INTELLIGENCE FOR ThE WINE CONSUMER by Len Napolitano

What is hang time?

You may be tempted to think that hang time refers to how long you stand at the tasting room bar while sipping through the wine list. However, in the wine-growing world it can also be a subject of pride, but, thankfully, for a more meaningful reason. Hang time is all about grape ripeness. With trends toward more concentrated, bolder and more alcoholic red wines over the last decade, winegrowers work hard at choosing when to pick grapes at harvest so that they get the ripest grapes possible, without being overripe, or with too high a sugar level. Allowing grapes to hang on the vine longer before picking can add fine qualities to a wine, but its not without risk. Relatively speaking, very ripe grapes produce a very high sugar level, which ferments to a very high alcohol level. But while sugar levels, measured on a scale called Brix, rise inside the grape, the acidity decreases. Acidity is important because its what gives a wine freshness and a lively fruitiness. So, achieving the optimal balance of sugar and acidity at the time the grapes are picked is generally the primary objective. Grapes are typically picked when Brix readings are anywhere between 22 and 28 degrees, depending on the grape variety and the desires of the winemaker. Waiting for higher sugar levels means the possibility of the grapes becoming overripe, causing an unpleasant quality in the wine or else problems with fermentations that tend to be slow, or stop altogether. So, if you think of the growing season as the amount of time grapes remain on the vine, from bud break in the spring to picking time at harvest, then hang time is generally defined as the amount of time grapes remain on the vine after reaching a sugar level of about 24 Brix. Wine regions with warm but not very hot days and cool afternoons and evenings, like Monterey County, have a longer growing season than warmer regions up to a month longer when you take into consideration early budding and late ripening. They are therefore capable of enjoying more hang time for the grapes. Stretching out the growing season allows the grapes to develop more intense flavor, color and complexity, characteristics of great wines. Although measuring ripeness has been debated over the years, most people rely upon scientific measurements of sugar, acid and pH levels in the grapes. Others simply taste and examine the berries, seeds and skins, checking for physiological maturity. Regardless of how it is measured, there is little disagreement among winemakers as to the value of grape hang time and its impact on their grapes.

POMAR JUNCTION VINEYARD & WINERY

Recently the Merrill family announced an expansion of resources with the purchase of 278 acres in the El Pomar District of the Paso Robles AVA. This expansive property was formerly the Weyrich estate, and combines a unique location with specific grape growing conditions, making it a natural fit for maintaining the quality associated with Pomar Junction and this unique region. Currently, 93 acres are planted with Rhne, Bordeaux and Italian varietals that thrive in the propertys growing conditions and complement both the winery offerings of Pomar Junction Vineyard & Winery and the needs of Mesa Vineyard Management customers. The maturity of the existing vines will allow immediate production of wines from this property and plans are underway to certify this vineyard Sustainable in Practice, continuing the responsible farming methods found throughout the familys properties. Also, as future opportunities allow for growth, an estimated 60 acres have been identified as suitable for additional planting. Incorporation of this property allows Pomar Junction a spectacular new resource to encourage the continued development of their quality wine profile, memorable wine country experience and expanded exposure of the El Pomar District as a distinguished wine growing region. The El Pomar District is home to vineyards that produce notable wines for brands such as Justin Vineyards & Winery, J. Lohr Vineyards & Wines, E. & J. Gallo Winery and Still Waters Vineyards. Recent expansion of vineyards in this area is directly aligned with the growth of its recognition for producing sought-after flavor profiles. Located on Creston Ridge Road, near the intersection of South El Pomar Road and Creston Road, the vines on this property are influenced by the same calcareous soils, steep south-facing slopes and Templeton Gap breezes that the Merrill family has long appreciated about the El Pomar District. The dedicated work of wine industry pioneers, Dana Merrill among them, has led to a growing appreciation of this sub-region for its one-of-a-kind reflection of terroir resulting in distinctive wines. The Merrill Family will host its first dinners in the immaculate wine cellar for Zin Festival on March 16th and as part of the celebration for the Earth Day Food and Wine Festival on April 19th. The Merrill Family is proud to host the Main Event for the Earth Day Food and Wine Festival again this year at Pomar Junction Vineyard and Winery on Saturday, April 20th.

This is a historic viticultural area with vines first planted in the 1800s, and now hosts many small wineries. The Edna Valley Winery is one of the oldest in the area and has been around for 30+ years in its current incarnation and produces some of the best. WINEMAKER PROFILE

BROKEN EARTH WINERY

BY BRETTE ANN WOMACk

Winemaker Chris Cameron

Open daily from 10:30 a.m. - 5.30 p.m. 5625 highway 46 East, Paso Robles, CA 93446 (805) 239-2562 | www.brokenearthwinery.com

Broken Earth Winery is located on the eastside of Paso Robles just off of Highway 46 and only five miles from Highway 101. The 2500-acre ranch, which is home to the Broken Earth winery, a historic vineyard and a world class tasting room, is called Rancho Tierra Rejada, which translates to, land of worked earth. While Broken Earth is a young winery, just over one year old, the history and experience behind it run deep. The estate vineyard, Shimmin Canyon, was established in 1973, and winemaker, Chris Cameron, has 45 harvests under his belt. The vineyards maturity offers an extremely diverse block selection, and each block has its own unique personality. Chris invaluable international wine experience blends perfectly with the variety of the estate and the Broken Earth wines. Broken Earth Winery is actually divided into five different brands including Broken Earth, Shimmin Canyon, Pull, Quadrant and Triptych. Chris preferred winemaking method is to keep each lot of juice from the vineyard separate, from harvest until blending. Each lot expresses entirely unique flavors from the next, and instead of having to blend everything into one bottle; Broken Earths variety of brands ensures that each lot keeps the integrity that Chris first experienced during its particular harvest. Many of the wines of Broken Earth are comprised of Bordeaux varietals. The Pull Bordeaux blend earned a gold at the San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition. Broken Earth, Pull and Shimmin Canyon each offer an example of a single variety Bordeaux wine, from Merlot to Petit Verdot. Chris enjoys showcasing the varietal definition of each of these grapes. He picks the grapes before they are over-ripe; enabling the wines to have the age-ability which Bordeaux varieties are known for.

However, Chris is just as excited about Broken Earths Rhone blends. The Quandrant Copper is a blend of Grenache, Syrah, Petite Sirah (pretty standard right?) and Viogner (what?). The touch of Viogner in the blend adds to the aromatics and charm of the wine. The 2010 Quadrant achieved a gold in the San Francisco Chronicle. The Triptych red wine is an easy drinker, which includes Grenache, Syrah and Petite Sirah. It is a good thing that Chris is extra interested in his Rhone wines because Broken Earth is hosting the Paso Robles Rhone Rangers Experience on February 17th. The event offers several experiences including the Rhone Essentials Seminar, the Vintners Lunch, a Grand Tasting (with 150 wines to be sampled), and a Silent Auction. For more information about the

event visit rhonerangers.org. While winemakers tend to mostly drink their own wine, it is always interesting to ask what else they enjoy drinking at the moment. Like many of us wine enthusiasts, tastes can vary throughout the year. Chris shared that he is currently enjoying Assyrtiki, a Greek white variety from the island of Santorini. He is also a lover of those delicious German Rieslings. To taste the new winery with old roots, visit Broken Earth Winery located at 5625 Hwy 46 E. They are open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on weekends the tasting room is open at 10 a.m. For more information about winemaker, Chris Cameron, the historic vineyard and the Broken Earth wines, visit brokenearthwinery.com.

When winding along Vineyard Drive passing many of Paso Robles Far Out Wineries, youll notice Opolo Vineyards, with its grandeur entrance leading you through the Zinfandel vines and up to its rustic tasting room. Nestled amongst the rolling oaks, this barn-style tasting room allows the wines and friendly staff to showcase all the thrills you need to fall in love with Opolo. Wine Club manager Chance Hochschild encourages guests to come on weekends so you can really get a feel what Opolo is all about: Fun! The large bar allows the winery to accommodate all groups of friends, the wood-burning stove and BBQ on the patio make for a great lunch date (with a wine pairing, of course!), and even chat it up with one of Opolos owners, who are never ones to miss out on the festivities. Perhaps one of the winerys most unique features is the walking trails they offer. Not only does Opolo allow guests to roam through the actual vines, they encourage it! Three trails were made throughout the property that vary in degree of difficulty, but all with outstanding views of the vineyard. Two of these trails feature picnic areas at the top, and be sure to look out for owls and other wildlife on your way up. If your legs are already stretched out from a day of wine tasting, then not to worry, Opolo has you covered! Hop on their 18seater golf cart and take a cruise up to the hilltop as your guide points out the surrounding areas and vines you are passing through. A golf cart ride through a vineyard to a hilltop picnic area? Thats Opolos style for a good time! Opolos 366 acres feature multiple vines that make more than 30 different types of wine, including their flagship Mountain Zinfandel. The sustainable winery was bought in 1995 by Camarillo neighbors, Rick Quinn and Dave Nichols, and they released their first vintage in 2001. They started with 2,000 cases per year, Opolo now produces around 45,000 cases per year, with Rick and Dave still incredibly hands on, from production to sales. Their passion for winemaking allows to them experiment and showcase the uniqueness that you can find in their blends. Opolo has not only made a name for itself with its award-winning wines, but it is also known as the go-to winery for events. They are most notably known for their Harvest Festival in October, which features their patio BBQ, live music, dancing and of course their infamous Grape Stomp Party. However, Opolo keeps the fun going all year long. This month they are hosting their annual Valentines Day Dinner on Saturday, February 9th at 6 p.m. which will showcase delectable food and wine pairing along with music and dancing. Tickets are $90 for wine club members and $110 for non-members and are sure to sell out. Next month, join Opolo as they celebrate the 12th Annual Zinfandel Festival Weekend as they hold their Winemaker Dinner on Friday, March 15th at 6:30 p.m. and their party on the patio throughout the rest of the weekend. You can make the weekend even more special by staying at The Inn @ Opolo, the breathtaking threebedroom home located on the property featuring a gourmet breakfast, luxurious suites and of course, wine. Opolos motto, Great times, award-winning wines its a happy combination! speaks true to the winery. When you come to Opolo, you are in for a good time. Quality Craft Beers from Figueroa Mountain Brewing Co.

This family-owned brewery started by Jim and Jaime Dietenhofer of Los Olivos, has been life-long dream in the making. Harnessing their Bavarian heritage the Dietenhofers wanted to create a craft brewery in the Santa Ynez Valley that focused on creating the highest quality beer and help add to a growing hop culture in the Central Coast. Utilizing the skill sets from award-winning head brewer A.J. Stoll and his brew team, Figueroa Mountain Brewing has been able to create a line-up of seven quality craft beers (soon to be more). The brew team has been able to earn multiple medals including three golds in a very short period of time (open since 2010). In addition to selling beer in draft and bottles on the open market, Figueroa Mountain Brewery has a tap room that puts the patrons a few feet away from the brewing action. Complete with a state-of-theart stainless brewing system, customers can enjoy the pint of beer that was made in the same room and epitomizes freshness. An experience that includes live music on Fridays, and a complete food and wine list. Beer lovers may also enjoy the Fig Mtn Beer truck complete with taps on the side ready to pour. The truck can be seen at a large list of events throughout the Central Coast. DESTINATION DRIVERS
BY MELISSA ChAVEz

DESTINATION DRIVERS You relax. We drive A better, smarter, safer way to tour and tatse. (805) 423-3176 | www.DestinationDrivers.com

The Paso Robles wine appellation has blossomed more than fivefold in just ten years, offering over 180 bonded wineries across 26,000 vineyard acres. Long famous for Cabernet, Zinfandel and Merlot wines, Rhne-lovers are also flocking to Paso Robles wineries for sassy and creative blends of Rhne-style varietals. Considering that wine flights may vary from three to eight tastes, it doesnt take long before consumption can impair ones ability to safely operate a vehicle. With the turn of a key, a law-abiding citizen with spotless driving records can endanger themselves and others. However, a convenient service in Paso Robles will do the driving for you, right from the comfort of your own vehicle. The Central Coast has nearly a million visitors a year, says Sean Pennington, of Destination Drivers. We wanted to offer a safe, affordable option to driving while wine tasting. Sean says his clientele are people who appreciate wine and various aspects of wine, but dont want to endanger the public enjoying their favorite pastime. You could be crossing paths with a mom bringing her kids home from school. Destination Drivers enables people to keep more money in their wallets by using their own vehicles. Hourly rates for up to six passengers are $35 with a required three-hour minimum. For seven to ten passengers, the price increases nominally to $45 per hour. Seans staff is also available for weddings, brewery tastings, concerts, sporting events, out-of-town transportation and more. Customers love it. We open doors for our clients, carry their purchases, take photos and provide lots of water, says Sean. Di Raimondos Italian Market & Cheese Shop is a favorite stop. They really pair well with the wines. Sean estimates that customers like to pace themselves and make a full day of their tours, visiting five to eight wineries in five or six hours. A favorite destination is Lago Giuseppe Cellars. The lakeside Templeton setting is canopied with live oaks, a waterfall and picturesque views. Sean will work with the event venue, including barrel tastes and a picnic lunch. They even have a Le Cordon Bleutrained chef for guests to enjoy the full experience in food and wine, adds Sean. With advance notice, Sean will also make special request arrangements. In all, Sean has 75 drivers available from San Diego to Oregon, and 35 in Paso Robles, who are very familiar with the roadways and area terrain. Most customers are from outside Paso Robles, but Sean hopes that local wine aficionados will be made aware of his option right in their own backyard. Vina Robles To Open Outdoor Amphitheatre

San Francisco based Prescient Entertainment, in partnership with AEG Live, has been selected as the exclusive promoter to book the inaugural concert season at the 3,300 seat Vina Robles Amphitheatre, which is set to open in summer 2013. The new state-of-the art boutique amphitheatre is located adjacent to Vina Robles Winerys existing Hospitality Center in the heart of Paso Robles wine country. The amphitheatre, nestled on a picturesque oak-dotted hillside, will feature a combination of tiered reserved seats, VIP boxes, and general admission lawn seating; offering a variety of ticket pricing options for concert-goers. VIP and season ticket holders will be able to immerse themselves in the full concert experience with access to luxury services including valet parking, VIP/artist reception area and first-class pre show dining options. The venue is scheduled to host 15 to 20 events a year between April and October beginning in midsummer of 2013. Opening day has not yet been scheduled. I am excited to partner with AEG Live and Vina Robles Winery to book our first of many seasons at this incredible new venue. says Lee Smith, President of Prescient Entertainment. The addition of booking the Vina Robles Amphitheatre was a natural fit for us because we already produce concerts in similar venues in both Northern and Southern California. Vina Robles will allow us to bring these same artists to Paso Robles as they travel between cities. General Manager, Tim Reed who has overseen the development of the project says, This facility represents a new high-water mark for entertainment on the Central Coast and will forever change the local concert-going experience. We look forward to working with Lee and his team to bring first class concerts to Paso Robles. The Vina Robles Amphitheatre will become the premier outdoor entertainment destination between Santa Barbara and the Bay Area. Vina Robles is located at 3700 Mill Road, Paso Robles, CA 93446 and is open daily from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Call (805) 227-4812 or visit www.vinarobles.com for more information.

Wine Tasting on the WEST SIDE of PASO ROBLES

CALCAREOUS
On Top Of The World (almost)
BY RAChEL ECkERT

Open daily 11 a.m.- 5 p.m. 3430 Peachy Canyon Road, Paso Robles CA 93446 (805) 239-0289 | www.calcareous.com

If being on top of a mountain, with 360 degree views of rolling hills and vineyards, beautiful vistas and grounds, sipping from a glass of your favorite varietal suits your mood, then Calcareous Winery is a must stop while touring through the Paso Robles wineries on the West Side. Its quite a ride getting there, but when you do, you can kick back and enjoy with soaring hawks. The tasting room of Calcareous, perched almost 2000 feet above sea level, with its high ceilings, stone floors covered with thick rugs and entire wall of glass lends itself to the sky high feel you got while driving up to it. The facility is impressive and very guest-friendly with a wonderful picnic area and bocce ball court. Calcareous opened in 2000 and was founded by Lloyd Messer and Dana Brown, (father and daughter) who came from Iowa, both with a background in wine distribution, and is now run by Dana and her sister Erika Messer. The 442 acre estate is on the west side of Paso Robles where the calcium rich soil, the climate and varietal selections form a unique combination. Because of this combination, Calcareous can produce Bordeaux, Rhone and Burgundy varietals simultaneously. The hilly terrain surrounding Calcareous is where almost all of the their grapes are harvested, though they do have some leases with other vineyards on the Westside as well as some family owned vineyards. But, all of the grapes come from Pasos Westside and are grown on the vein of limestone that runs through what is called Peachy Canyon. Because of this, each of the wines carries a distinctive character and style reminiscent of some of the French wine regions. The production of 10,000 cases of wine a year, including Bordeaux blends, Rhone blends, Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Zinfandel, keeps winemaker Jason Joyce busy along with his daily,

Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe

VILLA SAN JULIETTE VINEYARD & WINERY

Nestled in the hills of the northern reaches of Paso Robles is a passionate dream that is rapidly turning into a reality. Eight years ago, longtime friends and business partners, Ken Warwick and Nigel Lythgoe, chased down an amazing bottle of Paso Robles Cabernet Sauvignon and discovered an amazing wine community and a land that reminded them of their childhood home in Northern England. It wasnt long before they got excited about the prospect of owning their own vineyard and making wine. In the intervening eight years a beautiful villa has sprung up on the property and a flood of award winning wines have come flowing out of the winery. The meticulous 168 acre vineyard boasts 11 different varietals, their favorite of which is a Cabernet Sauvignon that rivals the bottle of wine they tasted so long ago. The location of the vineyard up in the hills of San Miguel is ideal for the fruit. Says Winemaker, Matt Ortman. The soil is not very deep and the vines have to work harder to produce the fruit. The vigor of the vine is controlled naturally by the soils and the results are exceptional grapes. Now distributed in 42 states and several countries, Villa San-Juliette is a dream come true. With national distribution established and the solid foundation of an outstanding vineyard, Ken and Nigel are building out their production facility and opening up their dream to the world. October of 2012 saw the opening of a wonderfully appointed tasting room that mirrors the grandeur of the wine and the dream. Boasting four acres of grounds and gardens, the Villa is a place to bask in the beauty of the wines and of the land. Visitors who ventures out into the San Miguel hills get their first glimpse of the Villa as they crest the first range of rolling hills. On arrival at the tasting room visitors are struck by the sheer beauty of the grounds and 14,000 square foot estate. Treated to the pleasant contrast between the opulence of the property and the welcoming and knowledgeable tasting room staff, visitors usually find themselves spending their afternoon taking in the wines, nibbling on small bites from the onsite commercial kitchen, and staring out at the amazing views. The tasting room is gorgeous and the wines are well worth the trip but youd be missing out on half the experience if you didnt take the time to stroll around the property. Villa San-Juliette is the perfect setting for whiling away a pleasant afternoon with family and friends.

Winemaker Matt Ortman

The tasting room is open daily from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Available for private events. 6385 Cross Canyons Road in San Miguel (805) 467-0014 | www.villasanjuliette.com

Grow Zinfully Wild Weekend In Paso Robles Wine Country

More than 130 Paso Robles Wine Country Wineries Set to Host Events Across the Region March 15-17
Paso Robles Wine Country will Grow Zinfully Wild the weekend of March 15-17. More than 130 Paso Robles wineries salute the regions heritage varietal with individual events ranging from barrel tastings, winemaker dinners, vineyard tours, laid-back barbecues, live music and much more. This three day celebration is a Zinfandel Weekend for wine enthusiasts to go bold, go brave and grow wild. Spring in Paso Robles Wine Country is a time to be reenergized, when the vines awake from dormancy and when days become noticeably longer, said Robert Nadeau of Nadeau Family Vintners. Grow Zinfully Wild Weekend comes at the perfect time of year when wine enthusiasts begin to shake off the winter blues and decide to head out and see what is new in wine country. Touring Paso Robles during the Grow Zinfully Wild Weekend is made simple with the mobile version of pasowine.com. Visitors are also encouraged to use their mobile phones to check in and post with @PasoRoblesWine on Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and Foursquare. This combined with the online Interactive Trip Planner will keep everyone up to date on all Zinfandel Weekend happenings while on the go, including first hand sharing of tips, activities, stories about the food and favorite wines encountered. While visiting Paso Robles, the wine community encourages everyone to practice the 4 Ss of Responsible Tasting: Swirl, Smell, Sip, and Spit. Always remember to designate a driver or utilize one of the numerous touring services available in Paso Robles Wine Country. Where to go WINE TASTING

Avila Beach is surrounded by gentle, sloping hills, which define the harbor from the landward side. Three piers define the look from the oceanside; two are open to the public. Guests enjoy leisurely strolls out over the water, and the pier-based restaurants, which always offer fresh seasonal seafood. Avila is also an active fishing harbor with many fresh fish markets offering live crab, and fresh seafood.

WINE COUNTRY THIS MONTH

AVANT TAPAS & WINE:

One Stop Wine Country
BY MIChAEL CERVIN

There is always live music from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. on Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights. 35 Industrial Way, Buellton CA (805) 686-4742 | www.avantwines.com

The Santa Ynez Valley is packed with wine tasting rooms and making your way around the region can be daunting. Whats needed for the wine lover is a spot with tons of hard-to-find wines which showcase the rich diversity of the area. The answer is Avant Tapas and Wine, which melds small-lot handcrafted wines with a terrific restaurant and showcasing the incredible foods from wine country. Avant is not located with a string of other tasting rooms in some fancy building, but rather its at the end of a cul-de-sac in a business park overlooking the Santa Ynez Mountains. That doesnt seem an obvious choice, but whats unusual about Avant is that its also a winemaking facility where dozens of local winemakers craft their best juice. Part restaurant, part wine tasting room, and part winemaking collaborative, its the ideal spot for a full meal, a light snack, a taste of wine or a bottle to share, or a place to buy a hard to find bottle for a gift. We offer 52 wines and guests can choose a taste, a half glass or a full glass, says Joe Padilla, proprietor. Many of the wines are rotated weekly so theres always something new and nearly 90 percent of all the wines served in Avant are made in the Terravant Wine Company, a custom crush facility, which you can see from the second story restaurant. Avant represents the only tasting room opportunity for many boutique wines which dont have their own tasting rooms so the wines you sample here you wont find anywhere else. Avant promotes a local centric ideal in terms of the wines - all wines you sample are from the Central Coast to their food. Avants classically trained culinary chef, Brooke Stockwell, a Santa Barbara native, creates new menu items each week along with her standard and very popular foods using locally grown and produced foods that pair with the wines from Avants collection. The major point of differentiation about us is that we have a full restaurant for guests to enjoy while they are wine tasting. We also offer two very unique wine clubs, Padilla says for those who seek out something unusual for their wine club choices. Or just shop for a bottle to take with you as Avant has a selection of over 150 different wines in their retail shop. Being a wine producing facility with two dozen wineries sharing the space, winemaking happens year round but the most action can be seen September through October during crush and there are a few different options to see it all first hand. Complimentary tours are offered daily at 11 a.m., 1 and 3 p.m. and special Barrel Tasting tours are offered for a $20 per person though reservations are required since youre able to sample wines not yet bottled, and, who knows, you might run into a winemaker on the production floor. We offer tours of the facility, winemakers visits, lots of music nights and other special events, says Padilla, a native Californian with more than 20 years of experience in both the wine and hospitality industries. When you visit Santa Barbara wine country make certain you schedule a stop at Avant. They are open daily for wine tasting from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. and lunch is offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., while dinner is served nightly from 5 to 9 p.m. with the exception of Friday and Saturday when they serve until 10 p.m. If you cant wait for dinner their Happy Hour Wine Tasting and Tapas will keep you happy from 3 to 5 p.m. daily.

Stolpman Vineyards
When Sashi Moorman and Tom Stolpman signed Stolpman Vineyards lease for production space at 1700 Industrial Way Unit B in Lompoc back in 2001 they would never have guessed people would drive all the way west on Highway 246 to visit wine tasting rooms in an industrial area in foggy Lompoc! Now, almost ten years later, as the largest tenant of the now famous Wine Ghetto, we decided it was time to join other wineries and share our state-of-the art production space with our loyal customers. In the midst of production, youll find the newest spot to taste the Stolpman line up! Relax while seated at our huge wooden table in our beautiful newly remodeled tasting room. Our extremely knowledgeable tasting room staff will explain both our organic estate vineyard methodology as well as all of our cool tools in Lompoc: refrigerated barrel rooms, small lot fermentors, new French puncheons, double sorting tables, and concrete tanks. Our 20 year passionate pursuit for quality has translated into sophisticated and concentrated new releases. We also like to show off our winerys history, often opening up library wines going back to the 1990s.

SOLVANG
Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure, February 16
The Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure will feature 30 of Santa Ynez Valleys high-quality, small-production winemakers, all pouring under one roof on February 16th, in Solvang. The new nonprofit festival follows on the heels of 2012s sold out Paso Robles Garagiste Festival, which hosted over 1,000 attendees, and will incorporate the festivals signature high quality wines, personal winemaker interaction and renegade spirit. In response to overwhelming demand and as part of our mission to bring attention to the best of the countrys small-lot, artisan winemakers we have expanded the festival a hundred miles south to Santa Ynez Valley, one of the most exciting garagiste regions in the country, said Garagiste Festival co-founder Doug Minnick. The Santa Ynez Valley is the perfect next location as we continue to expand the Garagiste Festival to expose more garagistes to even more wine consumers. Southern Exposure will benefit the Cal Poly Wine and Viticulture program. The Garagiste Festivals, produced by Garagiste Events, are the first and only festivals dedicated to discovering and promoting artisan garagiste winemakers and showcase high-quality, cuttingedge, small production, commercial wineries that produce fewer than 1,200 cases a year. The Paso Robles Garagiste Festival was named one of the Top Nine Incredible Epicurean Vacations in the world by ABC News. With our Southern Exposure festival, we are thrilled to bring closer access to these remarkable artisan winemakers for our broad audience in Southern California, continued Minnick. It is no secret that the garagiste movement is on fire, and we are proud to be part of the kindling for it! The Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure takes place at the beautiful, Mission-style Veterans Memorial Hall in the heart of Solvang. The one-day festival begins at 11 a.m. with the seminar The Ultimate Barrel Tasting Oak Flavors Tasted and Explained. Winemaker and vineyard owner Michael Larner, of the renowned Larner Vineyard, and winemaker Ryan Render, of Rendarrio Vineyards and cooperage Tonnellerie Saint Martin, bring their knowledge of viticulture, winemaking, and barrels to the table in this special comparison barrel tasting of wines made by McPrice Myers from the Larner Vineyard. Attendees will learn (and taste) how different oak treatments from type to region to toast can affect the finished product and change the profile of a single wine. Among the outstanding winemakers already slated to pour at the Southern Exposure festival are Autonom, Baehner Fournier Vineyards, Blair Fox Cellars, Casa Dumetz, Center of Effort, Deovlet Wines, El Rey Wines, Frequency Wines, Ground Effect Wines, J. Wilkes Wines, Kaena Wine Co., Kessler-Haak Wines, La Fenetre Wines, Larner Winery, Luminesce, Nagy Wines, Native9 Wine, Pench Rance, Piedrasassi, Refugio Ranch, Roark Wine Co., Ryan Cochrane Wines, Shai Cellars, Storm Wines, Tercero Wines and Transcendence Wines, with more to come. Key sponsors for the The Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure include Chumash Casino Resort, Hotel Corque and the Wandering Dog Wine Bar. For tickets and more information on The Garagiste Festival: Southern Exposure, go to www.garagistefestival.com.

2 for 1 Tasting with this ad

Santa Maria is a bit of a difficult place to describe to Pinot-philes who havent been there. Its basically a cowboy town full of ranchers and farmers and big, manly trucks. Lots of cowboy hats, cowboy boots and big belt buckles. Not exactly not the backdrop most imagine of when daydreaming about wine country, especially that of the refined Pinot Noir. Nevertheless, the Santa Maria Valley produces bar none, some of the finest Pinot Noirs that the entire state of California has to offer. You just have to come to grips with the image of cowboys and an open fire grill lined with sizzling beef in your fantasy. One such cowboy figure is Bob Torres. Torres family has been in Santa Barbara Countys Santa Maria Valley for over 100 years. A local legend himself since he opened his first Pappys restaurant in 1957, Bob is an old-school Santa Maria guy, with the cowboy hat, cowboy boots and belt buckle to prove it. He loves this land. Bob planted five acres of vines on his Santa Maria estate in 2000. The quality of the fruit was recognized immediately, and Caymus Chuck Wagner snatched up all he could get. In 2006 Torres bottled under his own label Toretti Family Vineyard. Forget the images of cowboy country when you enter their newly opened Los Olivos tasting room. It has a relaxed cowboy atmosphere and reflects their rich family history. Bobs daughter, Milena manages the tasting room and will welcome you with a warm. Taste this Pinot. It is sexy, stylish and chic. Boasting toasty new oak and made in a big style, Toretti wines are a striking wine of class and modern elegance. Visit the family at 2933 San Marcos Avenue, Suite 101. Visit their website, Toretti.com for more about their wines.

Now open, every day from 11 am to 5 pm. 2367 Alamo Pintado Avenue, Los Olivos 888-938-7310 www.byronwines.com No appointment necessary. Please call ahead for parties of 8 or more.

LOS OLIVOS
Coquelicot Estate Vineyard
COQUELICOT (ko-klee-ko) is the name en Franais of the striking red poppy flower that graces the French countryside, as well as all the labels on Coquelicot wines. The 58-acre vineyard is an organically farmed property in the heart of the Santa Ynez Valley. Sustainable farming and gentle, meticulous winemaking techniques converge to produce handmade, limited-production wines that are a true celebration of life. Michael Larner, Coquelicots winemaker, has been a viticulturist in the Santa Ynez Valley, California for the past 15 years. He received a MS degree from the Department of Viticulture & Enology at UC Davis in 2005 and previously earned a BS in geology at the University of Colorado, Boulder. He has traveled to three continents for wine apprenticeships and has worked for E. Guigal in Ampuis, France (the Rhne Valley), Marchesi Antinori at the Guado al Tasso estate in Bolgheri (coastal Tuscany) and various estates in the Santa Ynez Valley (California) and Australia. Thanks to those international experiences and his language ability (he speaks French and Italian), Michael is often asked to judge at trade fairs and wine competitions. He has done so regularly at Italy's biggest wine competition, the Concorso Enologico Internazionale in Verona, and the California State Wine Expo. Michael is an active member of the Santa Barbara Vintners' Association and is a founding architect of the proposed Ballard AVA (in Santa Barbara) that would distinguish this wine territory as one of the best in California. Michaels international wine experience contributes to Coquelicots dynamic wine portfolio by fusing old world techniques with modern winemaking expressions. Since Michael believes winemaking starts in the vineyard, a focus on quality crafted estate wines is paramount in all wines produced.
