91 About ALLAH

Please Note
1. I have had the great privilege, (since Aug 2010), of presenting talks on the weekly Radio Program Culture of Islam [Every Friday 8 to 8.30 pm, Radio Sri Lanka - FM 97.4] 2. Since these are Radio Talks, I refer to, or address the audience as listeners 3. I am well aware that the audience to these talks would consist of people belonging to a variety of faiths. So as to make people of all faiths feel included, I very often use words and names that are common to all religions. 4. For these reasons, I use the name GOD, as well as Abraham, Moses, Jesus etc as well as the names Allah, Ibrahim (Alaihis Salaam), Moosa (Alaihis Salaam), Easa (Alaihis Salaam) etc 5. Muslims by habit usually say Sallallahu Alaihiwasallam, when the name of Prophet Muhammad is mentioned, and Alaihis Salaam' when the name of a Prophet is mentioned. However, in these series of talks I have reduced the use of these prayers & sayings to the bare minimum. 6. Muslims, also by habit, use a number of Arabic prayers or sayings, such as Alhamdulillah, Insha Allah and so on. Again, I have reduced the use of these prayers or sayings to the bare minimum. 7. Sometimes I have to write Arabic words in the English script. I have devised my own way of writing Arabic in English, as follows;

91 About ALLAH
Dear Friends, Assalamu Alaikum, The most central theme in Islam is the belief in One God; and that God is Allah. Now how do we perceive God, or how do we think about God? Many of us think that He is the Noun and we are the verb He is Ar Rahmaan (The Beneficent), Ar Raheem (The Merciful), Al Malik (The King), Al Quddus (The Holy, The Pure), As Salam(The source of peace and security), Al Mumin (the guarantor, the affirming) and so on. That is the noun that is His attributes, that is what He represents, but the do-ers, that is us This belief or attitude is wrong; Allah is the Noun and Allah is also the Verb Another notion many of us have is that this World is a sort of a Global Corporation. God is its MD and we are the its Executives We are very impressed by the modern day Worldly Corporate Culture We think that this is the best model. So we imagine that Qiyaamath Day would be a sort of a Board Meeting, or a convention. It is the day the MD is going to praise us, the day for the vote of thanks, and then to reward us for the improvements and developments we implemented in His Corporation The Universe Please re-think. How wrong we are! Can we wait till Qiyaamath Day to find out, or should we begin thinking NOW!!! So, how do we get to know God, how do we get to recognize Him. The Holy Quran is really the Book about God, about Allah. The word Allah itself appears in this book 2851 times, so we can just imagine how comprehensively God would have described Himself. And it is for us to read these descriptions which in themselves are called the Aayath of Allah or the signs of Allah and then try to identify Him try to recognize Him through these Aayath or these Signs. Lets see how Allah describes himself or introduces Himself in the Holy Quran. Allah Ar Rahman & Ar Raheem Al Malik Al Quddus As Salam Al Mu'min Al Muhaiyymin Al Azeez Al Jabbar Al Mutthakabbir Ar Razik (Ra Za Ka) 2851 339 206 10 140 879 2 119 10 161 123

Today, I am going to read a number of Aayaths, the complete Aayaths as well as quite a few phrases from this Aayaths Where God is telling us about Himself.

91 About ALLAH

The purpose of reading these Aayaths or these phrases, is so that listeners would think about these Aayaths and be convinced that these descriptions really do describe God as how God should be. Do we not all think about God? We wonder how he is. We wonder why he has created this huge Universe. We wonder at the mightily powerful but at the same time the beauty and order and system present in this Universe, all the time. We wonder at the many factors that are so predictable like Sunrise and Sunset and also wonder at so many phenomena that are predictable by their unpredictability like rainfall and many other day to day events. We build up a picture in our minds about how God would be. Many ingredients make up this composite picture, and then when we read the description of God as given by Himself in the Quran we are amazed at how describes Himself in words and in language that is more powerful than the words we formed in our minds. It is worthwhile spending a few minutes and listening to some of the Aayaths where God describes Himself. The description is in Arabic, so I have to read many of these Aayaths in Arabic before giving the translation. But to make it more effective I would be reading phrase by phrase Insha Allah 1 Certainly Allah is Most-Forgiving, (002:199) InnaLLaaha GHaffoorur Raheem Very-Merciful. 2 (002:220) InnaLLaaha ghazeezun hakeem Surely, Allah is Mighty, Wise. 3 (002:225) WaLLaaHu GHaffoorun haleem And Allah is Forgiving, Forbearing. 4 Allah is All-Embracing, All(002:261) WaLLaaHu waasighun ghaleem Knowing 5 (002:225) Wahuwal Galeeyul ghaleem 6 Allahu Laailaaha Illaa Allah! [002:255] Allah! There is no Allah but He,-the Living, the Self-subsisting, Eternal. No slumber can seize Him nor sleep.

His are all things in the heavens and on earth. Who is there can intercede in His presence except as He permitteth? He knoweth what (appeareth to His creatures as) before or after or behind them. Nor shall they compass aught of His knowledge except as He willeth. His Throne doth extend over the heavens and the earth, and He feeleth no fatigue in guarding and preserving them for He is the Most High, the Supreme (in glory).

32. 003:026 and 027

(3:26) Say: O Allah, O Maalik of the Kingdom, You give kingdom to whom You will, and take kingdom away from whom You will; and You bestow honor on whom You will, and bring disgrace to whom You will. In your hand lies the betterment (of everyone). You are surely powerful over everything. (3:27) You make the night enter into the day, and make the day enter into the night; and You bring the living out from the dead, and bring the dead out from the living, and You give to whom You will beyond measure.

Those that Allah Taala Loves 24

Those that Allah Taala does not like 27

91 About ALLAH

28

How could we attract the love of Allah Taaalah 29

And now one last Aayath;

(18:109) Say: "If the ocean were ink (wherewith to write out) the words of my Rabb, sooner would the ocean be exhausted than would the words of my Rabb,

even if we added another ocean like it, for its aid."

Do not all these Aayaths convince us that if there is a GOD this how GOD should be? We have to realize, we have to understand, we must develop the mind that always is on the lookout for the signs of Allah, for the Aayaths of Allah and learn to appreciate them as well as learn lessons fromthem. For this we need guidnce from GOD. So, may Allah Taaalah guide us all and accept us all. Jazza Kalla Khairan Assalamu Alaikum
