Effective sensing requires accurate. For this reason MSA manufactures and assembles its own sensors which ensures complete compatibility with the signal processing equipment. stable and fast-response sensors to achieve good quality and reliable signals. a very wide range of sensing technologies is necessary. Many of these technologies have been developed by MSA and are being continually improved to meet increasing market requirements. Infrared Open Path and the Point Technology from MSA use electronicallymodulated IR radiation sources at two different wavelengths. The absorption spectrum is distinctive for each gas in question.
. The signals from both detectors are electronically amplified and fed into a microprocessor that conditions the signals and produces an output signal proportional to the gas concentration. To achieve the best possible results. One wavelength is typical for the gas to be measured.
Infrared [ Open Path & Point ]
Many gases absorb infrared light at certain wavelengths.Sensors
[ Safety starts with the sensor ]
Sensors play a vitally important role in all gas detection systems. while there is no infrared absorption by atmospheric gases for the other wavelength.
The ionization potential of the UV light is a specific value for the gas of interest. A current is generated and is transformed into a signal proportional to the concentration of the gas.2 µm and the thermal radiation is measured with a second IR sensor. Electrodes separated by electrolytes are enclosed in a small plastic housing and are connected to an external electronic circuit. however. Subjected to an electrical field.Sensor Technologies

PID [ PhotoIonization Detection ] EChem
The gas sample is drawn into the measuring chamber by an integral pump and ionized by UV light.
A hydrocarbon flame contains a large amount of CO2 gas. This CO2 is selectively measured with an IR sensor at a wavelength of 4.
. The flicker frequency is measured with a third IR sensor. in order to prevent false alarms such as those caused by solar radiation. Since the rate of gas entry into the sensor is controlled by diffusion of the gas through the permeable membrane. This design of the flame detector can detect a 30 x 30 cm pan fire at a distance of up to 60 metres within a cone of vision of 90° horizontally and 90° vertically. they move to the electrodes. Gas diffuses into the sensor through a permeable membrane and a small current is generated by an electrochemical reaction. Gas molecules are separated into ions [RH+] and electrons [e–].
Electrochemical sensors are typically used to detect toxic gases in the ppm range. the current is proportional to the gas concentration.
Photo-acoustic sensor technology was developed by MSA for the detection of toxic or combustible gases at very low concentrations. The sensor consists of a pair of matched elements [PELEMENTS]. The detector comprises a coil of platinum wire inside a small bead of catalytic material. Resistance changes in the semi-conductor material when exposed to gases other than air are converted into an electrical signal proportional to the concentration of the gas.
. The compensator is similar but does not contain a catalyst and therefore does not respond to gas. where the heat generated increases its resistance. pressure and humidity which affect both elements equally. producing a signal proportional to the concentration of combustible gas. The pressure changes resulting from the heating and cooling of the molecules are measured by a sensitive microphone located inside the photo-acoustic infrared monitor. Combustible gases are oxidised only on the detector element. If the sample contains the gas in question. a detector and compensator. The gas molecules heat and cool as they absorb the pulsed infrared energy.
Semi-conducters [ Solid-State-Sensor ]
Semi-conductor gas sensors are based on the electronic conductivity effects when gases are adsorbed onto a semi-conductor surface. it will absorb an amount of infrared light proportional to the concentration of gas present.Catalytics
The measurement principle behind this technology is based on catalytic combustion of the measured gas or vapours in air up to the Lower Explosive Limit [LEL] of the gas. The compensator helps to compensate for changes in ambient temperature. A gas sample is introduced into the measurement chamber and the sample is exposed to a specific wavelength of pulsed infrared light.
