There have been 7 piers constructed on the Redondo Beach shoreline over the years. Between
1889 and 1903, three piers were constructed to service freight activity when Redondo Beach
was competing against the San Pedro harbor for dominance. Wharf 1 was constructed at
Emerald Street in 1889, Wharf 2 was built in 1895 just south in front of the Hotel Redondo, and
Wharf 3 was built south of Wharf 2 near Sapphire and Topaz Streets in 1903. The Sante Fe
railroad provided rail service to the piers. Violent storms in 1915 and 1919 destroyed Wharfs 1
and 2, and diminishing freight deliveries led to the removal of Wharf 3 in 1926.
In 1916, a municipal pier referred to as the “endless pier” was constructed in a “V” shape to
replace the destroyed Wharf 1. A 450-foot long northern leg began at the former location
of the old Wharf No. 1. At the western end of the northerly leg stood a 160-foot x 200-foot
platform. From this platform, the Pier headed back to shore just south of the Bathhouse on the
450-foot southern leg. In November 1925 Captain Hans C. Monstad constructed a pier adjacent
to the endless pier to provide landings for all fshing boats and pleasure crafts operating in
Redondo Beach, including the gambling ship “The Rex”. By 1938, the pier had been extended
to 450 feet. The 1919 storm that destroyed Wharf 2 severely damaged the endless pier, and
ultimately the pier was demolished in 1928 and a new wooden horseshoe shaped pier was
constructed in 1929. By connecting the west end of the Monstad Pier with the center of the
Horseshoe Pier in 1983, the Fishing Promenade provided more space for sport fshing.
January 1988 storms battered the Pier, and destroyed the Fishing Promenade. In May 1988,
fre destroyed most of the Horseshoe Pier. After many years of public debate about the
future of the Pier, the reconstructed concrete Redondo Pier opened in 1995. Architect
Edward Beall designed shade structures that symbolize the sails and masts of the old sailing
ships that visited Redondo. The new Pier connected the 1925 Monstad Pier, the remainder
of the 1929 Pier, and the location of the 1889 Wharf No. 1.

In 2012, the Redondo Landing building at the entrance to the pier was renovated. The
city has recently acquired the Pier Plaza and International Boardwalk leaseholds in King
Harbor, and now owns a 15-acre stretch of property from Torrance Boulevard to Portofno
Way. In January 2013, the city entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with El
Segundo’s CenterCal Properties to redevelop the 15 acres of city-owned land on the
Redondo Beach waterfront, including the Redondo Beach Pier. The project is expected
to take several years and cost between $150 and 200 million. The City and the developer
are continuing to hold
public meetings to
receive public input as
to the future design.
Ground breaking is not
expected to occur until
at least 2015.

future of the Pier, the reconstructed concrete Redondo Pier opened in 1995. Architect
Edward Beall designed shade structures that symbolize the sails and masts of the old sailing
ships that visited Redondo. The new Pier connected the 1925 Monstad Pier, the remainder
of the 1929 Pier, and the location of the 1889 Wharf No. 1.

In 2012, the Redondo Landing building at the entrance to the pier was renovated. The
city has recently acquired the Pier Plaza and International Boardwalk leaseholds in King
Harbor, and now owns a 15-acre stretch of property from Torrance Boulevard to Portofno
Way. In January 2013, the city entered into an exclusive negotiating agreement with El
Segundo’s CenterCal Properties to redevelop the 15 acres of city-owned land on the
Redondo Beach waterfront, including the Redondo Beach Pier. The project is expected
to take several years and cost between $150 and 200 million. The City and the developer
are continuing to hold
public meetings to
receive public input as
to the future design.
Ground breaking is not
expected to occur until
at least 2015.

The Most Expensive U.S. Home Sale, Ever!
The most expensive home ever put on the market in the United States (in Silicon Valley, Northern California) was just sold for $117.5
million, possibly to the CEO of Softbank, Masayoshi Son, in November, 2012!
Friedman, Fleischer and Lowe of San Francisco handled the exchange of the 9-acre property, which includes a 9,000-square foot
residence with a very large pool-house, several detached buildings (like a library and guest quarters) plus (of course) tennis courts,
swimming pools, and amazing gardens situated on The Mountain Road in an exclusive, upscale neighborhood.
Most incredible is that in 1997, the same property sold for only 8 million dollars! This was, of course, before the massive renovation and
construction by Greenberg. However, the enormous appreciation of value can’t be ignored. There are other $80-90 million properties
scattered around the United States (particularly in Manhattan, NY and Florida), but only the recent listing of the Broken O Ranch in
Montana tops the 117 Mountain Road property (it was listed at $135 Million, but there is no indication that it sold for that price).

As a kid growing up in the suburbs of Detroit, designer Gaurav Nanda constantly
found himself doing anything to stay busy. Whether that meant building, joining or
bending something, Nanda’s hands were always moving. It was these activities that
got his creative juices fowing and eventually helped him and his familyfound Bend
Seating two years ago in Los Angeles.
“Those early creative impulses were instrumental in my professional life as a
sculptor, designer and entrepreneur,” Nanda said. “My daily activities ranged from
constructing a teepee to painting with oils, or throwing pots. Eventually, I learned
how to make a living off of what I love.”
Taking two years to develop his line of chairs and other furniture, Nanda found
inspiration in 1950’s sculptor Harry Bertoia’s metal rod chairs; it was his goal to
update the concept and offer something edgier.
Nanda has designed fve different chairs for his most recent collection including
dining chairs, lounge chairs and bar stool chairs. He’s also designed a multipurpose
drum seat along with geometric animal heads and reclaimed wood tables and shelves.
“It is a culmination of my experiences, interests and inspirations over the years
that directly infuence the collection, and this clear connection makes the company
unique,” Nanda said. “We pay attention to detail. For example, the weight of the
chair is important to us. Too heavy, and the customer will feel uncomfortable
touching and moving it. Too light, the customer will feel uncomfortable sitting in it.”
Trying to strike that fne balance, Bend uses galvanized iron for its chairs
because of its fexibility in creating interesting shapes and patterns. However, the
company is getting ready to introduce new materials into production. Right now,
the chairs come in three different colors (orange, peacock teal, white) and range in
price from $450-$495 per chair.
Manufacturing each chair involves a handcrafted method of shaping and spot
welding, a process Nanda refers to as ‘bending’. Each bend is arranged to ensure
structural strength, while the angles of the back, the curves of the seat, and the
closeness of the wires are designed to encourage relaxation and utility.
“We want people to feel comfortable when they sit in our chairs and recognize
them as timeless, quality pieces,” Nanda said. “Over and over we hear surprise from
our customers who sit in our wire chairs and realize how comfortable they really
are. The chairs have an unexpected strength and rigidity despite their composition
of mainly air. They are inviting and enhance any space.”
Getting interest in his designs from across the globe, Nanda’s collection is
available at 15 different stores throughout California and six other states. Customers
can even buy Bend’s furniture at stores in Australia, Canada, Lebanon, Mexico and
Singapore, as well as online.
“We are spending some time evaluating our branding and invigorating it with a
new life,” Nanda said. “It is exciting to see our ideas evolve and where we want our
story to go. We launch new products throughout the year and hope to continue to
make timeless, quality pieces.”

How did you get involved in the restaurant business?
Cris Bennett: I grew up in Woodland Hills, and I really
wanted to buy a car when I turned 16. I convinced
my parents to ask this Mexican restaurant in our
neighborhood if I could bus tables one night a week
and I immediately fell in love with it. I fell in love with
the vibe, the business, the fact that each Saturday was
a little different. I thought I was going to be a dentist
and then I decided to be in the restaurant business.
I worked in restaurants throughout college
and then in Beverly Hills after I graduated. After
that restaurant was sold, I got transferred down to
the South Bay and started working at the Criterion.
After that, things fell into place and I opened my frst
restaurant in 1979. I found a tiny shack of a burger
stand in West L.A. and turned it into Good Stuff.
How did you come up with the name ‘Good Stuff’?
CB: We ran through a bunch of names and stumbled
upon the name after Good Stuff Bakery. We thought
that would make a great name for a restaurant, so we
asked the bakery owner if we could use the name and
he said yes. So, we got the name, trademarked it, and
have had the name ever since.
Why has Good Stuff been such a ‘good’ ft for the
South Bay?
CB: We have been really involved in the community,
which has helped us a lot. Supporting local
charities, functions, sports teams and schools, I
think that has helped blend us into the fabric of
the community. People really support people that
really support the community.
How is Good Stuff involved in the community?
CB: We do a lot of things to support the local
schools through athletics and academics, including
scholarships and work and mentoring programs. I
also take part at career days at different schools in the
area, so the kids get a sense of what the restaurant
business is like. We have a list of people that we help,
but I usually like to go out and do it myself if I can, to
really be the face of the restaurant.
Is it important for you to consistently be at the
different restaurant locations?
CB: I never wanted to get so big where I couldn’t be
at the restaurants. I didn’t want to be in some offce
somewhere negotiating prices for hamburger patties.
I really wanted to stay involved so everyone knows
who I am. I try to have a relationship with the 150
people on our team.
How much do you enjoy what you do and how much
have your 16-year-old expectations been fulflled?
CB: I’ve had long 13-hour days, others where I’ve
come home and cried on the kitchen foor, but it isn’t
like that anymore. I love what I do. It wasn’t easy in
the beginning, working weekends and late nights.
Now luckily, I’m home by 5 p.m. and try to have most
weekends off.
How has the restaurant evolved since you frst opened?
CB: We have always had the mentality to be on the
healthier side and to try to make sure that we are
serving as healthy a product as we can. We want people
to have that option, but also have people be able to get
a burger and fries. We are sort of a California coffee
shop. It works really well, especially by the beach.
How did you come up with the menu for Good Stuff
and what are some of the most popular menu items?
CB: A lot of the recipes I have come up with myself.
I’ll think of the idea or we’ll be using products that
can be used in multiple ways. One of the menu items
that evolved that way was the ground turkey, grilled
veggie and brown rice tostada, which is extremely
popular. Cris’ breakfast salad was my idea, which sort
of has a cult following and is a favorite of people. The
zucchini parmesan has also been on since day one. It
is probably our key item. It is what we are known for.
We make it fresh every day.
I’ll also give my cooks a lot of freedom with the
specials board, where we’ll test out different items,
like the chicken lime soup. Some of them sell well and
others not as much. The worst thing you can do is
have to throw things away.
What are some of the craziest stories from the
restaurants?
CB: I had a friend who was an actor and screenwriter
who once called me up in Hermosa asking if I was
at the restaurant. He wanted to make sure that I
would be there if he brought a few guys down and
that it wasn’t very crowded. It was a nice day and he
brought John Travolta and Nicolas Cage down (and
this is when they were pretty young). They came in,
had lunch right by the window and then walked out
on the strand after. It was really classic.
One time a movie called Men at Work with
Emilio Estevez and Charlie Sheen flmed a scene at
the Hermosa restaurant in which they had breakfast.
I couldn’t believe a movie was flmed there. That was
really fun. Janet Jackson also would come into the
restaurant in Redondo Beach and sit in the corner
with a Good Stuff sweatshirt and a few bodyguards.
She always kept to herself, but was always nice to the
servers the more she came in.
Have your goals for what you wanted Good Stuff to
be been fulflled?
CB: If you would have asked me 35 years ago what
kind of restaurant I would have owned, I had no idea.
I just knew that I wanted to be in the restaurant
business and open a restaurant. I think it really was
decided early when I got a job at the Criterion. It was
very similar to the restaurant I am running now.
I was such a valley boy and would occasionally
go to Malibu, but coming down here, I realized
that I was in heaven. The frst day I went down to
Manhattan Beach, I wore a Hawaiian shirt to ft in,
thinking I was so cool. I came down here and thought
it was paradise.
I’ve had people talk to me about opening more
restaurants across the country, but I just want to enjoy
my life here in this community and the restaurants
we do own. I have four restaurants, they do well. I’m
able to spend time with my kids, play golf and go
on vacation. I really love coming to work and getting
that instant gratifcation from customers when they
enjoy a meal.

There is no question that the tides have turned and the real
estate crash of 2008 appears to have ended. At Kaminsky
Real Estate Group the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the
New Year with old and new clients calling to say they’re ready
to invest in real estate. Is it time again?
THEN: Remember the mid 2000’s: investors stood in
line for 3 days to buy a home, paid $600,000 and sold it the
next day for $750,000. Easy money! Ask all of those savvy
investors that were holding those homes when the market
crashed. We saw developers that were “all-in” using their
profts to buy land and build new homes lose it all. 2008 was
ugly, yet there were survivors and plenty of lessons learned
both from those who lost and those who gained.
NOW: When it comes to investing, in my opinion, there
is only one guru who seems to be right so far, no, not Ed
Kaminsky, but Warren Buffet. His quotes and opinions appear
to be near genius levels. He recently said that in the current
market if he could easily go out and buy 1000 homes he
would do it. If you have the resources and know how, I would
suggest do it. For everyone else, heeding the advice of long
term investors that have survived multiple real estate crashes
is your best resource for smart choices.

What are the key ingredients?

neither be learned in one article or one conversation; however
I will cover some key ingredients. Real estate investing can
be divided into two categories: ANALYSIS and LESSONS both
required for long term investment safety. Lessons are the
collective experiences you or someone you know has had in
the real estate market both good and bad. Pay close attention
to those stories as they have been repeated through history in
every up and down market ever recorded
ANALYSIS can be divided into two categories, Asset
Analysis and Personal Analysis. They go hand-in-hand so
it’s as important to understand your risk factor and fnancial
health as it is to understand the investment opportunities
presented to you.

There is no question that the tides have turned and the real
estate crash of 2008 appears to have ended. At Kaminsky
Real Estate Group the phone hasn’t stopped ringing since the
New Year with old and new clients calling to say they’re ready
to invest in real estate. Is it time again?
THEN: Remember the mid 2000’s: investors stood in
line for 3 days to buy a home, paid $600,000 and sold it the
next day for $750,000. Easy money! Ask all of those savvy
investors that were holding those homes when the market
crashed. We saw developers that were “all-in” using their
profts to buy land and build new homes lose it all. 2008 was
ugly, yet there were survivors and plenty of lessons learned
both from those who lost and those who gained.
NOW: When it comes to investing, in my opinion, there
is only one guru who seems to be right so far, no, not Ed
Kaminsky, but Warren Buffet. His quotes and opinions appear
to be near genius levels. He recently said that in the current
market if he could easily go out and buy 1000 homes he
would do it. If you have the resources and know how, I would
suggest do it. For everyone else, heeding the advice of long
term investors that have survived multiple real estate crashes
is your best resource for smart choices.

Theval of Dominique’s Kitchen in Redondo Beach
Ever wonder what professional chefs cook up at home when they’re not busy
running the show in their restaurant kitchens?
South Bay Digs was curious, so we decided to launch a new feature, “In The Kitchen With.”
We’ll take you into the home kitchens of some of the South Bay’s
most innovative chefs and restaurant industry pros. And we’ll even score a recipe or two!

From Bermuda to London and from Cambodia to
L.A., Chef Dominique Theval knows his way around
a kitchen. As chef-owner of Dominique’s Kitchen
in Redondo Beach, Theval has enjoyed a generous
helping of success since the restaurant opened in
2012. Here, he shares what’s on the menu chez Theval,
and offers some insider tips for hosting your next
dinner party. Bon appétit!
It’s a typical day at home. What are you cooking?
Dominique Theval: I’m particularly fond of mushroom
risotto with a simple mâche salad. Sometimes I’ll make
a cheese fondue with French Gruyère. I also enjoy Bleu
d’Auvergne, a blue cheese from France’s Auvergne
region. I usually get it at Bristol Farms. If I have time
to visit the farmer’s market, I’ll make some kind of
vegetable soup with organic peas, or a broccoli or
tomato soup.
When it comes to cooking, what do you do differently
at home versus at the restaurant?
DT: At home, you typically don’t have as many
ingredients as you would in a restaurant kitchen, so
home cooking is maybe not as complex as it is in
the restaurant, where you have a wide selection of
vegetables and other ingredients on hand. Being at
home forces you to improvise. You’re still making
good food, but with fewer ingredients. If I’m having
six or seven people over for dinner, I’ll usually braise
some kind of meat. If I’m really busy, a bit of fsh and
a salad works.
Do you do a lot of entertaining at home?
DT: A little bit. I used to do it a lot more often, but
I’ve stopped [since I opened the restaurant]. I used
to really enjoy preparing a four- or fve-course menu
for friends.
What are some of your favorite dishes to make when
you have company?
DT: There are a few things I really enjoy making. An
escargot or a risotto—I love risotto. Maybe some sea
scallops. For dessert I’ll make either a crème brûlée
or a souffé.
Let’s talk about wine pairing. What’s your philosophy?
DT: I don’t follow strict rules, but if I’m serving you a
crème brûlée and I give you a Cabernet Sauvignon to
go with it, I don’t think they’ll pair very well (laughs).
Many people love [the classic pairing of] Sauternes
with blue cheese. I would suggest some sort of chicken
dish to go with a lighter wine, and a big-bodied wine
with meat. I don’t care for really oaky wine with food.
For example, an oaky Chardonnay will overpower a
mild fsh dish.
What’s the most common mistake home cooks make?
DT: Trying too hard. People invite friends over for
dinner and they plan these really complex meals. They
end up not achieving what they wanted because the
process for preparing some of the dishes becomes
much too complicated. I don’t mean that you have to
be a Cordon Bleu graduate to be able to make more
elaborate meals; some people are naturally good at
cooking and have a good palate, which helps when
you’re experimenting.
What are the three most important things home
cooks should remember when entertaining at home?
DT: Sometimes, simplicity is best. Use fresh ingredients
and keep the recipes simple. Also, plan your dinner in
a way that allows you to be with your guests. Certain
recipes require you to cook on the spot, but with a
braised beef or a ratatouille, you can leave the stove
for a while and enjoy your guests. A good dinner party
menu allows you to be with your guests at least 65
percent of the time, instead of sweating away in the
kitchen. The third suggestion is to use recipes that you
know you can make well and that you’ve already made
at least a couple of times.
Are there any secrets or tricks of the trade you’d like
to share?
DT: Don’t season your beef with salt too far in advance.
It draws out the blood and makes the meat tough.
Season meat just before you cook it. Also, once you’ve
fnished roasting or barbecuing meat, let it rest for few
minutes before eating. The juices will settle back in the
center of the cut, making it more tender.
Red wine or white?
DT: It depends on my mood. Most of the time it’s red,
but there are some weeks I am into white wine.
Jacques Pepin or Julia Child?
DT: (Laughs). I think Julia did a really good thing for
French food. She brought it to America, so I’ll vote for
Julia Child.

CHEESE FONDUE

This easy fondue makes an elegant
appetizer or an impromptu dinner
for two. “If I’m making it as a dinner,
I’ll serve it with a mâche salad,”
says Theval.
INGREDIENTS:
1 cup Sauvignon Blanc
1 clove of garlic, chopped
Ground black pepper to taste
1 pound of diced or grated
French Gruyere cheese
2 tablespoons of kirsch
Diced bread or chopped vegetables
(such as asparagus or mushrooms
for dipping.)
Method:
Heat the fondue pot. Add the wine,
garlic and black pepper. Bring to a boil.
Add the cheese and whisk it into the
boiling wine until it melts and the
texture is smooth (2 to 3 minutes).
Stir in the kirsch and serve.

Serves 2 as a main meal;
4 as an appetizer.

designed by Kirtland Cutter, a popular architect of that time period whose work is
listed in State and National Registers of Historic Places. The surrounding landscape
was designed by the Olmstead Brothers, who were responsible for many high-
profle projects of that era, including numerous parks, universities, libraries, and
residential districts, and other projects in the South Bay area.
At a construction cost of $15,000, the 8,000-square-foot building included a
clubroom and areas for dressing and showering. The top level featured lifeguard’s
quarters and meeting rooms, with a freplace and large windows overlooking the pool.
The Club was built to stand approximately 20 feet above sea level at the foot
of the bluff below the Malaga Cove School playground. A path with an easy grade
took visitors down to the pool on the north side, while on the south side concrete
steps allowed visitors up and down the bluff.
The main pool measured 105 feet long by 45 feet wide, and was nine feet,
six inches deep at the deepest point, where both a high and a low spring board
had been placed. Salt water was pumped in from the ocean, sterilized, and then
warmed to 76 degrees. A small, circular wading pool was built for small children.
The Club was built primarily for the use of residents within Palos Verdes
Estates, and secondarily for the use of Palos Verdes lot holders. Open from June 1
to October 1, families living in the Estates could buy a seasonal pass for $40, and
rent bathing suits for just 25 cents.
In 1946, the structure experienced a fre that destroyed the upper levels of the
facility. The damage was left unrepaired and ultimately became a serious safety
hazard. Eventually repairs were made and in 1965, the new structure was renamed
Roessler Pool after the City’s frst mayor, H.F.B. Roessler, who served the City for
almost 26 years.
Eventually, the Club fell into disrepair and demolition was briefy considered.
The effort to refurbish the historic bathhouse was led by architect-designer Juan
Forteza of Forteza Design Group of Torrance. This ambitious restoration effort cost
an estimated $1.5 million, with a group of citizens proposing selling memberships
to raise capital for the remodeling costs. Reopened in 1992, the Palos Verdes Beach
& Athletic Club is now a semi-private membership facility.
Facilities available include a 5-story clubhouse, competition 6-lane pool,
children’s pool, and ftness center.
Palos Verdes has obviously enjoyed many more banner years since 1930 when
the Bath Club opened, and although it’s weathered many changes and undergone
many renovations, the structure still stands, easy to spot from the Esplanade, just
above water level.
