When he sees the signs of death, illness and old age, he will renounce the kin gdom and embark on the greatest of all quests. KING SUDDHODANA: What do you say! We are the noble Warrior caste! He is my first son, he must follow me as king! Be gone, all of you. The sages leave. Queen Pajapati turns to the King. QUEEN PAJAPATI: Suddhodana, dear -The arrogant Priest steps in between them. An angry King Suddhodana marches around the gardens, which are normal in appeara nce. The ROYAL MINISTER, 40, and many servants struggle to keep up with the King . KING SUDDHODANA: Look at this mess, dead leaves, dead flowers, dead branches. He spots a dead branch and rips it off. KING SUDDHODANA: Get rid of it, all of it! Siddhartha must never see any of this ! MINISTER: Sire, he's only a baby now. The King throws the branch at the Minister. KING SUDDHODANA: And baby's have eyes to see! MINISTER: Forgive me, Sire. KING SUDDHODANA: Every morning the servants must clean the gardens. And Siddhart ha must never be allowed out of the Palace grounds. King Suddhodana turns to the timid servants. KING SUDDHODANA: Now! Get on with it! The servants hurry around removing all signs of decay. KING SUDDHODANA: Siddhartha must not see any sign of death! Do you hear me! MINISTER: Yes, Sire.
INSERT - TEN YEARS LATER EXT. FOOD MARKETS - DAY Stalls loaded. The Royal Minister strolls past CUSTOMERS who huddle around the F RUIT MERCHANT. FRUIT MERCHANT: They say he's better looking than the King. CUSTOMER: Too bad we never get to see him.
EXT. HOUSE CONSTRUCTION - DAY A YOUNG MAN hands mortar to an OLDER WORKER. OLDER WORKER: I hear he's very bright. But the Sages can only teach him what the King and the Priest approve. EXT. WOODED HERMITAGE AREA - DAY Kondanna stands tall as a younger sage friend, VAPPA, 30, sits. Kondanna's eyes sparkle. KONDANNA: With the thirty-two marks of a Great Man, he's gifted beyond all, a jo y and honor for me to teach. And when the predictions come true, we will be his humble students, he will be our great teacher.
INT. ARMY STABLES - DAY Two SOLDIERS dress their horses. OFFICER: Fast? I saw him run, faster than a horse. SOLDIER: I'd run fast, too, right out of the palace if I was locked up for ten y ears.

Siddhartha stretches his lead over Channa. He runs into a bear hug of the exuber ant King, though Siddhartha's face shows boredom rather than joy. An occasional servant slinks in the background removing decaying vegetation, now and in all outdoor Palace scenes. KING SUDDHODANA: Well done, Son, worthy of a prince! SIDDHARTHA: Father, can I ever race other boys? KING SUDDHODANA: One day, son, one day. Channa picks up a light coat, hands it to Siddhartha. CHANNA: Your coat, Lord. SIDDHATTA: Thank you, Channa. But, Father -KING SUDDHODANA: Now don't you worry, time for some food and dancing girls. Everyone strides to horses, yet Siddhatta lags behind, looking wistfully across the oval. before. Ruchi wears a highly colorful, blue, yellow and white outfit. SIDDHARTHA: Who are you? RUCHI: Ruchi. Come on, see if you can beat me. Ruchi runs ten yards, stops, grins at Siddhartha. RUCHI: Bet I win. Siddhartha laughs, charges after Ruchi. SIDDHARTHA: Ha! They dash into the forest. Ruchi jumps over small boulders and logs, shrieking w ith laughter. He darts left, darts right. EXT. HIGH PALACE WALL - DAY Siddhartha stealthily creeps next to the sheer smooth wall. Ruchi follows him. SIDDHARTHA: I'll show you my favorite tree. It's where I go outside. Be careful so no one sees us. RUCHI: But the walls are impossible to climb. SIDDHARTHA: I don't really go outside, but I get to see outside. They reach a Mango tree twenty feet in from the wall. SIDDHARTHA: Here. Siddhartha hoists himself up branch by branch. Ruchi stays on the ground. RUCHI: Siddhartha, be careful, it's not safe. And what if the Priest or your fat her sees you?
