INT. APARTMENT - DAY JARED, (late 20’s), is still waking up. The sun beats down outside. He sets his PHONE down on the kitchen table and brings up his home screen. ONE NEW MESSAGE: EMELIE EMELIE (O.S.)(PHONE MESSAGE) Hey Jared, it’s Emelie. (sighs) I-- I don’t think we should see each other anymore. My-- my mom and dad just died and -- it’s just this whole big thing now -- it’s going to be taking up a lot of my time, you know? Anyway... I hope we can still be friends. (pause) It’s just not the right time, you know? Anyway, I’m sorry, Jared. I meant everything I ever said to you. Okay? You understand, don’t you? Anyway... goodbye, Jared. She hangs up and Jared sets the spoon down from his mouth and SIGHS. He pushes his cereal bowl away from him. Jared stands and looks out his window and see’s DEAD PEOPLE being lined up on the sidewalk. He picks up his phone and QUICK DIALS: Hey Jared. KYLE (O.S.)(ON THE PHONE)
JARED Hey, Kyle. Emelie just broke up with me over the phone. On a message. KYLE (O.S.) (ON THE PHONE) (heavy sigh) I’m so sorry, dude. It’s okay. You sure? JARED KYLE
JARED Um, no, but... I mean, I can’t really do anything about it. So... KYLE You wanna come over? Have some beers? No. JARED
KYLE You want me to come over there? JARED No, I have to go to work soon. KYLE They’re still having you come in? Even with all the -JARED Yeah, even with all the -- it’s really ridiculous, there hasn’t been anything in since last week, anyway. It’s -BEEP BEEP and Jared looks at his phone. JARED (CONT’D) It’s my mom, I better take this. KYLE Hey, are you wearing your mask? JARED Yeah, dude, of course I am! Jared LOOKS at the MASK on the other side of the kitchen table. JARED (CONT’D) I gotta go. I’ll call you later. Later. KYLE
They hang up and Jared takes the other call. Hey, Mom. JARED
MOM Jared, are you wearing your mask? The news said that if you don’t wear your mask, even inside, sweetheart, that you can contaminate your lungs. JARED Yes, I’m wearing my mask, of course I’m wearing my mask. MOM So you got my package? There were three masks in there and I marked them all with your name on the inside, just in case you loose one. JARED I’m not going to loose one, Mom, it’ll be on my face. MOM BE on your face? Are you wearing your mask? JARED I’m wearing my mask, Mom! I already told you that! MOM I just want you to be safe, is all. JARED Mom, Emelie broke up with me today. MOM Oh, sweetie. I’m sorry to hear that. I liked her, she was good for you. (beat) Is she wearing her mask? JARED I’m sure she is. MOM Jared, I’m sorry to hear about you and Emelie, but I have to go. I think... oh no.... I’ll call you back, okay? (beat) Wear your mask!
She hangs up. Jared sips steaming coffee out of his mug and stares out of the window. Below TWO PLAIN CLOTHES MEN carry the dead out of the building and LAY THEM ON THE STREET carefully. He glances at his mask. He looks back out of the window and see’s one of the Plain Clothes Men starring up at him, sweat on his forehead. PLAIN CLOTHES You know you could help us out! Jared gestures to himself. “Me?” JARED I’m sorry, I can’t hear you through the glass! PLAIN CLOTHES You could help us out! JARED Oh... no! Thank you, but no! The Plain Clothes Man FLIPS HIM OFF and walks back inside. His phone RINGS again and he answers. DAVID Dude, where the hell are you? JARED I’m sorry, Dave, I’m just running late. DAVID You were supposed to be here, like, an hour ago. What are you doing? JARED I’m... it’s just that my mom called me... and Emelie just broke up with me. Over a phone message... it’s this whole big thing now... (beat) Are you sure you even need me today?
DAVID Are you kidding me! I’ve got those tickets! JARED Oh, right, the... yeah... the tickets. You’re still going to that? DAVID Hell yeah I’m going! I got the tickets! JARED Did you bother to check to see if they’ve cancelled the thing? You know, ‘cause of the -DAVID Yes, I’ve already checked, and yes, they’re still doing the thing, so get your goddamn ass down here and relieve me so I can go to this! (beat) I’ve got tickets! Jared gives a heavy sigh. JARED Alright. I’ll be down in just a bit. They hang up. QUICK SHOTS OF: putting pants on. Sipping coffee. Putting his work shirt and tie on. Sipping coffee. Sitting at the kitchen table reading over old texts. Putting shoes on. Sipping coffee. Looking at the mask. Sipping coffee. Brushing his teeth. Sipping coffee. His phone rings again. EMELIE. He sighs, brow furrowed and picks up. JARED (CONT’D) Hey, Emelie. EMELIE Hey, Jared. What’s up? JARED
EMELIE Did you get my message? JARED (sighs) Yeah, I got your message. EMELIE I’m really sorry, Jared. You know I love you, right? Do you? JARED
EMELIE Yes, of course. JARED Then why’d you break up with me over a phone message? EMELIE Because I’m scared. JARED Are you okay? EMELIE Yeah, I’m fine, I think. I’m wearing my mask. Are you wearing your mask? Your Mother just called me and told me that it sounded like you weren’t wearing your mask today. BEEP BEEP. A new call comes in. KYLE JARED Can you hold on a sec? Yeah. EMELIE
Jared flips over and takes Kyle’s call. Hey, dude. JARED
KYLE Hey, dude, you’re mom just called me.
JARED Yes, I’m wearing my fucking mask! Jared looks over at his mask on the kitchen table. KYLE So, are you coming over later or what? JARED I don’t know... KYLE Okay, I’ll see you in a bit, then. JARED I -- I can’t. I have to go to work. Dave has these tickets to this thing... I don’t even know... it’s this whole big thing... KYLE Dude, just come over. Party with me. End of the World Party, you know? Jared looks at his watch. JARED It’s 3:30 in the morning. Who’re you partying with at 3:30 in the morning?! KYLE Just... it’s just me, I guess. Until you come over, then we’ll be two! JARED I just can’t get used to the light being out at 3:30 in the morning. BEEP BEEP. A new call. EMELIE JARED (CONT’D) Oh, shit! I forgot about Emelie. Can you hold on a sec? KYLE Oooo.... She call you or did you call her?
JARED Just... hold on a sec. (short beat) She called me. Kyle laughs uncontrollably until he’s cut off as --- Jared flips over and takes Emelie’s call. JARED (CONT’D) I’m sorry! Kyle wants me to come over. He’s throwing this End of the World party. You want to go? EMELIE (crying) No, I don’t think I want to go anywhere right now. JARED What’s wrong? EMELIE Jared, I’m sick. A LONG PAUSE as the info sinks in. What? JARED
EMELIE I was wearing my mask when I went to sleep last night and when I woke up it was pushed down. It was off, Jared, and I don’t know for how long. Jared thinks about it. JARED Are you okay? EMELIE No, I don’t think so. Jared looks back outside. More BODIES have been put outside. JARED You’re sick? Yeah. EMELIE
JARED I’m coming over. EMELIE No! You might get sick, too! JARED It’s okay, I’m coming over! EMELIE I don’t want you to see me like this. JARED I want to be with you right now. You shouldn’t be alone. (beat/sigh) It happens fast. At least that’s what I’ve heard. EMELIE I’m already alone. JARED Yeah. But you don’t have to be. A PAUSE. Okay. EMELIE
JARED I’m on my way. Jared hangs up and throws on his jacket, grabs his keys, grabs his wallet, name tag, and grabs an ENERGY DRINK from his empty fridge. STAY ON MASK as Jared walks out of the kitchen and gets ready to leave. He quickly comes back and grabs it and walks back off. INT. STAIRCASE - MOMENTS LATER Jared calls Kyle. JARED Hey, Kyle. I can’t come over today, okay? Maybe tomorrow? Fine... KYLE
KYLE No you’re not. Are you going over to Emelie’s? Yeah. JARED
KYLE Your Mom called me again. Jesus... You okay? JARED KYLE
JARED Ask me again tomorrow. KYLE Ha! Okay. I’ll talk to you later. They hang up and just as soon Jared’s MOM calls. Hey Mom. JARED
MOM Your Father’s dead, Jared. Shit. JARED
Jared stops in the staircase and leans against the wall, finally sitting on a step, resting his head against the wall. MOM Are you there? Yes. JARED
MOM Are you wearing your mask, son? Jared looks down at the mask in his hand. JARED Yeah, I’m wearing my mask. I promise.
MOM I love you, Jared. JARED I love you too, Mom. (sighs) Are you okay? ... no. MOM
MOM (CONT’D) Mom, I’m sorry, I have to call you back, okay? I promise. MOM (CONT’D) Can you come over soon? I want you to see your Father before they take him away. JARED Yeah. I’ll be over soon. Jared gets a TEXT. He looks down. EMELIE. The text says: “Are you coming over???” Jared texts back quickly: “Be there in a sec. My dad died. It’s this whole big thing... be there soon.” MOM Can you hear me? Yes. JARED
MOM Come home soon. I want you to see him before they burn him. Jared sighs. MOM (CONT’D) I’ll let you go. JARED I’ll be there soon. MOM Wear your mask! They hang up.
Jared looks down at the MASK in his hand, sets his energy drink down on the step and FINALLY puts his mask on. INT. APARTMENT LOBBY - MOMENTS LATER Jared, mask on, pushes past crowds of people in the lobby, pushing past workers bringing out the dead. EXT. APARTMENT - MOMENTS LATER He makes his way out into the SUNLIGHT, soaking it in. His eyes squint. Jared looks at the bodies lined up on the ground. Each is covered with a cover, a coat, sheet, newspaper, anything they can find. A TEXT from EMELIE: “I just coughed up blood :( “ Jared looks at the text and his eyes show it all. Sorrow. Jared looks at the workers bring out more bodies. He finally makes the decision. He TAKES off his mask, closes his eyes and takes in a long deep inhale. CUT TO BLACK: TITLES
