“The fact that we’re still here
is very satisfying.”
So says Marian Maggi of
her remarkable longevity as a
real estate agent and business
owner in the Berthoud area.
As RE/MAXTown & Country,
formerly Maggi Town & Coun-
try Real Estate, arrives at its
twentieth year, Marian and busi-
ness partner and son Gary are
reminiscent of their years in the
real estate business, which has
at times oscillated wildly and
other times been a wonderfully
steady career.
A Colorado native, Marian
settled, with her family, in the
Berthoud area in the early
1970s and has been there ever
since. She earned her real estate
license in 1985 – an era when
housing contracts were typed
on carbon paper and the Inter-
net had not yet overhauled the
way real estate business gets
done. From her earliest days
as an agent, Marian has clung
tenaciously to the Golden Rule
as a guiding business principle.
“It sounds simplistic,”she
says,“but I believe in treating
other people the way I’d like to
be treated.”
Marian worked for a local
agency for eight years, becom-
ing immersed in the trade, and
in 1993 the time was right to
open her own doors.Thus,
Maggi Town & Country Real Es-
tate began …in her own house!
“I guess it was kind of scary,”
she recalls.“We were working
out of my house for the frst six
weeks. But we hit the ground
running and were marketing
subdivisions right away.”
Son Gary proved a very capa-
ble business partner and offce
manager, jumping in with both
feet not long after graduating
from Colorado State University
with a degree in recreational
resource management and no
interest in real estate. Gary
would have had to leave the
state to work in his feld, but he
simply didn’t want to go. Mar-
ian gently suggested he sell real
estate, and 20 years later Gary
comments on the outcome of
his decision to do so.
“We’re lucky in that we make
good business partners,”he
says.“Mom is mom, of course,
but less so at work than outside
of work.We seem to get along
pretty well and mostly agree
on things, or we wouldn’t have
made it this far.Twenty years
have gone so fast, and we’ve
been sitting at the same desks
nearly the whole time.”
In 2008, Marian and Gary
made the diffcult but ultimate-
ly fruitful decision to become a
RE/MAX franchise and change
their name to RE/MAXTown
& Country.“It was a tough
decision because we’re fercely
independent people,”explains
Gary.“However, we knew we
needed to grow beyond our
zip code, and RE/MAX is a
great system with helpful tools.
It was a good choice for our
customers, for us and for our
agents.”
There are four other agents
in the offce and all have strong
community connections in the
Berthoud area. Kathy Burcham
worked in theThompson
School District for 35 years be-
fore joining the team. Kathleen
Gruman attended Berthoud
High School and is a founding
member of the MoonTheatre
Company. Laurie Johnson
worked alongside Marian in the
earliest days of her career. Mike
Patrick trains his own National
Champion German Shorthair
Pointers; one of which is a
two-time national champion,
and has been in the Berthoud
area since his family emigrated
from California in 1984. Offce
manager Sabrina Sommers
rounds out the gang, helping
keep everyone on track and
organized.
While the lion’s share of the
business goes to residential
sales, RE/MAXTown & Country
also deals in commercial prop-
erties, land sales, and property
management. So how does this
agency stand out when there
are so many real estate agents
and brokers competing for the
same business? “Real estate
is so regional now that we’re
essentially competing with
every licensee in the state,”says
Gary.“The Internet has changed
the way we attract buyers and
sellers. So we have to capitalize
on our strengths.”

Colorado.The Maggis and their
team have deep family roots in
the shadow of Longs Peak, and
the mountain has been good
to them.

bring May flowers, what do
winter’s snowflakes bring?
Perhaps it’s an excuse to
curl up with your favorite
magazines and imagine the
kitchen makeover of your
dreams. When the cold win-
ter months keep you in-
doors, use the time to take
care of things that will make
your remodeling plans much
easier to tackle in the
spring.-
Determine the scope of
your project:
Do you need just a few
coats of paint or a whole new
kitchen? Take this time to
evaluate what you want to ac-
complish. If you need to
work with a designer or con-
tractor, now is the time to do
your research and engage
professional help to plan.
Look to online resources like
the National Association of
the Remodeling Industry
and Houzz or ask friends
and family for recommenda-
tions. Meet with a few pros-
pects and see whose work
and costs fit your needs. You
should also determine your
budget and use that to guide
the rest of your planning de-
cisions.
Look for trends that last:
Once you have a good
sense for what your project
will involve, have fun dream-
ing up all the details. Are you
looking to make a bold state-
ment or create a timeless
look? No matter how large
or small your project, there

look at everything stored in
your kitchen and pantry and
determine what stays and
what can go. It’ll make prep-
ping for renovation projects
that much easier. How old
are those spices? What about
that stack of lids with no con-
tainer to match? Have lots of
totes and bags hanging
around? Donate the ones
you don’t use and organize
the rest. If you have kitchen
items you can’t part with but
you rarely use, pack them up
now and store them until the
remodel is complete. You’ll
want as much free space to
keep things out of the way
during your remodel as pos-
sible.

ums as a reward — isn’t a
new concept. It’s a perenni-
ally popular option, and the
benefits it offers can lead to
greater satisfaction and
greater savings.

with insurer QBE, says bun-
dling insurance policies of-
fers other benefits besides
lower premiums.
“Customer convenience is
one advantage,” says Valinot-
ti. “It’s easier to manage in-
surance policies when you
don’t have to work with mul-
tiple insurers.”
How can you get the big-
gest bang out of your insur-
ance bundle? Valinotti sug-
gests:
* Take a look at all your
insurance policies. If they’re
not with the same insurance
company, you could be los-
ing as much as 25 percent in
discounts.
* Consider adding an um-
brella policy. If you own your
home, an umbrella policy
gives you extra liability pro-
tection on your home and
car, and might earn you oth-
er discounts.
* Research options for
renters. Look into bundling a
renters policy with your car
insurance, which might re-
sult in as much as a 20 per-
cent discount on your auto
coverage.
Valinotti adds, “Make sure
you speak with your agent
about all available bundling
options and choose those
you’re most comfortable
with.”
