1934 79 YEARS 2013

Veterans of Foreign Wars Post #1223, Ladies Auxiliary & Mens Auxiliary VOL. 41 NO. 3 & 4 March/April
LADIES AUX PRESIDENTS CORNER
by Karen Haugen I hope everyone is having a wonderful winter, it is soon over. With the end of the cold weather comes the end of our year, in only a couple of months we will be electing new officers. Please consider becoming an officer, or a committee chairman. We do a lot of wonderful things for our Veterans, and we would love to have you join us. There are about 20 of you out there that have not paid your dues for this year, please take a minute and drop your check in the mail or stop by the post office, it is only $20. March 9th we are off to New York Mills for the District 9 meeting, if you would like a ride, give me a call. It is also our District 9 President, Sharon Theil's testimonial that evening. Come out and join me May 4th for the Men's Auxiliary Day as they host the Kick-Off for the Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer. I along with two great friends, Karen Hystad and John Lopez will be getting our heads shaved. Rumor has it a couple more friends are thinking they might join us. We will do this to honor the memory of those we have lost to cancer and to help raise money to fight the battle to find a cure for this horrible disease! Keep our Veterans and their families in your prayers. Karen Haugen 701-367-1518

COMMANDERS CORNER
by Jason Hicks Greetings Comrades, Spring is just around the corner (I hope as I write this) and with that another successful year at the VFW. I had the opportunity to attend the mid-winter conference in the Cities. It was a great opportunity to see lots of familiar faces as well as some new ones. The down side is that our organization is on the decline, there were many many seats left empty at the Council of administration. Of course one of the big focuses was membership. It is really no secret that the younger Veterans are not joining like years/wars past. If you know somebody that is eligible for the VFW encourage them to join. Because as much as I do not care for lobby groups the VFW has strong voice in Washington DC and it is strong because of membership. The current state of our Republic is going to require some cuts and for whatever reason Congress always lines of Military cuts first and with those cuts come cuts to Veterans. Currently the members of Congress that have served in the Military are few and far between, so the majority really has no clue of the sacrifice made by our Veterans. I am very proud to say that the VFW Supper club has become very successful and business doing well. I encourage you to come down and try some of Al Gordon's meals, both Italian and American, he really does a great job and takes pride in his work. Also on St. Patrick's day we will be serving our world famous corned beef and cabbage (make sure to mark your calendars) In closing remember to fly our nation's flag at your home as a symbol of the greatest country the world has ever seen. Yours in Comradeship Jason

MENS AUX PRESIDENTS CORNER

by Joshua Haugen
Well old man winter will just not let up on us, but that has not stopped the Men's Auxiliary from putting on another great pancake feed this last month. It's great to see so many familiar faces as well as several new ones. I would like to remind everyone that our pancake breakfasts are the 3rd Saturday of the month, and they go from 8 am to 11 am. Each breakfast you attend you have can enter for a chance to win a free breakfast the following month, as well as a grand prize to be drawn at the end of the season for a $200 Wal-Mart gift card. May 4th is Men's Auxiliary Day is a daylong event starting with a breakfast from 8am to 11am. We are once again hosting the Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer Kick-Off the same day. We have a motorcycle run starting at 11:30, registration from 8 11 Lunch will be served by the Men's Auxiliary from 11 to 4, A pulled pork dinner will be served from 4 to 7:30 The Silent auction will start at 8AM and close at 7PM We wrap up the evening with a night of karaoke. I have heard that shortly after 7 we will be shaving a few heads, the Post Quartermaster and the Auxiliary President, along with some friends have volunteered to continue this tradition. If you have anything you would like to donate for this event or know of any business that would like to donate please contact any other member of the Men's Auxiliary. We are still working on collecting items for the silent auction items and donations for the lunch and dinner. Any help is greatly appreciated. All the proceeds from the dinner and the Silent Auction go to the Cowboy Up Ride Against Cancer, which is a fundraiser for the Roger Maris Cancer Center.

QUARTERMASTERS CORNER
by John Lopez
Comrades, As of this writing we currently have 584 Life members, 41 currently paid continuous members, 6 reinstates, and 1 new member for a total of 632 members. We ended last year with 661 members, so we are still 29 members short of our goal. We still have 21 unpaid continuous members. For those of you that are unpaid, please remember that the May/June newsletter will be your last one unless you pay your dues. At the quartermaster trainings I have attended we are being told there will be changes in the continuous membership program. There are quite a few proposed changes, but nothing can change until it is approved at the National Convention this summer. Keep an eye on your mail as I will send out an update to all of the continuous members once any changes are passed. In Comradeship, John Lopez Quartermaster

Poppy season is all year round, but the end of April, first part of May we ask for donations to help our Disabled Veterans. All monies collected are giving back to the Veterans. We know some can't volunteer or attend meetings. We understand the situations. This is one way to give back. Please sent donations to the VFW Club 1505 Center Ave. W Dilworth MN 56529, ATTN: Lynette. Thank you & God bless our veterans!!

JUNIOR GIRLS CORNER

by Karen Haugen & Joann Lien
The Jr Girls continue to be active, helping out with events hosted by both the Ladies and the Men's Auxiliary's. We are planning to attend Loyalty Days this year; this will be their first District meeting. They will be selling jewelry they made. We are raising money to send them to camp in June. If you have a daughter or granddaughter that is eligible to join please give me or Joann Lien a call. We meet the 2nd Sunday of the month at 12:30. We are always looking for new members, to join in the fun. They are a great group of girls; they work hard and are having a lot of fun. Karen Haugen 701-367-1518 Joann Lien 701-388-1563
