Victory in Vicco!
Tiny Appalachian Coal Town Smallest in America with Fairness

(above) Vicco Mayor Johnny Cummings, City Attorney Eric Ashley, Police Chief Tony Vaughn, and City Commissioners are joined by Fairness Campaign Director Chris Hartman, Administrative Coordinator Laura Reece, ACLU-KY Executive Director Michael Aldridge, and Fairness Coalition Eastern Kentucky Organizer Katherine Grigg on January 14 as Vicco passes a local anti-discrimination Fairness ordinance. In January the tiny Appalachian town of Vicco, population 334, named for the Virginia Iron Coal and Coke Company, became the fourth city in Kentucky and smallest in America to approve anti-discrimination Fairness protections for lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender individuals in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Fairness Coalition leaders, who made connections in the community through work in Richmond and Berea, joined the mayor and city commission as they debated the issue in a calm, frank manner, leading to a 3-1 passage of the ordinance. “Vicco is a community that believes all folks should be treated fairly,” shared Vicco City Attorney Eric Ashley. “We believe everyone deserves the opportunity for life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. Fairness is a Kentucky value, a Vicco value, and one of our most American values.” View New York Times and other coverage at Fairness.org.

Several meetings between the management of 4th Street Live! and a coalition of social justice organizations including the ACLU-KY, Connected Voices, Louisville Showing Up for Racial Justice, the Fairness Campaign, and the Louisville Metro Human Relations Commission have resulted in a number of positive initiatives. 4th Street Live! has committed to better communicate its dress code policy by posting it at all entrances when the street is operating as an entertainment venue and on the company website. They are also providing a toll free number to collect customer questions or concerns, and are implementing diversity training for security and management staff.
