Assignment: Research Blog Due Date: March 1, with mini-deadlines before Turn in: By sharing link Assignment Description and Goals
Your assignment is to create a blog that is related in topic to the area of inquiry you chose in the previous unit. This should be real, public blog: a blog someone not in a class would want to read. Specifically, you should think of the organizations and groups you identified in your previous assignment, the personal learning network, as audience members for your blog. As Rheingold describes in Net Smart, your goal for this blog will be to find a public voice that lets you interact with people in the world who are also interested in the area of inquiry that you have been tracing. For the purposes of this assignment, you should think of a blog as "not a genre but a platform" (Garza). What I mean by this is that your blog posts should contain many different kinds of writing. As Rheingold suggests, one important way of contributing to online knowledge is to read existing texts closely and to share reactions to existing texts on the web. In order to help you try out different ways of reading and responding, there will be several required posts, which we will explore strategies for in class. You can approach other posts in any way you like. It might help to think of the following as goals for the blog overall: • focused: As we will discuss in class, this is not a personal blog, it is a blog focused on a particular area of inquiry. Remember that focus in how you name, style, and position it. • public: This is a real, public piece of writing. Remember that it is important to summarize, analyze, and interact carefully with the pieces you read because the authors might just show up and comment on your page. It happens more than you might think. You’ll also want to weigh questions like whether or not you should use your name on the site. • an exploration: Your blog should be a place to invent ideas, to generate thinking, and to document and respond to sources that are discussing your area of interest. The goal of this assignment is both to help you develop a public voice in response to what you are learning from your personal learning network, and to help you continue inventing ideas and questions to take up in future writing.
• • • Each of your posts should have a unique, interesting title. Please DO NOT name a blog posting “Summary post” or “Argument analysis post” or anything sad like that You will be asked to comment on classmates’ blogs at different points in the process. This is a very important way to participate and help others’ improve. The length of your posts will vary, as is the case with most blogs.
