Spiritual Discipline

A human being is composed by three components: the physical being, the emotion and will, and the spiritual being. The strongest out of the three should be the spiritual being. Since man fell into sin, the emotion and will is the driving force of humans. The flesh become very hungry for the things that appeals to the emotion and the strong will, which could be found in every human being, would bring the physical body to do whatever the soul wants. To free the physical body from the emotional bondage and to bring it back to its real purpose of the glorification of God, the old self should be crucified with Christ and live within the realm of the spiritual body. Not in a sense of ethereal life, but a life based on the guidance of God. As this process continues, the spiritual body starts as a baby too. It requires food to develop and that food would be the Word of God “… man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God.” The Word becomes an intake to the spiritual body as it is not only mere words written on a piece of paper but it is a living Word. With time and guidance from a mentor, the spiritual man would become strong and it will be the driving force to the physical body. Emotion and will would be under the submission of the spiritual body and then the human being as an entire would be a Christ-like person inwardly and outwardly. Yet everyone is prone to be tempted to sin. Even Jesus, the Son of God, was not excluded on the possible prey list of the Devil. He was tempted three times each according to the temptation that every human would face: the lust of flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life. The lust of the flesh and the lust of the eyes would easily ensnare a person into sin when he is not guided by the spiritual-self because the body would submits to the will and emotions. The pride of life would not affect a person when he knows that his purpose in this world is for the glorification of God and that everything that he does is nothing compared to what God can do. Like Job, he knows that God is the one who gives and He has the right to take. We are nothing but dust and therefore there is nothing to be proud of. To strengthen the spiritual man, it takes the power of the Holy Spirit as the guidance. He would speak softly as a conscious to gently remind you of what decisions to take. It takes a quiet spirit and a serene mind to hear what he has to say and prayer to speak to Him. Start the day with prayer and a request for Him to actively be a guardian of the days of your life. Start the day with the godly mind of whatever things are true, honest, just, lovely, of good report, virtues, and praise. Be friend righteous people because they are the ones who would bring you up too. Live with the spiritual man as the driving force of your life because when you live in spirit and in truth all the days of your life would prosper.
