From the Rock Tunnel Pokemon Center, head north until you find some water. Surf right around the canal until you reach a large building - this is the Power Plant. Go right inside and talk to the Manager, who is standing by the generators. He'll tell you that it's been ruined, and on your way out, you'll be asked to help. Follow the guard's advice to Cerulean City, which is directly west of the Rock Tunnel Pokemon Center. If you're lazy and don't feel you need the experience, simply Fly to Saffron City and head north. The only real thing in Cerulean City is the gym, so head there and you'll run into a Rocket member who's missing a few brain cells. He'll babble on aimlessly and then run off. He's actually stolen the a part needed to fix the Power Plant generator, so check the middle of the Cerulean Gym where the bridge complete encloses a square of four tiles, and you'll receive a Machine Part. Head north onto Nugget Bridge where you'll find the Rocket. Talk to him and you'll battle (He's only got a Golbat). He'll reveal the location of the Machine Part, but you should already have it. Don't return it to the Power Plant just yet, continue north to the end of the bridge. If you Surf down the water, you'll eventually see a boy standing in someone's backyard (If you talked to him before, he's the one who said his Itemfinder was responding). Immediately to the

left of him, hidden in the corner of the cliff is a Berserk Gene. From the bridge, head east and you'll fight seven trainers - talk to the eighth person you see and he'll give you a Nugget, then will battle you. (The item behind the Cut bush is a Protein). Continue onwards and you'll see Misty, who will agree to fight you back at the Cerulean Gym. The house you're standing outside is home to Bill's Grandfather, who will give you evolution stones if you show him a certain Pokemon. Check out the FAQs for more information. In the mean time, head back to Cerulean Gym. Cerulean City Gym Misty's trainers will have now filled the gym, but your real goal is the girl at the back. Bring on the heavy Electric-type attacks like Thunderbolt, and if Rain Dance gets underway, Thunder. You'll need a Grass type for Quagsire as its Ground half is immune to Electric attacks; now would be a good time to try out TM19. When you win, you'll receive the Cascade Badge. It's time to return to the Power Plant with the Machine Part.

Restoring Power Talk to the Manager and he'll thank you with TM07 - Zap Cannon. With the power back, there's some things that need to be done. First of all, Fly to Lavender Town and talk to the Radio Tower manager (They guy by the tables) to get an Expn Card, which lets you tune into the Kanto Radio Stations. Secondly, Fly to Saffron City and visit the CopyCat (She's in the house south of the Magnet Train station). She'll tell you that she's lost her favourite Pokedoll, so go to the Vermilion City Pokemon Fanclub to retrieve it (It's that Clefairy Doll). She'll thank you with a Pass, which lets you use the Magnet Train at any time! The Magnet Train will take you between Saffron City in Kanto to Goldenrod City in Johto - it's a lot more convenient than the SS Aqua. Finally, head to Snorlax east of Vermilion City. Equip yourself with a few Ultra Balls (Or Heavy Balls) and tune your Pokegear's Radio to a frequency of 20 - the PokeFlute. Walk up to Snorlax, examine it, and it will attack you. Snorlax

Snorlax, a Normal type, is one of the most powerful Pokemon in GSC. With its ridiculously high HP, Attack and Special Defense, as well as a huge move pool, Snorlax became a powerhouse with moves like Curse and Belly Drum to maximise its attack, as well as Return, Double-edge and Body Slam to cause severe damage with STAB. If you don't catch it, at least use Thief to grab the Leftovers attached to Snorlax. The cave behind it is Diglett's Cave, and this leads to Pewter City. Bring along someone with Cut, and traverse the underground. Pewter City On exiting, head east and north to get a Carbos, then visit the house to the south to get a Nugget. Just north of here is Pewter City, and you'll have to use Cut to get through. Find the man walking around to the right of the PokeMart. He'll give you a Silver Wing if you're playing Pokemon Gold, or a Rainbow Wing if you're playing Pokemon Silver. While Pewter City's Museum is closed for renovations, the Gym is always open. It's not essential that you come here, but it's a very good idea to, especially if today is Monday. Heading east from Pewter City, you'll eventually come across a cave opening, and on entering, you'll be confronted by your rival. He'll attack with a lv41 Sneasel, a lv41 Magneton, a lv42 Golbat, a lv43 Alakazam, a lv43 Gengar and a lv45 fully evolved starter. After the battle, you can head south to the exit, which leads back to Cerulean City, but you should head east and up the ladder. If you do decide to go to Cerulean City, there's an HP Up on the top ledge of Route 4. During the day, the shop here will be open for business, but on Monday nights, Clefairy will gather here, to dance and pray to the Moon Stone.

On approaching them, they'll run away and you can use Rock Smash to break open the rock and get the Moon Stone. This occurs every Monday so you'll never run out of Moon Stones. You're done here, so Fly back to Pewter City. Viridian City and Pallet Town Route 2 Wild Pokemon

Viridian City's newest feature is the Trainer House, where you can battle a copy of the last person that you used Mystery Gift with. The default is Cal, who has a level 50 Meganium, Typhlosion and Feraligatr. You can only do this once a day though. The wild Pokemon here are quite high levelled, so this is a good place to train. Just head all the way west until you spot the Pokemon Center, and use this as a base to train. If you check your Pokegear, you'll see you're back in Johto. If you follow the path created when you Cut down the bush just to the east of the Pokemon Center, you'll find a house where the occupant inside will give you TM47 - Steel Wing. If you continue down the path (Don't jump off the ledge), you'll find a hidden Rare Candy. Just beyond the Pokemon Center is a cave entrance. Inside is the world's most powerful trainer. You'll need Flash for the first room, but if you're good, you can use the map to the left to navigate. It's a good idea to bring in someone with Waterfall and Surf too, because there's some exploring to do. You can always return to the Pokemon Center and make changes to your lineup to face the final challenge.

If you've trained properly and have a bit of luck, you should be able to beat him at level 60. * Pikachu, the first Pokemon, can be fainted in one shot by a strong Earthquake from a Groundtype Pokemon. * Espeon isn't difficult to beat either, a Dark-type or a Pokemon with high Special Defense should be able to take it down. * Snorlax will be a real difficulty. If you have a Ghost, Steel or Rock Pokemon you should be able to survive long enough. The difficulty comes when it uses Rest, or when Body Slam paralyses. Don't bother with status ailments as Rest will cancel its effects. Your best bet is to stick with strong physical attacks, especially Fighting attacks, and persevere. * Blastoise will attempt to use Rain Dance, then trap you with Whirlpool. If someone knows Thunder, use Rain Dance to your advantage, otherwise just hit it with strong Electric attacks. * While Venusaur has a deadly Sunny Day combo, use it to your advantage by hitting it with Level 77 Level 77 Level 77 Level 81 Level 75 Level 73

If Sunny Day is in effect from Venusaur, Water damage is halved, and Flamethrower/Fire Spin's damage is boosted. Since this is the final battle, don't be afraid to use your items - Full Restores come in handy here, and things like X Special and X Attack will help too. Give it everything you've got. Red will disappear in a fadeout, and the credits will roll. That's it! You've beaten the toughest trainer in Pokemon Gold, Silver and Crystal. But don't worry, he'll be back so you can fight him again. Feel free to wander around the world, doing sidequests and completing your Pokedex. Well done on a long, but enjoyable game. Optional Areas The following is a whole guide to the optional areas of the game. The Ruins of Alph can be found to the west of Violet City. It consists of a central cave surrounded by four smaller caves. In each of these smaller caves lies a sliding puzzle that you have to solve - each puzzle unlocks certain letters of the Unown alphabet so if you want to complete the set of 26, you'll have to solve them all. Solution: The first puzzle, Kabuto, can be accessed very early in the game. The cave is very close to the entrance to the Ruins of Alph and just above the Research Center. A Pokemon that hid on the sea floor. Eyes on its back scanned the area. Solution: The second puzzle, Aerodactyl, can be accessed after you have HM03 - Surf. The cave is south of the Ruins entrance, past the small patch of water. This flying Pokemon attacked its prey with saw-like fangs. Solution:

The third puzzle, Ho-oh, can be accessed after you have HM03 - Surf. You must head through Union Cave to get to this place. Mid-way between the entrance and exit, there is a ladder heading down to the next floor. In the next room, surf across the water and exit at the northernmost opening. Defeat the Psychic, and enter the cave. A Pokemon that flew gracefully on rainbow-colored wings. The final puzzle, Omanyte, can be accessed after you have HM03 - Surf and HM04 - Strength. Like the third puzzle, you must go through Union Cave. Instead of exiting through the northermost opening on the second floor, head west after surfing and use Strength on the rock to get past and into the final cave. This Pokemon drifted in the sea by twisting its ten tentacles.

Solution:

After completing each of the puzzles, you'll drop down into the main chamber where you can encounter wild Unown. By catching three different kinds of Unown, you can grab an Unown Dex at the Research Center. Each Unown has a word associated with it, but these have no real significance. Take a look at our complete Unown Dex here. You can access your Unown Dex but opening up the Pokedex and pressing [Select]. Once you've completed the dex, you can print them out at the Research Center. Union Cave Union Cave 1F Wild Pokemon Pokemon Method Time Rate Goldeen

Return to Union Cave with Surf and head in through the entrance closest to Azalea Town. Ideally, come on a Friday, and bring along anything necessary to catch a Pokemon. You'll find that by surfing over one of the pools of water you can access a whole new level with some new trainers and Pokemon.

[ Union Cave Basement Map ] Try out one of the Fishing Rods here too. The item in the top right is an Elixir while the item in the middle of the map is a Hyper Potion. The real prize here is a lv20 Lapras at the bottom of the map. It reappears every Friday so you can catch more than one. Lapras

Lapras is a dual Water/Ice type with one of the best movepools in the game. With ridiculously high HP and moves like Rest, Substitute and Confuse Ray to keep it alive, it can stall for time as well as launch an impressive array of elemental moves like Surf, Ice Beam, Psychic and Thunderbolt. For the truly cheap, try out Rest, Sleep Talk and Horn Drill. Mt. Mortar Mt Mortar is situated on Route 42, between Ecruteak City and Mahogany Town. You will need a spare slot in your party (i.e., carry 5 Pokemon) as well as Flash, Surf, Waterfall and Strength. If you're really impatient, then bring along a good supply of Repels, but you run the risk of missing the chance to capture a rare Marill. The item on the far left is a Rare Candy, while the item on the far right is a Max Potion. TM40 Defense Curl can be found on the raised platform in the center of the map; an Escape Rope is on the top-right platform; an important Dragon Scale is on the platform at the top-center and finally an Elixir can be found just south of the ladder (G). Once again, check suspicious rocks around the place for hidden items. Ladder (G) leads to the Lower Cave where you'll find yourself on a raised platform above the rest of the level. No items on this level. You'll eventually reach the roof of Tin Tower where you'll find Ho-oh resting. If you don't want to catch it (I really suggest you do catch it), at least Thief it for a Sacred Ash. Ho-oh

Ho-oh is a dual Fire/Flying type, meaning that it has a nasty 4x weakness to Rock-type attacks. Nevertheless, like other legendaries, Ho-oh has some great stats (namely Attack and Special Defense), as well as some really good moves at its disposal. One includes its unique attack, Sacred Fire, which causes good Fire damage as well as burns 50% of the time. Take advantage

of its high attack with moves like Earthquake, Shadow Ball and Ancientpower. Throw in Recover, Curse and Roar, and you'll have a strong Pokemon on your team. Alternatively, utilise the Special Attack with the Sunny Day/Sacred Fire/Solarbeam combo. The Whirl Islands are situated on the sea route that takes you between Olivine City and Cianwood City. As the name suggests, the islands are surrounded by Whirlpools that require use of HM06 - Whirlpool to remove. Bring along some Pokemon that can use Surf, Whirlpool and Flash, and if you want, Strength and Waterfall. You should also have the Silver Wing and have some Ultra Balls. There are four islands that lead to a massive underground cave, and these have been appropriately labelled A, B, C and D on this map: [ Whirl Islands ] Each island entrance takes you a certain part of the cave and have been labelled with the corresponding letters. The ladders inside the cave have been labelled numerically to distinguish them from the exits.

To skip the exploration bit and get to Lugia, enter the cave through Island B, then chose the upper path to go down Ladder 2. This will lead you to Ladder 3 at the top of the waterfall - just head down and into the cave where a lv40 (Pokemon Silver) or lv70 (Pokemon Gold) Lugia will be waiting for you. Lugia

Lugia is a strong Psychic/Flying type and a very worthy addition to any team. Its defense stats are sky-high, and combined with Recover, it's an extremely hard Pokemon to take down. A common moveset utilises TM03 - Curse, where a drop is Speed in traded for a rise in Attack and Defense. While keeping its HP high with Recover, you can use Lugia to dish out the damage with physical moves like Shadow Ball, Earthquake and its unique attack, Aeroblast. Add a good special attack like Psychic, Thunderbolt, Surf or Ice Beam, and you have a force to be reckoned with.

But for the real hardcore players who want everything (Good on you!), here's a listing of all the items: - Ultra Ball, by Ladder 1 in Cave B. - Guard Spec, by Ladder 5 in Cave C. - Escape Rope, just to the south of Exit 7 in the main cavern. - Calcium, to the north of Ladder D in the main cavern. - Carbos, en route to Ladder 6 from Ladder A in the main cavern. - Full Restore, to the south of the stairs immediately near Ladder A in the main cavern. - Nugget, to the west of Ladder 1 in the main cavern - circle round by dropping down the ledge then heading up the stairs to the raised platform.
