PERINATAL QUESTIONNAIRE

2008

Executive report regarding the first obtained results The perinatal survey was conducted in all public places of the Provence and the city of Buenos Aires during the month of September 2008. The coverage of the survey (surveyed births / deliveries performed) exceeded 95%, which ensures reliability in the data. The following report is based on processing of 100.0% of the surveys, it is necessary to alter some variables but reliable enough to identify certain trends (including data from the city of Buenos Aires (CABA) and 11 health regions (HR)) because the coverage reached by the survey is equivalent to 98.7% of births took place in that period. The distribution by age shows that 21.6% were pregnant adolescents (<20 years old) with 0.9% younger than 15 years. 1.7% of pregnancies were in women greater than 40 years of age. The results demonstrated that 35.8% were nulliparas, 27.3% were had two children, and 15.5% had three. For 21.4% of the pregnant women, this was greater than or equal to their 4th delivery. 5.6% of the pregnant women referred to having 1 or previous stillbirths. The nationality of the participants showed that 79.7% were Argentineans, 10.2% were Paraguayans, 6.6% were Bolivians, and 2.1% were Peruvians. 10.1% reported to being single and 3.3% reported they were in a stable or eventual relationship. 18.7% claimed to have smoked during this pregnancy. 11.5% reported that her baby was admitted to the NICU and 0.7% died.

- During the interview, the reseacher observed the position of the baby in the crib. 52.5% were placed on their back, 46.3% on the side, and 1.1% on their stomachs. Prenatal Care and Care at Delivery 95.6% reported to having prenatal care with 21.6% saying they had <5 prenatal appointments. 40.2% had their 1st prenatal appointment during the second trimester. 27.8% had their first check-up without a scheduled appointment. 95.4% had blood drawn but only 72.2% were given iron. 37.9% said they had to pay for care at any point during the pregnancy (whether for the doctor’s visit, a lab test, a sonogram, etc.) Only 17.6% were accompanied by their partner or person of her choice during labor and only 10.8% were accompanied during the delivery. 67.1% reported that they would have like to be accompanied. 33.1% did not put her baby to the breast within the first hour after birth.

15.7% indicated that they had intended to deliver in a different hospital but weren’t able to because there wasn’t an available bed (27.3%) or they were on strike (8.7%) or they were admitted but sent to another hospital (6.8%) or another cause (57.1%).

Contraception 50.3% said that the pregnancy was not desired. 43.2% did not use a method of contraception.

Prenatal Care Only 40% of the parturients recorded prenatal information in a booklet. 14.9% did not document the application of a tetanus vaccine, 9.6% laboratory analyses, 7.9% sonograms, and 53.2% cervical studies. The number of documented prenatal visits showed 31.3% had less than 5 visits (6.7% with 0). Only 27.3% had their first prenatal visit prior to the 12th week and 64.8% prior to the 20th week.

Delivery and the Neonate 26.5% of the deliveries were Cesarean sections and 1.0% required forceps. 33.7% had an episiotomy. 24.3% of the neonates had an insufficient weight (< 3000 gr), 7.5% were <2500 gr and 1.3% were < 1500 gr
