Last Tuesday, January 29th, the Montpelier Solons boys basketball team traveled to Randolph to play a game against the 8-4 Galloping Ghosts. The game started out very close, with the Solons taking a 10-8 lead in the first quarter. Randolph came back with a 10-8 score in the second to tie the game at half time, 18-18. The third quarter was much the same, with the Ghosts leading 32-30 to start the fourth. Randolph came alive in the final quarter, however, outscoring the Solons 24-11 to seal the win, 56-41. Randolph’s Ross Caswell was the game high scorer with 19. Balanced scoring by Dylan Jacobs (12 pts) , Jacob Sprague (9pts), and Levi West (8 pts) made it possible for Randolph to improve to 9-4. High scorers for the 3-10 Solons were Jacob Smith with 13 points and Rory King with 11 points.

Since 2009, hunters have had the opportunity to pursue snow geese during the spring as a result of a special management action referred to as a “Conservation Order” allowed by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service and adopted by the Vermont Fish and Wildlife Board. The measure was adopted at the recommendation of federal and state wildlife scientists in response to concerns about a growing number of snow geese across North America. Eight states in the Atlantic Flyway (Delaware, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Vermont) will hold a Spring Snow Goose Conservation Order in 2013. The Vermont 2013 Spring Snow Goose Conservation Order will occur statewide from March 11 through April 26. The daily bag limit ift is 15 snow geese, and there is no possession with a G to limit. According to the U. S. Fish and Wildlife Service, the overabundance of light geese, which nest in far northern regions of North America, is harming their fragile arctic breeding habitat. The damage to the habitat is, in turn, harming the health of the light geese and other bird species that depend on the tundra habitat. Returning the light goose population to sustainable levels is necessary to protect this delicate habitat and every species dependent on it. Greater snow geese make up a large share of the light goose population in the Atlantic Flyway. “The population of greater snow geese has grown from approximately 50,000 birds in the mid-1960s to 1 million today,” said David Sausville, Vermont’s waterfowl project biologist. “This increase has resulted in damage to agricultural crops and marsh vegetation in staging and wintering areas from Quebec to North Carolina. The Atlantic Flyway has established a goal of 500,000 greater snow geese to bring populations in balance with their habitat and reduce crop depredation.” Hunters who obtain a permit will be required to complete an online survey after April 26 and prior to May 16, 2013, whether they hunted or not. Hunters without access to the internet may obtain a copy of the survey by calling 802-8781564. The Spring Snow Goose hunt occurs annually from March 11 until the Friday before Youth Turkey Weekend. During spring migration, snow geese typically move through the Champlain Valley in late March and early April. They usually pass through Vermont fairly quickly in route to their spring staging areas along the St. Lawrence River Valley. Here they remain for about a month before moving on to their nesting areas in the Eastern Canadian Arctic. About 100 snow geese are taken by Vermont hunters during the spring seasons.

Nearly 200 baseball fans of all ages crowded the Governor’s Ballroom at the Capitol Plaza Hotel and Conference Center in Montpelier to be entertained by noted personalities in the sports and entertainment worlds on January 26th. It was the Annual Vermont Mountaineers’ Hot Stove Banquet and the attractions were Buster Olney of ESPN and Giancarlo Esposito of film and television fame. Buster Olney held the complete attention of the overflow crowd with stories of his sports reporting Sports writer Buster Olney, a native of profession. He is a columRandolph, was the keynote speaker at the Mountaineers’ Hot Stove nist for ESPN: The Banquet. Magazine and ESPN.com. He has covered the New York Giants football team and the Yankees for The New York Times. Olney noted that what he called the culture of baseball has made prevalent the use of amphetamines in major league baseball since at least the 1950’s. He said the sports media “blew the story” of drug use because they wanted to “humanize” the story with a confession from a player, which never happened, instead of reporting the “global story” about drugs in baseball. The Randolph native said baseball was his escape when he was a child. Some baseball cards he purchased at a local store turned his life into a career as one of the most respected sports reporters in the country. “This is a lot of fun,” he said, “I wanted to do this since I was 15 – pretty cool.” Esposito is a well-known film and television actor who has appeared in the AMC series Breaking Bad. He also appears in the ABC series Once Upon A Time and the NBC series Revolution. He was the recipient of the Best Supporting Actor in a Drama award in 2012. An unabashed Yankee fan, Esposito used acting as an analogy to baseball. He said baseball taught him that acting is a team game. “You get beyond the ego and you know you can’t act alone,” he said. Esposito said it takes teamwork to act as it does to pay baseball. The prestigious Robin Roberts Award, named in honor of baseball Hall of Fame legend, Robin Roberts, was presented to

Christian Friedrich, a rising star of the Colorado Rockies mound staff. Friedrich pitched the Mountaineers to their first ever NECBL Championship in 2006 and went on to be drafted in the first round of the amateur baseball draft in 2008. He made is major league debut May 9, 2012 and is part of the four-man pitching rotation for the Rockies. As most local baseball fans know, Robin Roberts pitched at Montpelier Recreation Field for the Twin City Trojans of the old Northern League before he launched Former Mountaineer Christian his professional baseball Friedrich, now pitching for the Colorado Rockies, received this year’s career. Robin Roberts Award. Other events at the highly popular banquet included several awards and recognitions of individuals who, over the past decade, have helped establish the Vermont Mountaineers as one of the most successful franchises in the New England Collegiate Baseball League. The Eddie Walbridge Award, presented to individuals who have committed time and talent to the Mountaineers, went to Lori and Kevin Major and Debbie and Tom McCormick. Both couples have been fully engaged as Mountaineers volunteers over the past decade. Another highlight of the banquet was the introduction of Joe Brown, Head Baseball Coach at Cortland State University, as the Field Manager of the 2013 edition of the Mountaineers baseball team. Coach Brown, the winningest baseball coach in the country, said his objective will be to teach collegiate players to separate themselves from where they were (their college), to where they are (Mountaineers). Predicting he expects to be in the playoffs by August, Coach Brown noted the 2013 season is another chapter in the ball player’s career and another chapter in the Mountaineers organization. NECBL officials were on hand to present the Umpire of the Year Award to Bruce James of Lyndonville, who has been a sports official for more than 25 years. James has umpired Single and Double A baseball games as well as at the collegiate level. The 2013 Mountaineers’ baseball season will open at Montpelier Recreation Field on Saturday, June 8.

Late Model Champion Nick Sweet celebrated his second King of the Road title at the Thunder Road Banquet of Champions on Saturday, January 26 at the Barre Elks Club. Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman Champion Bobby Therrien, and Allen Lumber Street Stock Champion Nick Pilotte were also honored for their respective titles. Sweet dominated the Late Model division in 2012, becoming just the third Late Model champion in Thunder Road’s history to win the title with four victories. The family-run team posted a nearly unbeatable 13 top tens in their 14 starts, claiming his second championship in his four-year late model career at The Nation’s Site of Excitement. He now has nine feature Late Model victories at Thunder Road. Hinesburg’s Bobby Therrien was honored for his Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen championship, though he could not be in attendance. His heroism in the final laps at the 50th People’s United Bank Milk Bowl earned him his first Tiger Championship by two points over Wolcott’s Brendan Moodie, Jr. Jefferson, NH’s Nick Pilotte claimed his first Allen Lumber Street Stock championship in 2012, after missing the title by just three points in 2011. He finished in the top ten in 17 of the 18 events in 2012. He also welcomed a son in the off-season. Times Argus Sports Editor Anna Grearson won the Ken Squier award for contributions to Thunder Road. She was praised for her

dedication to loyal fans and drivers, and Vermont as a whole, through her writing and her passion for the sport. Rookie of the Year honors were received by Barre’s own Lance Allen in the Late Models, Waterbury Center’s Jason Woodard in the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, and Lyndonville’s Dean Switser in the Allen Lumber Street Stock division. The Sportsmanship Award in the Late Models was given to Fayston’s Brooks Clark for his positive attitude and veteran presence in the pits. Williamstown’s Mike Ziter won the Sportsmanship Award for the third year straight in the Bond Auto Tiger Sportsmen, and Elmore’s Dave Whitcomb won the Ed Carroll Memorial Sportsmanship Award in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks. Most Improved awards went to young Late Model standout Cody Blake, two-time Bond Auto Tiger Sportsman winner in 2012 Christopher Pelkey, and sophomore sensation Cameron Ouellette in the Allen Lumber Street Stocks. 2013 looks to be another historic year at the Nation’s Site of Excitement as teams prepare for the upcoming season. The 2013 Thunder Road season kicks off with the Merchants Bank 150 on the weekend of April 27th and 28th. The remainder of the Thunder Road schedule is set to be released in the near future.

2012 American Canadian Tour Champion Wayne Helliwell, Jr., and 2012 Série ACT Castrol Champion Patrick Laperle were the stars of the ACT Banquet at the Doubletree Inn in Burlington on Saturday, January 12th, earning the highest awards for their respective titles. ACT awarded over $700,000 in point funds and event purses to teams in 2012. Helliwell was honored after one of the most entertaining pointbattles of ACT’s history, beating out eight-time Tour Champion Brian Hoar in an epic battle for his first-ever ACT Championship. He won four races in 2012, including his first-career ACT victory, and only finished worse than seventh once. He won $10,000 for his ACT Championship, but also picked up an additional $5,000 from the Ford point fund for winning the Ford Blue Oval Challenge for a record third time in a row. Laperle enjoyed a comeback year on the Série ACT Castrol. After falling as low as sixth in the beginning of the season, Laperle surged for four wins and nine top-fives to claim an unprecedented third Castrol Series Championship, along with a $10,000 check. Laperle, now with 17 feature victories, sits just one win away from having the most in Series history. The prestigious MacTavish Award was given to car owner Richard Green of Enosburg Falls. Green, who in 2012 owned the 16VT of Joey Becker and the 16NY car on the ACT Tour, was given the award for the first time for his dedication and loyalty to ACT, and his contributions to the sport of auto racing. The Pete Hartt Memorial Media Award was earned by Vermont Motorsports Magazine editor T.J. Ingerson, who was touted for his emergence as one of the region’s premiere auto racing writers, and

was also praised for his tireless dedication to ACT and other motorsports through his publication. The Doc Nielson Rookie Award was given to Williamstown’s Jimmy Hebert, who also won Rookie of the Year on the American Canadian Tour. Hebert impressed with top ten finishes at New Hampshire Motor Speedway, Airborne Speedway, and Thunder Road, and also finished in the top ten in overall points on the American Canadian Tour. Etienne Cliche took Rookie of the Year honors in the Castrol Series after a career-best sixth place finish in the season finale at St-Eustache. He finished eleventh overall in the 2012 Série ACT Castrol Standings. For the second year in a row, the ACT Crew Chief award went to Bruce Bernhardt, who served as both crew chief and car owner for the ACT US Championship #27NH car driven by Wayne Helliwell, Jr. The pair won over 20 races in the region in 2012, including their first ACT Championship. Bernhardt is the first Crew Chief to win two consecutive Crew Chief awards. On the Série ACT Castrol Tour, the Crew Chief of the #21QC driven by Jean Francois Dery, Gabriel Drouin, won the award for the first time. The team finished second in the overall standings on the Castrol Series, and finished on the podium a stunning nine times in 2012. The team only finished outside the top ten twice. With the off-season already halfway complete, the 2013 season approaches quickly. The American Canadian Tour season begins at Lee USA Speedway with a 150-lap event on the weekend of April 13/14. Série ACT Castrol kicks off at Autodrome Montmagny on Saturday, May 25 with a 100-lap event.

Devil’s Bowl Speedway has announced its most exciting asphalt stock car racing schedule to date for the 2013 season. Sixteen actionpacked events will feature a different headline race at each outing, creating a summer full of dramatic door-to-door competition for the local stars of the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series at the West Haven half-mile oval. The season opens on Sunday, May 5 at 1:30pm with the historic “Spring Green 113” for the American-Canadian Tour (ACT) Late Models. The 39th running of the Spring Green marks the third consecutive year that the event will be held at Devil’s Bowl; Wayne Helliwell, Jr., of Dover, NH posted the first victory of his ACT championship season in the 2012 event. The race also opens the championship schedule for the open-wheel Bond Auto Parts Modifieds, the American-made, V8-powered Renegades, and the entry-level fourcylinder Mini Stocks of the weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series. Summer officially arrives as the Friday night season begins with the People’s United Bank Memorial Day Special on Friday, May 24 at the new earlier weekly start time of 7pm. Twin 25-lap features for the ground-pounding Modifieds and the championship opener for the J&S Steel Late Models are scheduled along with the Renegades, Mini Stocks, and a holiday fireworks show. The Modifieds will also have Twin 25 doubleheaders on Friday, June 21 and Friday, August 16. Ron Proctor of Charlton, NY will try for his third consecutive Modified championship in 2013.

The Granite State Pro Stock Series will make its first-ever appearance in Vermont on Friday, June 7 with the “Slate Valley 100” at Devil’s Bowl Speedway. The second-year tour will bring cars similar in construction and appearance to the weekly Devil’s Bowl Late Model class, but with wider tires and bigger horsepower. Weekly competitors are encouraged to race in the event by making minor and relatively inexpensive modifications. Past winners on the Granite State tour include NASCAR Nationwide Series driver Matt Frahm of New Salem, NH and regular Devil’s Bowl competitor Chris Wilk of Mendon, VT. Three big events in July will make the racing action as hot as the weather – the Coca-Cola Firecracker returns on Friday, July 5 with 44-lap features for Modifieds and Late Models, plus Renegades, Mini Stocks, and a massive Independence Day fireworks celebration. One week later, The Rutland Herald presents the double-points, doublepressure Mid-Season Championships on Friday, July 12. A nine-day summer break will let teams regroup before the American-Canadian Tour returns for the season’s second event – a 150-lap marathon on Sunday, July 28 at 1:30pm. The Modified division will be put to the test in the ultimate stretch drive toward the championship, as August features two extra-distance races and a Twin 25 card. The second annual Carrara Masonry & Concrete C.J. Richards Memorial event will be held on Friday, August 2, as the Modifieds race 67 laps in honor of late Devil’s Bowl Speedway founder Richards, who opened the facility in 1967. The Modifieds will run a regular event on August 9 before the exciting Twin 25s return on Brown’s Quarried Slate/Brown’s Orchard & Farm Stand Night on August 16, and the weekly summer season closes on Friday, August 23 with a 50-lap grind presented by the Sugar & Spice restaurant and gift shop. The Vermont 200 Weekend will crown the 2013 track champions in all four weekly NASCAR Whelen All-American Series divisions on September 14-15. Last year’s two-day spectacular event featured extra-distance races that saw close racing and exciting finishes in all four classes; details regarding the Vermont 200 Weekend will be released soon. The 2013 season draws to a close with the wild-and-crazy “Vermonster 150” Enduro on Saturday, October 19. Enduro races are caution-free, survival-of-the-fittest marathons for strictly stock vehicles and novice drivers. The Vermonster 150 will be the final event of a four-race Enduro schedule at Devil’s Bowl Speedway; Enduros will also be held in conjunction with weekly Friday night events on May 31, June 28, and August 16. The Vermonster 150 will highlight a card that includes the always-unpredictable Spectator Races and special non-championship races for the Renegades and Mini Stocks.
