath Singh attacked the Congress for ills
of the country and said he was assuming his
duties with a sense of responsibility.
He announced thhat the BJP will hold coun-
trywide protests Thursday against Home
Minister Sushilkumar Shindes Hindu terror
remarks.
Rajnath Singh also defended Gadkari, say-
ing the allegations against him were
The BJP kept up its demand for the sack-
ing of Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde
over his Hindu terror remarks, threaten-
ing to disrupt parliaments budget session
till the government is forced to drop him.
The ruling Congress dismissed the protests
as aimed to defect attention from BJPs own
problems.
Speaking at a rally here as part of its pro-
tests against Shindes remarks, Bharatiya
Janata Partys (BJP) new president Rajnath
Singh and Leader of Opposition in the Lok
Sabha Sushma Swaraj demanded that the
Congress leaders should apologise over
Shindes remarks.
The BJP will fght the issue in both houses
of parliament,
said Rajnath
Singh, alleging
that the prime
minister will not
have the guts to
sack Shinde till
Congress chief
Sonia Gandhi
speaks on the issue.
What is your (Gandhi) view on Shindes re-
marks? If you do not give directions to Man-
mohanji that Shindeji should be sacked, I
want to tell you, we will create a situation in
both houses of parliament that Manmohanji
will be forced to sack Shindeji. No power on
earth will be able to stop it, said the newly-
installed BJP chief.
The budget session of parliament is expect-
ed to begin in the second half of February.
He (Shinde) has raised such a big question
on the countrys prestige, even then there is
silence. No power will be able to save him
(from sacking), the BJP will create such a
situation in the country, said Rajnath Singh.
Till the time an apology comes on (Shindes)
statement, our agitation will continue, Su-
shma Swaraj said.
You have hurt national interest at a time
when Pakistan is coming and beheading
our soldiers. You are not attacking Pakistan
but attacking the main opposition party, she
claimed.
What do you want to tell the world? There
might be terror camps in Pakistan, but here
the main opposition party runs a terror camp!
Do you want to say, terrorists are sitting in
parliament? The leader of opposition in the
Lok Sabha is heading a terror organisation?
she asked.
Sushma Swaraj accused the Congress of
double speak on Shindes remarks, and
said one of its general secretaries had jus-
tifed Shindes remarks and another had
sought to distance the party from them.
Shinde had referred to Hindu terrorism and
saffron terrorism during the Congress con-
clave in Jaipur.
Whether it is BJP or RSS (Rashtriya Sway-
amsevak Sangh), their training camps are
promoting Hindu terrorism, he had said.
Congress spokesperson Renuka Chowd-
hury termed the BJPs nationwide agitation
as an attempt to defect public attention from
its problems.
Why is the BJP threatening to agitate over
(Shindes) remark? They are doing this to
defect peoples attention from their in-house
problems and misguide them, she told re-
porters here.
Minister of State in the Prime Ministers Of-
fce V. Narayanasamy termed the protests
by the BJP as unwarranted.
People who were arrested in the Malegaon
incident and the Samjhauta Express blast
were found to be members of some of the
Hindu fundamentalist groups and it was in
that context the home minister said this. I
dont see any kind of objection to any part of
his statement, Narayanasamy told report-
ers.
Terrorism is terrorism; whether Hindu fun-
damentalism or Muslim fundamentalism, it is
condemnable, he said.
baseless.
The circumstances in which I accept this
responsibility are not happy for us. Gadkari
is one of our workers on whose character
questions cannot be raised. We wanted him
to continue. We amended the constitution for
it. But the way he was attacked by baseless
allegations, he was hurt and resigned, he
said.
The entire party stands with him. I am not
accepting this as a post but as a responsibil-
ity, Rajnath Singh added.
Rajnath Singhs mettle will be frst tested in
Karnataka, which is slated for elections in a
few months. In Karnataka, the party faces
challenges not only from the Congress but
from its own former chief minister B.S. Yed-
dyurappa.
There are a series of elections this year,
including in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattis-
garh, ruled by the BJP, followed by the Lok
Sabha polls in 2014. With the Congress
campaign expected to be led by Rahul Gan-
dhi, the BJP will have to evolve an effective
strategy to attract youth, the middle class
and the poor.
Rajnath Singh will also have to deal with the
tricky issue of the partys prime ministerial
candidate in view of ambitious senior lead-
ers and issues linked to the rise of regional
satraps.
Though Rajnath Singh served as chief
minister of Uttar Pradesh from Oct 2000 to
March 2002, he has won only two elections:
a by-poll for the Haidergarh assembly seat
in Barabanki when he was elected the chief
minister, and second when he won the Gha-
ziabad parliamentary seat in 2009.
There are also apprehensions that he does
not have a pan-national appeal.
Rajnath Singh frst became party president
in 2005 following L.K. Advanis resignation.
He was re-elected Nov 2006 and was suc-
ceeded by Gadkari in 2009 after the partys
defeat in the Lok Sabha polls that year.
The BJP had been in convulsions over giving
Gadkari a second term. Party MP Yashwant
Sinha Tuesday signalled his intention to con-
test the poll.
Gadkari said he voluntarily backed out from
going for a second term as he wanted his
name cleared of the allegations.
Thousands of BJP activists and supporters
danced to drum beats, burst frecrackers and
shouted slogans to mark Rajnath Singhs re-
appointment as the party chief.

challenges as BJP chief

Testing times ahead for Rahul
Want to reduce negative politics:
Rahul tells party leaders
We need a complete transformation
in the system
A special Congress session over the week-
end formally launched Rahul Gandhi as
the offcial number two after party chief So-
nia Gandhi, making him the presumptive
prime ministerial candidate of the party for
the 2014 general elections, but the battle
is half won and testing times lie ahead for
the 42-year-old ffth generation leader of the
Nehru-Gandhi family.
The Jaipur Declaration, that emerged from
the three-day Jan 18-20 introspection cum
strategy session Chintan Shivir appeared to
have lost signifcance once Rahul was made
the vice president, converting his de facto
status into de jure one.
But the road ahead is paved with umpteen
obstacles and uneasy will lie the head that
is likely to wear the crown of thorns, that
Gandhi alluded to when he talked about the
poison that came with such heavy politi-
cal responsibility and the personal risks that
come with it. And his mother, who came to
his room and cried on Saturday night, under-
stood it better than anyone else.

Newly-appointed Congress vice president
Rahul Gandhi Wednesday said he wanted
to try and reduce the negative politics and
get into positive politics, which would take
the country forward.
Addressing party leaders at the 24, Akbar
Road party offce here, Gandhi said he want-
ed to make the Congress party accessible
to as many people... this is my sentiment.
He said political discussions tended to be
extremely acrimonious, fghting with each

A complete overhaul of the system is need-
ed as young and impatient India now de-
mands a greater role in decision making,
newly-appointed Congress vice president
Rahul Gandhi said Sunday in an impas-
sioned speech outlining the need for his
127-year-old party to develop leadership
and give prominence to grassroots workers.
Gandhi, 42, in his frst speech after being
made the party number two, also asked the
party to respect the youths demand for a
greater role in decision-making.
We dont need better systems, we need a
complete transformation in the system, we
need 40-50 leaders at the national level
(anyone of whom can be prime minister) and
seven to 10 at the state level (for chief min-
ister), Rahul Gandhi said while addressing
over 1,200 delegates at the All India Con-
gress Committee session here.
Gandhi, who heads the partys coordination
panel, is expected to lead the party in the
2014 general elections.
The job of the Congress is to create lead-
ers for the country, he said adding that no
other party has so much depth.
But Gandhi also said there was no need to
rush with change, which, he said, has to be
backed by careful thought.
Gandhi, who was Saturday named the Con-
gress vice president, making him offcially
the number two in the party after his mother
and Congress chief Sonia Gandhi, said his
new responsibility was a big one and told
party workers that he will treat all of them
equally, will learn from their experiences but
politics, want to get into positive politics as
that is what will take the country forward.
We are a dynamic country and this coun-
try can do wonders... Lately I feel a lot of
the discussion is negative... there is a lot of
positive things happening everyday... Many
youngsters are transforming things.

ta Party, and four in the northeast - will test

The return of the third edition of the Con-
gress-led United Progressive Alliance in
2014 will also depend on how the Amethi
lawmaker is able to restructure and re-en-
ergise the party for the big political fght. He
heads the partys coordination panel for the
2014 polls.
Rahul Gandhi is also expected to restructure
the organisation and give key roles to young-
er leaders so the party is able to reach out
to the voters, 70 percent of whom are below
the age of 35. Reaching out to the youths of
the country, who are angry over corruption
in the system and other social issues, crave
for better systems of governnance and want
accountability from the politicians and the
government, will be a major task for the new
Congress vice president.
The Nehru-Gandhi family scion would also
be expected to spell out his position on vari-
ous national issues clearly as he now holds
an offcial post in the Congress.
While any success in the elections will bring
him credit, he would also have to accept the
blame in case of a failure.
Rahul Gandhi faces enormous challenges
during the coming polls as his leadership
skills would be tested, Zoya Hasan, who
teaches political science at the Jawaharlal
Nehru University, told IANS.
His speech after being made vice president
pointed out many wrongs in the party. Now
he has to set things right, she said.
The move to make him vice president, which
marks a generational shift in the 127-year-
old party, is signifcant and has mentally pre-
pared the senior leaders to accept Rahul as
their leader.
Party insiders said the decision was getting
postponed for a while due to reservations
among some senior leaders on giving him
the offcial number two position in the grand
old party.
But the members of the Youth Congress
and National Students Union of India and
the younger leaders in the party - who com-
prised a third of the 350-odd delegates at
the session - made strong demands for his
elevation, keeping in mind that 70 percent of
the voters in the country are under 35 years
of age.
Over 50 senior leaders who shared the dais
with Sonia Gandhi and Prime Minister Man-
mohan Singh at the session, not only heard
Rahul with rapt attention, but stood up as
soon as he fnished his speech and were
seen competing with one another in con-
gratulating him.
Rahul had arrived.
In an impassioned speech, Rahul made it
clear that he does not hanker for power and
stressed the need to transform the partys
systems and develop new leaders at all lev-
els while saying the youths must be involved
in decision making.
Rahul struck an emotional chord when he
related how his mother and Congress presi-
dent Sonia Gandhi cried when she met him
after he was made the vice president and
moved many leaders to tears.
The question now is whether he will be able
to bring the middle class, especially the rest-
less and impatient young, to the Congress
camp from which they stood quite alienated
over perceptions of corruption, misgover-
nance, infation and insensitivity to issues
that concern them.
will only play a judge.
It is a big responsibility. I will work for every-
body from today but I will play the judge and
not the lawyer, he said.
According to him, the time has come to
question the centralised, unaccountable
system and decision making must shift from
Delhi to the panchayats.
Gandhi said there is a young and impatient
India which is now demanding greater role
in decision making.
Why do a handful of people control the en-
tire political space, he asked, adding that
people with little understanding were sitting
at high positions.
He said the youth was angry and feeling
alienated with the existing system.
Until we start to respect and empower peo-
ple, we cannot change anything in this coun-
try... all are closed systems, designed for
mediocrity, mediocrity dominates, he said.
Hinting at things to come, he also said that
action will be taken against party deserters
who become election rivals or fght as Inde-
pendents.
Noting that one cannot achieve anything
without hope, he said we should not chase
power, we should use power to empower
people.
Gandhi struck an emotional chord when he
related how his mother and the Congress
president had cried when she met him Sat-
urday night.
Last night, everyone congratulated me and
hugged me. But last night, my mother came
to my room and she sat near me and cried.

Actor Daniel Radcliffe, who plays late beat
poet Allen Ginsberg in his new flm Kill Your
Darlings, says flming gay sex scenes for
the movie was something new.
The flm premiered Friday at Sundance Film
Festival.
In the flm, he meets fellow writers William
Burroughs (played by Ben Foster) and Jack
Kerouac (Jack Houston) at college following
a murder.
Radcliffe said he didnt have time to dwell on
nerves when flming intimate scenes as part
of his portrayal of the gay writer.
It was something new. But you know what,
we shot that whole scene in maybe an hour
and a half so it was incredibly fast-paced. I
didnt really have time to stop to think and
worry about it, he told eonline.com.
Director John Krokidas was very helpful in
furnishing me with a lot of graphic detail of
what I would be experiencing at the various
stages, he added.
The 23-year-old said it helped that Krokidas
selected a friend for the role of the sailor,
who sleeps with Ginsberg.
We were able to hang out a little bit on set
and get to know each other a little bit, which I
think is important when youre doing a scene
so intimate. You have to feel like youre both
in it together, he said.
New Delhi,
Actress Kangna Ranaut, known for her curly
locks, is all set for her frst ad for Bajaj Al-
mond Drops Hair Oil.
If the 25-year-old liked to get into the skin of
the characters in her movies like Woh Lam-
he and Tanu Weds Manu, she also enjoys
experimenting with her hair.
The style diva believes in eating right and
exercising right too.
She made her debut in 2006 with Gangster
- A Love Story and won National Award for
best supporting actress for her performance
as a troubled model in 2008 release Fash-
ion.
Her big releases this year are Hrithik
Roshan starrer Krissh 3 and Sanjay Gup-
tas Shootout at Wadala.

The Hindi word pareshaan, which in Eng-
lish means troubled, may not to be every-
bodys favourite word, but playback singer
Shalmali Kholgade says its ironical but the
word has spelled happiness for her.
Pareshaan from the flm Ishaqzaade
was Shalmalis the debut Hindi song, which
has music by Amit Trivedi. She has won the
Filmfare and the Screen Award for best fe-
male playback singer for the song.
I have sensed the irony of it every single
day since Pareshaan released, but to be a
part of it, and then garnering the kind of au-
dience response that it did, makes me very
happy, Shalmali told IANS.
The awards Ive won for the song is the ul-
timate reward. Its the cherry on the already
delicious cake, she added.
This is my frst year in the award season and
I am conscious of the fact that after the buzz
of winning these awards dies out, therell be
higher expectations, tighter schedules and
longer days in store, but I look forward to it
all, she said.

Britains Prince Harry, whose brother Wil-
liam and sister-in-law Duchess Catherine
are expecting their frst child in July, says he
is thrilled about the latest addition to the Brit-
ish royal family.
Obviously, I am thrilled for both of them. Its
about time. I spoke to my brother and her,
and they are both very well and both very
happy obviously, femalefrst.co.uk.
He also hopes the couple will be allowed to
enjoy impending parenthood in private.
I am very happy for them, but I just only
hope that they, but mainly Catherine, gets
the necessary protection to allow her as a
mother-to-be to enjoy the privacy that comes
with. I seriously hope thats going to be able
to happen, he said.
While William is happily settled as a hus-
band and father-to-be, Harry isnt planning
to rush down the aisle just yet.
I dont think you can ever be urged to settle
down. If you fnd the right person and ev-
erything feels right, then it takes time, espe-
cially for myself and my brother.
You aint ever going to fnd someone, whos
going to jump into the position that it would
hold. Simple as that, said the 28-year-old.

Disney channels popular show The Suite
Life of Karan and Kabir is set to return with
the second season.
The show follows shenanigans and pranks
of the mischievous duo - Karan and Kabir,
who live in a luxurious suite at the swanky
Raj Mahal Hotel with their mother, Priti
Jaiswal.
The success of the frst season of The
Suite Life of Karan and Kabir reaffrms the
deep emotional connections that Disney
Channel has with kids and their families. De-
livering our promise to bring alive locally rel-
evant stories and characters, we are thrilled
to bring back the two adorable boys, their
friends and family that our viewers have
come to love, Devika Prabhu, director, pro-
gramming, Kids Network, Disney UTV, said
in a statement.
This season will be even more exciting for
kids and adults alike with twice the number
of pranks and double the adventure, Prab-
hu added.
The show features Siddharth Thakkar as
Karan, Namit Shah as Kabir, Shruti Seth as
the twins mother Priti Jaiswal. It goes on air
Sunday.
The Suite Life of Karan and Kabir is the
Indian version of Emmy-nominated popular
US show The Suite Life of Zack & Cody.

Singer Taylor Swift has reportedly started to
get annoyed with the joke about her love life.
The 23-year-old, who recently broke up with
Harry Styles, has been mocked on comedy
shows for being in short lived relationships,
reports radaronline.com.
At frst Taylor just thought it was funny how
much interest people had in her love life and
she went along with it, a source said.
But now shes the butt of jokes on Saturday
Night Live (comedy show), in the tabloids
and on the late night shows. She laughed
it off, but the jokes made about her at the
Golden Globes got under her skin, the
source added.
Swift has dated celebrities like Joe Jonas,
Taylor Launter, Jake Gyllenhaal and Conor
Kennedy in the past.

Honey Singh, who courted controversies for
his songs allegedly based on sexual themes,
makes his debut as a leading man in Punjabi
flm Main Tera Bai Tu Mera Bai. He will dis-
play his comic skills alongside Punjabi star
Amrinder Gill in the movie and says it is just
one-off project.
Speaking about what he calls his reluctant
role as an actor, Honey Singh said: Frankly,
I dont think Im ready to get into acting as
yet. I still have a long way to go as a musi-
cian.
Honey Singh had done a cameo in another
Punjabi flm Mirza. And when this director-
friend of mine, Amit Prasher, offered me the
lead in a comedy about two brothers, I re-
fused. But he was hurt. He said, Tu doosre
ki picture kar sakta, mera nahin? I had to
say yes, he added.
Honey had a ball romancing the burlesque.
It was fun doing the flm. Its out-and-out
comedy about two brothers from Canada
and their adventures in Punjab. But theres
also an underlying message about Indian
values and family ties. Hanste-hanste flm
bahot kuch keh jaata hai (the flm has some-
thing serious to say amidst the laughter).
Honey wont be accepting acting offers for
now even if Main Tera Bai Tu Mera Bai
turns into a blockbuster.
Ive just begun to explore the musician in
me. It will be a long time before I feel con-
fdent to make the jump into acting like
Himesh Reshammiya did, says Honey.
Incidentally, producer Sunil Bohra already
has plans of buying the rights of Main Tera
Bai Tu Mera Bai to remake it into Hindi.
Bohra insists he will cast only Honey Singh
in the lead.

Blockbuster star Salman Khan has set a
new record by signing a Rs.500 crore deal
with Star TV Network India for the television
broadcast rights of his upcoming flms.
Post 2009 blockbuster Wanted, the
47-year-olds career is going from strength
to strength. In the last fve years, he has
churned out a string of successful flms -
Ready, Dabangg, Bodyguard, Ek Tha
Tiger and Dabangg 2 - all these flms
earned over Rs.100 crore at the box offce.
Hemal Jhaveri, general manager at Star
Gold, told IANS: Yes, we have signed a
deal with Salman Khan and whoever asks
me why Salman, I would only say why not
Salman Khan? His past box offce record
has been outstanding and his flm, which
Mumbai
Bollywood flmmaker Ramesh Sippy recre-
ated the popular suicide scene from his fa-
mous flm Sholay to promote his upcoming
movie Nautanki Saala. The flm is a come-
dy starring Ayushmann Khurrana and Kunal
Roy Kapur.
As part of the promotional proceedings, Ay-
ushmann was standing near a hoarding on
the busy link road in Andheri with Kunal on
the billboard.
Kunal became Veeru shouting famous dia-
logues of Dharamendra from the suicide
scene in Sholey while Ayushmann became
Jai, character played by Amitabh Bachchan,
and was trying to convince Kunal not to
jump. Kunal came down with help of cable
wire, thereby unveiling the poster of the flm.
This thing was done only for promotions.
The idea of having this famous scene from
Sholay just came randomly and we thought
to use it as this would help grab eyeballs,
director Rohan Sippy told the media.
The director also added that the scene will
not be a part of the flm.
The scene is just a part of the promotions
and is not there in the flm, he said.
Kunal who was seen in the flm Delhi Belly
said that he was initially hesitant to perform
the act.
I was kind of scared to do the act. But I had
a great time...It was fun, Kunal said.
Talking about the flm Nautanki Saala, Ay-
ushmann said that it was a fun experience.
We had great fun doing this flm. Kunal is a
brilliant actor, Ayushmann said.
Nautanki Saala is slated for an April re-
lease.

Good things are happening to Kartik Tiwari
- his second feature flm Akaash Vani has
came out on Friday and Subhash Ghai has
fnalised him as the male lead of his new flm
Kaanchi, in which a Bengali girl will play
the title role.
The girl is from Ghais acting school Whis-
tling Woods.
Ghai, who turned 68 Thursday, said: Af-
ter nine months of hunt I have fnalised the
hero and the heroine of my flm Kaanchi.
The hero is Kartik Tiwari and a new girl from
West Bengal, who is under training at Whis-
tling Woods and Mukta Arts, plays the hero-
ine. Rishi Kapoor and Mithun Chakraborty
play stellar roles in the flm.
Ghai is also excited about the music of
Kaanchi.
I have recorded three songs (composed) by
Ismail Darbar and penned by Irshad Kamil.
I am too excited about going on the sets in
February. It is such a fabulous script with
brilliant characters and great music, said
the flmmaker.
Kaanchi will release during the same week
when Ghais Karma was released in 1986.
Kaanchi will release on August 15, 2013.
Just wait and watch Kaanchi.
While details of the flms plot are elusive,
one learns that Kaanchi is akin to Raj Ka-
poors Ram Teri Ganga Maili. Its an epic
journey of a simple innocent girl into a world
of corruption and heartbreak.
Kartik Tiwari sounded understandably ex-
cited by the big break.
Every newcomer dreams of working with
Mr. Subhash Ghai. I am two flms old. My
second flm Akaash Vani will release in two
days. I am excited. And now to be a part of
a flm directed by Subhashji just makes the
picture complete, said Kartik, who debuted
with 2001 movie Pyaar Ka Punchnama
It took the 24-year-old nearly two years to
fnd his bearings in Bollywood.
To be honest, there was no long line of pro-
ducers at my door even after the good re-
sponse to Pyaar Ka Punchnama, said the
youngster and gives credit to his director Luv
Ranjan for not letting him sign wrong flms.
Mumbai
Actress Priyanka Chopra, who is busy work-
ing on Zanjeer remake, will be shooting a
special introductory song for the flm with
100 men.
We will be shooting with Priyanka Chopra
for a very special song. It is going to be an
unusual song where you will see 100 men
dancing with Priyanka. We will be shooting
for this song on Jan 27th, 28th and 29th,
a source close to the flms team told IANS.
The song will be the introductory song in
the flm, which will be choreographed by
Ganesh Acharya and is composed by Meet
brothers. It is going to be a fun-flled song,
the source added.
If reports are to be believed, flms leading
man Ram Charan Teja also has a special
song for him.
Produced by Amit Mehra and directed by
Apoorva Lakhia, the Zanjeer remake fea-
tures southern star Ram Charan Teja and
Priyanka in prominent roles.
While Ram Charan reprises megastar Am-
itabh Bachchans role of Vijay from the origi-
nal flm, Priyanka essays the role of Mala,
earlier played by Jaya Bachchan.

Directed by debutant Saurabh Verma, the
cast also has Manish Chaudhary of Rocket
Singh: Salesman of The Year fame.
Produced by Dar Motion Pictures, Mickey

in Mumbai and Delhi.
It is slated for a May 17 release.

When lovesick granny
lost all to a toyboy
A love-struck British grandmother holidaying
in Turkey had a terrible experience when she
lost all her lifes savings to a toyboy waiter. On
return, her family refused to let her in.
Pat Ekins, today 50, was frozen out by her
family and left to sleep on the British streets for
having lost her lifes savings to a toyboy waiter
she fell for during a whirlwind holiday romance,
Daily Express reported.
She sold her house without telling her two chil-
dren to plough 70,000 pounds into a bar in the
Turkish seaside resort of Marmaris. After Ekins
gave cash to Ibrahim Halin, 18 years junior to
her, he vanished from her life.
I was the black sheep of the family. I spent a
week sleeping on a park bench, rummaging
through bins for food, Ekins said while admit-
ting that it was a proper reality check.
Ekins was 46 when she met 28-year-old
Halin and would fy to Turkey every couple of
months. But things rapidly turned sour after
she sold the house in Lancashire.
The proceeds were supposed to be shared
with her two grown-up daughters -- Claire and
Karen. But Halin had promised Ekins that the
cash could be a great investment.
He told me wed make the money back and
more within a year. So I thought Id be able to
go back to my daughters and give them their
share, with some extra, she said.
I went to Turkey and transferred all the money
into his account. He left the apartment saying
he was going to sign the papers. But he didnt
come back.
Ekins was evicted from the fat and slept on
the foor of a Turkish barbers shop until a
friend paid for her to return home in Britain.
She found her family had nothing to do with
her any more.
Later, she turned her life round with the help
of homeless charity, by working in their shop
in return for a bed and a 35 pounds-a-week
allowance.
Today, Ekins lives in Essex and has no inten-
tion to return.

Race 2 is the sequel of super hit flm
Race released in 2008. It is a crime thrill-
er, which takes the story of frst part for-
ward combined with twists and turns. Bi-
pasha Basu will reprise her role of Sonia
in a special appearance. Made with the
massive budget of 87 crore it is the years
biggest movie which is anxiously being
awaited by the viewers.
Story:
Story of the movie starts where the frst
part ends with Ranveer and Sonia living
their life. But suddenly Sonia dies mys-
teriously and Ranveer begins the search
for her killer. Ranveer is helped by his old
pal RD (Anil Kapoor) and his secretary
Cherry ( Amisha Patel). This search of
Ranveer takes him to Turkey where the
Indian Mafa is run by Armaan Malik(John
Abraham) and his lover Elena(Deepika
Padukone). Armaan is the son of a person
who owned horses and used to race but
Ranveer destroyed everything. Ranveer
is unaware of this fact whereas Armaan
is determined to take revenge. Though
the story is not this simple and has many
twists and turns.
Review:
Race 2 is a crime thriller about charac-
ters who travel various European cit-
ies without any real purpose. From the
background scores to lush locales of ex-
otic Europe to blaring background scores
makes for an exhausting watch.
Saif Ali Khan in the role of Ranveer Singh
is witty, handsome and muscular. But he
lacks charm and versatility, and hes got
an ageing body. Although he attempts to
give Ranveer a compelling look due to
which hes left with more dance moves
than action sequences to show off. John
plays the main antagonist in the movie
who is seeking revenge to destroy Ran-
veer and amusingly he has played his
part very well, but his indifference in the
character makes it tough for us to take
him seriously. Anil as the fruit-indulging
Robert DCosta shares some silly mo-
ments with his stupid assistant Cherry.
All female leads of the flm- Jacqueline,
Ameesha and specially Deepika have
taken hotness, sexiness and glamour
to a whole new level. All though deepika
dazzles in the movie.
The narration is spoiled and inconsistent.
For example The placing of group dance
number, with all the actors grooving to
a remixed version of the original Race
soundtrack, bang in the middle of the
thriller.
Overall, with a strong story and cast,
Race 2 on many levels is a movie thats
all messed up and has no stuff. At times
it can be quite exhausting with mind-
boggling scenes like Saif appearing on
villains premises at will, helicopter as-
sumed fying with a train compartment,
Saif driving his car on a plane. Well, the
fact remains that movie Race 2 will be a
big treat for the audiences as the craze
for the flm is apparently quite high among
them. On the whole its just a pretentious
wannabe-thriller that is without any logic.

Kaun Mera -a beautiful romantic ballad
with mesmerizing vocals of Chaitra Am-

Written by Irshad kamil the lyrics are
simple yet catchy .Altogether this striking

versions, one by the Papon and other by
Sunidhi Chauhan which gives a soft treat-

Mujh mein tu- sung by Keerthi Sa-

which portrays the love for someone spe-
cial in ones heart. A fne track which will
be liked by those in love or seeking love.

Characters:
Babloo: an autistic man who has some
mental disorders but inside his heart he is
a hero. He is very slow in reading, under-
standing and speaking because of which
he is ignored by his friends and family.
But we as readers will be in awe of him
for his way of doing things.
Vandana: a family bounded and Sensi-
ble girl with high ambitions who is looking
for her perfect love, who later gets mar-
ried to Raghu against her wish.
Sikander: Being a friend of Babloo. He
is given a task of expressing Babloos
feelings to Vandana but he presents his
bad guy image by showing his cruel in-
tentions in the story.
Plot
The story starts with the introduction of
character Babloo which is also described
as a rejected child of his family. He spends
most of the time at different railway sta-
tions. After developing feelings for Van-
dana, he faces diffculty in expressing his
feelings and assigns Sikandar to do this
task .Sikandar a local resident and child-
hood friend of Babloo takes advantage of
the task assigned to him and draws on
Vandana for his selfsh intentions. Van-

Railway Colony has a dream of owning
an advertising agency. She is unaware of
Babloos longing for her and unwillingly is
engaged to his brother Raghu. Its when
Babloo becomes aware of Sikandars evil
intentions then we get to see the birth of
a super hero Rail Man.
Rishi Vohra has done a precise job. He
has given a readable and entertaining
content for all kind of readers. The book
gives one an honest glance into the life-
style of the Common man of Mumbai.
The simple font size made it easy to
read at interval. The entire plot revolves
around Vandana, Sikandar, families of
Railway staff and people living nearby
railway tracks of Mumbai which is also
called the Lifeline of Mumbai .Set in the
backdrop of railway tracks in Mumbai the
potential of author about Mumbais rail-
way network is marked in the book. Char-
acterization is done very well. As the plot
is very exceptional so It is not a common
love story happening every day. If you
know someone mentally abnormal then
this book helps you understand life from
their point of view.
My Verdict
The beautiful cover and the fresh sto-
ry, despite the largely racy description
proves boring but not boring enough to
make one throw the book aside even for
a short while. This book will appeal those
who are bored of a common love stories;
they must read this unusual love story of
autistic boy Babloo and ambitious girl
Vandana. Also the book is suggested by
the likes of Prahalad Kakar and Kabir Bedi.
Over all an honest read for your weekend
holiday, grab your cup of tea and live the life
of typical Mumbaikar through this book.

A gamma-ray burst may have caused an
intense blast of high-energy radiation that
hit the Earth in the eighth century, report
scientists from the Astrophysics Institute
of the University of Jena, Germany.
In 2012, scientist Fusa Miyake announced
the detection of high levels of the isotope
Carbon-14 and Beryllium-10 in tree rings
formed in 775 CE, suggesting that a burst
of radiation struck the Earth in the year
774 or 775.
Carbon-14 and Beryllium-10 form when
radiation from space collides with nitro-
gen atoms, which then decay to these
heavier forms of carbon and beryllium,
the journal Monthly Notices of the Royal
Astronomical Society reports.
The earlier research ruled out the nearby
explosion of a massive star (a super-
nova) as nothing was recorded in obser-
vations at the time and no remnant has
been found, according to an Astrophysics
Institute statement.
But Valeri Hambaryan and Ralph Neuhus-
er, of the Astrophysics Institute, have an-
other explanation, consistent with both
the carbon-14 measurements and the ab-
sence of any recorded events in the sky.
They believe the gamma ray burst origi-
nated in a system between 3,000 and
12,000 light years from the Sun.
They suggest that two compact stellar
remnants, i.e. black holes, neutron stars
or white dwarfs, collided and merged to-
gether.
When this happens, some energy is re-
leased in the form of gamma rays, the
most energetic part of the electromag-
netic spectrum that includes visible light.

An automatic detection system helps mo-
torists avoid personal injuries and dam-
age to vehicles on slippery roads caused
by the presence of snow.
Developed by the VTT Technical Re-
search Centre of Finland, the system
relies a real-time method of obtaining in-
formation on a roads actual slipperiness
based on data collected by the cars own
sensors.
The method entails estimating the dif-
ference in the speeds of the drive shaft
and freely rotating axles in various driving
situations, which enables deduction of
the level of friction, says senior scientist
Kimmo Erkkila from VTT.
The system is capable of determining the
slipperiness of a road on the basis of a
drive of a few kilometres. The information
is then passed on to the driver, before
he or she has even noticed the change
secret and unintentional capture in cam-
era images is now required, said univer-
sity professor Isao Echizen.
Echizen said the glasses, which connect
to a pocket power supply, would be rea-
sonably priced, but there are some sim-
pler alternatives.

Browser maker Mozilla introduced two
phones powered by its open source
Firefox OS platform with focus on low-
end markets.
In partnership with a Spanish start-up
named Geeks Phone and Spanish tele-
communications provider Telefonica,
Mozilla unveiled two 3G phones, Keon
and Peak, for its mobile system, reported
Xinhua.
This week we are announcing our new
Firefox OS developer preview phones
because we believe that developers will
help bring the power of the web to mo-
bile, Mozilla said in its offcial blog.
The Keon model features a small 3.5-
inch screen, 1 GHz processor and 4GB
storage, making it barely comparable to
a cheap Android phone in the US market.
Rather than taking on major market play-
ers like iPhone, Mozilla plans to focus
initially on developing markets where
customers started to upgrade to smart-
phones from feature phones.
At the Mobile World Congress in Spain
last year, Telefonica, with half of its cus-
tomers in Latin America, said it hoped to
bring smartphones to the masses in de-
veloping countries with Mozillas browser-
based operating system with a price ten
times cheaper than iPhone.
Launching the development project in
July 2011, Mozilla touted the system as
more accessible and completely open,
compared to walled gardens of Apple
iOS and Google Android.
The nanowires are made of the
semiconductor material indium
phosphide and work like antennae
that absorb sunlight and generate
power.
The nanowires are assembled on
surfaces of one square mm that
each house four million nanowires.
A nanowire solar cell can produce
an effect several times greater than
todays silicon cells.
Nanowire solar cells have not yet
made it beyond the labs, but the
plan is that the technology could be
used in large solar power plants in
sunny regions such as the south-
western US, southern Spain and Af-
rica, according to a Lund statement.
The researchers have now managed to
identify the ideal diameter of the nanow-
ires and how to synthesise them.
The right size is essential for the nanow-
ires to absorb as many photons as pos-
sible. If they are just a few tenths of a
nanometre too small their function is sig-
nifcantly impaired, says Borgstrom.
The silicon solar cells that are used to
supply electricity for domestic use are
relatively cheap, but ineffcient because
they are only able to utilise a limited part
of the effect of the sunlight. The reason is
that one single material can only absorb
part of the spectrum of the light.

Can you name an animal that returns to the

hint: This animal is a sea creature that origi-
nated on earth more than 200 million years

other than marine turtles, more commonly
known as sea turtles. Seven existing spe-

which at least four (the Olive Ridley, Green
Hawksbill, Leatherback and Flatback) are
fairly common in the waters of the Indian
Ocean. The sea turtle, or the Leatherback
is the largest living turtle. It can grow up to

Calligraphy means beautiful writing.It
comes from the Greek words, Kallos and
graphos .The alphabets are written in in-
dicative manners to make it more attractive
and to add a sense of ability to the handwrit-
ing. It can be both a pleasure to the eye and
an inspiration to someone. In our scientifc
age, the approval for the art of calligraphy
has grown exceptionally .it is easy to learn,
all you need to do it are a few special tools
and a bit of patient practice which can en-
hance your art. A special type of ink, paper,
and pens could actually turn your ordinary
handwriting into calligraphy art. Grow that
art inside you and express it through writ-
ing. Calligraphy is still fourishing today. Cal-
ligraphy as an art will also remain in great
demand,as it is today and in future too.
Calligraphy kit: Using a calligraphy kit isnt
very hard at all. Many people and write with
a corner of the broad tip. This is incorrect.
You should have the whole broad tip on the
paper. Then you begin writing your letter,
without changing the angle of the pen. You
must follow the correct strokes for writing
each letters, and lift your pen or marker. For
example, the letter, o, involves two strokes.
Once you purchase a calligraphy teaching
book, youll learn the right strokes for re-
spective letter form you are experimenting
with.
Calligraphy: business or hobby?
The writing method developed in calligraphy
is fowing and spontaneous and you could
actually generate a business by designing
wedding invitations, logo designs and me-
morial documents. After learning the art of
calligraphy as a hobby, you can do well in
the feld of cinema too, with the ability to en-
hance graphics. Beyond the need for spe-
cial pens and paper the art does not require
many materials, but it does involve virtues
like a lot of patience, dedication, and the ba-
sic love for the art.
Here are a few things that you can create
with calligraphy.

President Pranab Mukherjee said In-
dia is fully committed to implement the
Turkmenistan-Afghanistan-Pakistan-In-
dia (TAPI) gas pipeline project by August
2017.
India is defcient in energy resources
whereas Turkmenistan is rich in hydro-
carbon resources. Our common endeav-
our should be to build enduring ties be-
tween our two friendly countries based on
a long-term energy partnership, Mukher-
jee said when Rashid Meredov, deputy
prime minister and foreign minister of
Turkmenistan, called on him at Rashtra-
pati Bhavan.
Turkmenistan, which holds more than
4 per cent of the worlds natural gas re-
serves, is emerging as a potential partner
in Indias quest for energy security with
the project advancing rapidly since the
visit of President Gurbanguly Berdimu-
hamedov to New Delhi in 2010.
State-run gas frm GAIL last year signed
a gas purchase agreement with Turk-
menistans national oil frm for supplies
through a transnational pipeline.
Billed as Peace Pipeline, the 1,680-km
TAPI pipeline will have a capacity to carry
90 million cubic metres a day (mcmd) gas
for a 30-year period and will be opera-
tional in 2018.
The president thanked Turkmenistan for
its support for Indias candidature for per-
manent membership of an expanded UN
Security Council.
Meredov responded warmly, describing
India as a long standing friend and part-
ner of Turkmenistan both in bilateral co-
operation as well as in multilateral fora.

Insurance frm Max Bupa Tuesday
launched its Health@Companion insur-
ance scheme online to reach customers
in smaller cities and towns.
The product can only be bought online
and would help the company cut distribu-
tion and other costs by 15 percent.
The company will thus be able to lower
the premium paid by customers living in
the tier-II and tier-III cities. The premium
would also refect the lower medical costs
in a particular region.
We feel that this unique product will bring
in more volumes, as it gives us immense
reach into the tier-II and III cities, said
Manasije Mishra, chief executive, Max
Bupa.
The lower premium factor also will make
the new product more attractive for buy-
ers in these areas.
The company, which has presence in
some 12 Indian cities, added that it will
keep innovating new products that can be
sold over the e-commerce platforms.

Russia sold a record $15.16 billion worth
of weaponry in 2012 to countries includ-
ing India, Myanmar, Vietnam, Venezuela
and in the Middle East, a federal military
agency has said.
The volume of arms exports has reached
$15.16 billion, according to preliminary
calculations, which means that our plans
have been fulflled by 111.8 percent, said
Alexander Fomin, chief of the Federal
Military-Technical Cooperation Service
(FSMTC).
In 2011, Russia reported arms sales of
$13.2 billion, enough to maintain its posi-
tion as the worlds second-biggest arms
exporter after the US.
In the past 10 years, we have seen a
general increase in exports, which have
tripled since 2003, Fomin said.
The portfolio of orders for defence-relat-
ed products has also tripled. Its current
value exceeds $46 billion, he said.
India is the leading purchaser of Russian
arms, with Myanmar, Vietnam, Venezuela
and Middle East countries also among the
Russian defence industrys main clients.
Fomin said Russias expanded list of

Spice Global has forayed into healthcare
business by setting up a hospital in the
national capital with an initial investment
of Rs.400 crore ($74 million), B.K. Modi,
promoter of the $2 billion diversifed frm,
said here.
Delhi Lt Governor Tejendra Khanna Tues-
day inaugurated the frst phase of the
hospital, named Saket City Hospital.
Modi said the Singapore-headquartered
Spice Globals focus in 2013 will be on
healthcare business. The companys ma-
jor business interests are in telecom, f-
nance and entertainment technology.
We are bringing aboard the best talent
backed by state-of-the-art facilities, infra-
structure and services. We are confdent
of redefning the concept of healthcare
in India through technological innovation
and sensitive patient care, Modi said.
Modi said there was a huge scope for ex-
pansion of modern healthcare business
in India and the companys foray into the
sector was timely.
its clients in 2012 included Afghanistan,
Ghana, Oman and Tanzania.
The FSMTC also said the quality of ex-
ported Russian military products has
improved, though problems still remain,
especially with poor after-sales services.
We have been issuing fewer licenses
to replace or repair exported products,
which is an encouraging trend, Fomin
said.
There have been controversies over the
quality of Russias defence-related prod-
ucts.
Algeria refused delivery of a batch of MiG-
29 fghters in 2007 claiming they were of
inferior quality.
Russias traditionally strong position on
the Indian arms market has been recently
undermined by failures to fulfll or prop-
erly execute several contracts, including
the long-delayed delivery of overhauled
aircraft carrier Vikramaditya to the Indian
Navy.
Fomin said his service was drafting new
legislation that would allow Russian arms
manufacturers to open their own service
centres abroad and to import defence-re-
lated products to satisfy their own needs.
As India continues to advance and raise
its benchmark of development, the need
for a modern, fast reacting and sensitive
healthcare ecosystem is most immedi-
ate, he said.
Modi said Saket City Hospital will be
completed by mid-2016. It will have 1000
bed capacity.
The company is developing the hospital
in three phases. The frst phase is com-
plete. The second phase will be complet-
ed by June this year with 230-bed facili-
ties.
The hospital offers super-specialties in
cardiac sciences, neurosciences, gastro-
enterology and gastrointestinal surgery,
obstetrics and gynaecology besides or-
thopaedics and joint replacement, said
Pervez Ahmed, chairman, medical and
service committee of Saket City Hospital
Board.
As we expand our services in a phased
manner, we will continue to raise our
benchmark of patient experience,
Ahmed said.

Chinas vehicle exports have topped the
one-million mark for the frst time, latest
statistics show.
In 2012, the China Association of Auto-
mobile Manufacturers said the country
delivered a total of 1,056,100 vehicles
abroad, a 29.7 percent rise from 2011,
the China Daily reported.
Though the year-on-year growth was 50
percent in the previous year, the rate was
still higher than the 4.3 percent increase
for the domestic market.
Passenger cars accounted for 45 percent
of the exports while trucks accounted for
28 percent, the report said.
Chery Automobile Co. Ltd. and Zhejiang
Geely Holding Group both saw exports of
over 100,000 units in 2012, followed by
Great Wall Motors Co. Ltd., SAIC Motor
Corp. Ltd. and Chongqing Lifan Industry
Co.

The International Monetary Fund (IMF)
chief says 2013 will be a make or break
year, a few hours after the IMF revised its
forecast for this years global growth rate
down to 3.5 percent.
The recovery is still weak, and uncer-
tainty is still high, IMF managing director
Christine Lagarde said at the World Eco-
nomic Forum annual meeting here.
She said main sources of risks in 2013
are coming from advanced economies,
including the Eurozone, the US and Ja-
pan, and urged them to keep up the mo-
mentum.
She said what the governments in the eu-
rozone have done in the last 18 months
is remarkable and she is optimistic about
Europes future.
However, its not the time to relax, she
said.
Lagarde is less worried about the emerg-
ing countries, but she stressed that
emerging economies have to rebuild the
buffers they have used up during the cri-
sis.
I believe that if we continue to act, we will
get beyond the crisis, she said.
She said that the world is in the ante-
chamber of a new global economy, which
will be geographically different, driven
more by the dynamic emerging markets
and developing countries, but it will also
be generationally different, shaped by dif-
ferent values and principles.
She called for more openness and coop-
eration between nations, more inclusion
and solidarity among people and stronger
accountability of those responsible for the
global economy.

Fertiliser subsidy
may exceed
budget estimate
by $7.4 bn: FAI
New Delhi
Indias fertiliser subsidy burden is likely to
overshoot the budgetary estimate by at least
Rs.40,000 crore ($7.4 billion) to Rs.1 lakh
crore in the fnancial year ending March 31,
top offcials of the Fertiliser Association of In-
dia said.
Satish Chander, director general of Fertiliser
Association of India (FAI), told reporters here
that the budgetary estimate for the fertiliser
subsidy was not realistic as the actual burden
is likely to be much more.
In the union budget for 2012-13, a provision
of Rs.61,000 crore was made for fertiliser
subsidy.
Actual burden is likely to overshoot by at
least Rs.40,000 crore, said Chander, adding
that the fertiliser frms have not been paid the
subsidy part by the government for the last
eight months.
Fertiliser is supplied to the farmers in India at
a heavily subsidised rate.
According to the association, only 40 percent
of the cost is recovered from the farmer while
the rest comes from the government kitty as
subsidy.
P.S. Gahlaut, managing director, India Pot-
ash Limited, said the fertiliser industry has
been pitching for decontrol. We have been
requesting the government to directly trans-
fer the subsidy to farmers, he said.
Gahlaut said the fertiliser industry has been
running on a very thin proft margin due to the
government control on the prices.
The net proft of overall fertiliser industry in
India in the fnancial year 2011-12 was about
Rs.2,500 crore, just nearly two percent of the
total turnover of Rs.117,000 crore, Gahlaut
said.

Reliance Power announced a 30 percent rise
in net proft for the quarter ended December
2012 year-on-year, beating street estimates.
The proft after tax (PAT) rose to Rs.266 crore
as against Rs.204 crore in the like period a
year ago.
The net proft was aided by record generation
from the 1,200 MW Rosa power plant (Uttar
Pradesh), J.P. Chalasani, company chief ex-
ecutive, said.
Sales increased to Rs.1,464 crore from
Rs.457 crore year-on-year, while EBITDA
jumped by 252 percent to Rs.493 crore.
The companys total income grew over two-
fold at Rs.1,586 crore for the September-De-
cember period. It had reported a total income
of Rs.674 crore in the third quarter of the pre-
vious fscal.
The third quarter has proved to be an excel-
lent one for the company as we turned in out-
standing operational and fnancial numbers,
Chalasani said
Pre-commissioning activities have started
at our 3,960 MW Sasan Ultra Mega Power
Project and the project is all set to be com-
missioned in this quarter, well ahead of the
bid schedule. Chalasani added.
The company said coal production has al-
ready begun from the Sasan projects other
captive coal mines - the 20 MTPA (million
tonnes per annum) Moher and Moher Amlori
Extension mines.
The companys 40 MW Dhursar solar photo-
voltaic plant in Rajasthan generated a record
15.2 MUs in this quarter which resulted in a
net proft of Rs.12 crore.
It said said construction was on at the 100
MW Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) proj-
ect, a part of the governments National Solar
Mission.in Dhursar, and the project is ex-
pected to be commissioned in frst quarter of
fnancial year 2014.
Work in the companys 45 MW wind project
in Maharashtra is in its fnal stages, and the
project is expected to be commissioned by
the end of March.
Reliance Power shares were up 5.19 percent
at Rs. 94.20 in late afternoon trade on the
Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE).

A shale formation containing up to 233 bil-
lion barrels of petroleum was found in central
Australia by Linc Energy, media reports said.
Linc said reports from two independent con-
sultants confrmed the existence of the non-
conventional oil deposits in Arckaringa basin
in South Australia, the ABC network reported.
Shale oil, which was diffcult to extract just a
few years ago, is produced by using hydrau-
lic fracturing, or fracking.
Fracking is controversial and involves pump-
ing a pressurized fuid - usually composed of
water, sand and chemicals - into the shale
formation to create a fracture in the rock lay-
er and release trapped petroleum or natural
gas.
The process has been used in the US for
about three decades, but new technologies
have allowed energy companies to reach oil
and gas deposits that were previously inac-
cessible.
Environmentalists oppose hydraulic fractur-
ing on the grounds that it pollutes the soil and
aquifers.

Of course, my aim is to be driving at the

continued as test and reserve driver for the

FC Barcelona has announced that club cap-

club until the end of June 2016.
The new contract means that Puyol, who will

It is important for me to sign this contract,

to be able to see it out. I know how important
it is to be in physical shape and I am clear of
the fact that I have to look after myself both
on and off the pitch, said the defender, who
added his ambition was to continue playing
until he was 40 if possible.
that we have had to take steps to secure
our long-term future. Tough economic condi-
tions prevail and the commercial landscape
is diffcult for everyone, Formula 1 teams in-
cluded.
Glock, who competed in 55 Grands Prix for
Marussia with a best fnish of 12th, was keen
to pay tribute to the team.
I have had three excellent years with the
Marussia F1 Team, during which I had the
chance to actively participate in building and
developing the team in its endeavours to
succeed within the Formula 1 World Cham-
pionship, he said.
I am in fact very excited about what the fu-
ture holds in terms of my own career and I
hope to comment on that very soon.
Glocks departure leaves Marussia with
rookie Max Chilton as their only confrmed
driver for the 2013 season.
We will provide an update regarding the
completion of our driver line-up in due
course, added Booth.
Marussia have also yet to confrm an unveil-
ing date for their new car

We have seen an improvement in the per-
centage of frst-time voters in the past two
years. We want to add many more, he said.
Continuing its drive to involve more citizens,
especially youths, in the electoral process,
the poll panel will observe the third National
Voters Day Jan 25 when photo identity cards
will be given to some frst-time voters.
Uttar Pradesh, Gujarat and West Bengal
will be given the best state award for perfor-
mance on various poll management param-

select district collectors and superintendents

The National Voters Day coincides with the
foundation day of the EC.

Rohit, Raina fashion Indias
series win
Li Na-Azarenka set up title
clash, Djokovic in mens fnal
Mohali
Rohit Sharma fnally fulflled expectations of
his class, and along with Suresh Raina se-
cured India a 3-1 series win over England
by clinching the fourth One-day International
here.
Rohit, asked to open in his frst game of the
series, struck a sublime 83 before Raina (89
not out) got the team past Englands 257
for seven in 47.3 overs with fve wickets to
spare at the Punjab Cricket Association Sta-
dium here.
Contributions from Captain Alastair Cook
(76) and Kevin Pietersen (76) did not prove
to be enough for the visitors, who have been
outplayed in the series.
The series win was a welcome result for
India, who were under pressure after los-
ing to England in the Test matches, and to
Pakistan in a short one-day series. The f-
nal game will be played at the picturesque
town of Dharamsala in Himachal Pradesh
Sunday.
Melbourne
Chinese tennis sensation Li Na will meet de-
fending champion Victoria Azarenka in her
second Australian Open fnal after she swept
second-seeded Russian Maria Sharapova
6-2, 6-2 here Thursday.
Belarusian Azarenka overcame American
teenager Sloane Stephens in the other
semi-fnal.
Li Na reached her frst Grand Slam fnal at
Melbourne Park in 2011 but lost to Kim Cli-
jsters of Belgium, just before she won the
frst Grand Slam singles title in the French
Open, Xinhua reports.
Sharapova, who only lost a record nine
games in her previous fve matches, strug-
gled with her serve from the very beginning
of the match. She double-faulted twice in her
frst game, allowing Li to take the early ad-
vantage.
Li got 2-0 and then broke again for 4-1 with
a cross-court return. Sharapova fought her
way to three break points in the sixth game
and secured the chance when Li missed a
return.
Li returned the favour in the following game
to lead 5-2. The No.6 seed served for the
set, racing to 40-0 and wrapped the frst set
up in 48 minutes.
The Chinese took the frst service break
in the second set to go 3-2 up, grabbed a
second at 5-2 and served out the match.
Sharapova saved one match point but Li
came up with an ace to take the advantage
and didnt waste the second chance.
The straight-set victory improved Lis re-
cord against Sharapova to 5-8. The pair met
three times in 2012 and the Russian won all
of the clashes.
In the other semi-fnal, Azarenka broke Ste-
phens in the frst game and again in the ffth
and seventh to wrap up the frst set in 33
minutes. The 19-year-old Stephens saved
fve match points before the frst-seeded Be-
larusian recorded a 6-1, 6-4 victory in one
hour 41 minutes.
In the mens singles, defending champion
Novak Djokovic is now only one victory from
his hat-trick of titles here after reaching his
third consecutive fnal.
The Serb thrashed fourth-seeded David Fer-
rer 6-2, 6-2, 6-1 in one hour and 29 minutes
and fred a warning to Andy Murray and
Roger Federer who will play the other semi-
fnal Friday.
Djokovic, who could be the frst player to win
three consecutive Australian Open titles in
the Open era, ran the Spaniard around the
court and fnished points with style and pow-
er to keep his unbeaten Grand Slam record
against Ferrer.
The Serb won more than twice as many
points as Ferrer, stringing together 12 in a
row during the second set to underline the
one-way nature of the contest.
He rode a confdence wave through the third
set, making spectacular winners look regu-
lation, as he gave up just 11 points for the
set.
With the win, Djokovic extended his winning
streak at Melbourne Park to 20.
India experienced some nervous
moments in the run-chase before
getting over the line. The start was
rather slow.
Gautam Gambhir (10), in the com-
pany of his new partner Rohit, could
not carry on for long as he was
adjudged caught behind off Tim
Bresnan, but he looked unhappy
with the decision.
The Mumbai batsman hung on in
conditions where runs were hard to
come by. He and Virat Kohli (26) took
the innings forward before Kohli be-
came the victim of a soft dismissal,
patting back to offe James Tredwell.
Yuvraj Singhs (3) wicket made it 90
for three in the 23rd over with the
left-hander falling to Tredwell for the
fourth time in as many games. The
stylish batsman disappointed fans
at his home ground by playing an
ordinary sweep shot, trapping him
plumb in front.
Raina then joined Rohit at the crease
and the duo got the innings a much
needed move on.
It was pleasant to see Rohit doing
justice to his talent. His knock saw elegant
drives to go with his pull and cut shots.
Raina was at his belligerent best.
Rohit was adjudged leg before off Finn, leav-
ing India at 158 for four with another 100
runs needed for the victory. At this juncture,
Rainas back would have sent panic in the
dressing room but he was handed a reprieve
after getting caught at frst slip. Finn came to
his rescue by hitting the stumps on the deliv-
ery stride with umpire calling it a dead ball.
It was a smooth run from there on even
though skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (19)
failed to last the distance this time around.
Raina and Ravindra Jadeja (21) carried the
team through.
Earlier, England smashed 100 runs off the
last 10 overs to post a fghting total. Joe
Root did most of the damage towards the
end, hammering an unbeaten 57 off 45 balls.
Cook and Pietersen shared 95 runs for the
second wicket.
Beaten in Mohali, England wary of
Dharamsala
Jaypee Greens names Bhullar as
brand ambassador
Mohali
Beaten comprehensively by India by fve
wickets in the fourth one-day International
(ODI) here Wednesday, England are now
wary of the conditions in Dharamsala in Hi-
machal Pradesh where the last game of the
fve-match series will be played Jan 27.
Having already lost the series 3-1, England
captain Alastair Cook said that the partner-
ship between Indian batsmen Rohit Sharma
and Suresh Raina, scoring 68 runs for the
fourth wicket, Wednesday saw the game
here slip away from England.
As the England side head for the last game
of the series in the hill station of Dharamsa-
la, 250 km from here, the visitors are wary of
the cold conditions there.
I am not quite sure how the conditions are
going to be like in the next game, he told
media persons after the game here at the
Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium,
New Delhi
Indian golfer Ganganjeet Bhullar, a four-
time Asian Tour winner, has been signed as
a brand ambassador for the Jaypee Green
Golf Resort for a period of three years.
Bhullar would be representing the debutants
Jaypee Green Greater Noida in the second
edition of the golfs inter-city tournament.
The second edition of the $200,000 Louis
Philippe Cup will be played at the Jaypee
Green Golf Resort Feb 11-16.
Bhullar, who played for Dev-Ellora Chan-
digarh team last year, would join veterans
Sanjay Kumar and Vijay Kumar and the trio
has so far won over 100 professional events
between them.
Speaking about their chances in the com-
petition, Bhullar said, I have played at this
Greg Norman Jaypee Golf Course before.
This course suits my style of playing. This
is one course where lot of power hitting and
long shots will help. And my game suits that.
The experience of both Sanjay and Vijay will
only strengthen our team.
Bhullar, who reached a career high ranking
of 88 last year, also said that he aimed to get
into the top-50 in the world ranking this year
and get more invitations from the European
tour.
With Indias top 27 golfers representing nine
cities: Bangalore, Chennai, Kolkata, Delhi,
Noida, Gurgaon, Ahmedabad , Chandigarh
and Greater Noida, golf enthusiasts are
keenly awaiting the second edition of the
Louis Philippe Cup.
adding that he had heard
reports that Dharamsala
had seen snow in recent
days.
I was looking at the re-
ports on my iPad which
said it (weather) is clear,
Cook said, even though
he looked quite wary of
what to expect at the next
venue.
I hope people behind
me are going to make the
right decisions. We have
to get in and out of that
(place) safely, he said.
In Wednesdays game,
Cook said, his team had
a fair chance with 257 runs on the board but
the Rohit Sharma (83) and Suresh Raina
(89 not out) stand took the game away from
Englands hands.
The England captain admitted that there was
confusion on the ground when Raina was
caught but umpire Steve Davis declared it
a dead ball as fast-bowler Steven Finn had
knocked down the bails while bowling.
It was frustrating when such things hap-
pen...there was a little bit of confusion. We
tried to clarify things, Cook said.
He admitted that his team had been told by
the umpires earlier about the rule.
The England side had been told about the
rule in Kochi, where also the bails were
knocked down by Finn.
Despite the series being lost, Cook said
that England will pick the best side for the
Dharamsala match.
