■ Jimmie Johnson jump started his quest for a sixth Sprint Cup Championship with a win Sunday in the Daytona 500, a race he completed just one lap in the previous year. Johnson sped away from the field after a restart with six laps left in Sunday’s Daytona 500 and held off a charging Dale Earnhardt Jr. to win the 55th running of the Great American Race at Daytona International Speedway. The victory was the 61st of Johnson’s career in his 400th start in the NASCAR Sprint Cup Series and his second win in NASCAR’s most prestigious race. Earnhardt finished second for the third time in the last four Daytona 500s. Mark Martin ran third, followed by defending series champion Brad Keselowski and Ryan Newman. Greg Biffle ran sixth and Regan Smith seventh. Polesitter Danica Patrick came home eighth, the bestever finish by a woman in the Daytona 500. After a restart on Lap 182, following the fifth caution of the race for Jeff Burton’s hard contact with the outside wall at the entrance to the tri-oval, Keselowski and Johnson ran side-by-side at the front of the pack, trading the lead as their respective lanes gained momentum. A caution for debris on Lap 192 set up the six-lap dash to the finish. Patrick made history when she led the field to green from the pole position. On Lap 90, she reached another milestone. Surging to the lead after a restart, she paced the field on Laps 90 and 91, and, in doing so, became the first female driver to lead a lap in the Daytona 500 and the first female to lead a green-flag Lap in the Cup series. ■ Tony Stewart won Saturday’s DRIVE4COPD 300 at Daytona International Speedway, but the elation of his victory disappeared in the wake of a heart-stopping wreck that saw Kyle Larson’s car demolished after flying into the crossover gate that provides access from the continued on next page

By Tom Herzig EAST MONTPELIER – The U-32 girls basketball team is breaking new ground with every game. The Raiders responded to an opening game loss in December at Hartford, 26-23, in the best possible way. They haven’t lost since and their 18-game winning streak is the best in school history. Barring an upset at Oxbow in the final regular-season game, U-32 will take a school-best 19-1 record into the upcoming Division II tournament. They will likely begin play the week of March 4 as the No. 2 seed. Coach Travis Paquet points out that one of the benefits of the high ranking – Mount Abraham projects as the No. 1 seed – is that bus trips won’t be necessary. “It’s a luxury to be able to stay local for the tournament games,” Paquet said. “We’ve earned it, but to be able to play on our home court in the first two games and only have to zip over to the Aud if we advance that far, that’s huge.” The Raiders have been led by the play of senior point guard Kristen Keene and the scoring and rebounding of junior Maddie Bennett, but Paquet is quick to point out that depth and defense are the keys to the team’s success. “Our biggest strength is that we have a strong bench,” Paquet said. “We’re wearing people down in the second half.” U-32 has held its opponents to an average of 28 points per game. Seniors Darcy Schmoll, Molly Barr and Ashley Gant join Keene and Bennett as starters. Lauren Kuske and Liz Ksepka supply rebound-

ing back-up and interior defense. Avery Alberghini, Abi Daniels, Kaylee Herring, Kathleen Webber and Caroline Badeau have significantly contributed to the win streak on a nightly basis. “Kristen is our floor leader,” Paquet said. “She started as a sophomore. We put her on the other team’s point guard. She scores. She rebounds. She’s an excellent foul shooter. She brings a lot.” “Bennett combines height with agility,” Paquet said. “She’s quick off the floor, she wants the ball and she’s a team player. Gant started as a junior. She’s gives us toughness. She’s not afraid of contact.” Schmoll drew praise as a versatile swing player who does whatever is asked of her. “We were down by one point against Thetford with two seconds to go and she sank two free throws,” Paquet said. “She’s very composed.” U-32 has won two Division II girls basketball state championships - in 1998 and 2004. The 1998 team, coached by Mike Macke, included Bekah Murphy, Hilary Goodrich, Liz Gosselin, Penne Dodge and Shawna Liff. The Raiders defeated Milton 56-39. In 2004, the last time U-32 made it to the finals, the Raiders outscored Mount Abraham 35-12 in the second half to claim the crown. Julie Gall led all scorers with 22 points.
