Florida Highwaymen
The Florida Highwaymen are very talented African-American artists. In the 1950s, because of segregation, neither conventional sales opportunities nor art galleries were open to African-Americans, so these black artists took to Florida's highways in order to sell their paintings. The Highwaymen were mostly self-taught painters, capturing the Florida landscape they knew best. In their heyday, Florida Highwaymen were not known as "Highwaymen" at all. In the mid-1990s, they were rediscovered by a man named Jim Fitch, a Florida art collector and museum curator. He is credited with coining the 'Florida Highway' moniker in a 1995 article in Antiques and Art Around Florida. features artwork and biographies of Highwaymen Curtis Arnett, Hezekiah Baker, Robert Butler and Willie Reagan.
