you’re listening to 90.3 WKNJ-FM, Union, New Jersey, and I’m _____________ with the news. In Local News… This was a first for Black River Middle School in Chester…. It was bring your own digital device day. Students and teachers wanted to see what it was like if an electronic device was used in the classroom. The vice principal of the school, Brad Currie, says, “This is the future of education, and we have to change with it.” To save money, Currie wants to provide every student a device just like a textbook. Apps on the devices, like Google Moon, help students live in the digital world and are great learning tools. Adding charging stations and safe storage areas for these devices would have to added to the school. Before these devices become a part of the daily classroom activity, there are still policies that need to be adjusted and made more precise.

A little effort goes a long way for this young boy…

Peyton (PAY-TON) Zitelli (ZEE-TELL-EE) is a 19-month-old from Boonton (BOOTIN) who was diagnosed with a rare childhood cancer. For her weekly treatment, The Zitelli(ZEE-TELL-EE) family drives to a facility in Philadelphia. Her 8-year-old neighbor, Matthew Santana (SAN-TAN-A), wanted to do something for her. Matthew felt really sorry for Peyton (PAY-TON) when she lost all of her hair because of chemotherapy. So Matthew decided to shave his head. With the help of his father, Ray Santana, they create a Facebook event called Pledges for Peyton. Since Matthews effort has raised so much awareness, the event had to be moved from his garage to the Blackthorn Restaurant & Irish Pub on Route 46 in Parsippany (PARSIP-PA-NEE). The event will take place this Saturday from 3 to 5 p.m. Wristbands will be sold at the door. Anyone who purchases a wristband will be given 10 percent off their food bill and happy hour drink prices.

In National News… Now you might have to wait until the following Monday to mail letters, credit card bills, and subscriptions…

The United States Postal Service plans to cancel mail delivery on Saturdays. For everything except packages, the Postal Service is cutting back to five-day-a-week deliveries. The department has lost almost 16 billion dollars last year because of the Internet commerce. It plans to save 2 billion dollars every year if they proceed with the Saturday cutback. Things have changed and the Internet is free. Even though some feel remorse for the ending of Saturday mail, most people don’t get anything of interest on that day. Many people younger than 40, think the mail isn’t important and is an ancient way of communicating. At the end of August, Saturday mail delivery will end.

In effect since Sunday, Chicago police officers will not show up in person to 911 calls. These calls include vehicle theft, garage burglary, or simple assault. This change also covers crime where the offender is not on the scene and if the victim is safe with no need of medical attention. This is because Chicago wants to have officers free if there are more serious crimes to deal with. The Chicago Police Department’s Alternate Response Section will now receive the 911 calls from dispatchers. This section has officers on for light duty. If this change is effective, there will be comparable to 40 officers freed up. The change shouldn’t effect or be difficult for residents, but more for crime victims.

Across five villages, around 100 homes were destroyed or damaged. The death count is currently at nine people, including one child. Several other people are still missing. Strong aftershocks are keeping local villagers from going back to the island and most are staying in short-term shelters on higher ground.
