2011 ACHIEVMENTS AT A GLANCE

They are placed at 5th position in the World. LEANDER PAES and MAHESH BHUPATHI are ranked at the 4th position in the World. India has 3 Doubles specialists in the top 10 rank in the World. SANIA MIRZA is ranked are the 11th position in the Doubles and 87 in the Singles in the World. SOMDEV DEVVARMAN is ranked at the 84th position in the World. INDIAN junior’s team was placed at 5th position at the World Tennis Championship WJC . SOMDEV DEVVARMAN was awarded Arjuna Award on 29 August 2011. He had struck a golden double last year by finishing on top in both the Commonwealth and Asian Games singles events. India hosted the FIRST international WHEELCHAIR TENNIS Tournament $2000 at the RK Khanna tennis stadium. The IC India Juniors Team supported by AITA has for the 3rd consecutive year WON the IC Asian Youth Challenge 2011 at Singapore.
DAVIS CUP BY BNP PARIBAS India has been participating in the Davis Cup since 1921. In 2011 in the very first round we lost to the existing champions Serbia 1‐4 an away tie at Belgrade. In the World Group playoff in Tokyo on 16‐18 September Japan defeated India by a similar margin. The Japanese benefited from very good performances from the young Yuichi Sugita, who beat India´s No. 1 Somdev Devvarman in the opening match, and Kei Nishikori, who earned his two singles points, to reach a place in the World Group after 26 years. India has reverted back to the Asia/ Oceania Group I in 2012.
India has received a first round BYE and will play the winner of the New Zealand v Uzbekistan in the second round of the Zone Asia/Oceania Group I.
