OTHER TRAINING PROGRAMS
We were in the grooming industry before the superstores. PETCO and PetSmart introduced new career training opportunities on a large scale which gave career seekers vast new opportunities. They changed the industry. Where there are no schools, and some states have no schools, corporate stores may become all the more important for you. PETCO and PetSmart continue to offer grooming training. They have been sponsors of PetGroomer.com for many years and they list many of their job openings in the PetGroomer.com Classified Ads. If you cannot afford a school, home study or find an apprenticeship, their career path with training may be ideal for you. Even if money is not a determining factor for your education choice, working in a corporate environment may be right for you. Clearly the corporate stores offer some of the best employee benefits in the pet grooming industry. In fact, you should know one sad fact about benefits for employed groomers. Thousands of groomers work for independents that offer little or virtually no benefits except those required by law. If benefits such as healthcare are important to you, your employment choices will narrow quickly. Some independents do offer benefits, but they are a minority.
BUILD A PROFESSIONAL GROOMING LIBRARY
Every professional groomer has a library of grooming books and DVD’s for reference. The best news is that some of the grooming industry’s finest groomers are now publishing DVD’s and writing reference books of superior quality. There are so many breeds and mixed breeds to learn and remember you cannot expect to learn all of them in school. You never know when your employer will ask you to groom a rare breed. The phone can ring at anytime and suddenly you have an appointment to groom a breed for the first time. You realize that you don't even have a grooming reference library to fall back upon. That's stress, unnecessary stress. You have to ask yourself, “Should I even groom a pet where I have no training in the breed?” Build a library. Books, DVD’s and Streaming Media can be read and/or watched again and again. It’s a very wise and essential investment in your career. As an
employer you can use your library when training employees and providing a method of reinforcement training. We suggest you have your reference materials available where you work. For DVDs you can use a laptop or personal DVD player if a TV with DVD player is not available. Beat the stress! Build your grooming library!
SCHOLARSHIPS & GRANTS
Scholarships are very uncommon in the pet grooming industry. In 2006 PetGroomer.com did organize over $40,000 in scholarships with the support of many schools in the U.S. Many applied, and many were turned away of course. We have no plans at present for another round, but keep checking in with us. All is not lost. We suggest you check with GroomTeam USA and Barkleigh Productions for any available scholarships, as well as our message board at PetGroomer.com. We do occasionally receive notices of scholarships by schools. If they are actively available you will find them listed on the GroomerTALK™ Message Board. Grants sponsored by members of the grooming industry are rare. Once again check the resources above. You may find grants available to assist with starting a grooming business. Contact the Small Business Administration and research available grants and their requirements. Most grants require a specific purpose or target candidate. For example, we've seen numerous grants for women opening a small business. Also, we've seen rehabilitation oriented grants and tuition assistance from battered women groups. Therefore, check locally with state and local government and appropriate groups. Next we move onto another important topic. Money! How much can you make as a pet groomer?
PET GROOMER WAGES
Because there are many career paths in pet grooming, there are broad differences in earnings. It is a matter of choice. Some employed pet groomers earn less than $20,000 a year while many others make $30,000 to $70,000 a year (prior taxes). Self-employment incomes are just as diverse, but may go higher when owners choose to grow large businesses. Some groomers establish burgeoning businesses and add new departments such as retail, training, boarding, daycare and other services. We call these “pet centers” and they are among our most motivated clientele following The Madson Management System™ in From Problems to Profits. They derive personal incomes from their businesses ranging from $100,000 to $250,000 a year. Highly-motivated, hardworking employees of pet superstore chains have reported gross wages of $80,000 to more than $100,000 a year in our GroomerTALK Community℠ but that is not the norm. What’s important is that the pet grooming industry offers you the possibility to earn as much as you want if you willing to work diligently and grow your business or the department you manage. This is good news for the many career seekers wondering if grooming can replace their existing incomes from occupations outside of grooming. In this section we are going to help you understand what is required to earn the various ranges of incomes other than education and experience. We want to share a strange quirk in pet care occupations when money is the topic. We have been shamed, as others have, for being concerned about how much one can earn. In the minds of those shaming us we are here to be servants unto pets that need us and money shouldn’t be involved even though they finally admit it does have its place. We don’t ascribe to that mindset. Profitability is good for our industry in many ways. Don’t be ashamed to expect a comfortable living from grooming, and share your wisdom to help others. The intent to earn a good living from pet care is not based in greed. Of course the joy of grooming isn’t “all about the money” but how can we be there for pet owners and their pets if we cannot cover our cost of living, and maintain modern businesses? Our clients wanted us to be prosperous because they depended upon us, and we maintained a first-class operation with the best equipment for the comfort of people and pets. We could also make more donations. The poorly mendicant mindset holds pet grooming back from more professional recognition. We know pet groomers with incomes adequate to buy new homes, raise large families and send their children to college. Yes, it can be done if that is what you are wondering. The higher the income the more important it is for you to possess productivity skills and business acumen derived from industry experience. On the other end we know groomers satisfied with modest incomes and simple lifestyles.

Again, your accountant and lawyer will be very helpful in this part of the investigation. Client Records. The client list is a critical factor. In the next section we will review a system to help establish a better value of the client list. We have experienced sellers with almost no client records and yet selling their businesses for tens of thousands of dollars. If a grooming business doesn’t have excellent client records you are at risk and the selling price should reflect this serious deficit. Obtain the following documents for businesses in which you have a serious interest. Client Records. Does the business keep a client list with service histories? It is one of most important assets of the business. Many grooming business owners easily throw around the size of their client base, like "I have 1,000 regular clients." What is "regular?" There are no rules in the pet industry. Our opinion this. If pet owners don’t schedule grooming appointments at least 2 times a year, and you may want to up that to 4 times a year, we do not consider them as being valuable to the purchase of the business. Examine every client’s record for their repeat appointment frequency and separate them those that are entirely random, those that come in 4 or less times a year and finally those that schedule 5 or more times a year. The latter are the ones you can best count on for future cash flow, and these are the ones that back the asking price of the business. All too often we have seen claims of 1,000 clients or 2,500 clients and after a review of the client records we discovered that less than 50% of them came in regularly for grooming. Sometimes the records even showed a substantial number of pet owners had not returned in over a year. If they are not regular clients be realistic and understand that random customers add little value and potential for your business. You can use your study of the records as a negotiating tool if this happens to you. It’s very common. Bank Accounts. A list of all business accounts. Asset List. Asset list of all real estate, equipment, tools and supplies including intangible assets like trademarks and licenses.
Real and Personal Property: Documents such as mortgages, deeds, leases, appraisals, loans and insurance policies. Sales Records. You want the back up sales records that correlate with the financial records and tax returns. Advertising and Promotions: Obtain copies of past and present advertising, brochures and Buyer's Guide ads. Inventory Receipts. If you are purchasing inventory, check a list of inventory and examine ALL inventory to ensure it is still worthy of selling based on condition or product dating. Supplier List. You want a list of all sources the owner uses to obtain supplies, tools, equipment and other vendors. Employee Records. When you are going to employ existing employees you need their personnel files including any benefits information, payroll records etc. Licenses and Permits. You need to have all certificates, permits and licenses issued by federal, state or local agencies. You must evaluate your chances for successfully owning and managing the business you may purchase. That means fully understanding how the business was setup and run until it became available for sale. Can you fulfill the management system running it now? Will the owner provide assistance including consultation assistance for a period of time after the sale is complete? Will the present owner really be able to persuade most of the existing clientele to stay with the business? Oh yes, does your contract of sale ensure that the seller won't open a competing new business in the same trade?
VALUING AN EXISTING BUSINESS
Is the selling price fair and reasonable? If the seller hasn’t had their business appraised by a reputable commercial business opportunity appraiser their asking price is probably what they would like to get; it’s as simple as that. It may be worth more, or less. Don’t expect most grooming business sellers to show you the results of a formal appraisal. However, you can still order one on your own with the agreement of the seller. Appraisers generally require copies of the last 3 tax returns for the business. That’s where many business owners halt the appraisal process and don’t disclose. Some may show you bookkeeping data. That is never the same thing. Bookkeeping data is not the same as tax returns filed under penalty of perjury. Is it then any wonder why appraisers won’t value a business without its tax returns? If all you can get is bookkeeping data attempt to rectify the number of regular clients with the sales income. Here’s how you can do that quickly. First, how many clients does the seller have? Second, what was the total sales income for grooming services generated by those clients? For example, we saw a classified
ad saying 5,000 regular clients come with the sale of their business, and last year their gross sales income for grooming was $75,000. What? Do the math. Divide the sales income by the clients, in this case, $75,000 divided by 5,000. Do you see the problem? The result is $15. Each client is only spending $15 a year on grooming services. No way. The 5,000 clients figure is actually more like 500 clients spending about $150 a year. That’s a 1,000 percent overstatement. The seller is probably not lying intentionally and does have 5,000 clients on record. However, the vast majority of them have not patronized the business in years. Only the current regular clients add value to the purchase price! Are there more variables in valuing a business for sale? Indeed there are. You are purchasing their equipment and leasehold improvements, and these need to be stated in the contract of sale in fine detail. Perhaps you are buying a mobile business. If vehicles are included in the sale, these are important assets adding value to the business. In a commercial location you may be purchasing a nice long lease. But what if the lease is about to face renewal. Will the rent jump? It could. Check it out. Sometimes there are alarming leaps in high growth areas. Beware the seller telling you what the landlord will do. Always talk directly with the landlord before you purchase a business in a commercial location under a rent or lease basis. Grooming businesses that have successfully operated for many years develop "goodwill" in their community, and this “intangible” can be appraised and purchased. We took part in a business sale where the logo and goodwill was appraised by three certified commercial appraisers at over $80,000. You know that business was owned by one smart groomer. If you are not going to require an appraisal, or you simply cannot get one from the seller, remain skeptical without plenty of evidence. Follow our instructions to determine how many clients you really are getting with the purchase. It may take hours spent onsite to go through the records, just do it. Value the used equipment, furniture, fixtures, sign and other assets included with the sale. Does the business have much goodwill and recognition in the community? Ask around if you must. Most important, we strongly recommend you calculate a profit/loss projection for the business. The most popular way is to use Pet Grooming Business Plan Helper & Sampler by Grooming Business in a Box®. You can use its income and expense projection worksheets to fill in actual bookkeeping data provided by the seller. You can then input what you think the income and expenses will be under your management. Now you will know with far more confidence if you can make the profit adequate to recoup the purchase of the business. Now you are buying a business like a pro and perhaps saving yourself plenty of money. You can also use your project as a negotiating devise for the final purchase price. On the other hand, we suggest sellers prepare a business plan for potential buyers. You just may find a buyer more motivated when you supply
000 after deducting operating expenses. This can be especially important if you are purchasing your first business. Oh yes. It may be appropriate for other industries. For example. The buyer is taking some risk should the seller depart early. but it has been done successfully. but rarely grooming. and a year later decided to re-enter the industry and opened up a new grooming business near the one they sold! Yikes! Will they take back some of the clientele? Talk to your attorney about non-competition clauses in the contract of sale. Realize that some of the clientele may be lost when the previous owner departs. We are only talking about the “business opportunity” and not real estate included in the sale. Backed by nearly 20 years experience as consultants we have seen wellestablished grooming businesses with excellent goodwill and other factors sell for 2 times the net operating income. You can estimate the costs to startup and then compare to purchasing a business. As a management consultant of nearly 20 years I have only seen a handful of grooming businesses sell at that level. economy is sluggish.000 a year shows net operating income of $55. the same business earning $100. NON-GROOMERS PURCHASING A BUSINESS Most career seekers entering the grooming industry plan to groom pets. Our biggest concern for new grooming business owners are those that plan to own and manage. If you have never accounted for the labor costs of grooming staff you may be surprised. Experienced groomers ask for 55% to 60% and commissions and payroll taxes still have to be accounted for! Pet grooming is labor-intensive. it has been our experience that some pet grooming business owners are lax in maintaining well-organized documentation and if that is so. Ideally accountants advise payroll costs to be 30% to 40% of the sales income. It does happen. be very careful. you are at risk. Even graduates fresh from grooming school want 50% commission. We finally achieved that level of operation but it took years. Accurate numbers don’t lie! But the industry can charge only what the market of pet owners will bear. It doesn’t mean that pet groomers are overpaid! It means that pet owners should actually be paying more for grooming services. Generally they need 2 full-charge groomers working fulltime and a busy bathing department doing plenty of bath-only pets before they can entirely resort to a management position and support a steady paycheck as manager. they may find that their employees earn more than them.
