The main objective of these talks (and therefore the scripts of these talks), is to stimulate thinking. Sensible, rational and logical thinking. So, my message, think, think & think! Be sensible, be rational and be logical.

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

Please Note
1. I have had the great privilege, (since Aug 2010), of presenting talks on the weekly Radio Program Culture of Islam [Every Friday 8 to 8.30 pm, Radio Sri Lanka - FM 97.4] 2. Since these are Radio Talks, I refer to, or address the audience as listeners 3. I am well aware that the audience to these talks would consist of people belonging to a variety of faiths. So as to make people of all faiths feel included, I very often use words and names that are common to all religions. 4. For these reasons, I use the name GOD, as well as Abraham, Moses, Jesus etc as well as the names Allah, Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam), Moosa (Alaihis Salaam), Easa (Alaihis Salaam) etc 5. Muslims by habit usually say Sallallahu Alaihiwasallam, when the name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned, and Alaihis Salaam' when the name of a Prophet is mentioned. However, in these series of talks I have reduced the use of these prayers & sayings to the bare minimum. 6. Muslims, also by habit, use a number of Arabic prayers or sayings, such as Alhamdulillah, Insha Allah and so on. Again, I have reduced the use of these prayers or sayings to the bare minimum. 7. Sometimes I have to write Arabic words in the English script. I have devised my own way of writing Arabic in English, as follows;

93 The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

Dear Friends, Assalamu Alaikum, Recently I watched on YouTube, an interesting panel discussion on the topic Mathematics and Religion Well, that I thought was an extraordinary or an out of the ordinary topic. It was an interesting combination of two subjects, which we would think are far removed from one another. Mathematics and Religion. But then when we think about it and listen to these learned erudite scholars who made up this distinguished panel, we realize how much light Mathematics throws on this all encompassing topic Religion! One of the learned speakers explained that Mathematics was the study of infinity, and he also brought about the interesting point that the concept of infinity was introduced to man through Religion and the manner it was introduced was through the concept of God. God is infinitely mighty infinitely powerful, God is infinitely wise, God is Creator and as Creator is infinitely creative, God controlled everything and He controlled everything in infinite ways and God possesses infinite super attributes. In fact this speaker explained that; God possesses infinite attributes and every one of these infinite attributes is infinite in scope I would like to repeat that statement. God possesses infinite attributes and every one of these infinite attributes is infinite in scope I thought that was an amazing statement. It confirmed and reiterated every phrase in the Holy Quran that described God or Allah. Now as humans, we cannot see God, or hear God or touch God our senses are incapable of detecting God, but then we have this inner feeling that there is a God. God has to be present. The Quran is from God. The Quran is a guide to detecting the Signs of God. In the Quran these Signs of God or signs of Allah are referred to as the Aayaths of Allah. We have to read these Signs of God or the Aayaths of Allah and then intellectually work out the presence of the attributes of God and thus intellectually work out the presence of God. It is a huge intellectual exercise and God guides those who are seek and those who are humble. So how do we detect God? We detect him through His attributes. Like I said, God possesses infinite attributes and each attribute is infinite in scope. The Quran describes some of these attributes. Muslims are aware of these attributes at least by name. We are told that there are 100 attributes and these are commonly referred to as the Asma Ul Husna or the beautiful Names of Allah.

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

Actually the number of attributes is infinite. We are told that the Quran describes or mentions 100 of these attributes; actually the Quran mentions or describes many more. The names of attributes that Muslims are aware of are; Ar Rahman The Benevolent Ar Raheem the Merciful Al Malik The King Al Quddoos the Holy Al Azeez the Mighty, and so on But in this list of 100 there are many attributes many well known Names of Allah that are missing or have not been included For example the Name Rabb is missing in the 100 Names of Allah that we recite as the Asma Ul Husna. Incidentally the word Rabb appears 980 times in the Holy Quran. There are 72 dhuas or invocations that address or beseech God with His name or His attribute Rabbanaa! I recently read a book published by the Rahmathul Aalameen Research Center in Karachi that had listed names of 319 attributes of Allah that are mentioned or described in the Holy Quran. The Quran Aayaths that refers to each of these attributes is also mentioned. So when we say that God possesses infinite attributes and every attribute is infinite in scope, then it follows that each statement or it should even be correct to say that each word in the Quran is infinite in meaning. Is that correct? Now, when I read the Quran I keep that thought at the back of my head, and then I find meanings become clearer. There are many things we have taken for granted. What has happened is that we have been seeing these wonderful things from the time we were born, so we have become desensitized to the wonder of everything around us. The Aayaths in the Quran draws our attention to these wonders. So without even thinking we say yeah, that is correct, so what? It is only when we actually begin to think, and think deeply at the meanings and implications of each and every word, and remember that the meanings of the word is not a simple brush off but is infinite in depth, then we begin to realize the wonders of the creation and wondrous attributes of the creator that are reflected by this creation. In tonights talk, I wish to point out some of these amazing wonders. Some Aayaths of the Quran which we lightly brushed off as some light meaning, some light poetry actually has some deep deep profound meaning the fact is that we do not even think about it. I am amazed that experts in certain fields make what are known as expert concise statements, and the Quran expresses those same sentiments, but in better words, in better settings and the tragedy, we do not appreciate the depth of those words as expressed in the Quran. Let me explain. Let me begin by describing Examples 1, 2 & 3. Three profound statements in the Quran.

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

Recently there were 3 profound discoveries that shook the world of science, the world of Cosmology, but we find those three statements better described in the Holy Quran. For centuries and centuries, man has been thinking or has been convinced that the Universe has always been there. The space, the energies, the matter has always been there, and it is through this random chaos, through the interaction of these ingredients that has brought about the Sun the Planets, the Solar System, the many other solar systems, the many Galaxies and so on. But then, we hear of this Big Bang theory. There is compelling evidence to prove it. According to this theory, the Universe came out of nothing. This happened around 13.7 billion years ago, and the event is called the Big Bang The Big Bang theory explains that 13.7 billion years ago there was nothing. When we say nothing we mean no space, no time, not even any matter, because if there was matter there would have to be space to accommodate it. Then suddenly there was this Big Bang though we call it a Big Bang there was no sound, and from an infinitesimally small dot they say less that a trillionth of even a mm, arose this huge Universe. Cosmologists refer to this dot as a Singularity Somehow out of this dot or this Singularity; came everything. Over 70,000 million million million Stars and we are still counting. These Stars are clustered in over 100 Billion Galaxies, spread over a distance of 700 Billion Trillion Kilometers at the very least. Now this Big Bang theory is in three parts; Part 1. there was this Big Bang, out of a singularity came everything that we know of the entire Universe around 13.7 Billion years ago Part 2 Ever since the Big Bang when the Universe came in to being, the Universe is expanding it has been continuously expanding for around 13.7 Billion years and continues to expand, and Part 3 the Universe cannot go on expanding forever and forever, there has to be a give point. So at some time in the future, the Universe would roll back This roll back phenomena is termed the Big Crunch So in short, The Universe was formed out of a dot a singularity, Now the Universe is continuously expanding and In the future this expansion will stop and there will be a rolling back of the universe. Now let me read to you 3 Aayaths from the Holy Quran. 1. The Past - Quoting from 21:30

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

Do the rejecters not observe that the heavens and the earth were a joined entity, then We parted them?

2. The Present (51:47)

3. The Future (21:104)

and the sky we constructed it with might and definitely (or surely) we (are) surely (its) expanders

the day we fold up the skies like (the) folding (of) the scrolls for records

Is that not how the Big Bang theory describes what would happen when the limits of this expansion is reached. Does this not take us all by surprise? Three profound statements that encapsulates the Big Bang theory! We then have this research that shows that over these 13.7 Billion years ago, the Universe went through many phases. Earth was formed around 9 Billion years ago, then life appeared on Earth, the animal Kingdom evolved and then there is this un-explainable break in the chain of evolution between what is considered the animals from which Humans have to have evolved, that is the Primates and the Humans themselves. So, there were billions of years where Earth has been present, undergoing many phases, life has been developing, life has been evolving but Man was just not present! Now, what does the Quran say? (Surah Dhahr 76:1)

Has there not been over Man a long period of Time, when he was nothing - (not even) mentioned?

Again, this Aayath in the Quran does indicate that Man was placed on Earth. So, could it not be that all animals evolved, but man was special or is special, he arrived on Earth or was placed on Earth. (002:030)

and when your Rabb said to the Angels I am going to place a vicegerent (Khaleefah) on Earth

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

Do not these Aayaths make a lot of sense? Man was not on this Earth for billions of years. The entire Animal Kingdom has evolved. However, man did not evolve from the Animal Kingdom But man has been designed using the blueprint of the most evolved of Animals, and in addition to which man is enjoying superior features, features that did not evolve, but features that have been gifted to man. There are 8 such features described in the Quran; They are the; 1. The Baswar or the faculty of processing what we see 2. The Samgha or the faculty of processing what we hear 3. Afidha or the faculty of processing our feelings or emotions 4. The Qalb or the Heart an intuitive faculty 5. The Swudhoor or the Chest a faculty that receives or holds knowledge 6. The Aql or intelligence 7. The Nafs or the perception of self or even described as ego 8. The Ruh or the Soul. No other animal from the animal kingdom have been provided or blessed with these faculties. These faculties did not evolve but have been shaped and gifted by God to all human beings. Allah informs us in the Quran; (059:014)

24. He is Allah, the Creator, the Evolver, the Fashioner. His are the most beautiful names.

Are these not simple words, deep in meaning, heavily laden with meaning are they not infinite in scope? When we observe or compare Humans with the Animal Kingdom, we find many differences. Humans just stand out. In many ways we share features with the animal Kingdom but in many ways we are far superior to the whole Kingdom. We dominate them, we subjugate them, we dominate Earth, and we have colonized this Planet Earth. Let me highlight some differences relating them to God and Gods purposes. First, a brief description of the Earth, the planet inhabited by both Animals and Humans. The Universe is described as matter and energy in dimensions of space and time. We also have life, death and design. Where there is design there had to be a designer, there has to be a purpose. Now getting on to the differences between Animals and Man. 1. The Universe and Earth is full of beauty. When we visit any natural landscape we are enraptured by the beauty surrounding us. A friend was telling me that when man visits mountainous areas, he loves the scenery and the resulting ambience so much that he wishes he could build his house there.

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

When he visits river valleys he is again enraptured by the beauty there and the resulting ambience. Again he wishes he could build his house there. When he visits the beaches, again he is enraptured by the beauty that surrounds him and the ambience; he wishes he could build his house there and so on. Similarly, when we look at the Night sky on a really dark, clear night, we are again enraptured by the beauty of the Night sky. We just want to lay a mat out in the open night and watch the night sky till we fall asleep. Now the Universe or Earth is so full of beauty, but it is only the Human being that enjoys or appreciates this beauty. We have never seen or heard of any animal that appreciates the beauty of nature. Does this not give the message that the purpose of this beauty is for the appreciation of Humans? When we see the beauty of these landscapes there is this natural urge that gives us a longing, a longing to just sit and to meditate that is why we want to build our houses in these landscapes. So then, I ask this question, what is it that we want to meditate about? What is it that this beautiful environment urging us to do what is the message written in to the designing of the Earth and the sky? Do we not have this natural urge to meditate or to think about the purpose of the Universe, the purpose of our life on this Earth, meditate on what could the future hold, meditate on what could happen after death, meditate on who could possibly be this great creator this great designer and also having this inner desire to get to know this great power and be on the right side of him? So does not this natural beauty this landscape beauty and our natural inner desire have some connection, some meaning? Could it not mean that we are on this Earth to meditate on the truth of everything? Could this not be the purpose of our lives? No animal enjoys or even possesses these two great faculties the faculty of appreciating the beauty of nature and the faculty of wanting to meditate on the truths of this world, to work out for ourselves the truths of life and death. 2. Man is superior to Animals in many ways; a. Animals live in specific environments. For example the Polar Bear Lives in the Arctic, the Zebra lives in the grasslands of Africa they would not be able to live in another environment. Man on the other hand can live in almost every environment on Earth. We have the knack of creating our own cocoon or our own homes the environment that we want. In fact there is a Town named North Pole, in Alaska; North Pole is a small city in the Fairbanks North Star Borough, Alaska, United States. It is part of the Fairbanks, Alaska metropolitan statistical area. The U.S. Census Bureau estimated its population as of July 1, 2009 at 2,226. It is not the actual North Pole. It is 1700 miles away from the Geographic North Pole but the point I wish to draw attention to is that even in this extreme or human unfriendly environment there is a thriving city. This city has recorded temperatures of below (minus) 700 C. So, in other words, humans have the run of Earth - they could go anywhere they wanted to.

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

b. All animals communicate but the communication skills of humans are phenomenal. Human beings can learn and communicate what they learn and this learning can be communicated to future generations, it can be archived and retrieved and encrypted many generations later no other animal displays this skill. c. All animals have a sense of what is right and what is wrong but that perception is limited and confined. However Humans possess a very advanced intuition of what is right and what is wrong. These perceptions can be changed, can be built upon and is commonly referred to as human values. These values have such appeal and force that many human populations have gone to war to defend these values and many human populations have got wiped out merely for having defended these values. d. Human beings possess a sense of shame and in fact are contrastingly different to animals in that they dress. We say we dress to hide our shame. Our dress is also a statement of our identity. We even use the hides and the skins of other animals to clothe ourselves. Does this just not demonstrate the superiority of humans on this planet? e. Humans possess a sense of humor no animal displays this advanced sense. f. All animals fear fire, humans have learnt to manage fire is this not amazing? g. All animals eat a class of food we have herbivores, frugivores, omnivore, and carnivores and so on. Man eats all classes of foods, but man is finicky, food should be clean, food should be fresh, even in meats only sections of meat are chosen, the rest which we call offal is discarded. And then Man cooks his food. It looks like man is the only animal then has such an advanced sense of taste. The cooking the mixing, the fragrances it is only man that goes through such lengths to ensure food is hygienic as well as tasty. Now let me recite to you one Aayath of the Quran that describes all that I have mentioned above and more remember each word in the Quran is infinite in scope.

[017:070] We have honoured the sons of Adam; and we carried them on land and sea; and we have provided them of the good things and conferred on them special favours, above a great part of our creation.

[017:070] We have honoured the sons of Adam; - there are many ways that man has been honored above all of creation I discussed a few of them. and we carried them on land and sea; - could refer to our God given ability to live and to move anywhere on Earth does any other animal make its own boats or vehicles to move across water? and we have provided them of the good things could refer to the many types of food we consume, but we only consume those that are clean hygienic and dished out to our tastes!

The Quran - It's Simply Amazing!

and conferred on them special favours, above a great part of our creation are there not just innumerable number of such special favors? This weeks talk was about the attributes of God, of Allah As I quoted from the Panel discussion Mathematics and Religion; God possesses infinite attributes and every one of these infinite attributes is infinite in scope Insha Allah next week I would like to discuss the qualities of man and how we could improve on them.
