UFCW Local 1500 Endorses Austin Shafran for City Council
Shafran Gains Momentum as Pro-Middle Class Candidate Northeast Queens, NY—Today UFCW Local 1500, New York State’s largest grocery workers Union, announced its endorsement of Democrat Austin Shafran for City Council. This is the latest in a series of labor endorsements for Shafran, showing that he is the pro-middle class candidate with clear momentum and rapidly growing support in the race. “This is a high-priority Council race for our members, and we know that Austin is the candidate who will fight the hardest to strengthen and expand the middle class,” said Bruce W. Both, President of UFCW Local 1500. “Austin has consistently stood up for policies and legislation that will improve the lives of working families in Northeast Queens and throughout New York,” said Patrick Purcell, Assistant to the President of UFCW Local 1500. Austin understands our priorities very deeply because they are his priorities, too. Protecting workers from wage theft, holding Wal-Mart accountable for its irresponsible business practices and fighting for equality in the workplace are just a few of the many values our members share with Austin. We will campaign aggressively for him and do everything in our power to help him win,” Purcell concluded. “Growing up in a union household provided my family with a path to the middle class. As a member of the City Council, I will fight to improve the ability of our workers to build a life, support a family, and secure their piece of the American Dream,” said Austin Shafran. “I am deeply humlbed and honored to have the endorsement of a union whose members and leader have done so much for working families. Retail is one of the fastest-growing sectors of our local economy, and I plan to work closely with Local 1500 to improve the quality and quanitity of retail jobs that are the backbone of a strong middle-class-first economy.” Recently, Shafran received the first labor endorsement of this closely-watched race, earning the support of the Teamsters Joint Council 16, which represents over 120,000 workers from 29 local unions. Shafran most recently served in Governor Cuomo’s Administration as Vice President of Public Affairs for the state’s economic development agency, where he played a significant role in executing the Governor’s aggressive job growth and small business development agenda. In this capacity, Shafran helped to foster the growth of tens of thousands of new jobs and local businesses, administer over $1 billion in small business assistance programs, and reduce the tax

burden on middle-class families to its lowest rate in almost 60 years through fair share tax reform. Shafran has also worked for Congressman Gary Ackerman, the New York State Senate Democrats and City Councilman David Weprin. A former semi-professional baseball player, Shafran has volunteered to coach little league and mentor young players in local youth sports organizations in our community. Throughout his career in public service over the past decade, he has helped enact policies and legislation to improve the lives of seniors, children, women, and working families and businesses. UFCW Local 1500 represents grocery workers in New York City, Long Island, Westchester, Putnam and Dutchess Counties. Members of Local 1500 are employed by Pathmark, King Kullen, Stop and Shop, Gristedes, Key Food. Fairway, D'agastinos and Shop Rite.
