As a result of high energy efciency and spe-
cial light quality, the role LEDs play in lighting
is increasing. In 2020, the lighting market is
expected to achieve a global volume of EUR
110 billion, a similar level to the TV market.
Despite relatively high costs, LED lighting
systems are a coveted special accessory
amongst car buyers. In addition to the safety
LED Markets
aspects, LED lights signicantly enhance the
look of a new vehicle and are therefore an
absolute essential for many people. Light de-
sign with LEDs not only plays an increasingly
important role in the automotive industry, but
in many other areas as well.
According to business consultancy firm
McKinsey, the current European market for
LED lighting is around EUR 1 Billion. General
Lighting is the largest segment with a very high
percentage of new LED-based products intro-
duced. Retail and Architectural applications
follow with the performance, reliability and
design exibility being the main advantages
and along with outdoor lighting McKinsey pre-
dict the largest growth in this area by 2020.
Finally, industrial and office applications
currently exhibit the weakest growth due to
existing signicant investments in traditional
technology such as uorescent lighting, perhaps
providing the best opportunity for innovation.
LEDs have spent the longest period of time
being used as backlighting. Manufacturers
have been tting mobile device displays with
LEDs since the end of the 1990s. After mobile
phones, larger products like laptops and TVs
were gradually fitted with LED backlights,
which was very benecial to the overall devel-
opment of the LED in the lighting market. LED
lighting systems are not just stylish but are
also very energy efcient and robust. Their low
power consumption makes for strong market
growth in the energy-conscious climate of
Europe. For example, virtually all convention-
al bulbs will be banned from 2012 for energy-
saving reasons.
At present, halogen bulbs still provide an
alternative, but the superior quality of the
LEDs and the continuously falling prices level
out the long-term success of LEDs. Manu-
facturers, system providers and retailers can
adapt themselves to a multi-layered clientele
in the broadest industries.

Lighting Project Flow
Designing a lighting system involves several
steps (and iterations...) calling upon different
competencies and technologies. With the
objective of optimizing lifetime and reliability
through a proper thermal management of the
system, designers have to achieve the best
possible electrical and optical efficiency,
while of course keeping costs within target.
Starting from the light that has to be pro-
duced, then shaping it with optics, removing
the heat from the back of the LEDs, delivering
to them the right current at the right voltage,
safely connecting the system mechanically
and electrically and then controlling when and
how light should appear, these are some of
the challenges faced when creating a solid
state luminaire.
The Arrow lighting team will work together
with you at every step of your project, from
technical and design support to inventory
and bin management, in order for you to
achieve your time to market and cost
goals.

LEDagon reference system accelerates solid-state lighting designs
Arrow Electronics, Cree, Haeusermann and
KATHREIN Austria have announced LED-
agon, a unique LED lighting solution. The
LEDagon LED reference lighting system
showcases a variety of solid-state lighting
technologies including thermal management
solutions, innovative printed circuit boards,
sensors and other electronic components.
LEDagon provides companies with an op-
portunity to implement product ideas quickly
and economically with market-leading sup-
pliers. Arrow, Cree, Haeusermann and KATH-
REIN Austria have formed a partnership that
offers a complete spectrum of technologies
and services to meet all needs, ranging from
design support, through the integration of
state-of-the-art technologies, to assembly
and component procurement.
LEDagon is based on HSMtec, a copper/FR4
printed circuit board technology developed
by Haeusermann. HSMtec enables optimized
thermal management for High-Power LEDs
and arrays, high current capabilities and mul-
tidimensional PCB structures for individual
lighting- and product-design. LEDagon also
has intelligent control electronics featuring a

Arrow Lighting Guide

The prices for energy continue to spiral and
electricity in particular is becoming increas-
ingly expensive due to the need for invest-
ment in transmission networks. The potential
to save power offered by using modern light-
ing systems is enormous.
Experts estimate an energy saving of 7.5bil-
lion kilowatt hours for private lighting, 8.3bil-
lion kilowatt hours for industrial lighting and
3.2billion kilowatt hours for ofce lighting.
With 2.2billion kilowatt hours, street lighting
also offers signicant power saving potential,
particularly due to that fact that about a third
of Germanys street lighting is at least 20
years old. Modernisation would not only dras-
tically reduce CO
2
emissions, but also help to
cut costs over the long term.
Municipalities have to modernise street
lighting
Theres another reason why municipalities
need to take action. They are under an obliga-
tion to provide street lighting. The EU Ecode-
sign Directives 2005/32/EC and 2008/28/
EC prohibit the sale of mercury vapour lamps
starting from 2015.
Luckily, for some time now LEDs have pro-
vided an economical alternative lighting solu-
tion. LEDS offer enormous exibility for in-
door and outdoor lighting. A long life, low
energy consumption, low maintenance costs,
easy dimming and resistance to knocks and
vibrations are the trademarks of the new
lighting systems.
As one of the leading distributors for semi-
conductors, passive and electro-mechanical
components and embedded solutions, Arrow
presents an exemplary LED street lighting
system proof of concept. The system for
street lighting is based on LEDs from Cree, a
luminaire housing from GBS, secondary op-
tics from LEDIL, LED drivers (constant power
supply with temperature protection) from In-
neon Technologies, and is produced at MAL
Effekt (box 1). In terms of energy yield and
environmental friendliness, LEDs are state of
the art.
Taking a very close look at light yield data
Incorrect values are often stated for luminous
efcacy. This is frequently out of ignorance,
but sometimes also in order to literally show
ones own products in a better light, according
to www.strassenlicht.de. The portal recom-
mends examining the light output of the sys-
tem as a whole and comes to the conclusion
that todays system light yields of 70 to 100
lumen/watt are the innovative state of devel-
opment. Higher values for an LED street light-
ing system are currently not economically
viable.
How street lighting has to be designed is de-
fined in DIN norms, e.g. in DIN EN 13201
Part 1, which regulates the selection of light-
ing classes. The lighting situations to be ex-
amined for different traffic areas are de-
scribed using a parameter system. The basic
parameters are the typical speed of the main
user high, medium, low speed or walking
pace and the types of user within the area
under examination, for example motorised
vehicles, bicycles or pedestrians. Depending
on the combination of the individual basic
parameters, this results in a lighting situation,
which is described with a letter and a digit.
Further parameters, such as the geometrical
properties of the trafc area and the prevail-
ing weather, are also taken into account and
ultimately produce the lighting class. The ex-
emplary LED solution from Arrow is accord-
ingly assigned to lighting class ME5. Table 2
lists the norms and standards that have to be
taken into consideration for street lighting.
The modernisation of street lighting is
subsidised
Good news for nance directors: The KfW
development bank promotes the modernisa-
tion of street lighting with particularly low-
interest loans in the programmes KfWInves-
titionskredit Kommunen Premium Energie-
efziente Stadtbeleuchtung for municipalities
and Kommunal investieren Premium Ener-
gieefziente Stadtbeleuchtung for municipal
enterprises. The replacement, retrot and
reinstallation of street lighting systems are
subsidised. Furthermore, measures for the
lighting of parking areas, public open spaces,
multi-storey and underground car parks, and
trafc lights are nanced. It is also possible
to receive subsidies for the construction of
charging points for electric vehicles in con-
nection with lamp posts.

It is important to know that LED systems are
not only kind to municipal nances, but also
to nocturnal animals. LED light is relatively
insect-friendly, since the frequency range to
which insects eyes respond particularly sen-
sitively is scarcely produced. Very good re-
sults are also achieved with sodium vapour
high-pressure lighting, but LED is by far the
least likely to attract insects.
Important parameters
Last, but not least, municipal decision-makers
also have to keep an eye on the useful life of
lighting systems. Here LEDs generally score
very high if all the parameters are correct. The
barrier layer temperature is a very important
variable for LEDs. High-performance LEDs
do not emit heat, in contrast to conventional
light bulbs. The heat generated is redirected
from the barrier layer via the metallic connec-
tors to the PCB and to the surroundings. It is
not only the service life that depends on the
temperature of the barrier layer, but the opti-
cal properties, such as colour or light inten-
sity, are also affected. Precise knowledge of
this variable, which is also referred to as the
junction temperature, is of great importance
in practice. A widespread, but relatively inex-
act method is measurement with a thermal
imaging camera. Some suppliers use more
precise measuring techniques, which are thus
more reliable, to determine the temperature
of the barrier layer, while at the same time
measuring further key parameters such as
light intensity and power consumption.

Colour Measurement
In order to measure colour, the Commission
Internationale de lEclairage (CIE) also cre-
ated the CIE 1931 Chromaticity Diagram (see
gure on left) that represents all the colours
that the human eye can perceive. The curve
that forms the periphery, or edges, of the dia-
gram, is called the spectral locus. The spec-
tral locus corresponds to the spectral colours
in the visible light spectrum and contains the
wavelength values.
CIE Chromaticity Diagram Features
The CIE diagram is a two-dimensional chart
specifying chromaticity by using X and Y co-
ordinates. The CIE Diagram represents colour
as seen by the human eye in full daylight. The
spectral colours are located on the outside of
the horseshoe shape curve (spectral locus).
The colours located in other areas are not
spectral. For example, the bottom straight line
represents a line of purples, while the interior
are unsaturated colours: a mixture of a spec-
tral colour and a grayscale colour.
LEDs And Saturated Colours
Monochromatic light (consisting of only one
wavelength) is, by denition, fully saturated.
Single LEDs are essentially monochromatic
and, therefore, produce saturated light. How-
ever, when multiple LEDs of different colours
are combined to get another colour the result
is unsaturated light.

Warm, Neutral, and Cool White
Colour temperature can also be associated
with white light. White light is called warm,
neutral, or cool, depending on its colour tem-
perature range. This terminology, however,
can be confusing since it is counter-intuitive.
The reason being the higher the colour tem-
perature, the cooler the light, and the lower
the colour temperature, the warmer the light.
Cool means the white light appears more blu-
ish and warm means the white light appears
more reddish.
Warm: 2700 K 3700 K
Neutral: 3700 K 5000 K
Cool: 5000 K 10000 K
The Binning Issue
The human eye can detect very subtle chang-
es in colour, down to
~
10 nm for red and 2 to
3 nm for green. For white light LEDs, this sen-
sitivity may or may not be an issue depending
on the application. For example, in applications
such as ashlights and headlamps matching
the exact chromaticity of white light is not as
critical as that of an application using a string
of a dozen or so HBLED modules to light a
wall in an ofce building. If the LEDs are not
matched properly they will produce a kind of
rainbow of different shades of white light on
wall. This problem does not exist with an in-
candescent lamp since it produces a wide
range of frequencies. To minimize this poten-
tial problem vendors provide binning charts.
Binning Introduction
Binning is the process of methodically sorting
and grouping LEDs according to some mea-
sured parameter or set of parameters. This
allows design engineers to systematically
specify an LED and it allows the manufac-
turer to order LEDs that function consist-
ently in the same way as the specied part.
Binning also makes it possible to reorder
LEDs that match the original.
Binning Process
Binning diagrams employ geometric regions
on the CIE 1931 Diagram arranged along the
BBL to specify chromaticity coordinate vari-
ation. The BBL in the gure below is the line
on which the colour temperatures for white
light from sources with a CRI of 100 will lie.
The lines labeled 5000K through 10000K
are the lines of CCT. Each of the regions, such
as WA, WB, and WC, represents two kinds of
colour variation. One is the CCT variation (for
example, 5000K to 5700K in WH and WJ).
The other variation is called tint, indicating
how far the chromaticity coordinates are from
the BBL. The top of region WG, for instance,
would have a slightly more greenish tint than
the bottom. The bottom of WP would have a
slightly more purplish tint than the top. WD, in
between WG and WP, would have a smaller
range of tint. Nevertheless, WG, WD, and WP
are all in the same CCT range. Chromaticities
that lie directly on the BBL do not have a tint.
Supplier and Customer View of Binning
Chromaticity bins are technically set up as a
function of an LED suppliers production yield.
Customers can use them, however, to speci-
fy and record parts. Rectangle WE contains
the chromaticity coordinates CCy = 0.33,
CCx = 0.30. It also contains CCy = 0.32 and
CCx = 0.29, and many others that intersect
within it. For a given customer application, the
light that any LED emits whose chromaticity
falls within the region WE, will be considered
a match for the light from any other LED
whose chromaticity coordinates also fall with-
in region WE.

Lenses and Optics
Optics are the elements that shape and direct the light generated by the LED. Optics
can be dened as devices used to control light output so that it is a usable source. There
are three basic categories of LED optics:
Pr|uury-usuu||yuttuchedd|rect|ytotheLLD
3econdury-usuu||ytd|rect|yoveroruroundtheLLD
Tert|ury-usuu||ysouetypeoexternu|dev|ce
Primary optics are usually part of the LED package - lenses integrated into LED pack-
ages, especially SMT and power packages, can cause the luminous ux from the LED
to adopt a specic radiation pattern.
Generally referred to as secondary optics, lenses and reectors are mechanically po-
sitioned on top of the LED for the desired lighting result. The eld of tertiary optics
encompasses numerous types of application.

The FL7730 is a dimmable high power factor
yback controller IC using primary-side reg-
ulation of the output current and voltage (the
FL7732 is an equivalent device for non-dim-
ming applications). LED driver solutions
based on FL773 series do not require an
input electrolytic capacitor, thereby saving
signicant cost and space. The constant cur-
rent accuracy at a system level is within 5%.
The solution is dimmable with standard TRIAC
dimmers. The power factor (PF) exceeds
90%, while the total harmonic distortion
(THD) meets Class C requirements.
The FL7701 is a high PFC buck controller IC.
Non-isolated LED driver solutions built
around it do not require electrolytic capaci-
tors either on the input or on the output, nor
do they require a transformer. No separate
Vdd supply is needed for the IC, removing the
need for an electrolytic Vdd capacitor. The
required inductor size is very small. An ana-
logue dimming input is provided.
For higher power, Fairchilds single-stage
PFC flyback solution covers 20W ~ 50W
applications. It is built around the FL6961
PFC controller IC and provides high efcien-
cy by offering high PF and low THD perfor-
mance without adding components, thus low-
ering the bill of materials (BoM) count.
Additionally, no bulk capacitor is needed,
which further extends the system lifetime. For
power levels up to 100W, the same PFC con-
troller is used with the FL6300 quasi-reso-
nant controller in a classical PFC and yback
conguration.
For power levels up to 400W, the FLS series
LLC half-bridge is an integrated solution with
three chips contained within one package.
The solution features internal MOSFETs with
fast recovery body diode and high side gate
driver included.

ages its expertise in power conversion technologies to deliver efcient, easy to use solutions for
LED lighting. www.irf.com/product-info/lighting/ledmain.html
In the rapidly growing solid state lighting sec-
tor, there is a need for low cost driver elec-
tronics to supply constant current output to
high brightness, high power LEDs. The
IRS2980 LEDrivIR IC offers improved per-
formance at a lower system cost than alter-
native solutions for non-isolated LED driver
applications. Rated at 600 V, the IRS2980 is
the rst in a family of high voltage LEDrivIR
ICs. It utilises International Rectiers propri-
etary control and high voltage technologies
to realise a simple, high performance buck
LED driver solution. The IRS2980S uses a
unique oating high side differential current
sense and level shift scheme allowing hys-
teretic operation with a low side switching
MOSFET optimising both size and cost. In
addition, it includes a high voltage regulator
able to operate up to 450V, eliminating the
need for an external VCC supply. A PWM
dimming interface is also included that can
be controlled from a 0V to 2V analogue or
3.3V or 5V logic control signal able to oper-
ate up to 1 kHz, offering brightness control
from 0 to 100%. An integrated PWM oscil-
lator is used for DC dimming control. The
IRS2980 is used in non-isolated buck LED
drivers. Due to its hysteretic average current
control method the design procedure is
greatly simplied and current regulation is
inherently stable under all line and load con-
ditions including short circuit. The IRS2980
based driver has a very low component count
and may be used off line, in battery powered
DC applications or as a back end regulating
stage in a multi-stage system. In AC systems
a power factor (PF) of 0.9 can be reached
using a simple passive circuit based on ca-
pacitors and diodes only. LED loads may be
disconnected and re-connected while the
converter is running without damage to the
converter.
Key features include:
Hysteretic current regulation
Analogue/PWM dimming input
PWM dimming interface allowing for 0%
to 100% brightness control
Hysteretic average current mode control
for precise current regulation
Internal high voltage regulator
Internal 15.6V Zener clamp diode on V

IRPLLED7 Reference Design Kit
The IRPLLED7 reference design kit and IR-
PLLED13 evaluation board illustrate the full
functionality of the IRS2980 device. The
reference desi gn ki t can operate from
70VAC input up to 240VAC output to pro-
vide a regulated 350mA output. Operation
is optimised for 120VAC. It includes a poten-
tiometer for self dimming and a passive val-
ley ll circuit that provides the 0.9PF. The
evaluation board delivers an LED output
voltage that can be up to 90% of the input
voltage, operating from an AC line input volt-
age bet ween 90 VAC and 250 VAC at
50/60Hz. The board does not provide gal-
vanic isolation of the LED drive output from
the line input. Therefore, if the system is sup-
plied directly from a non-isolated input, an
electrical shock hazard exists at the LED
outputs and these should not be touched
during operation. It is recommended that for
laboratory evaluation these boards be used
with an isolated AC or DC input supply.

60V Synchronous Buck-Boost LED Driver
The LT3791 is a highly integrated synchro-
nous 4-switch buck-boost LED driver and
voltage regulator controller IC. The controller
provides a xed output regardless of whether
the input voltage is above, below, or equal to
the output. The LT3791 has a 4.7V to 60V
input and 0V to 60V output range, along with
seamless transitions between operating
modes. A ground reference voltage FB pin
serves as the input for several LED protection
features and also makes it possible for the
converter to operate as a constant-voltage
source. The LT3791 is highly suitable for a
wide variety of lighting applications. It runs in
forced continuous mode, which is optimised
for systems with stringent EMI requirements.
Fault protection is provided to survive and
report an open or shorted LED condition. A
timer allows the LT3791 to continue to run,
latch off or restart when a fault occurs. The
DC1666A demo card for this device and it's
design les, are available from Arrow Elec-
tronics.

timised for driving high current LED emitters.
High output current accuracy is maintained
over a wide current range, from 35mA to 1A,
allowing a wide dimming range at output volt-
ages from 2.5V to 13V. The unique PWM
circuitry used by this device enables a dim-

LED Array Drivers Single Chip Solution for LED Control
The new LED array dri ver fami l y from
STMicroelectronics fully integrates all
functions required to drive high brightness
LEDs. These devices allow CC control of
more channels in a single chip solution. The
external parts are reduced to only one resistor
which sets the preferred maximum current for
all outputs. The devices cover different number
of channels (4 to 24) and current range (5mA
to 400mA per channel) options, as well as
having different features such as error detection
(ED) and auto power-saving functionality (AS).
The family offers a wide portfolio, from simple and
economical solutions (such as the STP16CPC26)
to more advanced solutions (such as the
STP16DPPS05, which has both ED and AS),
to RGB solutions (STP24DP05). All the
devices embed thermal shutdown and are
available in a wide range of packages (DIP,
SO, SSOP/TSSOP, QFN, TQFP, TSSOP
exposed pad). The AS functionality is specially
developed to reduce total power consumed
by LED drivers not actively driving any output
in real-time (ST patent). Auto power shutdown
and power-on features allow power savings
without any external intervention, making the
devi ces hi ghly sui ted to supporti ng all
worldwide energy efciency programs. The
ED mode can be remotely controlled using
specic digital keys through the devices SPI
port. Fault data is shifted out of the device via
the same SPI with no additional pin. This
reduces system downti me by al erti ng
maintenance crews of faulty LEDs.
Key features include:
Wide output current range:
5mA to 400mA
Error detection (ED)
Auto power-saving (AS)
Applications:
Full-colour or monochrome LEDs

60W Buck LED Driver
The LM3414 and LM3414HV are 60W
common anode capable constant current
(CC) buck LED drivers. They are highly suited
to driving a single string of 3W high brightness
LEDs (HBLEDs) with up to 96% efciency.
They accept input voltages ranging from
4.5 VDC to 65VDC and deliver up to 1A av-
erage LED current with 3% accuracy. The
integrated low-side N-channel power MOS-
FET and current sensing element realise sim-
ple and low component count circuitry as no
bootstrapping capacitor and external current
sensing resistor are required. An external
small-signal resistor to ground provides very
ne LED current adjustment, analogue dim-
ming as well as thermal fold-back functions.
Constant switching frequency operation eas-
es electromagnetic interference (EMI). No
external loop compensation network is needed.
LED Driver with PFC & Phase Dimming
The LM3450 integrates active power factor
correction (PFC) and phase dimming decoding
to provide uniform, flicker-free illumination
across a wide, programmable dimming range.
This device is highly suited to use in high per-
formance, phase dimmable, 10W to 100W
LED xtures. The built-in phase dimming de-
coder interprets the phase angle and remaps
it to a 500Hz PWM output to dim the LEDs.
This makes it highly suitable for implementing
as a phase dimmable off-line LED driver for
10W to 100W loads. The integrated hold cir-
cuitry allows for dynamic adjustment of the
current through the phase dimmer. This cou-
pled with a programmable, intelligent dimming
decoder, ensures smooth, consistent illumina-
tion across the full dimming range. Further-
more, the LM3450s PFC functionality ensures
a high PF that complies with residential and
commercial Energy Star
standards.
Key features include:
Support LED power up to 60W
(18 3W HBLEDs)
Requires no external current sensing
resistor
3% LED current accuracy
Up to 96% efciency
High contrast ratio - minimum dimming
current pulse width <10s
Integrated low-side N-channel MOSFET
Adjustable constant LED current from
350mA to 1000mA
Support analogue dimming & thermal
fold-back
Wide input voltage range: 4.5V to 42V
(LM3414), 4.5V to 65V (LM3414HV)
Constant switching frequency adjustable
from 250kHz to 1000kHz
Thermal shutdown protection
Power enhanced ePSOP8 or 3mm x
3mm LLP8 package
The LM3450 driver can be implemented in
either single stage or two stage congurations.
The single stage conguration yields the small-
est footprint and allows for the highest effi-
ciency when converting from the AC mains
voltage. The two stage conguration provides
improved dimming performance and better
noise immunity.

LM3466 LED Driver
Smart Linear LED Driver for Multi-
Channel LED Systems
The LM3466 is a highly integrated linear LED
driver that simplies the design of high power,
wide area lighting xtures such as streetlights.
It equalises the current provided by the supply
in a pre-set ratio for each active LED string,
where an active string is a fully turned on LED
string, regardless of the number of strings con-
nected to the supply or the forward voltage of
each LED string. If any LED string opens during
operation, the LM3466 automatically equal-
ises the supply current through all of the re-
maining active LED strings. As a result, the
overall brightness of the lighting system is
maintained even if some LED strings open dur-
ing operation. The LM3466 lighting system is
simple to design owing to a proprietary control
scheme. To minimise the component count, the
device integrates a 70 V, 1.5 A N-channel pow-
er MOSFET with a current limit of 2.06A. In
order to allow one more LED string to be add-
ed to the system, only a single resistor, a ca-
pacitor and a LM3466 are required. Other su-
pervisory features of this device include
under-voltage lock-out, fault reporting, thermal
latch off, and thermal shutdown protection. The
LM3466 is available in a PSOP8 exposed
DAP package. Linear circuitry safeguards
against any EMI and ensures compliance with
the EN 55015 standard or other regional reg-
ulatory requirements.

Low Noise 16Channel Constant Current
Sink LED Driver
The TLC59282 i s a seri al -control l ed,
16-channel constant current sink LED driver
with 4-channel grouped delay. This device sim-
plies design in LED display applications, in-
cluding video displays, message boards,
amusement illumination and LED indicators. It
minimises simultaneous switching noise by
staggering the switching of the LED outputs,
lowering the peak switching current transients
facilitating low-cost, two-layer printed circuit
board (PCB) routing in LED modules. With tra-
ditional multi-channel LED drivers, four-layer
PCB routing is required to prevent switching
transients from causing corruption of the se-
rial data communication path during output
blanking. In addition to electro-magnetic noise
reduction, the TLC59282 has high-precision
channel-to-channel and chip-to-chip accu-
racy, which ensures that uniform current is sup-
plied to each LED string. It is available in an
SSOP package.
Key features include:

Constant Voltage AC LED Drivers
LEDs are usually driven by current drivers, but
there are applications on the market which
need constant voltage instead of constant
current. Due to legal requirements, constant
voltage LED drivers must meet specic pa-
rameters. Power factor correction (PFC) >
0.9 is already mandatory at power levels
starting from 25W and EN6100023 class
C compliance is now required (which is not
typical for standard constant voltage sup-
plies). The RACV and RACD series of 3W,
6W, 12W, 20W, 30W and 60W constant
voltage driver modules are isolated and meet
UL and EN standards.

Interconnect and
Passives
Connectors are used to create separable electromechanical interfaces and basically
comprise a housing and some contacts. Used for power and/or signal transmission
between elements of the luminaires, typical connectors in lighting systems include holders
for LEDs and board-to-board, wire-to-board and wire-to-wire connections within the
module and between the module and the outside world. Connectors also provide the
necessary and often innovative nal connection of the luminaires to the power source.
Some of the main dedicated components for lighting include devices toprotect the LEDs
and components such as capacitors, inductive components, trimmers, potentiometers
and batteries needed for the electronic circuits that drive the LEDs.

NOTE: MOVs were tested with 1.250us open circuit voltage waveform and 820us short circuit current waveform forming a combo waveform with 2ohm source impedance. Standard method was used for testing the
MOVs per datasheet specications which consisted of driving 10kA through the part with the generated combination wave. Peak voltage was adjusted to a bit higher than 20kV in order to drive exactly 10kA of peak cur-
rent. In real world events, actual peak current through the luminaire with typical circuit impedance path will likely be lower. Littelfuse has tested the above part selections to a more stringent level as it complies with our in-
ternal testing standards. The TVS diodes and PLED options were not tested due to the custom nature of each commercial lighting design.

transients, surges and lightning effects.
These constitute hazards to fragile electron-
ics and consequently affect the operating life
of the overall LED lighting product. TDK and
EPCOS brand electronic components offer
the necessary circuit protection to ensure the
reliability of the design.

AC Mains LED Lighting Protection
Metal Oxide Varistors (MOVs) are typically
used for transient overvoltage suppression
in AC line voltage applications. Lightning, in-
ductive load switching, or capacitor bank
switching may cause transient overvoltage
conditions. In these applications, there also
exists the potential for a sustained abnormal
overvoltage/limited current condition that
may cause the MOV to go into thermal runa-
way, resulting in overheating, outgassing and
possibly re. New thermally enhanced MOVs
help protect a wide variety of low-power sys-
tems against damage caused by overcurrent,
overtemperature and overvoltage faults, in-
cluding lightning strikes, electrostatic dis-
charge (ESD) surges, loss of neutral, incorrect
input voltage and power induction.

Thermal Management
In terms of solid state lighting, thermal management is the process of controlling and
diverting heat from the LED package. LEDs require current to pass through them in
order to maintain a consistent level of illumination. This also means that the temperature
of the device must be controlled, since current ow generates heat that could nega-
tively affect the light output and the lifetime of the LED if not properly managed. There
are three basic categories of thermal management products:
Primary - MCPCB (Metal Core PCB using thermal compound) or copper-based PCB
Secondary - Heatsink or other material that directly attaches to the LED or PCB
Tertiary - Forced air or other heat dispersal method
A heatsink is a device (usually made of metal) that absorbs and dissipates heat from
another device (in this case a power LED). Heatsinks are available in a wide variety of
sizes and forms.

Specialty Products for Thermal Management
Junction temperature effects the ux (lumen/
volt) output as well as the useful life of LED
devices, making thermal management a cru-
cial part of modern lighting system design.
The 3M thermal interface materials include a
broad range of high adhesion thin tapes and
pads which offer efcient thermal transfer.
These materials are used for a wide variety of
applications that require a high performance
thermal management solution.
3Ms 8805, 8810, 8815 and 8820 series of
thermally conductive transfer tapes exhibit a
high mechanical strength, improved surface
wet out and strong shock performance for
applications requiring thin bonding with good
thermal transfer. These tapes can be applied
quickly and easily using die-cut shapes, of-
fering high temperature adhesion with good
dielectric strength. Applications range from
bonding heat sinks, heat spreaders and oth-
er cooling devises to IC packages, power
transistors and other heat generating com-
ponents like LEDs.
Key features include:
Strong thermal conductivity
Strong electrical insulation
Good & reliable adhesion performance
Low thermal impedance
Applications:
LED module bonding
General heat sink bonding
3Ms hyper-soft, thermally conductive inter-
face pads are derived from either silicon or
acrylic polymer lled with ceramic particles.
They are ame retardant and used to aug-
ment the heat dissipation effect of conven-
tional heat sinks and other passive devices.
The pads are best used for applications re-
quiring gap lling and superior thermal per-
formance without bonding.
Key features include:
Thin for lower thermal impedance: 0.20mm
& 0.25mm thick products available
Softness & conformability even to non-at
surfaces
Good dimensional stability to improve con-
verting process & ease to make complex
die cut patterns
Good thermal conductivity
Strong electrical insulation properties
High pressure relaxation capability
Surface tack allows pre-assembly
Applications:
LED board TIM
IC packaging heat conduction
Thermally Conductive Transfer Tapes
Thermally Conductive Interface Used with Heatsink
