More Fil-Ams voted for Obama in 2012
ABS CBN News | WASHINGTON D.C., 2/3/2013 - Filipino-American voters broke more heavily for President Barack Obama during his re-election victory last year than his more historic 2008 win, an exit poll by the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund (AALDEF) revealed recently. The exit poll showed 65 percent of Fil-Ams voted for Obama to a 2nd term in the White House; while 32 percent voted for his Republican rival Mitt Romney in the November 2012 presidential elections. The President thus fared much better than the 50 percent of Fil-Am voters he won over versus the 46 percent of his GOP rival Sen. John McCain in the 2008 elections. The result surprised many

t was barely six in the morning when the captain expertly maneuvered the inter-island vessel into a narrow berth assigned by the harbor pilot. The cool night breeze reluctantly surrendered to the gentle warmth of a rising tropical sun. But the rebel commander kept his jacket on, collar upright, and pulled down the brim of his sports cap even lower. Fully awake and alert, Commander Gusi waited for several minutes, surveying the dock yard carefully before joining the stream of sleepy passengers disembarking the vessel. He looked around for suspicious characters but saw none. He spotted his sister’s white Toyota. She was not there but had sent a driver to fetch him. “Good morning, sir,” the driver was very polite. “Good morning,” Gusi eased into the front passenger seat. “Thank you for picking me up.” “No problem, sir. Ma’am said to bring you to Perpetual Help hospital. She is waiting for you in the ICU.”

by Jose Katigbak, Philstar. com | WASHINGTON, 2/7/2013 – China’s use of non-military maritime vessels to advance its sovereignty claims in the East and South China Seas is disrupting regional security in ways that could very well lead to conflict, the Center for New American Security said. A CNAS article by Zachary Hosford and Ely Ratner said the United States needed to develop a more coherent and comprehensive strategy to stem the tide of Chinese coercion and adventurism. Rather than thinking about security cooperation primarily in bilateral contexts, US officials should reach out to Australia, Japan, Singapore and even allies in Europe to identify specific areas for multilateral cooperation with less advanced militaries in the Asia Pacific. The US, in concert with major powers in the region and the international community, should not sit idly by if China continues its revisionist efforts to expand Chinese territory at the expense of regional stability, the article said. It said Chinese maritime law enforcement ships have been harassing legitimate foreign commercial and military vessels, occupying waters that surround disputed land features and making provocative incursions into the territorial waters of neighboring states. These maritime law enforcement vessels have played a leading role as the tip of the spear of Chinese coercion, it said. Over the last decade, China has substantially modernized the capabilities of its numerous maritime agencies: the Border Control Department’s China Maritime Police, the Maritime Safety Administration, the Fisheries Law Enforcement Command, the General Administration of Customs and the State Oceanic Administration (particularly its China Maritime Surveillance, or CMS).

Born in North Africa, Augustine studied in Carthage, becoming an accomplished but dissolute orator. After converting to Manichaeism, a guiltfree religion, he was called to the imperial court in Milan to serve as an opponent to the Christian Bishop Ambrose. But when the Empress Justina sent imperial guards to clear out a basilica where Augustine’s mother, Monica, was worshipping, her constant prayers and the witness of Ambrose won him over to Christianity. Serving in Hippo in 430 AD, Bishop Augustine urged the Roman garrison to negotiate with the Vandal King Genseric, but they proudly refused. He passed up a chance to escape on a ship sent to rescue him by the Pope, and stayed by the side of his people. Christian Duguay directed the film, and the cast includes Franco Nero, Johannes Brandrup, Monica Guerritore and Alessandro Preziosi. Lý Thái Tông then married a peasant girl that he had met and she bore him a son. The emperor constructed the temple in gratitude for the gift of a son by erecting a pillar in the middle of a lotus pond, similar to the one he saw in the dream. The temple is built of wood on a single pillar, is designed to resemble a lotus blossom, which is a Buddhist symbol of purity,

New Training Guidebook For the Ultimate Marine Recruit
By Zena Sultana Babao American war hero Nick “Gunny Pop” Popaditch of Chula Vista, a retired gunnery sergeant and combat veteran of the U.S. Marine Corps, came out with his second and newest book called The Ultimate Marine Recruit Training Guidebook. His first book, a best-seller, was “Once a Marine: An Iraq War Tank Commander’s Inspirational Memoir of Combat, Courage, and Recovery”. Gunny Pop’s new book will make it easier for Marine recruits to undergo training. During basic training, new recruits are afraid, undergo stress, and become frustrated. This book will give them a head’s up about what lies ahead. “Going back to my own experience as a recruit,” Popaditch said, “the things you think you need to know showing up are not at all what you need to know.” For example, he said, recruits need to know that everything that happens to them in training happens for a reason. “It’s to make you better, to build courage, honor, commitment, and character – the building blocks of leadership.” He added that civilians can learn everything from Marines “because they are the best thinkers in the world.” Popaditch’ new book will also give ideas and inspiration to active Marines on how to stay in a shrinking service where only “a few good men” are needed. Two years ago, Lt. Gen. Richard Mills announced that the Marine Corps would cut four infantry battalions and 12 flying squadrons over a five year period. That would mean 20,000 Marines will be laid off. In order for a Marine to stay in the service one must be professionally qualified, personally qualified, and really be a top performer. The biggest cuts would fall on Marine Corps bases in North Carolina, with Camp Lejeune and the adjacent New River Base losing 5,800 personnel and Cherry Point Air Base losing 2,100. Three California Marine Bases: Camp Pendleton, Twenty-Nine Palms, and Miramar, would lose a total of 6,000 personnel.

ern Iraq to the streets of Baghdad. In April 2003, Popaditch’ unit helped topple Saddam Hussein’ statue in Baghdad’s Firdos Square. Worldwide attention focused on Popaditch after an Associated Press (AP) photographer captured a smiling photo of him smoking a cigar, standing on top of his tank in front of a statue of Saddam in downtown Baghdad, just before his unit helped tear it down. The photo, known worldwide as “The Cigar Marine” landed on the front pages of the world’s leading newspapers. In a combat action during the Operation Vigilant Resolve in Fallujah

Globe and Touch Mobile subscribers who want to know how to access the service can text or then send to 1343 free of charge. "It is hoped that by making 1343 Action Line available through texts, more cases of human trafficking will be reported and resolved," the CFO said. Gunny Pop was at the front and center of history as it was being made in one of our country’s fight for freedom. He was both in the Gulf War’s Desert Shield and Desert Storm in April 2004, Popaditch was hit on the head by fragments from a rocketpropelled grenade (RPG) and he almost lost his life. The blast blinded his right eye, and left him with only eight percent vision in his right eye. He had been engaged in combat inside the terrorist stronghold continuously for 36 hours before he was severely wounded. For his gallantry in action, and his honorable and patriotic service, Popaditch was awarded the Silver Star Medal, the Purple Heart, the Navy/ Marine Corps Achievement Medal with Combat “V”, and the Combat Action Ribbon. He was medically retired from the service in 2005. Videos of the attack are available on You Tube and in the website of his first book Once a Marine. This book, which holds an honor spot in the Marine Corps Professional Reading Program, also known as the Commander’s reading list, is recommended for every rank from Private to General. I have observed that to Nick Popaditch, service of country is a continuing endeavor. Dedication, honesty, self-sacrifice and continuing vigilance are the marks of the strength of his character. The investment bank projected that the Philippine peso will further appreciate to P35 against the greenback in 2014 and will go back to the P40 level in 2015.

In his new book, Popaditch wrote: “You will be confronted with a constant barrage of events and experiences that will scare you.” Through fear, recruits develop courage. Another one: “It is easy to say you are going to do the right thing. It’s entirely another thing to actually do it when the time comes.” Through stress, recruits develop honor. And another: “Success will be very infrequent during training, and very difficult to earn. You will never be praised, and rarely even encouraged; despite your best efforts, punished frequently.” Through frustration, recruits develop commitment. It took Popaditch six months to complete this book, which was written during his spare time. The 178page guidebook is being marketed to young adults and high school students who are interested in becoming Marines, or simply trying to figure out where to go in life. The book, published by Savas Beatie, has nearly sold out its first printing and a second printing is in the works.

Across the country, the defendants and their co-conspirators maintained more than 1,800 “drop addresses,” including houses, apartments, and post office boxes, which they used as the mailing addresses of the false identities. They created dozens of sham companies that did little or no legitimate business, obtained credit card terminals for the companies, and then ran up charges on the fraud cards. To accept payments in the form of credit cards, a business must establish a merchant account with an entity known as a merchant processor. The merchant processor provides the business with equipment to process credit cards, receives payments from credit card companies for credit cards run at the business, and deposits those payments, minus a fee, into the business’ bank account. Tradelines The defendants used sophisticated methods—including a network of black-market businesses called “tradelines” providers—to commit fraud. Tradelines come in two varieties: primary tradelines and authorized user tradelines. Primary tradelines are lines of credit in a credit history. If a credit card user has primary tradelines in good standing, it can have a significant impact on the user’s credit score, enabling the user to borrow more from credit card issuers. The defendants, however, trafficked in fraudulent primary tradelines. his month of February is American Heart month so we are focusing on the prevention of heart disease and stroke, major killers of Filipino Americans. Kalusugan Community Services obtained funding from the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute’s (NHLBI), Community Health Worker Health Disparities Initiative Awards Prevention Efforts, beginning March 2012 to June 2013 to implement the “Healthy Heart, Healthy Family” Program.
The grant was given through the New York University Center for Asian American Health and (NYU CSAAH) and Kalusugan Coalition, Inc (KC) to promote heart health by preventing and controlling heart disease heart disease risk factors among underserved and minority populations including Filipino Americans (FilAms). The funding supports programs that use promising and innovative approaches to integrate community health workers (CHWs) as key players in heart disease prevention efforts. NHLBI has developed a manual entitled, “Healthy Heart, Healthy Family” that provides all the information one need to put the heart health project into action in the community. Through this manual

TaskRabbit makes it easy to live smarter by providing skilled and trusted ‘TaskRabbits’ right in your neighborhood, who can help finish any task on that nagging to-do list. A two-way marketplace, TaskRabbit connects ‘TaskPosters,’ people who need extra help, with ‘TaskRabbits,’ a network of backgroundchecked and preapproved individuals who have the skills and time available to compete tasks. TaskRabbit promotes micro-entrepreneurship among its TaskRabbits by providing a platform to build a business based on their unique skills. “Los Angeles has many of the same characteristics as our current markets - Boston and San Francisco - distinct neighborhoods with a strong sense of community, a large pool of talented and entrepreneurial people and, of course, a population of time-strapped residents who can live smarter by utilizing TaskRabbit,” said Leah Busque, founder and chief executive officer of TaskRabbit. “We look forward to welcoming LA to the TaskRabbit community.” TaskRabbits can help with pretty much anything, but some common and interesting tasks include: • Grocery shopping and delivery • Wait in line for an iPad2 (or hot movie, sporting event or concert ticket) • Ikea furniture assembly • Build Earthquake Preparedness Supply Kit • Garage or closet organizing • Pet Sitting • Make wedding favors • Moving help TaskRabbit Los Angeles is open for tasking today and has TaskRabbits available in neighborhoods from Los Angeles to Orange County. My barber asked me, “If you were a Republican Senator, would you vote to confirm former Senator Chuck Hagel as Secretary of Defense?” “Absolutely YES! It makes no sense for a Republican Senator NOT to vote for his confirmation,” I responded. “Why?” he followed up. First, he was elected as a Republican in the Senate twice. He obtained over 56% of the votes in his first election, and over 84% in his second election. As a Senator, he was in the Armed Services Committee and he and his department would easily be accessible to the same committee. Another class is going on right Second, he is a Reaganite. able companies. His experiences in co-founding and running Vanguard Cellular, a mobile phone service carrier, and an investment firm would be plusses in managing an enterprise as large as the Defense Department especially in this Digital Age where Cyber warfare is an added component. Seventh, he was a media man who had an early experience as a radio newscaster and as a talk show host. He knows how to deal with the media and its thirst and hunger for news both in times of peace and war. Ninth, he was a beneficiary of the GI Bill and a strong advocate for veterans. He understands the needs of all the men and women in the uniformed services. Tenth, he is currently a professor at the Edmund Walsh School of Foreign Service at Georgetown University, Chairman of the Atlantic Council, and Co-Chairman of the President’s Intelligence Advisory Board. He knows, feels, and understands the security needs of America. Eleventh, former Defense Secretary Robert Gates, former Secretary of State Colin Powell, and former National Security Adviser Brent Scowcroft endorsed him. These are all Republicans in the security establishment. Nine other retired military officers; nine former U.S. Ambassadors including five former Ambassadors to Israel also endorsed him. Even Reaganite Pat Buchanan who is noted for his conservatism wants Hagel to be Secretary of Defense. Lastly, he speaks the truth. When he says that the Israeli lobby is very influential in Washington, D.C., he is telling the truth. Every lobbyist, legislator, advocate and organization engaged in influencing American policy knows it. I know it. I remember when we were forming an umbrella organization of Asian Businesses in the 1980s. We decided to name it APACC (Asian Pacific American Chamber of Commerce) because we wanted it to sound like AIPAC (American Israeli Public Affairs Committee), the most influential lobby group in Washington, D.C. In fact, President Reagan even rewarded us with a grant and called it “the fastest growing ethnic business group in the country.” I was its first Executive Director. Tom Dine, a former Peace Corps Volunteer in the Philippines, later led AIPAC as its Executive Director. He and I worked in the presidential campaign of the late Senator Ted Kennedy. In this part of the world, they remain, “the chosen people.” AIPAC touts itself as the premier advocacy group in the Capitol. While many organizations or lobby firms try to emulate it, I have yet to see to date anyone that could be close to being one. This does not mean that Hagel loves Israel less. He just loves the people of Israel and of America more. He feels that people need not sacrifice their lives for wars that could be avoided by means other than killing one’s enemies. While war remains as an option for deterrence, peaceful negotiations should be explored to the maximum. This is why Rabbi Aryeth Azriel, the Senior Rabbi at Temple Israel of Omaha Nebraska whole-heartedly endorses him for Defense Secretary. For the reasons cited above in his DEFENSE, the Republican Senators should vote AYE to confirm Chuck Hagel as DEFENSE Secretary.

IMMIGRATION 911 by Atty. Susan V. Perez Adjustment of Status is the last and final step in the process of obtaining a legal permanent resident status in the United States. This part of the process belongs exclusively to you and your accompanying dependents such as your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21. To change your status from that of a nonimmigrant to that of an immigrant, you must first determine whether or not you are eligible to file for Adjustment of Status. The mere approval of the I-140 does not give you eligibility to file for Adjustment of Status. There are only a certain number of green cards available per country per year. They are given on a first come first-served basis. Your place in line is reserved by your “priority date,” the date on which your permanent residency application was initiated with the government, either by the filing of a labor certification application with the Department of Labor or by the filing of a Form I-140 with the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If your priority date is “current” you may file your adjustment application. If your priority date is not current or unavailable, then you must wait until your priority date becomes current. The Department of State determines which priority dates are current and therefore acceptable for filing. These dates are published once a month in their Visa Bulletin which is available on line at: http://travel. There are several charts in the Visa Bulletin, the first chart is the Family-based and the second chart is the Employment-based immigrant visas. You must be looking at the chart for Employment-based and that you are looking at the appropriate preference classification for your case. For example, caregivers (Continued from page 6) belong to “Other Workers” Preference and their priority date is “U”. welcome to sit in. Understanding Adjustment of Status for Employment-based Immigrant Visas

status, you are encouraged to seek legal guidance form a good immigration attorney. There are important considerations that you need to factor into your decisions to file for adjustment of status. It’s more complicated than you think. I’ve encountered clients who filed for adjustment of status without the assistance of an immigration attorney and they got rejected. They ended up losing more money and time. Your attorney will determine which forms you must file and whether you must file them at all. If you have been arrested, it may be wise not to file for adjustment of status. If you were a J-1 visa holder and have an unfulfilled two-year home residency requirement, your application for adjustment of status will be denied. The following are some of frequently asked questions by clients who are in the process of adjusting based on employment-based petitions: Does an alien have to be in the United States when an advance parole is filed? Ans. The applicant must have been granted advance parole, unless present in the United Stats on an H-1B or L visa before leaving the United States. When should an Employment Authorization Document (EAD) extension be filed? Ans. USCIS allows filing up to four months in advance of expiration. What happens if an adjustment applicant works without an EAD and without valid nonimmigrant status after the filing of the adjustment application? Ans. It could bar adjustment or be a ground for denial of the adjustment application. USCIS will accumulate any unauthorized employment prior to the filing of the adjustment and unauthorized employment after the filing of the adjustment, and, if the total exceeds 180 days since the last entry, the applicant will be considered ineligible to adjust and not protected by law. We welcome your feedback. If you have any immigration questions, please feel welcome to email me at or call 619 819 -8648 to arrange for a telephone consultation. community with varying social, political, and economic backgrounds," said AALDEF Executive Director Margaret Fung. "The AALDEF Exit Poll provides much needed data on Asian American voting trends, especially as our community's political influence continues to grow." Glenn Magpantay, AALDEF Democracy Program Director, explained that the survey covered Asian American voters in 37 cities across 14 states on Election Day – New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Maryland, Michigan, Illinois, Georgia, Louisiana, Florida, Texas, Nevada, California, and Washington D.C. The largest Asian ethnic groups in the exit poll were Chinese (31%), Asian Indian (13%), Bangladeshi (12%), Vietnamese (12%), Korean (11%), Filipino (9%), Pakistani (3%), Arab (2%), Indo-Caribbean (1%), and Cambodian (1%). Among their findings: Location appears to matter. President Obama won big in the northeastern states (e.g. 89 percent in Pennsylvania and 86 percent in New York and Michigan ) and fared more poorly in the South (e.g. 57 percent in Texas and 16 percent in Louisiana ). The generational divide that marked the President’s 2008 victory appeared to continue in 2012. Only 10 percent of Asian-Americans under 30 voted for Romney (he best performed in the 60-69 age bracket at 27 percent). Asian-Americans under 40 broke heavily for the President. The large number of 1st time voters appear to reinforce the notion Asian Americans are a growing segment of the electorate. About 79 percent of Asian-Americans polled were foreign born. More than 27 percent of those polled said they voted for the 1st time last year.

Don’t be impressed. Next thing, he may tell you that you “make” him feel bad, or that you make him feel violent, or that you “provoke” him. “Look what you made me do!” is an abuser’s ubiquitous catchphrase. Does he find sadistic sex exciting? Does he have fantasies of rape or pedophilia? Is he too forceful with you in and out of the sexual intercourse? Does he like hurting you physically or finds it amusing? Does he abuse you verbally – does he curse you, demeans you, calls you ugly or inappropriately diminutive names, or persistently criticizes you? Does he beat or slap you or otherwise mistreats you physically? Does he then switch to being saccharine and “loving”, apologizes profusely and buys you gifts? If you have answered “yes” to any of the above – stay away! He is an abuser. Body Language of the Abuser Then there is the abuser’s body language. It comprises an unequivocal series of subtle – but discernible – warning signs. Pay attention to the way your date comports himself – and save yourself a lot of trouble! Many abusers have a specific body language. It comprises an unequivocal series of subtle – but discernible – warning signs. Pay attention to the way your date comports himself – and save yourself a lot of trouble! Abusers are an elusive breed, hard to spot, harder to pinpoint, impossible to capture. Even an experienced mental health diagnostician with unmitigated access to the record and to the person examined would find it fiendishly difficult to determine with any degree of certainty whether someone is being abusive because he suffers from an impairment, i.e., a mental health disorder. Some abusive behavior patterns are a result of the patient’s cultural-social context. The offender seeks to conform to cultural and social morals and norms. Additionally, some people become abusive in reaction to severe life crises. Still, most abusers master the art of deception. People often find themselves involved with a abuser (emotionally, in business, or otherwise) before they have a chance to discover his real nature. When the abuser reveals his true colors, it is usually far too late. His victims are unable to separate from him. They are frustrated by this acquired helplessness and angry that they failed to see through the abuser earlier on. But abusers do emit subtle, almost subliminal, signals in his body language

an instrument of gratification (materializes on your doorstep unexpectedly or calls you often prior to your date)? Does he go through your personal belongings while waiting for you to get ready? Does he text or phone you multiply and incessantly and insist to know where you are or where you have been at all times? Does he control the situation and you compulsively? Does he insist to ride in his car, holds on to the car keys, the money, the theater tickets, and even your bag? Does he disapprove if you are away for too long (for instance when you go to the powder room)? Does he interrogate you when you return (“have you seen anyone interesting”) – or make lewd “jokes” and remarks? Does he hint that, in future, you would need his permission to do things – even as innocuous as meeting a friend or visiting with your family? Does he insist on a “dress code”? Does he act in a patronizing and condescending manner and criticizes you often? Does he emphasize your minutest faults (devalues you) even as he exaggerates your talents, traits, and skills (idealizes you)? Does he call you names, harasses, or ridicules you? Is he wildly unrealistic in his expectations from you, from himself, from the budding relationship, and from life in general?

even in a first or casual encounter. These are: “Haughty” body language – The abuser adopts a physical posture which implies and exudes an air of superiority, seniority, hidden powers, mysteriousness, amused indifference, etc. Though the abuser usually maintains sustained and piercing eye contact, he often refrains from physical proximity (he maintains his personal territory). The abuser takes part in social interactions – even mere banter – condescendingly, from a position of supremacy and faux “magnanimity and largesse”. But even when he feigns gregariousness, he rarely mingles socially and prefers to remain the “observer”, or the “lone wolf”. Entitlement markers – The abuser immediately asks for “special treatment” of some kind. Not to wait his turn, to have a longer or a shorter therapeutic session, to talk directly to authority figures (and not to their assistants or secretaries), to be granted special payment terms, to enjoy custom tailored arrangements. This tallies well with the abuser’s alloplastic defenses - his tendency to shift responsibility to others, or to the world at large, for his needs, failures, behavior, choices, and mishaps (“look what you made me do!”). The abuser is the one who – vocally and demonstratively – demands the undivided attention of the head waiter in a restaurant, or monopolizes the hostess, or latches on to celebrities in a party. The abuser reacts with rage and indignantly when denied his wishes and if treated the same as others whom he deems inferior. Abusers frequently and embarrassingly “dress down” service providers such as waiters or cab drivers. Idealization or devaluation – The abuser instantly idealizes or devalues his interlocutor. He flatters, adores, admires and applauds the “target” in an embarrassingly exaggerated and profuse manner – or sulks, abuses, and humiliates her. Abusers are polite only in the presence of a potential would-be victim – a “mate”, or a “collaborator”. But they are unable to sustain even perfunctory civility and fast deteriorate to barbs and thinly-veiled hostility, to verbal or other violent displays of abuse, rage attacks, or cold detachment. The “membership” posture – The abuser always tries to “belong”. Yet, at the very same time, he maintains his stance as an outsider. The abuser seeks to be admired for his ability to integrate (Continued on page 14)

Ratepayer and Public Interest Advocates Propose Formal Review of Cost to Replace San Onofre Steam Generators
owner and operator of San Onofre to replace four steam generators and conduct a reasonableness review of the entire cost to replace those steam generators. Ruth Henricks and the Coalition to Decommission San Onofre filed this motion with the CPUC on Friday, February 1, 2013. Ruth Henricks is represented by Michael Aguirre. The Coalition to Decommission San Onofre is comprised of communitybased, grassroots organizations in San Diego and Orange Counties concerned for the safety of 8.5 million residents living within 50 miles of the crippled San Onofre Nuclear Power Plant, and for the economy of Southern California. In December 2005, the CPUC authorized majority owner and operator, Southern California to undertake its proposed San Onofre Generator Replacement Program (SGRP) to replace the four (4) existing steam generators at Units 2 and 3 with four (4) new steam generators (Decision 05-12-040). The CPUC retained jurisdiction to conduct a reasonableness review if the SGRP costs were unreasonable or if they exceeded $680 million (later revised to $671 million): “If the SGRP cost exceeds $680 million, or the Commission later finds that it has reason to believe the costs may be unreasonable regardless of the amount, the entire SGRP cost shall be subject to a reasonableness review.” On November 1, 2012, the CPUC issued an Order Instituting Investigation, nine months after the failure of all 4 replacement steam generators at San Onfore with less than two years in service. Therein, the CPUC noted that in this Investigation: “There is also the potential for review of some or all of the $671 million authorized for the steam generator replacement program (SGRP). In particular, up to $671 million with the intention not to conduct an after-the-fact reasonableness review if the costs did not exceed $671 million. However, we also ordered: ‘If the SGRP cost exceeds [$671 million], or the Commission later finds that it has reason to believe the costs may be unreasonable regardless of the amount, the entire SRGP cost may be subject to reasonableness review.” (D.05-12-040, Ordering Paragraph 5.)’” As a result of the failure of these steam generators one year ago, we now know that Edison’s radical redesign of the steam generators caused structural failures in less than two years – an industry record. SCE falsely told the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) and CPUC that the replacement generators were “like for like,” avoiding a “License Amendment Review” which might have caught problems such as an error-filled computer simulation. Friends of the Earth are suing NRC to force a License Amendment Review for any restart. Edison plans to restart the slightly less damaged Unit 2 as soon as NRC gives the goahead (expected in April/May), run it at 70% power for 5 months and then shut it down for inspections. Local residents warn that SCE’s plan puts California’s economy at risk, along with more than 8 million people who live within 50 miles of SONGS. That’s the distance from Fukushima Daiichi that the NRC recommended for Americans to evacuate. SCE’s testimony on pos-

What You Need to Know about the 2013 Tax Season
When it comes to tax season, every year is a little different. Laws change, some benefits kick in while others end, and natural disasters can have an impact on your tax return. The deadline for filing your taxes is April 15, 2013. While this is the normal deadline, there are some important new things you should know for the 2013 tax season. Tax Season Started Late This Year The 2013 tax season started about a week later this year due to tax law changes enacted by Congress at the beginning of January. Most people can file their individual income tax returns starting January 30, but you might have to wait until the end of February or March if you’re filing certain forms, including: Form 5695 (Residential Energy Credits - PDF) Form 4562 (Depreciation and Amortization - PDF) Form 3800 (General Business Credit - PDF) The IRS has a complete list of forms it will begin accepting in late February or March. Tax Relief for Disaster Survivors The IRS offers tax relief programs to individuals and businesses affected by disasters such as flooding, earthquakes, wildfires, and hurricanes, including last year’s Hurricane Sandy. Tax relief can include some of the following help: Additional time to file your taxes Additional time to pay your taxes Quick tax returns for losses related to disasters New Process to Apply for an Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN) Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers are issued to people who want to file their taxes but do not have a Social Security Number. Starting January 1, 2013, important changes were made to the application process, including the following: The IRS will only accept original identification documents such as passports and birth certificates or certified copies from the agency that issued them Notarized copies of documents will not be accepted New Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) will be valid for a period of five years The IRS offers more information about Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs) on its website, including how to apply for one and where to get help. Scams and Fraud While tax seasons can vary slightly each year, there’s one thing that rarely changes: scammers are always trying to steal your personal information. Identity theft is one of the most common types of fraud. It often starts when a scammer sends out an e-mail pretending to be the IRS and asks for your personal information. It’s called phishing and may also occur through other types of electronic communication such as text messages, so be careful. The IRS does not initiate communications via e-mails and provides these tips to help you protect your personal information. The IRS also explains what you should do if you receive a message supposedly from the IRS on its website. February 1, 2013

Author’s note: August 21, 1983. Exiled Senator Benigno “Ninoy” Aquino, the charismatic opposition leader, arrives at the Manila International Airport to a returning hero’s welcome. Escorted by government soldiers, Ninoy is summarily shot to death as he steps on the tarmac… Kumander Gusi watches the TV coverage of the assassination while recovering from wounds sustained during an encounter with commandos of the Philippine Constabulary. Years earlier, Gusi was the newly-ordained and affable Father George Madrid whose social justice work among oppressed farm workers (sacadas) to Gusi. Someone might spot him and tip off the local police or PC. They drove the rest of the way in silence. The driver dropped him off at the entrance of the hospital and said he was going to wait in the parking lot. Gusi nodded, but he did not plan to have the driver bring him back to the pier. It was too risky.

Chapter 29. Perpetual Help Hospital

The youngest member of the black duiker family, Rashidi, is fitting right in at the San Diego Zoo. Rashidi, whose name means "rightly guided" in Afrikaans, is 7 weeks old and weighs 17 pounds. The baby duiker is the second offspring for parents Robin and Luke, whose first offspring, Kodi, now lives at the San Diego Zoo Safari Park and was the first duiker to be born at the San Diego Zoo. Keepers report that Rashidi is well bonded with his parents, nursing from his mother for the first few weeks but now moved on to solid foods. The young duiker's diet primarily consists of fresh fallen leaves, alfalfa hay and diced squash and yams. Rashidi particularly enjoys acacia leaves, which keepers often put out for him around his exhibit. "This youngster was born in the middle of December and weighed about 5 pounds," senior keeper John Michel

said. "As of last week, at about 7 weeks of age, he is 17 pounds, so he's quadrupled his birth weight in two months,"

Michel said. Rashidi and his parents share their home with two okapis, a much-larger

species closely related to giraffes, which they get along very well with. Rashidi can be seen spending time near his okapi exhibit mates, exploring his exhibit, chasing after his parents and nibbling on acacia leaves. Black duikers are native to the continent of Africa and weigh between 25 to 55 pounds at maturity. Duikers get their name from the Afrikaans word duikerbok, which means "diving buck," because when frightened they tend to dive into bushes to hide. The species is near threatened in the wild, mainly due to natural predators and agricultural burn off, making this birth at the San Diego Zoo significant for the genetics of the species. The San Diego Zoo Global Wildlife Conservancy is dedicated to bringing endangered species back from the brink of extinction. The Conservancy makes possible the wildlife conservation efforts(representing both plants and animals) of the San Diego Zoo, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, San Diego Zoo Institute for Conservation Research, and international field programs in more than 35 countries. The important conservation and science work of these entities is supported in part by The Foundation of the Zoological Society of San Diego.

Gusi checked out the driver, a young man in his late twenties, wiry with long black hair. Often, the military utilized drivers as sources of information. For the right price or the right torture instrument, they could spill the beans, provide the location of meeting places, safe houses, rendezvous spots, etc. “How long have you been working for my sister?” he asked innocently, watching for the slightest reaction. “Six months pa lang, sir.” he replied politely. “Are you from Cebu?“ he asked. “Cagayan de Oro, sir.“ he replied. Gusi was not sure if her sister vetted her staff thoroughly. Probably not. The guy looked okay, but Gusi felt unsettled.

“Is that you, George?” Mrs. Madrid smiled, faintly. George approached the bed and gave his beloved mother a kiss, on the forehead. “It’s nice of you to come, George.” “Ma, I heard your kidneys are not working so well.” “That’s what the doctors say. But, I’m alright.” Her voice got weaker.

His sister, Charito, asked if he could stay for the day. Oh, it would be so nice to have dinner at home with the family. She could ask everyone to come. It’s been so long. I have to go.” He held his mother’s hand for a minute, gave his sister a hug, then quickly left. Not ten minutes later, three armed men entered the hospital lobby and asked for directions to the ICU. But by then, Gusi was aboard a yellow cab. He instructed the driver to take him to the airport. He would take a plane to Manila and take a circuitous route back home. He would get the dried mangoes for Dr. Delima at the airport shop. The rebel commander finished praying five decades of the rosary and a few of his morning prayers before the taxi driver dropped him off at the domestic terminal. #### To be continued... Lower Your Nets Gutierrez by Msgr. Fernando G.

Joke of the week: The preacher spent his whole sermon relating the evils of sin and how all men are sinners with no exceptions. At the end of the sermon he asked rhetorically, “Now does anyone here think they are without sin?” He had only to wait a few seconds before a man in one of the back pews stood up. The pastor asked the man who had the audacity to stand after such a fiery sermon, “Sir, do you really think you are completely without sin?” The man quickly answered, “No sir, I’m not standing up for myself, but for my wife’s first husband.” Scriptures: First Reading: Isaiah 6: 1-2a; 3-8. With the earthly temple of Jerusalem serving as the background for his experience of God’s power and presence, Isaiah narrates his divine vision and his call. In contrast with God’s holiness, the prophet felt unworthy and refuses the call to be a prophet. However, forgiven and strengthened by grace, the prophet accepts and responds generously to the call. Second Reading: 1 Corinthians 15: 1-11. Through personal revelation and testimony of the Apostles, Paul received the Good News. After his

conversion, thinking that he is still unfit for the task of proclaiming the Good News, Paul refused to be called a “disciple.” Yet with God’s grace, he became a powerful servant of the Gospel among the Gentiles. Gospel: Luke 5: 1-11. Having worked all night and had caught nothing, at the words of Jesus, who is not a fisherman, Peter lowered his nets. To Peter’s great surprise, their nets were almost tearing due to a great catch of fish. Overcome with awe and wonder and feeling unworthy and sinful at the presence of Jesus, Peter asks him to excuse himself from his company. Jesus did not condemn Peter who humbly recognizes his unworthiness to be with him. Jesus instead forgives and transforms Peter to be fit for the Lord’s call. Reflection: In today’s readings we see how in different and various ways God calls and changes us. In the first reading Isaiah heard God’s call through his vision of heavenly elements, such as shaking doorposts, seraphim and smoke. The second reading narrates Paul’s call through the witnesses of Jesus’ followers.

The Gospel tells of the great catch of fish as the occasion for Peter’s experience of God’s call. Though the emphasis of the three events rests not on the human experience primarily, but on God’s gracious call, yet it is very noticeable that the common thread that runs through the three stories is the unworthiness of those called. Isaiah realizes that he is “a man of unclean lips,” Paul feels that he is not fit to be called an apostle, Peter admits that he is “a sinful man.” By God’s grace the three men were cleansed and transformed to be worthy of their vocation. The call does not depend on the one called, but on the grace of God. God doesn’t call the qualified people, but qualifies those he calls. “When Christ at a symbolic moment was establishing His great society, He chose for its cornerstone neither the brilliant Paul nor the mystic John, but a shuffler, a snob, a coward - in a word, a man. And upon this rock He has built His Church, and the gates of Hell have not prevailed against it. All the empires and the kingdoms have failed, because of this inherent and continual weakness, that they were founded by strong men and upon strong men. But this one thing, the historic Christian Church, was founded on a weak man, and for that reason it is indestructible. For no chain is stronger than its weakest link.” (G. K. Chesterton, Heretics, 1905, pp. 60-1.) Our pop culture attributes success and greatness to extraordinary qualities of a person. A young person who is great with numbers is fit to be successful in computers, science or architecture. Someone who is prolific with words, convincing in debates and persuasive in reasoning is an excellent candidate for politics or the practice of law. The emphasis here is more on the positive, not on the negative elements. To consider one’s response to the Lord’s call to

serve him and love one’s neighbors on the basis of a person’s positive qualities alone is to deny and limit the power of God’s grace to change and transform a person, and to interpret salvation from the standpoint of human perspective alone. The response of Isaiah, Paul, and Peter to the call illustrates that God looks into the heart of every person and searches in there a humble recognition of one’s unworthiness. The rest is up to God. To consider that only men of unblemished character could carry the Gospel is not only to negate God’s primary role in a person’s conversion, but also to deny that humanity is sinful and weak. To believe that those called to serve the Lord are all saints is to close one’s eyes to the truth that Jesus Christ became wounded and weak when he assumed our sinful humanity. Because Christ became susceptible to weakness and death, in the end he conquered them. It is on this truth that St. Paul could say, “When I am weak, then I am strong,” because the power of God rests on him. Isaiah, Paul, and Peter’s unworthiness was the occasion for God’s grace to reveal itself and to transform the three men. Who we are and what qualities we possess matter a little, the important thing that counts most is our humble admission that we are not fit to serve the Lord and he would help us to be transformed. On the other hand, one who proudly thinks that he is very well fit to serve the Lord serves only oneself. Only the lowly is fit to serve the Lord who also humbled himself by becoming man. One goes up the ladder by looking down on the steps. Quotation of the week: “God chooses those who are pleasing to him. He put a shepherd at the head of his people and of the goat-herd, Amos, he made a prophet.” St. Basil.

I agree with Fred Barcelona of the Bacolod Filipino-Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry, who noted that Bacoleños appreciate Chinese culture and how the Chinatown Center can symbolize the best of Filipino and Chinese cultures. Among them should be the Chinese entrepreneurial spirit and the ethics of hard work. Another is the spirit of community or “dagyaw” Ongs have as much at stake in the Philippines as those with family names such as the Locsins, Lacsons, Cojuangcos, Tingsons, Tiongsons, full Chinese names which were Hispanized and adopted as family names. In fact, I don’t even want to call some of our kasimanwas as Tsinoys. Filipinos will do. Otherwise, we should call our national hero a Tsinoy. We can trace the genealogical records of our national hero José Protacio Rizal Mercado y Alonso Realonda to South China. It was in Siongque, the rural “barrio” in Fujian province where was born and educated. Lamco was the 19th generation of the first Cua (or “Tsai” in Mandarin or “Choy” in Cantonese) who settled in Siongque. To free his heirs from the Spanish regime’s anti-Chinese racist policies, Chinese immigrant Lamco changed his clan’s family name to “Mercado” (meaning “market” in Spanish) so that his heirs would not forget their Chinese mercantile roots. I’m happy to note that Bacoladiat is thus a smashing success. I would enjoy if Chinatown can have the same ambience I’ve seen in New York. There, I feel transported back to Hong Kong. Yet Chinatown

Chinese New Year Festival
Wikipedia -- The Chinese New Year is the most important of the traditional Chinese holidays. In China, it is also known as the ‘Spring Festival’, the literal translation of the modern Chinese name (see Names in Chinese below). Chinese New Year celebrations traditionally ran from Chinese New Year’s Day itself, the first day of the first month of the Chinese calendar, to the Lantern

“Tsinoy” derived from two words: “Tsino” (meaning “Chinese”) and “Pinoy” (the slang word for “Filipino”) is a person of Chinese ancestry but raised in the Philippines. Chinese mestizos are those in the Philippines of mixed Chinese and either Filipino or Spanish (or both) ancestry. They make up about 11.5% of the country’s total population (those who are pure Chinese make up 2% of the population). A number of Chinese mestizos have surnames that reflect their heritage, mostly two or three syllables that have Chinese roots (e.g., the full name of a Chinese ancestor) with a Spanish phonetic spelling. The Chinese mestizos may also be known as Tsinoys (alternatively spelled as “Chinoy”), although this term may also refer to the full-blooded Chinese Filipinos; and/or Chinito, a term that largely denotes physical characteristics (referring to slanted eyes) rather than ethnic/cultural. -- Wikipedia
Festival on the 15th day of the first month. The evening preceding Chinese New Year’s Day is an occasion for Chinese families to gather for the annual reunion dinner. Because the Chinese calendar is lunisolar, the Chinese New Year is often referred to as the “Lunar New Year”. Chinese New Year is the longest and most important festival in the Chinese calendar. The origin of Chinese New Year is itself centuries old and gains significance because of several myths and traditions. Chinese New Year is celebrated in China and in countries and territories with significant Chinese populations, including Hong Kong,[2] Macau, Singapore,[3] Thailand, Indonesia, Malaysia, Taiwan, Mauritius,[4] Philippines,[5][6] and also in Chinatowns elsewhere. Chinese New Year is considered a major holiday for the Chinese and has had influence on the lunar new year celebrations of its geographic neighbors. Within China, regional customs and traditions concerning the celebration of the Chinese new year vary widely. People will pour out their money to buy presents, decoration,

want to emphasize. A Filipino need not sport a family name such as a Tan, Chua, Sy or Uy to have Chinese blood. Not even a Spanish or English name or the Hispanization of Chinese names can deny the Chinese blood that runs through many a Filipino vein. One time I heard a friend who called “kamo nga mga Intsik” while referring to members of the Bacolod Chinese Amity. By Darla Gogin The festival of Carnaval is celebrated in San Felipe, Baja every year as it is in most cities in Latin American countries. The peaceful and quiet coastal fishing village of San Felipe will show its wide side with the celebration of Carnival this year starting on before the Catholic tradition of Ash Wednesday, February 13th. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent which is 46 days before the celebration of Easter. So how and why did this celebration begin? Hundreds of years ago, the followers of the Catholic religion in Italy, during the medieval time period, started the tradition

The festival consisted in a parade of masks following an adorned wooden boat; that would reflect the floats of modern carnivals. Because Catholics are not supposed to eat meat during Lent, they called their festival, carnevale — which means “to put away the meat.” As time passed, carnivals in Italy became quite famous; and in fact the practice spread to France, Spain, and all the Catholic countries in Europe. Then as the French, Spanish, and Portuguese began to take control of the Americas and other

parts of the world, they brought with them their tradition of celebrating carnival. So, Carnaval came to South America from Europe as celebrations before the beginning of the forty day Lenten season of fasting and prayer. I have enjoyed this holiday for the past 11 years as I have traveled every year to San Felipe for the Festival of Carnival. As I was thinking about the celebrations this year, I began my wonder about the origins of this popular festival. Carnival, to my surprise, is celebrated in over 50 countries worldwide as an annual celebration of life. Many people are aware of the two most infamous of these Festivals. Rio De Janeiro in Brazil and Mardi Gras in New Orleans, USA. By the way Mardi Gras is French for Fat Tuesday. Fat Tuesday this year is February 12th and it is the Tuesday of holding a wild costume festival right before the first day of Lent. The Lenten period of the Liturgical year Church calendar, being the six weeks directly before Easter, was marked by fasting and repenting of ones shortcomings. Traditionally during Lent, no parthe whole community, is thought to be the origin of Carnival. The origin of the name “carnival” is disputed. Variants in Italian dialects suggest that the name comes from the Italian carne levare or similar, meaning “to remove meat”, since meat is prohibited during Lent. A different explanation states that the word comes from the Late Latin expression carne vale, which means “farewell to meat”, signifying that those were the last days when one could eat meat before the fasting of Lent. Yet another translation depicts carne vale as “a farewell to the flesh”, a phrase embraced by certain carnival celebrations that encourage letting go of your former (or everyday) self and embracing the carefree nature of the festival. Another possible explanation comes from the term “Carrus Navalis” (ship cart), the name of the roman festival of Isis, where her image was carried to the sea-shore to bless the start of the sailing season.

Miracles, Magic, and MindBoggling Technologies at Sin City III (Product Reviews)
Returning from the International CES 2013 Conference in Las Vegas, I brought with me samples of some of the amazing products that were displayed. Of course, the Press Relations (PR) representatives of the exhibitors provided the samples with the understanding that I would review them. Product Reviews i’m WATCH This device earned me a new name when I demonstrated it to my barber. He called me, “JAMES BEN, Agent alarm clock. It lets you display the clock in analog or digital format. It synchronizes time automatically and checks the weather in your favorite cities. It also receives calls showing the caller’s name and number; makes calls by dialing the number or by calling from the contacts list. i’m Droid 2 is the customized Android Operating System created by the i’m Watch team. It supposedly makes the device the world’s most advanced smartwatch containing many revolutionary features. Among them are: 1. Smart tethering – the device intelligently uses tethering connection to your smartphone; 2. i’m Cloud – this innovative system allows you to manage your smartwatch apps and data via the Internet. With the I’m Cloud Mobile, no need to go through PC or Mac, you just need your smartphone; 3. Compass - sets you on the right direction whenever you need it because it has an integrated magnetometer; 4. Accelerometer – it tells you all about how you are moving; 5. External sensors – due to Bluetooth you can connect to external sensors and control their functions. From the device, you can directly access pedometers, heart-rate monitors, and dozens of other sensors; 6. Speakerphone – it has a sophisticated audio system where you can speak freely and clearly even at the wheel;

7. SMS – the device informs you as soon as you receive an SMS in your smartphone. You can also read it directly from your wrist; 8. Email – You can read e-mails which are clearly on display; 9. Appointments – a complete management system for events and appointments; 10. Facebook – All your friends’ posts are displayed clearly and in real time; 11. Twitter – access the full list of your tweets and, with a quick touch, read your favorites; and 12. Instagram – see the snapshots of your friends registered on the photosharing social network; Outside of these features that are immediately available and accessible, there are three others related to i’m Watch technology that expands its capabilities limitlessly: i’m market, i’m music, and i’m Developer. i’m market is a treasure trove of apps ready to be downloaded and installed. i’m music gives you unlimited access to millions of songs on demand and customized playlists. i’m Developer allows developers to tap into the wealth of available resources to develop any type of App. It is indeed an amazing device. I am still in the process of exploring all its features and capabilities but I am very happy using it to date. Being named “JAMES BEN” even in this Digital Age gives me some semblance of invincibility. ur WATCH! BRINNO The top executives of Brinno were at the CES booth when I went to visit. They were ready to show me their amazing products. They made sure that some samples contained in a nice tote bag were given to me before I left. The three products supplied to me were a Time Lapse Camera (TLC 200), a Peep Hole Viewer, and a Motion-Activated Sensor. I still have to install and test the last two, which go together. But I have used, re-used and fully-tested the camera.

TIME LAPSE CAMERA Cameras have been indispensable companions for many of us as we go on with our daily lives. From experiencing the analog way of recording images to the digitalization of both still and motion/video pictures, they were useful tools in recording, storing and retrieving vivid images that depicted our social lives or of those events that we wish

to remember and probably retrieve as great memories. Desktops, laptops, notebooks, ultra books, tablets/MacBook, and smartphones/iPhones – all have cameras capable of taking still photos and videos. They show that amidst the special features operated in these digital devices, the camera still plays a significant role. Time Lapse Camera is unique in its simplicity, portability, userfriendliness, and usability in all weather conditions. It is a small camera measured at a mere 2.5 by 1.8 by 4.2 inches and 9 ounces. It makes time lapse photography as simple as your point and shoot. It is as easy as finding your target, framing it, setting the time interval, waiting, and then uploading the video onto your computer. You can very easily determine how often you wish to take a shot. Cycle quickly through intervals of one, two, three, five, 10, 20, 30 seconds, or one, five, 10 minutes, or one hour on the menu. It has an adjustable and rotatable lens and fairly wide-angle view. It can only be limited by the life of its four AA batteries and the size of its SDHC memory card, which supports as many as 32 GB. I
“weakness” and “sentimentality”. They distance themselves from their own emotions and from their loved ones by alienating and hurting them. Seriousness and sense of intrusion and coercion – The abuser is dead serious about himself. He may possess a fabulous sense of humor, scathing and cynical, but rarely is he self-deprecating. The abuser regards himself as being on a constant mission, whose importance is cosmic and whose consequences are global. If a scientist – he is always in the throes of revolutionizing science. If a journalist – he is in the middle of the greatest story ever. If an aspiring businessman - he is on the way to concluding the deal of the century. Woe betide those who doubt his grandiose fantasies and impossible schemes. This self-misperception is not amenable to light-headedness or selfeffacement. The abuser is easily hurt and insulted (narcissistic injury). Even the most innocuous remarks or acts are interpreted by him as belittling, intruding, or coercive slights and demands. His time is more valuable than others’ – therefore, it cannot be wasted on unimportant matters such as social intercourse, family obligations, or household chores. Inevitably, he feels constantly misunderstood. Any suggested help, advice, or concerned inquiry are immediately cast by the abuser as intentional humiliation, implying that the abuser is in need of help and counsel and, thus, imperfect. Any attempt to set an agenda is, to the abuser, an intimidating act of enslavement. In this sense, the abuser is both schizoid and paranoid and often entertains ideas of reference. Finally, abusers are sometimes sadistic and have inappropriate affect. In other words, they find the obnoxious, the heinous, and the shocking – funny or even gratifying. They are sexually sado-masochistic or deviant. They like to taunt, to torment, and to hurt people’s feelings (“humorously” or with bruising “honesty”). While some abusers are “stable” and “conventional” – others are antisocial and their impulse control is flawed. These are very reckless (self-destructive and self-defeating) and just plain destructive: workaholism, alcoholism, drug abuse, pathological gambling, compulsory shopping, or reckless driving. Yet, these – the lack of empathy, the aloofness, the disdain, the sense of entitlement, the restricted application of humor, the unequal treatment, the sadism, and the paranoia – do not render the abuser a social misfit. This is because the abuser mistreats only his closest – spouse, children, or (much more rarely) colleagues, friends, neighbours. To the rest of the world, he appears to be a composed, rational, and functioning person. Abusers are very adept at casting a veil of secrecy – often with the active aid of their victims – over their dysfunction and misbehavior. understand that “four AA batteries can capture 300,000 frames! That basically breaks down to one second interval will last around 3.4 days, five second intervals about 17 days, and so forth.” That capability should be more than enough to handle any video project that one pursues. As I have said, I have used it and I love it. I plan to buy a couple of accessories that would make it even more useful – the Brinno ATH100 Weather Resistant Housing, and the Brinno Shutter Line. The first one is a casing that would make my camera weatherproof, which means that it could be used outdoors whether it’s raining or snowing. The second one is basically a trigger for the shutter, which turns it into a stop motion camera! This is super fun for creating your own little films and makes it as easy as a press of a button. Having a 3-foot chord allows you to operate the camera without being close to it. Next week I will deal with the latest on Tablets/iPAD and Smartphones/iPhones.

How to Spot an Abuser on the First Date
(Continued from page 8) and ingratiate himself without investing the efforts commensurate with such an undertaking. For instance: if the abuser talks to a psychologist, the abuser first states emphatically that he never studied psychology. He then proceeds to make seemingly effortless use of obscure professional terms, thus demonstrating that he mastered the discipline all the same – which is supposed to prove that he is exceptionally intelligent or introspective. Show Off Instead of Substance In general, the abuser always prefers show-off to substance. One of the most effective methods of exposing a abuser

is by trying to delve deeper. The abuser is shallow, a pond pretending to be an ocean. He likes to think of himself as a Renaissance man, a Jack of all trades, or a genius. Abusers never admit to ignorance or to failure in any field – yet, typically, they are ignorant and losers. It is surprisingly easy to penetrate the gloss and the veneer of the abuser’s self-proclaimed omniscience, success, wealth, and omnipotence. Bragging and false autobiography – The abuser brags incessantly. His speech is peppered with “I”, “my”, “myself”, and “mine”. He describes himself as intelligent, or rich, or modest, or intuitive, or creative – but always excessively, implausibly, and extraordinarily so. The abuser’s biography sounds unusually rich and complex. His achievements – incommensurate with his age, education, or renown. Yet, his actual condition is evidently and demonstrably incompatible with his claims. Very often, the abuser’s lies or fantasies are easily discernible. He always name-drops and appropriates other people’s experiences and accomplishments as his own. Emotion-free language – The abuser likes to talk about himself and only about himself. He is not interested in others or what they have to say. He is never reciprocal. He acts disdainful, even angry, if he feels an intrusion on his precious time. In general, the abuser is very impatient, easily bored, with strong attention deficits – unless and until he is the topic of discussion. One can dissect all aspects of the intimate life of a abuser, providing the discourse is not “emotionally tinted”. If asked to relate directly to his emotions, the abuser intellectualizes, rationalizes, speaks about himself in the third person and in a detached “scientific” tone or composes a narrative with a fictitious character in it, suspiciously autobiographical. Most abusers get enraged when required to delve deeper into their motives, fears, hopes, wishes, and needs. They use violence to cover up their perceived

Other states in the region are also building and reinforcing their coast guard capabilities, notably Japan. Chinese strategists have traditionally seen non-military maritime vessels as a buffer between navies. Such tack is seen to help avert crises by reducing the presence of naval forces and the likelihood of navy-onnavy accidents and incidents. However, rather than contributing to regional peace and security, the actions of China’s maritime agencies are increasing the likelihood of war in the region, CNAS said. In instances where maritime rights and sovereignty claims are often derived from de facto administration and presence, Beijing is using non-military maritime vessels either to control disputed territories or disrupt the administrative activities of other regional powers creating on-the-ground disputes where none previously existed, it said. CNAS said these dynamics were manifest during the row over Scarborough (Panatag) Shoal in the West Philippine Sea, where China mounted and sustained a substantial maritime law enforcement presence with Navy ships nearby, even as the Philippines withdrew its own government vessels. Since consolidating its occupation of the waters surrounding the reef, China has been in no mood to compromise. Chinese behavior in the East China Sea with respect to disputed islands called Senkaku by Tokyo and Diaoyu by Beijing has followed a similar playbook, CNAS said. These events are troubling in no small part because China is trying to coerce US treaty allies. Yet it is even more worrisome that there is no clear end in sight. China is eagerly capitalizing on opportunities to advance its sovereignty claims, with Chinese officials reportedly describing a “Scarborough model” of coercion and occupation, CNAS added.

Science | Feb. 4, 2013 — Researchers long have evaluated the roles parents play in children's development. Now, researchers at the University of Missouri have found that mothers' directiveness, the extent to which they try to control the content and pace of young children's play, varies based on the children's ages and the mothers' ethnicities. In addition, the study found that the more directive the mothers were during play, the less engaged children were with them and the more negative emotion the children displayed toward their mothers. "Children flourish when they have opportunities to make choices about what they do, particularly in play situations," said Jean Ispa, lead author of the study and professor of human development and family studies at MU. "Mothers who are highly directive do not allow that kind of choice. In our study, the children were playing with some toys, and the very directive mothers were making the decisions about how to play, what to play and how quickly to play." For example, during play with her child, a highly directive mother might make her toddler put the plastic cow in the toy barn through the barn's door instead of through its window. If a child is playing with a pretend kitchen set, the mom might not let the child touch the fake burners on the stove. Mothers often think they are helping their children by correcting them, but they are limiting the children's creativity and possibly making their children enjoy being with them less, Ispa said. "It's often noted that EuropeanAmerican mothers are less directive generally than African-American and Mexican-American mothers, and that's also what we found," Ispa said. "When children were only a year old, on average, African-American mothers were the most directive, MexicanAmerican mothers were second and European-American mothers were third. As children got older, mothers of all ethnicities displayed less directiveness." When mothers were highly direc-

tive during playtime, children expressed less positive regard for their moms and more negative feelings toward them, Ispa said. The researchers also evaluated how affectionate the mothers were to their children and found that higher levels of warmth reduced the negative effects of directiveness. "Even if mothers were very directive, if they were also warm, the negative effects of high directiveness lessened in every one of the ethnic

ing to control me, and I don't like it.'" Ispa and her colleagues used prerecorded videos to analyze pairs of mothers and children interacting in play environments when the children were 1, 2, 3 and 5 years old. The mothers and children in the study all participated in the Early Head Start Research and Evaluation project, a federal study of Early Head Start, a nationwide program designed to help the cognitive, social and emotional development of children from low-

Cranberry Juice Health Benefits
Cranberry juice health benefits are wide and varied, making it an excellent addition to the health-conscious diet. Cranberry juice contains high levels of vitamin C, as well as minerals like manganese, calcium and beta-carotene, which gives it its strong, red color and also acts as a powerful antioxidant. Consuming cranberry juice on a regular basis helps contribute to a healthy diet, but cranberry juice also has other, more specific health benefits. However, be sure to check the ingredients before purchasing a bottle of cranberry juice. Most juices are only about one-third cranberry juice, with the rest consisting of sugars, water and preservatives. The addition of sugar and high fructose corn syrup to cranberry juice greatly reduces its overall health benefits. CRANBERRY JUICE AND URINARY TRACT INFECTIONS One of the more commonly known health benefits of cranberry juice is its ability to ward off urinary tract infections (UTIs). In many cases, if you feel as if a UTI is coming on, drinking cranberry juice can prevent it from fully developing. Most doctors, when diagnosing a UTI, will recommend cranberry juice to help you recover more quickly and more thoroughly. One reason for this is that cranberry juice has a high acidic content. The acid increases the acidic content of the urine, making the urinary tract less hospitable to the bacteria that cause infection. This same high acid content also makes it an effective way to prevent kidney stones. If you experience any symptoms of a UTI or kidney stones, be sure to consult with your physician in addition to consuming additional cranberry juice. CRANBERRY JUICE AND OTHER ILLNESSES OR INFECTIONS Cranberry juice also effectively helps the body fight other types of infection. Substances in cranberry juice have been shown to inhibit the activity of certain types of flu virus, making it more difficult for the virus to adhere to the skin. Cranberry juice’s antioxidant properties also help strengthen the immune system and lower the risk of heart disease and cancer. It also helps the body maintain a proper ratio of HDLs to LDLs, important to ensuring cardiovascular health. Recent studies even indicate that cranberry juice can help

Get to Goal Multicultural Initiative

Track Your Way to Heart Health! The American Heart Association (AHA) Get to Goal Program is a new multicultural initiative that aims to eliminate high blood pressure as a health disparity among minorities such as African-Americans, Latinos, and Asian Americans/Pacific Islanders (APIs) in order to achieve AHA’s goal of improving cardiovascular health by 20%, while reducing cardiovascular mortality by 20% by the year 2020. As of January 2013, the AHA has launched the first phase of the Get to Goal program with a focus in the top 18 markets nationwide selected based on hypertension prevalence and population. Get to Goal is founded on key evidence-based scientific principles which include the practice of selfmonitoring and tracking of blood pressure readings at home or outside of the healthcare provider office setting. Participants of the program will track their blood pressure readings a minimum of every two weeks over a four-month period. It is 100% FREE to sign up and participants will have use of a digital tracking and communication tool developed by the AHA called Heart360. Participants will also be partnered with a health mentor to motivate and encourage participants, with attention paid to multicultural issues that result in hypertension being a health disparity for African-Americans, Latinos, and APIs. Don't miss out on the FREE opportunity to get heart-healthy and manage risk factors such as blood pressure, cholesterol, blood glucose, weight, medications, and physical activity! Using Heart360, you can access free health information, set goals, track your numbers, and even connect directly with your healthcare provider to share your results! Rumor Has It: The Poison of Gossip
by Rebecca Smith, Catholic Exchange, 2/5/2013 -- The habit of gossiping is one that is entirely destructive, and can be likened to an addiction to smoking cigarettes, easy to catch and difficult to get rid of. Both gossiping and smoking provide opportunities to superficially meet and bond with others and also present alternatives to quality conversation. In much the same way as lighting up a quick cigarette fills an awkward silence, telling a rumor also replaces good, wholesome conversation. They also share the obvious similarity of being a habit that is known to be harmful both to ourselves and to others, and yet we often still choose to indulge in it, even though the consequences can be severe and the damage irreversible. One of the main problems with gossiping is how easily it can ruin the reputation of another. Shana Alexander once said, “Trying to squash a rumor is like trying to unring a bell.” Once something is said, you can neither take it back nor guarantee that it will not be repeated. It doesn’t have to be much, just enough to create suspicion–an idle comment implying that someone is a hopeless flirt, or a careless story told of how badly someone acted while drunk, and the damage is done. Although many times we try to justify ourselves doing this by saying that that it is our duty “as a friend” to enlighten someone else, and we are “helping” others by telling them the truth, we sometimes forget that we also owe others compassion and mercy as well. Whether the information is true or not, it is not our job to pass it on. In addition, gossiping tends to go hand in hand with hypocrisy because the act of judging others makes us feel like we are more righteous and less sinful than those we talk about. We find a way to blind ourselves to the fact that we often are committing the same sin as those who we gossip about–we even gossip about others who gossip, pretending that, somehow, it isn’t bad when we do it, only when they do it. It is this same deceptive attitude that allows us as gossipers to pretend that no one ever talks about us, as if we were somehow safe from gossip ourselves (because there is clearly nothing about us deserving of gossip, right?). As a Spanish proverb goes, “Whoever gossips to you will gossip about you.” We of all people should know that is true, and that, again, gossiping doesn’t have to be true to be told and repeated. Gossiping also unfortunately encourages a delight over other people’s sins and failings, conditioning us to view those bad actions as far more “valuable” than good actions. We don’t make it our business to know how virtuous people are being–we only want to know about the evil in their lives, and we want to know all details so that we can fully enjoy it (that is, “sympathize”). It is not right that we should be more excited and pleased to hear of a nasty divorce than a peaceful resolution to a friend’s marriage issues, for instance. There is a spirit of greed in gossiping, a savoring of someone else’s sorrow or pain, which is poison to those involved. Remember, gossip is a vice that inherently involves multiple people: the person who is talked about, the person who is talked to, and the gossiper. After all, what is the point of telling a rumor if there is no one to hear it? It is important to point out that, while smoking is a choice that we have the right to make, we do not have the right to choose to carelessly hurt the reputations of others or invade their privacy. Just like second hand smoke, gossiping also does harm no matter who is exposed to it, regardless of whether they are willing participants or not. And although smoking zones may have be an answer to secondhand smoke issues from cigarettes, there should never be “zones” where gossiping is allowed. In fact, we should strive to make wherever we ourselves are a “no gossip zone” and to do all we can to speak only words of kindness and compassion, so that when they leave us, they do only good.

groups we studied," Ispa said. "If mothers were negative or seemed critical of their kids, then the negative effects of directiveness increased." To benefit their children's development, mothers should show affection to their children while supporting their play and being careful to limit the extent to which they dictate exactly how their children should play, Ispa said. "We know that children, regardless of culture, need to feel loved," said Ispa. "Children take in the meaning of what their mothers are trying to do, so if a mom is being very directive and is generally a very warm person, I think the child feels, 'My mom is doing this because she cares about me, and she's trying to do the best for me.' If that warmth is missing, then the child might feel, 'My mom is try-

Ispa is cochair of the Department of Human Development and Family Studies, which is part of the MU College of Human Environmental Sciences. Ispa's co-authors included Duane Rudy, an associate professor of human development and family studies at MU, and researchers from Arizona State University, the University of California at Los Angeles, the University of Connecticut, the University of Maryland and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro.-

Ikaw Pa Rin
Bulacan 6/7/2012

Poem No. 74
I found peace and solace In the middle ofthe storm The eye of the hurricane I made my home Like a prisoner I dread to venture forth Away from my comfort zone The tempest would be strongest Only this way I can survive And see the chaos of life Parade before my eyes!

In a minute
Smith climbs to the top of Mt. Sinai to get close enough to talk to God. Looking up, he asks the Lord. “God, what does a million years mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A minute.” Smith asks, “And what does a million dollars mean to you?” The Lord replies, “A penny.” Smith asks, “Can I have a penny?” The Lord replies, “In a minute.” *** A man goes to see the Rabbi. ' "Rabbi, something terrible is happening and I have to talk to you about it." The Rabbi asked, "What's wrong?" The man replied, "My wife is poisoning me. The Rabbi, very surprised by this, asks, "How can that be?" The man then pleads, "I'm telling you, I'm certain she's poisoning me,what should I do?" The Rabbi then offers, "Tell you what. Let me talk to her, I'll see what I can find out and I'll let you know." A week later the Rabbi calls the man and says, "I spoke to her on the phone for three hours. You want my advice? The man said, "Yes" and the Rabbi replied, "Take the poison." *** John was on his deathbed and gasped pitifully, “Give me one last request, dear,” he said. “Of course, John,” his wife said softly. “Six months after I die,” he said, “I want you to marry Bob.” “But I thought you hated Bob,” she said.. With his last breath John said, “I do!”

that even looks remotely dishonest to your wife, will damage your marriage. Godly husbands will be honest and up-front with their wives in all areas. They realize that God made her as a helper and in order for a wife to do that, there can be nothing hidden. 7: Faithfulness – Infidelity, even in Christian marriages, is on the rise. Unfaithfulness falls into two categories – physical and emotional. Most often, men think of physical unfaithfulness as a sexual affair. However, this area also encompasses relationships with other women where you are sharing intimate information that should only be shared with your wife. This area would also include visiting strip clubs. A godly husband never shares his body, or mind with a woman other than his wife. The second is emotional unfaithfulness. Many husbands get to a point in marriage where they don’t feel sexually fulfilled and rather than discuss it with their wives, they turn to pornography. Because there is no physical contact, it seems ok. However, Jesus said that if we look at women with lust, we have committed adultery. pornography is rampant, even in Christian marriages and it is tearing them apart. “The souls that say this chaplet will be embraced by My mercy during their lifetime and especially at the hour of their death (754).” -- Words of Jesus in the Diary of St. Faustina

The Hour of Great Mercy
At three o’clock, implore My mercy, especially for sinners; and, if only for a brief moment, immerse yourself in My Passion, particularly in My abandonment at the moment of agony. This is the hour of great mercy. In this hour, I will refuse nothing to the soul that makes a request of Me in virtue of My Passion (Diary, 1320). -- Divine Mercy in My Soul: Diary of Saint Faustina Kowalska You expired, O Jesus, but the source of life gushed forth for souls and an ocean of mercy opened up for the whole world. O Fount of Life, unfathomable Divine Mercy, envelop the whole world and empty Yourself out upon us. O Blood and Water, which gushed forth from the Heart of Jesus as a fount of mercy for us, I trust in You. Amen.

Using the rosary beads, recite one Our Father, one Hail Mary, and one I Believe in God. On the Our Father beads say this prayer, which was given by Our Lord to St. Faustina (1905-1938). Eternal Father, I o er You the Body and Blood, Soul and Divinity of Your dearly beloved Son, Our Lord Jesus Christ, in atonement for our sins and those of the whole world. On the Hail Mary beads say: For the sake of His sorrowful Passion, have mercy on us and on the whole world. In conclusion say three times: Holy God, Holy Mighty One, Holy Immortal One, have mercy on us and on the whole world.

to moderate in the years 2013 to 2014. For this year, gross domestic product (GDP) growth for the Philippines is projected by Goldman Sachs at 5.5 percent. For 2014 Goldman Sachs sees GDP growth at 5.5 percent, 5.6 percent in 2015 and 5.8 percent in 2016. The Philippines posted a GDP growth of 6.6 percent in 2012. This figure is higher than the 5.9-percent economic growth forecasted by Goldman Sachs for the country last year. Research group IBON said the economic growth posted in 2012 is a “jobless growth.” IBON estimates that the number of unemployed Filipinos increased by 48,000 to reach 4.4 million and the number of underemployed by 349,000 to 7.5 million in 2012. “Government’s hype is meant to create an appealing image of the Philippine economy for foreign investors, even if the growth figures are meaningless to the ordinary Filipino,” the group said in a statement.

To receive the best possible results from cranberry juice, you should purchase 100% pure juice. Cranberry juice on its own can be extremely tart, but it can be mixed with water without reducing its overall health benefits. Cranberry juice mixed with other juices to sweeten it also provides an acceptable alternative, but if the juice is sweetened with conventional sweeteners, it will not have the desired effect. Adding cranberry juice to your daily diet can provide a boost to your immune system, improve your overall health and give you a good, energetic start to the day. In addition to eating a balanced diet with added cranberry juice, always be sure to talk to your doctor if you experience any unusual symptoms. -- http://mytechnologyworld9.blogspot. in/2012/12/cranberry-juice-healthbenefits.html?m=1
