It was presented in Berlin in November 2012 and in Alexandria and Cairo in December 2012. In 2013 / 2014 it will travel to other cities. www.alexandria-streets-project.net
ALEXANDRIA STREETS PROJECT
A Sonic Map of Alexandria
The starting point and the basis of the “Alexandria Streets Project”. In October 2012, the Berlin based curators and sound artists Berit Schuck and Julia Tieke visited Alexandria in order to explore the city’s hidden structures, invisible places and imaginary ones, reflecting on Alexandria’s past, present and future. They met residents from all backgrounds: political activists, architects and urban planners, musicians, writers, booksellers, passers-by, a minibus driver, taxi drivers, Alexandrians who live abroad and Alexandrians who live on the city’s edges. Based on these encounters, they started to collect field recordings, interviews and found footage, then set up an acoustic archive, edited the material and created twenty audio tracks for twenty spots all over the city. The sonic map went visual on the project’s bilingual website (Arabic / English) and poster-flyers. “A Sonic Map of Alexandria” was first published on 29 November 2012.
Mini Radio Academy
Hands-on workshops, a networking event and a platform for the creation of new radio formats. Parallel to the production of the sonic map, Berit Schuck and Julia Tieke curated a three-day workshop programme called “Mini Radio Academy”. Held in collaboration with Radio Tram, Alexandria’s first independent online radio, the concept of the “Mini Radio Academy” was to explore the potentiality of radio and audio (art) in Alexandria and Egypt in general. The workshops were open to the public and invited the participants to develop new talk show formats, practise critical journalism and examine the role of radio and audio (art) in public places. The programme was led by experienced journalists from Cairo and Alexandria and culminated in a discussion about Egypt’s radio landscape of governmental, commercial and independent radio stations with a focus on independent radio making. The “Mini Radio Academy” took place between 18 – 20 October 2012 at the Goethe-Institut Alexandria. A new edition is planned for 2013 / 2014.
Public Listening Events
An investigation of the relation between documentary audio art and potential audiences, a laboratory of ideas on how to present audio works in public. The project’s series of public listening events started with a talk in Berlin focused on radio politics, continued with a presentation of the sonic map within the exhibition “Right-To-Left” curated by EPS51 and Uqbar e.V., and ended with an open house and public listening event at Goethe-Institut Alexandria. The next listening event was a remix concert at 100COPIES Music Space for which DJ Ismail Hosny (Wetrobots) composed a techno-style 20-minute audio track from “A Sonic Map of Alexandria”. Future events may include live performances where Alexandrian words and voices meet foreign discourses and languages, radio shows in public space, audio-visual exhibitions of the webpage or audio walks in Alexandria and beyond.
