Designated For Assignment Fantasy Baseball League

2013 PRESEASON BRIEF

A Letter from the Commissioner

Fellow Owners and Esteemed Gentlemen of Summer:
It feels good to welcome you back to another season of fantasy baseball. The world did not end. Winter actually happened. Here at DFA Headquarters, we saw the pending apocalypse in two ways. If the Mayans had it right and shit happens, we didn't have to suffer through another miserable New York winter. But if they got it wrong? We got baseball. More importantly, we got fantasy baseball. Last year was, by far, the greatest season that this league has had. As owners, we were more involved than ever. Just by the numbers, you guys made more free agent pickups, trades, and roster modifications (as a whole) in 2012 than any year in league history. This little ragtag team of fantasy misfits finally put together more than a semi-functioning league. You all put together a dynasty. As commissioner, it was a blast to follow along. Since my team was in the basement after I decided to move them to Brooklyn and rebrand them the Barnyards, I was able to update the league page more often and moderate what little chatter there was on the message boards. That is my only wish as your commissioner: I wish the message boards were more alive. Baseball is a strategic game, and in fantasy baseball, owners can be just as calculating. I write this “Preseason Brief” to you because I want you to be ready. Our rapid-fire auction draft has grown in intensity since the first time we tried it. Even though we can't go a year without somebody bidding damn near $100 on a player, I'm hoping this preseason brief helps a few of you with your preparedness. More owners are becoming more active. The competition is getting better. Your commissioner is writing newsletters. It's not fantasy anymore, this shit is for real. The future is bright for our league. We've just agreed to up the entry fee to allow us to provide the winner with a trophy, in addition to the check. I feel like the fantasy baseball season is so long, which is why we shortened the season last year. That little tweak went a long way, especially preventing loss of fantasy baseball interest after the fantasy football season started. Now, our champion is crowned before the first regular season football kickoff in September. This year, we tweak again. We are adding two wild card spots to the playoffs. This means that a team with a losing record will be making the playoffs. It's not ideal, but it keeps owners interested longer. We also moved the trade deadline back a week. This year it will be Friday, August 2nd, at Noon, two days after the MLB trade deadline. Last year, we had our deadline set before the MLB deadline, which most owners didn't like. It's a pleasure to serve the you and the fantasy gods in this role of mine. I am both your Dear Leader and your Eternal Commissioner,

2012 Season Notes
• • • • • • • 2012 was the third season in a row that the team with the best overall record in the regular season didn't win the DFA title. The last time it was done was by Bill Barnhart's Albany DILLIGAF during our inaugural season in 2009. The DILLIGAF are also the only team in DFA history to make the playoffs the year after winning the championship (2009-2010). Bong Hits For Jesus did not lead the league in a single statistical category. Both semi-fnal playoff matchups ended in a tie, the tiebreaker automatically given to the higher seeded team. Bong Hits For Jesus and MF Dancing Bears both made their second consecutive playoff appearance, while the Stickynuggets earned their second playoff berth in the past four years. 2012 marked the frst time the Albany DILLIGAF did not make it to the postseason. The Butternuts Blue Balls clinched their frst ever postseason berth after fnishing in 9th place in 2011

If We Had A wards...
“Aces in the Hole” (Best Pitching Staff) – MF Dancing Bears The Dancing Bears led four out of fve pitching categories on the season. Led by C.C. Sabathia, Justin Verlander, and Jered Weaver, the MF Dancing Bears' Big Three led them to a berth in the DFA Finals. “Bombs Over Butternuts” (Best All-Around Batting Lineup) – Butternuts Blue Balls Leading in Home Runs and RBIs, second in AVG and Rs, third in SB. If that doesn't win awards, I'm not sure what will. The Blue Balls are carried on the very stout backs of outfelders Bryce Harper, Ryan Braun, Josh Hamilton, and Justin Upton. Talk about Murderer's Row. “Grand Theft Raw-toe” (Fastest Team) – Caywood Rawhide Reamers The Reamers had seven players record double-digit steals, with two of those players scoring over 100 runs each. Did anyone know that David Wright stole 15 bases last year? Really? Throw in Trout's 49 and we got ourselves the fastest team in the league. “Hit 'Em Where They Ain't” (Best Contact Hitting) – Hector Stank Ho's We got to witness the frst Triple Crown winner in our lifetime in Miguel Cabrera, and on top that, the Stank Ho's had Buster Posey, Joy Votto, Allen Craig, and Yadier Molina all slap the ball around at over a .300 average. Only one Stank Ho hitter hit under .270 by season's end. Worst Hitting Team – Detroit Dutch Rudders Was league-worst in three hitting categories and the only team with an average in the .250s. Worst Pitching Team – Brooklyn Barnyards Lowest Ws, ERA, and WHIP in the league is a recipe for disaster.

League Rules and Addendum
League Fees: $25 entry fee for each owner, each year. $20 goes into the payout, $5 goes into trophy fund. Payout: Winner of the DFA Playoffs receives $200 via cash or check. Winner also receives a personalized trophy to keep until the end of time. Scoring: ESPN Standard, Weekly Head-to-Head, 10 categories (R, HR, RBI, SB, AVG/W, K, SV, ERA, WHIP) Tiebreakers: Scoring: When a scoring category is tied, the tie will be awarded to the home team. If more than one scoring category is tied, the frst tie will go to the home team, the second tie will go to the away team, and so on until all tied categories are settled. Head-to-Head: Regular season matchups may end in a 5-5 tie, resulting in each team being awarded fve wins and fve losses. In the playoffs, if two teams are tied 5-5 at the end of the matchup week, the lower (#1 being the lowest) seeded team will advance to the next round of the playoffs. Rosters: Rosters consist of 22 players. There are nine starters on offense (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, OF, OF, OF, UTIL) and eight starters for pitching (SP, SP, SP, SP, RP, RP, P, P). Any batter, regardless of position, can play the UTIL position. Any pitcher, regardless of role, may play the P position. Each team has fve bench spots for any mix of batters or pitchers. Owners also have access to Disabled List (DL) positions, where injured players may be assigned and kept without using up a roster spot. Draft: The DFA Draft is an online auction draft.. In order and by round, owners nominate players for all owners to bid on. The owner with the highest bid for a player when time expires has drafted the player. Owners are given a $250 budget for the draft, of which they are encouraged to spend it all. Keepers: Each owner may select up to six players to keep from the end of one season into the beginning of the next. The salaries of these keepers will be subtracted from each owner's draft budget. An owner does not have to use all six keeper selections. Any unused keeper selections will be replaced with an additional nomination for that owner in the draft. Lineup changes: Owners may change their lineups daily. Individual players lock at the start of their game on each day. There have been cases where all players have locked at the start of the frst game of the day. Free Agent Auction Bidding (FAAB) and Waivers: When a player is placed on waivers, any owner may bid on him. When the waiver period expires, the owner with the highest bid will be awarded the player. Waivers process each week on Friday and Sunday nights, at 11pm Eastern Time. The minimum bid for a player is $0. Teams are given a $150 budget after the draft to spend on free agents and waiver pickups for the rest of the season, including playoffs. The FAAB (Free Agent Auction Bidding) budget is completely separate from the draft budget.
