Black History Month got its start in a college fraternity. Carter Woodson, the son of former slaves and the second black American to receive a degree from Harvard University, urged the Omega Psi Phi fraternity to create Negro History and Literature Week in February. Woodson went on to found the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History, through which he provided cities and communities materials for black history activities and events. In the 1970s, amid the Black Power Movement, the association changed Negro History Week to Black History Month.

PARENTS & STUDENTS . . . Just a friendly reminder, Franklin County School does not accept outside deliveries of Valentine Flowers/Gifts to students.
However, there are two school fundraisers you may participate in.

♥♥Long Stem Roses- Take Stock in Children: ♥♥Valentine Grams- Junior Class:

All grade levels- $2/Rose or $22/ Dozen. Delivery to Student- $1. Personalized card to go with rose- $1. Delivery on 2/14/13 during 6th period. For Middle & High school students only- $1per Candy Gram Delivery on 2/14/13 during breakfast & lunch.

They will play at S. Walton against Port St. Joe at 8:00pm EST.


**Track & Weight-lifting: Practice immediately after school on Mondays through Thursdays. **Animal Shelter Donations: The third grade classes are collecting supplies for the Franklin County Animal
Shelter. The following is a list of the supplies they need: dog treats, dog toys (hard rubber), kitty litter, cat toys, and cleaning supplies. Each class has a donation box setup in their room- Mr. Boyd, Mrs. Cathy Creamer, Mrs. Ford and Mrs. Schaffer.

MCKAY SCHOLARSHIP: The McKay Scholarship was established in 2000. This program was designed to
parents of students with disabilities to choose the best educational setting—public or private—for their child. Who is eligible? •Students who have an Individual Education Plan (IEP) or a 504 Accommodation Plan (for more than 6 months) and meet the following requirements: •The student spent the prior school year in attendance at a Florida public school during the preceding October and February FTE surveys in Pre-K through grade 12, or •The student spent the prior school year in attendance at the Florida School for the Deaf and the Blind during the preceding October and February FTE surveys in kindergarten through 12, or •The student received specialized instructional services under the Voluntary Prekindergarten (VPK) Education Program during the previous school year, or •The student is a dependent child of a member of the United States Armed Forces who transfers to Florida from out of state due to a parent’s permanent change of station orders What are the options? •Request a different public school that follows your district’s choice policy •Request a public school in an adjacent school district that has space and provides the services contained in student’s IEP or 504 Plan •Receive a scholarship for your child to attend a participating private school Where do I go for more information? **KidCare & Medicaid Application Assistance: There is a Community Health Worker, Jo Ethridge at the Franklin County Health Department in Apalachicola on every Thursday from 8:00 am – 4:00 pm. She will be at the Franklin County Annex (Carrabelle Clinic) on Tuesday, January 15 & Wednesday, January 23. Ms. Etheridge is available to assist families with applying for KidCare as well as Medicaid. Come in to see her. You can also reach her at (850)624-3640. No appointment is necessary. Apalachicola Community Services Center also has someone to help with applying for services such as Medicaid, KidCare, and food & cash assistance. James Rutherford can assist you at the center. It is located at 192 14th Street, Apalachicola, FL. They are open from 9:00 am to 4:00 pm Monday thru Friday. Appointments are scheduled from 9:00 am to 3:00 pm Monday thru Friday. The Franklin County Adult Education Courses will be offering GED classes at the Franklin County School in the near future. The next GED Test will be given Feb. & 5, 2012 at the Franklin County School library at 6:00pm. To register for the test or for classes, contact Maxine Creamer @ 670-4481.
