APPLICATION OF S.M.T.INFANT MASSAGE TECHNIQUE
Parents are not only guardians or teachers to their children but they also need to have basic knowledge of health care for them to recognize the ailments or pain their infants are facing. They also need to know basic treatment and diagnosis of their infants. This is necessary to ease the infant’s pain before receiving proper treatment from the doctor. This chapter explains the application of infant massage technique. The application of this massage technique must be studied thoroughly in order to make treatment safe and effective. The massage treatment must be done with caution and care because the infant’s body structure is soft and fragile. Therefore, all procedures and steps of massaging must be followed and obeyed to avoid any unnecessary incident.

● APPLICATION OF SMT TECHNIQUE ●

By practicing the technique over and over again, I guarantee that you will be able to manipulate it in the proper and correct manner. Hand exercises or manipulation of the limb shall be taught so that the hand is always soft and subtle during the process of manipulation or massaging.

MASSAGE EFFECTS
The effect of this massage is that there is a complete circle of energy change. Starting from potential energy i.e: load or weight on the body tissues to kinetic energy i.e: from massaging movement. This kinetic energy changes to chemical energy when the nervous system in the tissues is stimulated. These nerves will then release certain chemical substances according to the functions of the cells. This activates magnetic points and the structure changes into magnetic energy or electromagnet. The situation causes the weakened and injured cells to produce the same energy as the potential energy (load) given outside and thus the balance inside and outside the cell is achieved. Electromagnetic energy is capable to bear the obstacle (load) or threat (injury and pain) from outside the cell through the process of interchanging charges. This process makes the cells or tissues stronger than normal and enables them to withstand pain or injury.

MASSAGE FORCE
Force here means weight or pressure given on the parts or area being massaged. For example: you wish to massage the infant’s abdomen, you have to calculate the pressure or force needed. In massaging infants, the force or pressure used in the massage must be controlled so that the force or pressure will not harm the area massaged. Therefore, I conclude that the pressure given should not exceed 1kg. You can measure this using a weighing scale. Practice this by putting your hand on the scale for a few times, starting form 0.3kg. Gradually move to 0.6kg and finally to 0.9kg. Feel the difference in pressure (weight) so that you can then apply treatment to the infant.

● APPLICATION OF SMT TECHNIQUE ●

If you have no weighing scale, you can practice to feel the pressure (weight) using a sponge. Feel the difference in pressing a sponge with water (0.3kg), a dry sponge (0.6kg) and a sponge with oil (0.9kg). Force is dependent on the treatment area. If and when treating areas close to the joints or bones, the pressure given should be lighter i.e: 0.1kg to 0.3kg. Nevertheless, if there is space or cavity near the treatment area, pressure given is usually around 0.3 kg to 0.6 kg. For areas with big muscles like the thigh, buttocks and upper limbs, the force given is usually around 0.6kg to 0.9 kg.

MEDIUM OF MASSAGE

The medium of massage is the mean or object used on the massaged surface to reduce friction and to ease the movement in massaging. An example of the medium commonly used is massage oil. For infants, the massage oil used need not necessarily be hot because the infant’s skin is very sensitive to temperature changes. You can easily find massage oil in pharmacies or health centres. I would suggest to choose massage oil that is neither too thick nor full of aroma and scents.

Apart from massage oil, you can also use lotion or gel suggested for massage or health treatment. To me, the use of lotion is more practical especially in areas with cavities. This is because the moist lotion reduces friction in an optimum way during massage. Another medium which is seldom used but good for massage is the talcum powder. The dry and soft talcum powder reduces friction mainly in areas with bones such as the waist, shoulder and knees.

S.M.T TECHNIQUE
In infant massage, I have improvised the SMT Technique to be precise and simple to use. It has to be compatible to the physical condition of the infant which is small and tender. The force given should be evenly spread and optimized accordingly to their physique. There are three zones that are suitable for massaging infants i.e: a) Zone 1-Fingertips i.e: thumb, index, middle and ring finger. b) Zone 2 -Middle part of the fingers i.e: the thumb, index and middle finger c) Zone 3 - The palm and base of the thumb.

These zones are divided accordingly to the appropriate treatment of different surface areas and electromagnetic structures. Zone 1 is suitable for treating electromagnetic points and isolated areas. For example, at the base of the ear and under the chin. Zone 2 is suitable for treating electromagnetic rings and spherical surfaces like the ankle and upper parts. Zone 3 is suitable for treating electromagnetic lines and bony areas. For example, the back part of the body, shoulders and knees. For each zone, I have further broken down to several suitable techniques during manipulation or massage.

Technique No. 1 (The Iguana technique) This technique uses the zone 1 technique. Treatment surface areas are the tip of the thumb, index, middle and ring fingers. This technique can be applied in four different ways. They are: Application 1
• • This application uses the tip of the thumb. Suitable in treating electromagnetic points and hard and narrow surfaces. Minimum force is from 0.6kg up to 0.9kg. Medium of massage is massage oil.

• •

Application 2
• This application uses the tip of the index finger. Suitable for treating electromagnetic points and hard and narrow surfaces. Minimum force is from 0.3kg up to 0.9kg. Medium of massage is lotion.

Application 3
• This application uses the tips of both thumb and the index finger. Suitable for treating electromagnetic points on the thigh and lower arm. Medium of massage is massage oil.

Application 4
• This application uses the tip of the index finger, middle finger and the ring finger. Suitable for treating electromagnetic lines on the head and chest. Minimum force is from 0.1kg up to 0.3kg. Medium of massage is talcum powder.

Technique No. 2 (The Eagle technique) This technique uses the Zone 2 structure. The area of treatment is the surface area of the middle part of the middle finger, the index finger and the thumb. There are two different applications for this technique. Application 1
• This application uses the middle surface area and side of the index finger and thumb. Suitable for treating electromagnetic rings on the body. Minimum force is from 0.3kg up to .06kg. Medium of massage is massage oil.

Application 2
• This application uses the middle surface area of the index finger and the middle finger. Suitable for treating electromagnetic rings in the thigh, shoulder and neck. Minimum force is from 0.6kg up to 0.9kg. Medium of massage is massage oil.

This application uses the centre of the palm. Suitable for treating electromagnetic lines especially on the back bone (spine). Minimum force is from 0.1kg up to 0.3kg. Medium of massage is talcum powder.

Application 2
• • This application uses the base of the thumb. Suitable for treating electromagnetic lines on the cartilage and bones like the front of the neck. Minimum force is from 0.1kg up to 0.3kg. Medium of massage is lotion.

TIPS ON HOW TO START MASSAGING
There are several steps to be taken to ensure your infant is in a comfortable condition during massage.
Tip 1 : Mother should ensure that infant is not hurt, bleeding, swelling, infected with skin disease, blood clotting disease like hemophilia and all other fatal diseases before massage takes place. (Please refer to your doctor) Tip 2 : Infant must be in a healthy and happy mood. Do not massage if infant is not well. Tip 3 : Massage may begin one hour after meal or preferably before meal. Tip 4 : Make sure that infant’s skin is not allergic to medium (oil, lotion, talcum powder) Tip 5 : Ensure that massage space and place is clean, safe and in comfortable condition. Tip 6 : Ensure mother’s finger nails are short and free from infection. Tip 7 : Wash and cleanse hands with warm water before touching your infant. Tip 8 : Do some light hand exercises like stretching the fingers, the wrist and some heavy exercises like gripping small rubber ball repeatedly to flex your hands and fingers.
