Palacios on U.S. tour
raising awareness of 89
anti-LGBT murders
By LOU CHIBBARO JR.
lchibbaro@washblade.com
Jose Pepe Palacios says his mission is
to inform the U.S. government and LGBT
Americans that at least 89 LGBT people in
Honduras, including gay rights advocates,
have been murdered since military leaders
ousted his countrys elected president in a
2009 coup.
Palacios, a resident of the capital
city of Tegucigalpa, began a seven-city
U.S. tour in Chicago on Jan. 30. He was
scheduled to arrive in Washington, D.C.
on Wednesday, where, among other
appearances, he was to speak on Friday
at noon at a public gathering at the ofces
of the National Council of Churches at 110
Maryland Ave., N.E., on Capitol Hill.
He told the Washington Blade that he
hopes to build support in the U.S. for a
coalition of LGBT and progressive groups in
his country that seek to peacefully challenge
anti-democratic forces they believe are
responsible for many of the murders.
The Obama administration has said
they will promote human rights and LGBT
rights, Palacios said. And Hilary Clinton
said that human rights are gay rights. So
one of the reasons Im doing this is to
ask for support to pressure the Honduran
government to investigate these cases
and also to create awareness of the
number of these cases.
Palacios was scheduled to meet this
week with members of the staff of U.S.
Sen. Tammy Baldwin (D-Wisc.) and U.S.
Rep. Jared Polis (D-Colo.).
Andy Thayer, co-founder of the
Chicago-based Gay Liberation Network,
which is one of the sponsors of Palacios
U.S. tour, said human rights activists in
Honduras believe many if not most of the
LGBT murders following the 2009 coup
were motivated by political retribution.
According to Thayer, a majority of the
LGBT community in Honduras has been
supportive of a resistance movement that
has opposed the post-coup government
and participates in demonstrations
against government leaders.
Palacios said that among the LGBT
people murdered since the coup were gay
activist Walter Torchez and gay candidate
for the Honduran Congress, Eric Martinez
Alvia, an organizer for the Liberty and
Refoundation Party, or LIBRE, which
represents many of the resistance groups
protesting against the current government.
Palacios is a founding member of
Diversity Movement in Resistance (MDR),
an LGBT advocacy organization. He is
also a member of the National Steering
Committee of the Honduras National
Front of Popular Resistance (NRP), which
has staged protest demonstrations
against the government.
Thayer called the LGBT murders a
systematic campaign of targeted hate
crimes and political assassination. He
said that as the country gears up for its rst
contested election since the coup, set to
take place in November, many fear that
the violence will get even worse.
The LGBT murders come at a time when
Honduras has the distinction of having
the highest murder rate of any country in
the world. The U.S. State Departments
country report on Honduras says many of
the murders are related to warring drug
cartels and abject poverty that forces
desperate people to commit armed
robberies often resulting in killings.
The report acknowledges that some of
the murders are due to political rivalries.
Human rights observers have said corrupt
police ofcers or law enforcement ofcials
allied with entrenched political factions are
also believed to be responsible for some
of the murders, including the slayings of
LGBT activists.
Palacios said that of the 89 LGBT
murders since 2009, 52 of the victims were
transgender women.
The United States is focused on helping
the Honduran government combat
impunity, resolve murder cases, reform the
Honduran police, and strengthen human
rights institutions, said Evan Owen, press
ofcer for the State Departments Bureau
of Democracy, Human Rights and Labor.
The 2009 coup, which resulted in the
ouster of President Manuel Zelaya, took place
amid a constitutional dispute over whether
Zelaya had authority to call a non-binding
referendum to determine whether public
support existed to hold a constitutional
convention and make signicant changes in
the nations political system.
As an ally of Venezuelan President Hugo
Chavez, Zelayas move toward constitutional
changes alarmed the conservative factions
in the country, who feared he would put in
place a Chavez-style socialist government.
Supporters, including many LGBT activists,
believed Zelaya was seeking to make
needed reforms to lift the majority of the
countrys population from conditions of
poverty and despair.
The Obama administration denounced
the coup and called for an immediate
restoration of the countrys democratic
institutions. But activists in the U.S. and
Honduras have said the U.S. appeared
to have been privately supportive of the
coup. Palacios said it is widely known
in the country that Honduran military
leaders, who took Zelaya into custody, ew
him to a U.S. military base in Honduras
before ying him to Costa Rica, where he
remained in exile for several years.
Further suspicions of U.S. motives
surfaced a few months later, when the
U.S. gave its backing to elections called
and arranged by coup leaders under
supervision of international observers. The
countrys current president, Porrio Lobo
of the conservative National Party, won
that election.
Owen of the State Department declined
to comment on allegations by activists
that the U.S. support for the current
government was giving tacit support
for violence against gays and others
by corrupt elements, including police,
associated with the government.
We strongly support the rule of law and
respect for the constitutional separation
of powers as well as a fair and transparent
democratic process, Owen said of the
U.S. policy toward Honduras. He said the
U.S., among other things, is providing
assistance to the Honduran government
to strengthen its investigative capacity
to combat possible human rights abuses.
With that as a backdrop, the left-
leaning LIBRE Party last year nominated
through a primary election Zelayas wife,
Xiomara Castro, as its candidate for
president in the November 2013 election.
In a development that has thrilled LGBT
activists, including Palacios, the LGBT
supportive Castro (whos not related to
Cubas Fidel Castro) has emerged as
the leading candidate in a Gallup Poll
conducted in January.
Her husband, who cant run for
president under the constitutions term
limit provision, is running for a seat in the
Congress.
In what LGBT advocates consider a
historic development, a transgender
woman and an openly gay man ran in last
years primary for congressional seats as
LIBRE candidates. Both lost their races,
but Palacios called their candidacies
and the LIBRE partys support for LGBT
equality a major advance for his country.

French lawmakers approve marriage bill
The French National Assembly on Tuesday approved a bill that would allow
same-sex couples to marry and adopt children.
The 329-229 vote capped off a marathon debate on the proposal that began
on Jan. 29.
Opponents and supporters of same-sex marriage and gay adoption also
staged a number of demonstrations through the streets of Paris over the last few
months that drew hundreds of thousands of people.
Today France took an important rst step on the path for full equality for all
citizens, said Brian Ellner, who directed the Human Rights Campaigns efforts in
support of New Yorks same-sex marriage bill that Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed
into law in June 2011. He is among the more than 100,000 people who took part
in a Jan. 27 demonstration in the French capital in support of the bill. We all look
forward to nal passage of the law and the impact it will have around the globe,
including here in the United States.
Belgium, Denmark, the Netherlands and Spain are among the European
countries that allow same-sex couples to marry.
The British House of Commons last week overwhelmingly approved a bill
that would allow gays and lesbians to tie the knot in England and Wales a
parliamentary committee on Tuesday debated the proposal. Scottish lawmakers
in the coming weeks are also expected to consider the issue.
This is a historic moment for France, Andre Banks, executive director of All
Out, which delivered 200,000 signatures in support of the proposal to lawmakers
and ministers, said. French polls overwhelmingly demonstrate French people
are in favor of marriage for gays and lesbians. I hope the French Senate passes
the bill swiftly.
The French Senate is expected to begin debating the proposal on April 2.

the LGBT military group OutServe-SLDN,
said Obama was very clear that gay
service members and their families should
be treated equally but noted the work
isnt nished.
To nish the task, the Supreme Court
must strike down the so-called Defense of
Marriage Act, Robinson said. Secretary
Panettas successor must enact equal
opportunity and non-discrimination
policies that protect LGBT troops and
ensure Americas military can attract and
retain Americas best. And outmoded,
obsolete policies that bar qualied
American patriots who are transgender
from military service must be eliminated.
A less overt but more forward looking
reference to the LGBT community
came at the beginning of his speech
when Obama alluded to gay people
when talking about removing barriers
preventing Americans from joining the
middle class no matter who you love.
It is our generations task, then, to
reignite the true engine of Americas
economic growth, Obama said. It is our
unnished task to restore the basic bargain
that built this country the idea that if you
work hard and meet your responsibilities,
you can get ahead, no matter where you
come from, or who you love.
That remark has been interpreted as
a call on Congress to pass employment
non-discrimination protections because
the absence of such a law is seen as an
impediment to LGBT workers reaching
economic prosperity. Prior to the address,
advocates were hopeful Obama would use
the occasion of the State of the Union address
to push for passage of the Employment Non-
Discrimination Act and pledge to issue an
executive order barring federal contractors
from engaging in anti-LGBT job bias.
Tico Almeida, president of Freedom to
Work, was among those who interpreted
the remarks as an allusion to the need to
outlaw workplace discrimination against
LGBT Americans but called on Obama
to take more action.
First, the president should sign the
executive order adding LGBT workplace
protections to almost 25 percent of all
American jobs, Almeida said. Second,
he should encourage Senate Majority
Leader Harry Reid to keep his three-year-
old promise to bring ENDA to a vote on
the Senate oor for a long overdue vote.
Almeida added he wants Obama
to explicitly call on both chambers of
Congress to pass ENDA in another
speech sometime before the Senate vote
expected this year.
Fred Sainz, vice president of
communications for the Human Rights
Campaign, took a broader view.
I think that its broader and more
signicant in that it includes kind of a
broad sweep of the inclusion of gay
people in the middle class, Sainz said.
And so, it has everything to do with
employment and opportunity and every
hope and dream that LGBT have.
Asked whether the language satises
his previous call for Obama to lay out
plans for the LGBT executive order during
the State of the Union, Sainz said he thinks
it falls short of that request, but said its still
signicant.
I dont think he necessarily speaks to
it directly, but I do think that it is further
evidence of mainstreaming of LGBT
people in all aspects of American life,
Sainz said.
The LGBT references build off the
stronger references that Obama made
during his inaugural speech when he
invoked the Stonewall riots and said the
love we commit to one another must
be equal. In his three previous State of
the Union speeches, Obama has also
mentioned the LGBT community and
talked about Dont Ask, Dont Tell repeal.
But an LGBT references was notably
left out of Obamas speech when he
talked about the importance of passing
comprehensive immigration reform
without mentioning the potential
separation that bi-national same-sex
couples face in the United States.
Instead, Obama talked about a
responsible pathway to citizenship that
includes a background check and learning
English and xing problems in the legal
immigration system. Obama included gay
couples in the plan he unveiled for reform.

the future of humanity itself during his
2012 State of the World address.
Benedict, who was previously known as
Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, also enforced
the Vaticans moral doctrine before his
election to the papacy.
He wrote in a 1986 letter that gay men
and lesbians are intrinsically disordered.
Benedict also said in the same document
that gay organizations could no longer
use church property.
The Vaticans ongoing opposition to
condom use as a way to stop the spread
HIV/AIDS has also sparked outrage
among advocates.
I am well aware that this ministry, due to
its essential spiritual nature, must be carried
out not only with words and deeds, but no
less with prayer and suffering, the pope
said. However, in todays world, subject to so
many rapid changes and shaken by questions
of deep relevance for the life of faith, in
order to govern the bark of Saint Peter and
proclaim the Gospel, both strength of mind
and body are necessary, strength which in
the last few months, has deteriorated in me
to the extent that I have had to recognize my
incapacity to adequately fulll the ministry
entrusted to me.
Cardinal Donald Wuerl of the
Archdiocese of Washington applauded
Benedict in a statement released after his
sudden resignation.
Pope Benedict XVIs legacy is his
engagement of faith with the modern
world, he said. He has called on all of
us to focus on the spiritual mission of the
Church, proclaim the Gospel and once
again, bring this personal relationship all
of us are capable of having with God, back
to the foreground.
Pope Benedict often cited the
signicance of eternal truths and he warned
of a dictatorship of relativism, Cardinal
Timothy Dolan of the Archdiocese of New
York added. Some values, such as human
life, stand out above all others, he taught
again and again. It is a message for eternity.
Canadian Cardinal Marc Ouelett,
Cardinal Christoph Schoenborn of the
Archdiocese of Vienna, Ghanaian Cardinal
Peter Turkson and Cardinal Francis Arinze
of Nigeria are among those Vatican
observers speculate could succeed
Benedict.
Turkson told the National Catholic
Register in February 2012 that some
provisions contained within laws that
criminalize homosexuality in African
countries including Ugandas so-called
Kill the Gays bill that would impose the
death penalty upon anyone convicted
of repeated same-sex sexual acts are
an exaggeration. He stressed during
the same interview the intensity of the
reaction to homosexuality is probably
commensurate with tradition.
LGBT Catholics respond to papal resignation
Marianne Duddy-Burke, president of
Dignity USA, a group comprised of LGBT
Catholics, is among those who said they
hope Benedicts successor will temper the
Vaticans opposition to homosexuality and
reach out to the gay faithful.
We commend Benedict for stepping
down for the benet of the church and I
think nows the time to look ahead, she
told the Washington Blade from Boston.
We would obviously be looking for a
pope who is committed to ending the
dehumanizing attacks on LGBT people
and our families that have been the
hallmarks of the last 25-plus years. We
would call for our new pope to enter into
a real dialogue with our community.
Dignity Washington President Daniel
Barutta agreed.
Like most Catholics in the world, I was
shocked, he told the Blade. I just really
appreciate him taking the churchs welfare
into account and putting his ego aside. I
thought it was a pretty brave thing for him
to do on his part.
Members of Dignity Washington held
signs along Rock Creek Parkway in 2009
as Benedicts motorcade drove from the
White House to the Vatican embassy on
Massachusetts Avenue in Northwest D.C.
during his visit to the United States.
Barutta said the pope has been pretty
clear how he feels about our community.
We disagree with the tenor of his
comments, he added when asked about
Benedicts legacy. Were hopeful that
whoever the new pope is that the person will
be much more inclusive and try to take into
account the diversity of the Catholic Church.
Former D.C. resident Phil Attey of the
now disbanded group Catholics for Equality
remains fearful that Benedicts successor will
be even more anti-gay than he.
What it means to me is that the
most hateful and mean spirited pope in
the history of the Catholic Church is so
determined to continue his reign of terror
beyond his life on earth, Attey said.
Hes going to orchestrate his succession,
ensuring the next pope carries on his
mission to demonize, marginalize and
oppress every gay man who comes out of
the closet and demands to be treated as
equals among Gods children.
Joseph Palacios, who also advocates for
LGBT inclusion within the church, agreed.

will devote its Feb. 26 meeting to
understanding transgender issues.
Sharon Brackett, board chair of Gender
Rights Maryland, will present Trans 101,
an introductory speech on transgender
issues in our society and in our area.
She will dene basic terms and answer
general questions, as well as provide
more detailed explanations of the specic
implications of being a gender non-
conforming individual.
The meeting will take place from 7-9
p.m. at the Towson Unitarian Universalist
Church, 1710 Dulaney Valley Rd.,
Baltimore. For more information, visit

Baltimore Eagle to
re-open in 2014?
The Baltimore Eagle, a mainstay of
Baltimores leather community since 1991,
closed in December following its sale,
leaving many in the community uncertain
as to the bars fate. The previous owner,
Richard Richardson died suddenly in 2007.
He bought the bar from founder Tom
Kiple in 1995. Since Richardsons death,
the Baltimore Eagle had been operated
by his estate until it was sold.
New owner Ian Parrish, a successful
developer, indicated that the building,
which is located at 2022 N. Charles St.,
will undergo extensive renovations and
upgrades to the structure. This could take
as much as a year to complete.
According to his own website
IanCharlesParrish.com, Parrish has been a
private investor in tens of millions of dollars
in real estate transactions over a career
that spans nearly two decades [He] was
named Young Entrepreneur of the Year
by the U.S. Small Business Administration.
He has earned ofcial citations from both
the Mayor of Baltimore and the Governor
of Maryland for outstanding leadership
and commitment to the community.
Parrish told the Blade that the Baltimore
Eagle will re-open as a leather bar with
the same name. He said that he plans to
hire a management team to operate the
establishment.
Parrish has been collaborating with
neighborhood associations as well as former
Baltimore Eagle bartenders, patrons and
leather club members to obtain input as to
the desired physical layout of the building
and other concepts. Its not me who
determines how the bar should be, he
explained. Its the community. He urges
the community to check the bars website at
TheBaltimoreEagle.com for progress reports.
PFLAG chapters stand
behind trans rights bill
Six Maryland PFLAG chaptersHoward
County, Baltimore County, Frederick
County, Chestertown, Carroll County and
Washington, DC/Metro Areacame out in
strong support of SB449, the Fairness For
All Marylanders Act, which would prohibit
discrimination on the basis of gender
identity and gender expression in Maryland.
Introduced on Jan. 29 by Sens. Rich
Madaleno and Jamie Raskin, both
Democrats from Montgomery County, the
measure has 23 co-sponsors, the most of
any similar legislation in previous years.
June Horner of PFLAG-Westminster/
Carroll County said, Every single person in
our state deserves an equal opportunity to
live a life which is free from discrimination.

Bullying reports decline by late teens, 20s
NEW YORK Many gay and bi teens bullied in school nd the problem eases
considerably in time a new study from England, reported by Health Day News, nds.
Researchers, the report said, found that out of about 4,100 teens ages 13 and 14
surveyed, those who identied as gay or bi were more likely to have reported being
called names and physically hurt. About 57 percent of girls and 52 percent of boys who
are gay or bi reported such experiences compared to about 40 percent of their straight
counterparts, the report said.
Researchers reported in the March issue of Pediatrics magazine, that by ages 19 and
20, lesbian/bi women and gay/bi men reported signicantly fewer instances 6 and 9
percent respectively, the report said.
Lead researcher Joseph Robinson said the ndings support the personal testimonies
beyond the It Gets Better video series.
Weve been giving kids a message of hope and this is showing that its not a false hope.
Trans health ofcer offers sensitivity classes
SAN FRANCISCO A transgender woman on the Health Commission in San
Francisco who previously advocated for the Department of Public Health there to pay
for gender reassignment surgeries for uninsured transgender patients has developed
sessions called Transgender 101 to increase trans sensitivity and awareness there, the San
Francisco Chronicle reported.
Cecilia Chung says the classes are needed and important.
We want to make sure everyone is on the same page when it comes to cultural
competency, the Chronicle quoted Chung as saying. This is really walking the walk in terms
of cultural competency and inclusion and making sure all of our community feels safe.
More advanced classes on transgender issues are being developed for specialists, the
report said.
Older LGBT San Fran residents face challenges
SAN FRANCISCO And in other San Francisco news, a new report there found that
elderly LGBT residents are more likely to be living in poverty, single, childless, renters and
living with HIV than their counterparts in other cities, the Bay Area Reporter reported last
week. Most have also experienced the death of a partner, the paper said.
The report, LGBT Older Adults in San Francisco: Health, Risks and Resilience by
Karen Fredriksen-Goldsen at the University of Washington, was federally nanced and
was developed with help from San Franciscos LGBT Aging Policy Task Force to address
the needs of LGBT seniors there.
The news wasnt all bad nearly all LGBT seniors surveyed have some form of health
care coverage and most consider themselves to be in good health. About 81 percent
regularly see a doctor, the article said.
The report found that 41 percent of the participants had seriously considered suicide,
62 percent lacked companionship and 58 percent felt isolated. One-quarter were not out
to their neighbors, the Reporter noted.
In terms of employment discrimination, 31 percent said they had not been hired for
a job due to being LGBT, 29 percent were denied a job promotion and 21 percent said
they were red.
The report is available online at sf-hrc.org.
Risky behavior linked
to other factors: study
NEW YORK Issues of racism, homophobia, depression and post-traumatic
stress disorder all contribute to the HIV rates in young black and Latino men, a
new study from the journal AIDS and Behavior has found according to a report
from Futurity, a site that relays research news from around the world.
The study is part of a large research effort called Project-18, which follows 600
urban HIV-negative young men who self-identify as men who have sex with men
(MSM) in New York. Theyre being monitored every six months for three years as
they transition from adolescence into adulthood, the site reported.
The latest published ndings are that mental health, drug use and unprotected
sex are often linked.
The more burden these men face for being persons of color, economically
disadvantaged, homosexual, foreign born and simply discriminated against,
impact their mental health, Perry Halkitis, director of the Center of Health, Identity,
Behavior and Prevention Studies at New York University, was quoted as saying.
Our additional analysis found that foreign-born men of lower socioeconomic
status demonstrates a greater likelihood of unprotected sex.
Halkitis said mental health burdens tend to exacerbate risky behavior such as
drug and alcohol abuse and unprotected sex.
Halkitis got a $2.9 million grant from the National Institute of Healths National
Institute of Drug Abuse in 2009 to begin the study. He believes psychological and
mental health issues and HIV are highly related.

Is your body ready for
end of sweater season?
Its February and D.C. just dodged
a major bullet with the blizzard that
paralyzed New England over the weekend.
If youre like many of my clients, the colder
it gets, the harder it gets to stay motivated
to brave the tundra and make your way to
the gym.
But, as you are cuddled up next to the
replace eating your Valentines candies
and drinking hot chocolate with Baileys,
remember one thing: Sweater season will
be over soon. Thats right, you have a small
window left before you will be forced to
peel away those layers and have to show
all of your hard work or lack thereof
from the winter. Dont panic just yet, as I
have some tips to keep you motivated and
on track through the spring.
Pework tbat workout. We are about
seven weeks out since you have been
attacking your New Years resolutions, but
by now you are probably becoming quite
bored of the same routine. A few easy ways
to breathe new life to your workout can be
to simply change the order, increase the
weight or challenge yourself to complete
it in a certain time. If that doesnt do the
trick, then I suggest using some different
tools in the gym. If you havent yet, try
using a TRX band, BOSU ball, kettle bell,
medicine ball, Swiss ball or battle ropes
within your workout. YouTube is a great
place to learn some new moves with new
tools. Remember the more variety you
have the better results you will see.
Find a buddy. When you are hitting
an unmotivated period, its quite easy to
convince yourself that a night of Mexican
food, margaritas and Modern Family
is always a better idea than stopping by
to pump some iron, but thats harder to
do in a pair. Grabbing a workout partner
who is of your level or a little higher can
be a great motivator for both of you.
Usually when you dont want to go, they
do and vice versa. Also theres a certain
responsibility you feel for the other person
to not let them down.
New pics, new goaI. Who doesnt
love a great shirtless photo? I use photos
to help with motivation because pictures
dont lie, people and long islands do.
Taking a new photo of yourself every six
weeks and putting it somewhere visible
can be a good way to make you see if you
are moving in the right direction. With
each picture you should change your
short-term goals and focus. These two
tactics together can be a great way to
show you tangible progress.
Poke a PersonaI Trainer. Some of the
best motivation for sticking to your tness
plan is paying someone. If you are nding
it hard to get yourself up to the task, the
thought of knowing your trainer will be
paid whether you come or not is a good
incentive to stick to the game plan. Besides
making you sweat out the red wine from
last night, your personal trainer should
also keep it fun and interesting. The key to
reaching that plateau is pushing yourself
out of your comfort zone and consistency,
two things a good personal trainer should
always provide. Also it doesnt hurt if your
personal trainer is attractive too, every
motivation counts. So stay motivated and
stay t.

Tips for practicing safer
sex this Valentines Day
February is National Condom Month.
Appropriate for the same month as
Valentines Day when all that talk of love
can make one amorous.
But, when the mood strikes, are you
taking precautions to protect yourself?
Based on reports from here in D.C. and
around the nation, many people arent.
More than three decades into the HIV/
AIDS epidemic, were still telling people
about the importance of condoms.
Even with recent advancements in HIV
prevention, there are still STDs that can
change your life.
Watched the news lately? A drug-
resistant strain of gonorrhea has just been
found in North America. And untreated
gonorrhea could have some really nasty
effects on your body.
Condoms arent a 100 percent guarantee
against STDs and wont protect against
everything. But using them correctly and
consistently will dramatically reduce your
chances of catching an infection.
Most condom failures are due to
user mistakes, including damaging the
condom when opening it or and were
not kidding here putting it on wrong. You
may think that using a condom is simple.
But many people still dont understand
how to use them properly.
So how do you use a condom correctly?
Lets take this step by step:
se a new concom lor each sex acr.
Recycling is not good here.
se only larex or polyurerhane
condoms. Lambskin condoms do not
protect against HIV.
pen rhe packae carelully.
Fur on rhe concom alrer erecrion
but before insertion. For someone whos
uncut, pull the foreskin back before you
put the condom on.
Finch rhe rip ro leave a lirrle Lir ol
room. Even if there isnt a reservoir end,
squeeze the tip.
Holc rhe rip anc unroll rhe concom all
the way down.
nce rhey've.lnishec.holc rhe
condom close to the base of the penis
and pull out.
Throw ir away immeciarely.
If you feel a condom break during sex,
stop, pull out immediately and use a new
one. Most condom breakage is due to
lack of lubrication, so lube it up.
Now, a few other points you need to
remember:
nly use warerLasec or silicone
lubricant. Anything else will damage the
latex and could cause the condom to
break. Leave the avored lubricants to
make oral sex yummier, as they are not
made for intercourse.
Concoms have a shell lile rhey
arent Twinkies. Check the expiration date
on the package and throw out expired
condoms.
Don'r carry concoms in your Lack
pocker or waller. Frolonec exposure ro
body heat and moisture can weaken them.
se a shirr pocker or prorecrive case.
If you use condoms consistently and
correctly, you can greatly reduce your risk
of catching many STDs, including HIV,
gonorrhea and chlamydia.
Condoms are less effective against
STDs like herpes, syphilis or human
papillomavirus, which are spread by skin-
to-skin contact instead of through body
uids. But, if the condom covers the
infected area or site of possible exposure,
it can sometimes reduce the risk of
infection.
If you want to reduce your risk of STDs,
condoms should be just one tool in your
toolkit, including:
Talk wirh your parrner(s) aLour your
sexual history and HIV/STD status.
Frequenr Hv/STD resrin il you have
more than one partner.
Fecucin rhe numLer ol sexual
partners you may have.
Checkin each orher lor sins anc
symptoms of STDs before sex.
Explorin orher sexual inreresrs
besides penetrative sex.
Learnin aLour Fosr Exposure anc
FreExposure Frophylaxis (FEF anc
FrEF), which use mecicarions ro srop Hv
infection if exposed.
Whitman-Walker can help you with
everything here: access to condoms,
education about proper use, and free
STD testing. Were here to help and to
make sure that you live a long, happy and
healthy life.

Timothy Ray Brown,
the Berlin Patient,
loves life and riding
As I watched Timothy Ray Brown
mount his new red mountain bike, my
parental instincts kicked in. What if he fell
or couldnt stop or hurts himself in some
other way? Frightened, I kept visualizing
how the media would handle the story:
Timothy Ray Brown, the rst person
cured of HIV, dies, theyd say, but not
from HIV or cancer or his chemotherapy,
stem cell transplant or other invasive
treatments. Rather, he fell off his bicycle
and succumbed to a severe head injury.
The answer for an HIV cure for the world
lies within Timothy, somewhere. Im aware
some may criticize Timothys riding a bike
or going skydiving, bungee jumping, even
driving a car. Yes, hes the rst person to
be cured of the worlds most unrelenting
disease, but whats even more important
is hes a human being who wants to live
life to its fullest.
The Berlin Patient is the name the
media gave Brown. At the time, he was
living in Berlin and wished to remain
anonymous. Why the anonymity? Because
Timothy couldnt believe it was true, he
told us. He feared his cure was temporary
and the HIV would return. After all, he
said, it was only a year or so earlier that
his leukemia had resurfaced. Of course,
eventually the media learned his name.
On Feb. 20, Timothy celebrates the
sixth anniversary of the procedure that led
to his cure.
As many of you know, Im the founder
and Chad Johnson is the co-founder of the
World AIDS Institute (WAI), established to
document and preserve the global history
of AIDS, inspire action today to improve
the lives of people living with HIV and AIDS
(and their family, friends, and communities)
and strengthen the spectrum of innovative
initiatives to nd a cure.
Timothy is co-founder of WAI and
founder of the Timothy Ray Brown
Foundation of WAI that Chad and I helped
launch eight months ago. The Timothy
Ray Brown Foundation is the worlds rst
organization in the 31-year history of the
AIDS epidemic whose sole mission is to
nd a cure for HIV.
Let me tell you a story. A few months
ago, I was having lunch with Timothy
when he said in a burst of outrage
he wanted to go to the top of the Empire
State Building and tell the world about the
injustices people living with HIV face on a
daily basis. Timothy vowed he would use
his energy to make this right.
I told Timothy that I understood his
anger and frustration, but felt diluting
our message nding a cure might be
counterproductive. I think not, he said,
pointing out he had been HIV positive
twice as long as he has been cured. Then he
looked at me the same way he did months
ago when he told me he was launching an
organization to nd a cure. His plan was to
announce it during the 19th International
AIDS Conference in Washington, D.C. He
asked us to help him.
The day before we were to launch
the Timothy Ray Brown Foundation,
we hosted a reception with Speaker
Nancy Pelosi at the Library of Congress. I
remember seeing her aide whisper to her
that Timothy was at the other end of the
room. It would be the rst time they would
meet. Immediately, she started toward
Timothy. As they met in the middle of the
room, she looked him in the eyes and said,
You are miracle. You are a miracle. Then
they embraced. She held onto him for a
long time as if his energy would help heal
the wounds of the hundreds of people in
her California district who had died from
AIDS, many of them her friends.
It is true: Timothy Ray Brown may be a
miracle. But he also is a human being. And
if he wants to ride his new red mountain
bike, he should do it as fast and as far as
he wants. Timothy Ray Brown, the rst
person in the world cured of HIV, wants to
live life to the fullest.

From Pope Benedict to
Anderson Cooper, a look
at how things have
changed in 10 years
Over the past 10 years, Ive often used this
space to target and critique a series of anti-
LGBT gures from politicians to criminals to
closeted celebrities. My attacks have ranged
from stinging to the occasional angry full-on
takedown. Its remarkable how much things
have changed for the LGBT movement in
those 10 years. So a quick look back at some
of my favorite targets of the last decade and
how they have evolved during that time.
1. The Democratic National Committee.
This might seem an unexpected target, but
the reality is that the partys support for LGBT
rights and legislation is an Obama phenom-
enon. From Bill Clintons support for DOMA
to Howard Deans ring of a gay liaison and
other shenanigans (pitting black delegates
against gay ones, denigrating the gay press
and threatening to sue the Blade), the Demo-
cratic Party has a complicated history with our
community. Obama deserves the credit for
turning around that sorry record. Today, the
Democratic Party includes marriage equality
in its platform. Ten years ago, there had been
no movement on pro-LGBT federal legisla-
tion. Today, we have an expanded hate crimes
law and have repealed Dont Ask, Dont Tell.
DOMA is next to go.
2. The Bush administration. George W.
Bush became the gay communitys public en-
emy No. 1 after his cynical assault on marriage
equality in 2004, a crusade masterminded in
part by former RNC Chair and Bush-Cheney
campaign manager Ken Mehlman. The Bush
years were ugly, from his calls for a federal mar-
riage amendment to an odd and stubborn
refusal to even utter the word gay in public.
Ten years later, Mehlman is out of the closet
and raising money to support marriage equal-
ity. Dick Cheney supports marriage equality,
as does Laura Bush. And George has paid a
steep price for his horrendous, reckless presi-
dency relegated to the dustbin of history
and rendered persona non grata at last years
Republican National Convention. He is rightly
blamed for the countrys economic mess and
will be remembered as among the worst presi-
dents in American history.
3. Martin OMalley. Another unlikely tar-
get, considering OMalley was popular with
LGBT residents of Baltimore from his days as
a City Council member and mayor. He even
endorsed marriage equality in a TV interview
years before running for governor. He later
disavowed that interview and was booed off
the stage at a private LGBT donor gathering
after advocating for civil unions over full mar-
riage rights. After a 2007 court ruling limiting
marriage to opposite-sex couples, OMalley
issued a cruel, stinging statement invoking the
Catholic sacraments and reiterating a call for
civil unions. But after New York Gov. Andrew
Cuomo successfully shepherded marriage
through a Republican Senate there, OMalley
had an epiphany and adopted full-throated
support for the cause. He was a latecomer, but
ultimately played a key role in passage of the
bill and of the subsequent ballot measure last
year. Hes now a rumored 2016 presidential as-
pirant (along with Cuomo).
4. Religion. Perhaps the greatest force
opposed to our full equality, organized re-
ligion gets a lot of ink. From the attacks of
Pope Benedict to the reparative therapy
efforts of Scientology, religions (and cults in
the case of Scientology) remain a key threat
to LGBT people. But even thats changing.
If you visit a local Catholic church, youll nd
openly LGBT people in the pews and gay
support groups operating. And they have
something to celebrate with the news this
week that Benedict is stepping down after
nearly eight years of anti-gay pronounce-
ments. More and more religions are mod-
erating their views on our full inclusion in
church life, including in marriage. Evangeli-
cal Lutherans now recognize the same-sex
relationships of church leaders; the U.S.
Episcopal Church allows same-sex marriag-
es in states where its legal. Theres a long
way to go to full acceptance, of course, but
progress is undeniable and change is hap-
pening at a brisk pace.
5. Anderson Cooper & Jodie Foster.
Closeted rich and famous people have
come in for a healthy dose of criticism on
this page over the years. After all, if the
wealthiest and most successful among us
wont come out, how can we expect the
schoolteacher in Alabama or the construc-
tion worker in Iowa to do the same? Cooper
and Foster became the poster children for
the closet but in the last year, both publicly
came out. Better late than never, right? May-
be Shepard Smith and Queen Latifah will
follow their lead.
Even after all that progress, theres still
no shortage of organizations and public g-
ures to take to task think Sam Arora, Rick
Santorum, Tony Perkins and the National
Organization for Marriage. And our work is
far from complete. We need a federal law
outlawing anti-LGBT employment discrimi-
nation; a stop to religion-based bigotry; and
an openly gay professional athlete would be
nice, too. But the list of our enemies is a lot
shorter than it was 10 years ago. Heres to
the next 10 years of progress.

Economy booming with
construction cranes
dotting the city
Mayor Grays State of the District speech
touted how well the city is doing and we are
doing great. The reserve fund is at record lev-
els; the economy is booming with 55 cranes
dotting the citys landscape and ofce build-
ings and apartments going up across the city.
Ground is broken for Skyland Mall in Ward 7
after decades of false starts; the new Coast
Guard headquarters is nearly nished in
Ward 8 on the west campus of the old Saint
Elizabeths site and plans are moving forward
for a high-tech center on the east campus. A
major developer is being sought for the old
Walter Reed campus in Northwest.
For the rst time in years there is hope for
fair agreements with public service unions
and the mayor has proposed an additional
$100 million investment in affordable housing
and a $15 million fund for competitive grants
to small non-prots.
The city is regaining control over agen-
cies that for decades have been under
court order; 1,100 people a month are
moving into the District; and we are making
steady if too slow progress on improving
our schools. These successes appropriately
credited to the Gray administration have
been built on changes to the way we do
business in the District starting in the Wil-
liams administration.
Yet there are still many problems to be
solved. Too many children are in homeless
shelters and there is still too much violent
crime and too many hate crimes. We need
even more affordable housing and must con-
tinue to lower the unemployment rate espe-
cially in the poorer areas of the District.
The successes of the last two years often
get lost in the headlines over the question-
able ethics of some public ofcials. We need
to rebuild the publics condence in the po-
litical system. The mayor has submitted com-
prehensive campaign nance reform legisla-
tion to the Council, which awaits action. The
Council passed an ethics bill and while it may
not have gone far enough it was a start. De-
spite these lingering issues the city is being
run better than it has ever been before.
Meanwhile, the issues surrounding Coun-
cil member Jim Graham have reached a cre-
scendo. The report by the citys Board of Eth-
ics and Government Accountability should
be seen as a shot across the bow for all public
ofcials. We have to demand better. While
the investigation of Council member Gra-
ham will not proceed, the report highlighted
the issues that many thought while not illegal
may have crossed an ethics line.
I disagree with the Washington Post
editorial that called on Graham to resign. If
nothing illegal occurred then it is up to his
constituents, not the Post, to determine his
future. His wheeling and dealing pointed out
that with so few elected ofcials in the Dis-
trict, there will be constant conicts of inter-
est when dealing with constituent requests.
Graham worked on Metro issues and, at the
same time, worked to help a constituent in
his Ward. Jims reputation for horse trading
when his help is sought possibly created its
own problems. Maybe rather than demand-
ing his resignation other ofcials and the
public can learn a valuable lesson from his
current travails.
Maybe we should require Council mem-
bers to post all their contacts and corre-
spondence relating to any city contractor or
potential contractor online within 72 hours of
it having occurred. This transparency would
potentially force our public ofcials to think
twice about what they do or ask for. Legiti-
mate correspondence would still go forward
without a problem. Transparency in govern-
ment is always a good thing and this would
allow people to review and question actions
as they are happening rather than years later.
There is signicant progress be-
ing made on a host of issues in our city.
Polls and surveys show that services are
being delivered more efciently and
faster than ever before. The mayor will
be working with the Council on major
regulatory reform and on a total review
of procurement practices in the District.
One thought is to take the Council out
of the contracting business altogether. As
we build the Districts tax base we will be
able to develop and fund programs for
those most in need the poor, children
and the disabled.
D.C. doing great, despite Grahams issues

Peter Rosenstein is a D.C.-based LGBT rights and
Democratic Party activist. He writes regularly for the Blade.
Tentative rst steps signal
new commitment to
regulatory, tax reform
I believe D.C. can be the most business-
friendly city in the country.
So stated Mayor Vincent Gray last Friday
when launching the citys Business Regulatory
Reform Task Force at local beer manufacturing
startup D.C. Brau Brewing Company.
The cynicism of a skeptic is appropriate
when encountering the words District of
Columbia and business friendly in the
same sentence.
The mayors declaration was welcomed,
however, if only for its rarity in local political
discourse and his sincerity in conveying it. This
regulatory repair effort is among six elements
of the administrations new Five-Year Econom-
ic Development Strategy.
But getting there will be a steep climb.
Given the citys perennial worst-of-the-
worst national designations measuring busi-
ness friendliness and overall enterprise en-
couragement, the 28 voting and 4 non-voting
task force appointees confront a daunting
task requiring the ingenuity of a drag queen
trapped in a Dollar Store. Faith may move
mountains but it will take a miracle of serious
effort to achieve real reform enabling D.C. to
climb out of the cellar on commerce.
The illusion of prudent policy owed the
enterprise opportunities intrinsic to one of
the countrys most concentrated creative
class environs eventually suffers the effects
of unduly encumbered businesses. Long-
term scal strength of a population expand-
ing, economically dynamic and culturally di-
verse national capital is inevitably restricted
by the burdens of excessively high taxation,
reexive regulatory excess and nanny nui-
sance nonsense exacerbated by government
agency dysfunction and distemper.
The construction cranes and other symbols
of development progress of which local politi-
cians gloat have risen mostly in spite of local
policies, not because of them. A political class
accustomed more to disbursement of public
dollars than encouraging private sector suc-
cess is largely clueless about the difference.
Business creation and operation experience
is as rare among city ofcials as is their under-
standing of the challenges to local entrepre-
neurship at their hand.
In his State of the District address earlier last
week, Gray cited the dominant hospitality sec-
tor when describing his regulatory revision ob-
jectives as a major step forward in boost-
ing economic development in ways that are
both familiar as well as groundbreaking for
the District. The task forces mission includes
scouring the Districts rules and regulations
and providing recommendations on how to
make the District an easier place to start and
grow a business and create jobs.
Repairing city rules by identifying exist-
ing laws and regulations that otherwise might
impede the progress of a business with an
instruction to monitor and track current and
future proposals to reform regulations and
identify their potential impact on business is
a tall order in this town.
On another front, the D.C. Tax Revision
Commission chaired by former Mayor An-
thony Williams is preparing comprehensive
recommendations that include making the
Districts tax policy more competitive with
surrounding jurisdictions and to encour-
age business growth and job creation. The
commission is another signal that the city
has become serious about xing its non-
competitive and counterproductive revenue
extraction practices.
As nancial necessity compels the D.C.
Council to wrestle with becoming more
growth-oriented and development-conscious
even business-friendly in December city
legislators nally began reforming alcohol-
licensing regulations affecting the citys hospi-
tality industry. A rst whack at the easiest tar-
gets restored a small dose of commonsense
to the process, mitigating the outsized abil-
ity of neighborhood advisory and other small
groups to intercede against popular commu-
nity business initiation.
These nascent regulatory corrections rein
in the power of such groups, reducing by half
the typical approval schedule for new bars and
restaurants encountering license protests. The
resulting expedited adjudication timeframe
of approximately seven months from start to
nish is still too long, but is a critical improve-
ment nonetheless. The Gay and Lesbian Ac-
tivists Alliance (GLAA) recently released an
updated policy brief and questionnaire on
which to base the organizations coveted D.C.
candidate ratings, joining others calling for ad-
ditional reforms in this regulatory domain.
From tax and regulatory obstacles to the
inequities of out-of-balance business licens-
ing procedures, it remains to be seen whether
city ofcials are committed to, and capable of,
reversing an entrenched anti-business culture.
At least there is growing optimism that, at
long last, they will try.
D.C.s steep climb to becoming business-friendly

75 years after Broadway
debut, Wilders iconic
play is back
Until recently, I thought of Thornton Wilder
as a famous, but avuncular American play-
wright and novelist and of his Pulitzer Prize
winning play Our Town as an iconic, but
comfy play. I knew it is performed almost daily
in high schools and community theaters, and
Id read it as a teen. Id have seen it if little else
was playing, but, while nourishing, it seemed
as surprising as innovative to me as mac
and cheese. My thinking changed dramati-
cally after I saw the 75th anniversary produc-
tion of Our Town playing at Fords Theatre
through Feb. 24.
Why did I want to see Fords production of
Our Town? Because in the wake of the 75th
anniversary of the opening of Our Town on
Broadway, Wilder is the talk of the town. A
production of Wilders play The Skin of Our
Teeth will be presented Feb. 14-16 at the Har-
old and Sylvia Theatre at American University
and a new bio of Wilder Thornton Wilder: A
Life by Penelope Niven is just out. I wanted
to take a fresh look at Wilders life and his re-
nowned play.
Wilder, who lived from 1897 to 1975, was of
a generation that was often closeted about its
sexuality. Known for his intellect, Wilder spent
most of his life with his work and his friends
(which ran the gamut from Gertrude Stein to
boxing champion Gene Tunney) rather than
in relationships. ... Art is not only the desire
to tell ones secret; it is the desire to tell it and
hide it at the same time, Wilder wrote.
Still, even with the limitations of biographi-
cal gaydar, it seems as if Wilder likely was
queer. Growing up, his father was concerned
about Wilders peculiar gait and certain ef-
feminate ways. In her splendid biography,
Niven says, a case can be made that Wilder
was bisexual.
The story of Our Town is known
from Peoria to San Francisco to Tokyo. Set in
the ctional New Hampshire small town of
Grovers Corners from 1901 to 1914, Wilders
play not only illuminates daily life (from falling
in love to marrying to dying) in a particular time
in America, but opens our eyes to the inter-
connectivity of human beings and to the need
to embrace life in the face of our mortality. Us-
ing deceptively simple language, Our Town,
when staged well, stops us in our tracks. As we
hear the Stage Managers narration and watch
George and Emily love, marry and deal with
death in the early 20th century, in the 21st cen-
tury, we come face-to-face with the transience
and timelessness of life.
Fords production of Our Town, featuring
a racially diverse cast, is poignant and engag-
ing. The companys lively staging, which used
the minimalist staging Wilder had wanted for
the play, removed the mothballs that too often
encase Our Town. By plays end, I found my-
self asking with Emily, Do any human beings
ever realize life while they live it?
Im always interested in reexamining clas-
sics, Stephen Rayne, the director of Fords
production of Our Town, said in a telephone
interview. When Wilder wrote the play, he
saw himself as being in the forefront of the
modernist tradition. He had become dissatis-
ed with theater on Broadway at the time.
Wilder felt that theater wasnt making any
demand on the public, Rayne said. With Our
Town, Wilder was hoping to get back to the
purity of form that the Greek dramas had, he
added. He wanted to make audiences use
their imagination. Wilder wrote about falling
in love, marrying and death human moments
for everybody, so that we would become more
present while were alive.
Now that same-sex marriage is becoming a
reality, it would be great to see a production of
Our Town featuring LGBT characters. Until
then, check out Wilders play, which transcends
differences in class, culture, sexual orientation
and race. Itll make you feel more alive.
Now that same-sex marriage is becoming a reality,
it would be great to see a production of
Our Town featuring LGBT characters.

Watching gay porn at William Leaps
house near American University in
Washington can be tedious.
Theres a lot of hilarity with that, Leap
says. My partner always wants to race
through it. He says, Oh, come on, this is
stupid, and Im like, No, I need to listen to
this. I want to hear the dialogue and really
think about what phrases theyre saying.
And yes, in a way, Leap does have a
dialogue fetish but its not sexual. Hes
a linguistics specialist and professor
at American University in its College
of Arts and Sciences Department of
Anthropology. His 20th annual Lavender
Languages & Linguistics Conference,
which he says is the longest-running
queer academic conference in North
America, convenes today. He and a
stable of other academics will welcome
about 150 attendees from around the
world to a weekend jammed with about
80 presentations on queer language.
Language used in gay porn is just one of
the many topics that will be covered.
We have a guy coming, and this is such
a hoot, Leap says with palpable glee,
whos doing a presentation comparing
the sounds guys make in coital ecstasy with
the sounds animals make in the zoo and
in the wild. Hes actually doing a phonetic
technical analysis and comparison to see
how, for instance, [gay porn star] Damien
Crosse grunts, so I dont know, well see
what he comes up with.
But even with nods to porn and gay
pop culture, isnt the conference a bit on
the geeky and dry side? Leap says no and
that the use of language from the way
words are spoken to the origins of phrases
and expressions has a profound effect
on LGBT lives. Yes, its his pet passion,
but he says theres something any queer
person could nd useful in the event.
I think the real value in it is that
it reminds us that gay is not a single
phenomenon and no one owns it, Leap
says. No one has a right to stand up
and speak for all queer people and part
of what we have to do as academics is
make it clear that theres this vast diversity
of things associated with the use of
language. Gays and lesbians have a rich
history that has largely been ignored.
These cultural experiences are not being
talked about in textbooks.
Leap started the event in 1993 with a half-
day event and about 85 in attendance. Now
its three days and he expects about 150 to
register in addition to walk ins who come
for a session or two. Its a non-prot event
and Leap says those who are interested
but cant pay will not be turned away or
denied lunch/refreshments. He also says
theres a refreshing non-snob factor with the
professors whom he encourages to mingle
with attendees from all walks of life.
Theres no attitude here, no prima
donnas, he says. We really want an
environment where everybody is free to
talk to everybody.
David Peterson, a gay associate
professor in the Department of English at
the University of Nebraska at Omaha, has
been attending and presenting almost
every year since 1995. He says the topics
that have been explored over the years at
the Conference have endless real world
implications for LGBT people.
If we want to counter the kinds of
things the Family Research Council, for
example, is doing, we have to have some
understanding of what theyre doing
or it wont be effective, he says. We
cant just protest it and say, Theyre just
fundamentalist Bible thumpers, because
theyre really not. Its quite interesting, and
not what many people would expect, that
they dont use a lot of scripture quoting on
their website and in their arguments.
Theres been a shift. One of the things they
do is pretend to be social scientists saying
very homophobic things in what appears to
be the objective language of science.
Leap is happy to go anywhere during
a phone chat this week. During an hour-
plus conversation, he touched on dozens
of topics. Among them:
On understanding bow gay Ianguage
bas cbanged in 20 years: One of the
most important things weve learned is
that 20 years ago, many folks thought there
was a gay language, a gay way of talking
where you could identify a particular accent
or a single way of doing things and while
theres probably some truth to that, what
were realizing now is its terribly complex.
There is no single way of talking, there is
no such thing as a gay accent and it really
varies across different groups, segments,
classes and cultures. You try to translate
a phrase like coming out of the closet
into French, for example, and their reaction
would be, Why would I be in a wardrobe?
If theyre actually talking about telling
family and friends theyre gay, they would
say it in an altogether different way and
thats just one example. Referring to the
gayborhood, is another that just has no
French equivalent. And thats just using
French as an example. You can imagine
how this varies around the world.
Is faggot tbe new "n word"? Well,
yes and no, Leap says. A lot of guys use it
as a term of self reference but get very angry
if somebody else says it about them, so for
many it is. Its kind of like the high school
expression, Thats so gay, which is widely
used as a bullying term. I dont think this
needs a whole lot of theorizing. Its like queer
was 20 years ago. We kind of took it back,
made a joke of it and said, You dont own this
term. We can do that with fag if we want.
Norman Lear couId bave Arcbie
unker say fag on a sitcom 30 years ago
but now ceIebrities wbo use tbe word
get criticized and not just by GLAAD.
Wbat does tbat say about bow Ianguage
usage bas cbanged? Its good because
it keeps our issues on the front burner,
Leap says. Yes, things have come a long
way, but I still worry until we have some
serious workplace protections in place.
All these things we can do to keep that
visibility going are good.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN OUT AND WHO WAS
THE HARDEST PERSON TO TELL?
Ive been out since I was 18 years old. I was most
afraid to tell my father, because I have a much older
brother who is also gay and my father almost never
talked about him. About seven months into being out,
I mentioned to my dad in a nonchalant way that I went
out with a girl I was dating at the time. He asked me
why I never told him that I was interested in women,
and I replied that I was afraid. He told me that he loved
me, already knew and it didnt matter. Twelve years
later, he and my mother continue to be my biggest
supporters.
WHOS YOUR LGBT HERO?
I really like both Ellen and Rosie ODonnell. Both
of these women live or have lived their lives in front
of cameras and are fully honest about their lives and
marriages to women, yet continue to be successful
individuals in the entertainment industry.
WHATS WASHINGTONS BEST NIGHTSPOT, PAST
OR PRESENT?
Ill never forget my rst visit to a gay club in D.C., the
Hung Jury. It was a week after my 18th birthday and
I had never danced with a woman before. Although
I wouldnt vote this club to be the best (more like
a hole in the wall), I was certainly thankful that a club
existed for 18 year olds to go and party with other
women, as I had never experienced that and needed
it. Venues for the underage crowd no longer exist!
Fast forward to modern day D.C., and I absolutely love
what womens events Im a part of, especially any LURe
event. We recently celebrated our four-year anniversary
at Cobalt and Ive got nothing but love for that venue!
DESCRIBE YOUR DREAM WEDDING.
I already had it right here in Baltimore on Oct. 12,
2012 at Cylburn Arboretum. We were surrounded by
125 friends and family, our parents walked down the
aisle with us, the weather was perfect and everything
went as planned! The icing on the cake? Not wanting
to wait to see if Maryland passed marriage equality, we
made our marriage ofcial in D.C. a week prior, which
requires a D.C. address on your certicate. Instead of
having it done at the courthouse, a good friend of mine
who is an ofciant in the D.C. area married us at our
favorite coffee shop, Starbucks on 14th Street!
WHAT NON-LGBT ISSUE ARE YOU MOST
PASSIONATE ABOUT?
I am very passionate about working with individuals
with special needs especially those who are in the
process of exiting the school system and preparing for
the transition into adulthood.
WHAT HISTORICAL OUTCOME WOULD YOU
CHANGE?
I would bring back some of our most iconic gures
who were lost too soon. There were too many people
who were wise beyond their years and taken away from
us. Martin Luther King Jr., John F. Kennedy, etc.
WHATS BEEN THE MOST MEMORABLE POP
CULTURE MOMENT OF YOUR LIFETIME?
Boy bands and the fact that I still love them. But Im
talking NSYNC, 98 degrees, and the Backstreet Boys. I
know all the words and Im not even ashamed! Losing
Michael Jackson was also really tough.
ON WHAT DO YOU INSIST?
Honesty, loyalty, integrity, laughter and a lack of
overall B.S.
WHAT WAS YOUR LAST FACEBOOK POST OR
TWEET?
Whyyyy do I always need the bathroom in an
emergency fashion after leaving work?
IF YOUR LIFE WERE A BOOK, WHAT WOULD THE
TITLE BE?
Dear Rosie, When Do You Sleep?
IF SCIENCE DISCOVERED A WAY TO CHANGE
SEXUAL ORIENTATION, WHAT WOULD YOU DO?
Id probably change the channel. I like being me, and
I wouldnt be who and where I am today without the
fact that Im a woman who loves women.
WHAT DO YOU BELIEVE IN BEYOND THE PHYSICAL
WORLD?
Im a non-church attending Christian, who has had
plenty of personal proof that God is looking out for us.
Im far from a Bible thumper and would never try to
sway even one person to believe what I do. With that
said, Im sure there is a DJ booth in the sky with my
name on it whenever its that time.
WHATS YOUR ADVICE FOR LGBT MOVEMENT
LEADERS?
Always remember to give back to the community that
supports you and be grateful. None of us got where we
are without support from someone.
WHAT WOULD YOU WALK ACROSS HOT COALS
FOR?
My wife Kris, my kids and my parents.
WHAT LGBT STEREOTYPE ANNOYS YOU MOST?
That there has to be a guy and a girl or rigid
gender roles in every same-sex relationship. People
assume that Im the guy because I despise dresses
and dont do makeup. You know what they say about
assuming right?
WHATS YOUR FAVORITE LGBT MOVIE?
I havent watched any LGBT movies in ages, but
my coming out movie was denitely But Im a
Cheerleader.
WHATS THE MOST OVERRATED SOCIAL CUSTOM?
Valentines Day! Totally a waste of money. You should
show your signicant other love every day of the year.
WHAT TROPHY OR PRIZE DO YOU MOST COVET?
Winning Best DJ in the 2012 Washington Blade Best
of Gay D.C. was pretty amazing for me. It felt like my
last 11 years of working hard to entertain the LGBT
community nally paid off! Id also say my two college
degrees feel pretty good.
WHAT DO YOU WISH YOUD KNOWN AT 18?
That 90 percent of the people I stressed about being
my friend/dating me/ spending time with me at that
time would only lead me to bigger and better things,
and that its OK to lose some people along the way.
The 10 percent who are still here (and you know who
you are) are so very special to me and Im always going
to be thankful for that. Your social world at that time
means so much to you, but as you get older and more
focused, you see whats truly important.
WHY WASHINGTON?
I love the people, the culture and diversity, the
energy and the nightlife. Its the city that loves you back!
Thank you D.C. for all the years weve shared, and heres
to many more!

Sleep experts say some people just need
less sleep than others. DJ Rosie Hicks must be
one of those her toughest night is Thursday
when she does hip-hop night at Club Hippo in
Baltimore until 2 a.m., then has to be at work
at 7:30 a.m. teaching special ed at one of the
Kennedy Krieger schools.
For years she DJed on both Thursday and
Friday nights but only does one Friday night a
month now.
I dont know, I just do it, she says. Im used
to it at this point. Im fortunate I love both my
jobs so I just go into it knowing Im going to be
a little more tired on Fridays.
Hicks started spinning at Gallaghers, a former
womens bar in Baltimore about 12 years ago.
She was there one night when the manager
red the DJ and told the patrons they would
have to provide their own music that night.
I got hired that night, Hicks says. By the
end of the night, all my friends were calling me
DJ Rosie. I had never DJed a day in my life.
And she never stopped in addition to
her Hippo gig, she also has monthly nights at
Cobalt (shes spun for LURe since it started) and
Phase 1 of Dupont in Washington. She also does
weddings, parties and private events. Listen for
her at the Her HRC event Sunday from 6-11
p.m. upstairs at Town (2009 8th St., N.W.). Her
set is at 10 p.m. Shell face off with lesbian DJs
from Philadelphia, Boston and Washington.
Tickets are available at the door or online. The
event has its own page at hrc.org.
Hicks, who spins a mix of hip-hop, R&B, pop
and more depending on the event, says she just
all-around loves music.
I love making people happy out there, the
30-year-old Baltimore native says. The whole
point of coming out to a bar or club to hear a DJ
is to let go of worries and cares and enjoy it.
Hicks has lived in Baltimore her whole life
except for a brief stint in Cincinnati in 2007.
She lives in Hamilton, the same East Baltimore
neighborhood in which she grew up. She and
long-time partner Kris got married after ve
years together last fall. Together theyre raising
daughters Khenna, 8, and Jaidenne, 11 (Kriss
from a previous marriage).
In her free time, Hicks enjoys coaching her
daughters soccer team, sports, watching the
Ravens and, of course, DJing.

Two current Signature
productions nd
illumination in the dark
By PATRICK FOLLIARD
Its not a bong or porn. The contraband
hidden beneath the dorm oorboards in
this Catholic boys prep school is a nicely
bound copy of Shakespeares Romeo
and Juliet. In a repressed world where
every movement is dictated by a bells toll
and days are lled with rote recitations of
Latin verb conjugations and catechism,
it seems escaping into the play is the
thing. So, each night after lights out, four
teenage boys whip out their ashlights
and energetically act out the bards torrid
tale of star-crossed young lovers.
Shakespeares R&J now playing at
Signature Theatre, is a play within a play
both a male adolescent coming of age
story and an edited version of the classic.
Like the horny teenagers in the original
text, the heat between R&Js Romeo,
the poetically ardent Student 1 (Alex
Mills) and his determined Juliet, Student
2 (Jefferson Farber) is real. The lovers
recognition of attraction denitely
the plays most powerful moment is
followed by plenty of kisses and contact.
Effectively divvying up the remainder
of the parts are Student 3 (Joel David
Santner) and Student 4 (Rex Daugherty)
who is particularly uncomfortable with his
schoolmates raging same-sex romance
and does what he can to stop it.
Staged by R&Js author Joe Calarco
(who is gay), the production (Signatures
rst-ever in the round) is beautiful to watch.
Impeccably rehearsed, the appealingly
boyish cast moves nonstop with manic
energy and teenage boy horseplay, while
never missing a cue or bit of business.
James Kronzers impressively spare-yet-
rich wood set is gorgeously lit by Chris
Lee who slyly creates Veronas romantic
lattices, shadows and misty rain showers
without a drop of water.
As the four students become increasingly
involved in the play, they shed their
jackets, ties, sweater vests and inhibitions,
taking their bodies and emotions far away
from their stultifyingly structured days.
And when they reach the end of the of
Shakespeares beloved tragedy, will they
return lockstep to a buttoned-down life
of bells and indoctrination? Or will each
choose his own way?
Though entirely unsubtle, R&Js
ending is undeniably afrming.
If youre into farce, theres a humdinger
titled Black Comedy running
concurrently next door in Signatures
more intimate ARK Theatre. Mounted by
No Rules Theatre Company, the spirited
production marks the beginning of an
enviable three-year residency at Signature
for the young company.
Penned by British playwright Peter
Shaffer, the 1966 romp takes place
mostly in the dark. Up-and-coming artist
Brindsley (Jerzy Gwiazdowski) and his
facile but connected girlfriend Carol
(Kathryn Saffell) are planning a special
gathering in which Brindsley will both
meet Carols very conservative father
Colonel Melkett (Matthew R. Wilson) and
show his sculptures to a rich German art
collector. But all goes wrong when the
buildings main fuse blows leaving the
hosts and their guests in total darkness.
In the playwrights brilliantly reversed
conceit, the stage is illuminated when the
lights are out, and is darkened when the
lights are meant to be on, allowing us to
see the awkwardness and hilarity of an
evening spent without light.

Even relationship-
inclined people must
have contentment alone
before having anything to
offer a signicant other
DEAR MICHAEL,
I love my boyfriend Alan more than
anything. If it were up to me I would spend
all our free time together I feel safe and
happy when Im with him. But Im afraid
Im pushing him away. He tells me that
he feels smothered a lot of the time and
I dont know what I can do to change this.
I am always careful not to push myself on
him too much, because he makes it clear
that he likes his space. I usually let him be
the one to make plans. But somehow he is
picking up on my vibe and tells me that I
seem needy.
I suppose I am needy I hate being
alone. Growing up I was an outcast and
I was so relieved when I met my rst
boyfriend in freshman year of college. We
were together for six years and when he
broke up with me, I was miserable. I hated
being alone again and went on a lot of
rst dates looking for Mr. Right. When
Alan came along, it seemed too good to
be true. We have so much in common and
were really attracted to each other. Lately,
sex is falling off a lot as I feel he is pushing
me away. Im so scared of being alone
again and would do anything to make this
work. Do you have any pointers for what
I can do to avoid losing this relationship?
MICHAEL REPLIES:
Alan is somehow picking up on an issue
that you will be very well served to tackle.
When you look to another person to be
your main source of safety and happiness,
you are putting yourself in a very shaky
position. There is no guarantee that the
other person will always be there. Even if
he does stay, its inevitable that at some
point he will not want to play this role.
That is what is happening in your
relationship now. You believe that you
need to be with Alan to feel OK, and not
coincidentally, Alan wants distance. As long
as you believe that you need Alan, you will
remain scared. And you will continue to put
a lot of excess weight on the relationship,
wanting Alan to hold you up.
You ask for pointers to avoid losing this
relationship. I understand how important
it is for you not to be alone, but the most
important point to focus on is shifting the
foundation of your well being from Alan
to yourself. If you can develop the ability
to tolerate standing on your own and
ultimately enjoy the strength of doing so,
you may build a resilient relationship with
Alan. Even if you and Alan part, you will
be in a better position to be in a future
relationship, because a stronger partner
makes for a stronger relationship. Most
important, if you can learn to provide
yourself with a sense of well-being rather
than looking to another person, you will be
a far more solid and secure guy. If you dont
work on this issue, you will continue to be
on shaky ground in your relationships.
Are you wondering how to become a
more independent, stable man? You might
start spending some time on your own,
and with people other than Alan, pursuing
things that give you enjoyment, fulllment
and a sense of well-being. Doing so will
help you to start constructing a self that
can stand alone, separate from the self
that is all wrapped up with Alan, and will
reduce the pressure that you are putting
on your relationship.
Keep in mind that when you try new
behaviors, it is normal to feel scared and
anxious. When this happens (and it will),
make the conscious decision to calm
yourself rather than letting your feelings
overwhelm you. You might talk back to
your fear, reassuring yourself that you will
get though the experience and grow from
it. Or, you might meditate: simply focusing
your attention on breathing in and out,
gently bringing your attention back to your
breathing whenever your mind wanders to
fearful or anxious thoughts, is a great way
to build your ability to tolerate discomfort.
Of course, this isnt only about you.
Im sure that Alan has his own issues
that inuence how he handles closeness
and distance. Nonetheless, theres much
useful work to do on your side. A lifetime
of experiences have led you to fear being
alone and you havent yet worked at
standing on your own. Alans unhappiness
is giving you the opportunity to become
a much stronger person. Good luck, and
please remember that you can achieve big
changes with time and consistent effort.

Renegades have squads
for competitive and
recreational rugby
By KEVIN MAJOROS
Washington is home to the Washington
Renegades, a Division III rugby union
football club. They are members of the
Potomac Rugby Union and USA Rugby.
Established in 1998 by Mark Hertzog, the
Renegades were the rst mens rugby club
in the United States to actively recruit gay
men and men of color. Its mission is to learn,
teach and play rugby along with forging
new friendships, celebrating differences
and giving back to the community.
The current member base of the
Renegades (dcrugby.com) is around 45
players with an age range from 20s to
50s. Members have two seasons and the
group is divided into two squads.
The fall season runs from August to
November and consists of league matches
within the Potomac Rugby Union. The
Reds squad is their developmental team
and plays matches within the league on an
exhibition basis.
The Blues squad is the competitive squad
whose players compete for a chance to
advance from the Potomac Rugby Union to the
regional championships within the Mid Atlantic
Rugby Union. From there, winners can advance
to the USA Rugby national championships
which are contested in May each year.
The spring season consists of friendly
matches within the International Gay Rugby
Association and Board. This group sponsors
the Bingham Cup which is held every two
years and is named for Mark Bingham.
Bingham was a former Association rugby
player from California and a passenger on
the 9-11 United Airlines Flight 93 which
crashed near Shanksville, Pa., as those
aboard tried to take control of the aircraft
from the hijackers. Many experts believe
the aircraft was headed for impact at the
Capitol Building or the White House.
The Renegades feel a special
connection with Bingham who had
participated in tournaments that they
had hosted in D.C. They have competed
in every Bingham Cup since its inception
with the next tournament being held in
Sydney, Australia in 2014.
The Renegades frequently travel and
have played tournaments in such varied
places as New York, Dublin, Charlotte,
San Francisco and Manchester. The
Renegades Reds squad is the two time
defending champions of Hellfest in Dallas.
There is a false stereotype in the sport
of Rugby, says Renegades President Ned
Kieloch. Most people believe that all rugby
players are big and burly. The best teams
consist of players of all shapes and sizes.
The Renegades do their recruiting of
various sized players through events at
sports bars and gyms as well as through
Team D.C.s Sportsfest.
To groom new players, the Renegades
offer Rugby 101 clinics, skills clinics and one-
on-one coaching to develop player skills.
Some of the rookies we have recruited
have gone on to become real contributors
on our competitive squads, Kieloch says.
The Renegades have a long and varied
history of giving back to the community.
In past years they have been involved in
things such as toy drives, food drives, 9-11
fundraisers and skills clinics for kids.
The mix of straight and gay players
on the Renegades squad has resulted
in our straight players being wonderful
advocates for the LGBT community,
Kieloch says. Together, we build bridges.
The spring season for the Renegades
will kick off with practice at Cardozo High
School on Tuesday.
The rst tournament of the season will
be on March 23 in New York City as they
compete in the Four Leaf 15s Tournament.
The event will draw about 1,500 players
from overseas and domestically.
