INT. HOUSE PARTY LIVING ROOM - NIGHT The house is filled with excited youth drinking and dancing. Bottles and cans litter the floors and tables. In the center of the living room, MARK, ROB, DALE, HUNTER, EVAN, STACEY, and KRISTA are sitting on the couches and chairs talking to each other, completely drunk. ROB What about the Grudge? MARK That movie about that kid that meowed at people in his underwear? Yeah I was terrified. STACEY The Exorcist? MARK That movie was supposed to be scary? The others around Mark raise their hands and shout in protest. HUNTER Are you serious? MARK Honest to god I thought that movie was supposed to be funny. HUNTER Okay, how about the Blair Witch Project? EVAN What? That movie sucked, dude. Nobody would’ve been scared of that. HUNTER Naw man, the first time I saw that movie I didn’t sleep right for like a month. EVAN What’d you think, Mark? MARK Well...
Mark grabs a beer can off of the ground and shakes it. He puts it back down and lifts another one. He shakes it next to his ear, then drinks the contents before dropping it back to the floor. MARK (CONT’D) Whatever it was supposed to be, it sure as hell wasn’t scary. HUNTER How was it not scary? MARK Come on dude, it wasn’t like any of that could happen to me. It’s not like some creepy little ghost girl is gonna’ rise up from the floor and make animal noises at me. Even if she did, I think I could take her. It just wasn’t believable. That’s why none of these movies are scary, man. There’s nothing like that in the real world to be afraid of. KRISTA Oh yeah? Krista looks around at the others before leaning in to whisper. KRISTA (CONT’D) You ever hear ofKrista drunkenly falls forward into the table. She gets back into her seat and leans forward again as if nothing happened. KRISTA (CONT’D) That house off Dire lane? Mark shakes his head. KRISTA (CONT’D) It’s been condemned for years, ever since the last owner died. The rest of the group leans in and listens intently. ROB How did he die?
. HUNTER Yeah. My parents used to be friends with one of her neighbors... after she’d dropped her kids off at school in the morning. . Yeah. I can feel you always watching. Apparently when she’d go to check the mail. the doctors and police said she was bipolar. about two weeks before she died the neighbors noticed she started to act. but the thing is.. But.. never seemed too crazy or weird or anything. Some days she could even be seen punching or kissing the outside. Krista looks over to Hunter and gives an exaggerated wink. KRISTA (CONT’D) Isn’t that right Hunter? Hunter looks to her in a slight panic. I guess. They said she was completely normal. Krista keeps staring at Hunter. strange. Hunter examines her. Thing when I was younger. Day and night people would hear her screaming at the top of her lungs... that umKRISTA She was famous for talking to the house. but if you were to ask her neighbors it wasn’t that simple.. of course. HUNTER Uh. momentarily dumbfounded. she would randomly just start screaming at the house... they told me about the uh..” EVAN That kinda sounds like it was directed at the creepy neighbors that were watching her check the mail. and she only did all this when her kids were away. Yelling things like “I know you can see me.3.. KRISTA Well..
KRISTA Thank you sir. so she was a crazy lady who talked to her house. They wouldn’t want her to get in trouble for nothing if it all just turned out to be a misunderstanding. MARK Okay. Mark laughs. Please don’t say anymore. KRISTA Don’t be an asshole. please go on.. So. MARK I apologize. “What about Tom and Ricky?” She’d scream. ROB Well I would’ve said something. laughing with his friends as he tries to keep it steady. Krista drunkenly points at Mark. let me finish. HUNTER I’m sure you would’ve Rob.. after a moment of silence. one of the things she was known to mention when she would get into one of her little spats with the house. Stacey is sleeping on a chair in front of a random partygoer who sits his drink on her head. it was always followed by her screaming in anguish “No! I can’t do that! Please no!” ROB What kind of fucked up friends did your parents have that would hear all this and not call Child Protective Services or something? KRISTA They’d known her a long time. I would like to be able to get to sleep tonight. .4. Then. was what she would do with the kids.
RANDOM PARTYGOER (O. KRISTA (CONT’D) This is about where you cut in right? After all. but there was a lot. were the letters RIP. you know whatever people did back then. (annoyed) Aw what the fuck? HUNTER So my parent’s friends. Hunter gives a confident thumbs up at Krista before chucking his beer randomly behind him. tells his wife to wait by the gate while he checks it out. He rushes in to see what’s up and stops next to the stairs. Kev. the neighbors you know. Doorway’s completely open. Stacey adjusts her sitting position and is awakened by the partygoer’s drink as it spills all over her. Like all the way. decide they should go see if anything’s wrong. So the husband. The trail of blood led to the door and dripped from the knob. worried about what this lady might do if she sees him. He goes to the house and calls the cops really quick before looking around for his wife. He looks around the upstairs hallway and sees another bloody RIP next to the second story bathroom. the police car shows up and a couple cops get out. the door was gone. and there in the tub is this crazy chick’s son. He goes in all sneaky. so he runs up the stairs. so the cops jump the gate and go charging in.6. He walks in. Cops said later he was drowned. run like hell back to his house and call the cops. HUNTER (CONT’D) He slowly makes his way back there. stink. STACEY Wait. poking his head around the opening in the front. he sees a trail of blood leading from the RIP on the stairs and going outside. lo’ and behold. Before he could hop it. Kev sees this and starts thinking about where the other kid was. Kev explains what he’s doing and that his wife is missing. After he was sure that she wasn’t in his house.. So Kev sees this. Inside is this big open room. he went back to the gate. When he gets down to the first floor again. completely empty. same as the rest of the house. After he jumps the gate and starts heading back he notices that his wife wasn’t waiting for him where he left her. He sees that it’s a bathroom and. looking for the mom. At this point he’s freaking out a little bit. and does what any normal person would do. Kev starts running around the house..
stopping him.’ So he leaves and then this guy with a hook for a hand kills him. I’d better head home. Then he leaves his hook on the car door and the wife finds it. STACEY (excited) Oh that sounds fun. Dale hides his laughter as the silence lingers. ‘I’m gonna go get some gas. cutting off Hunter. MARK (CONT’D) Besides. MARK I wish I could. Stacey looks on at the rest of the group who are glaring back in confused disapproval. wait here. Stacey leans in. . Mark pulls out his cellphone and checks the time. Hunter gets up and puts his arms in front of Mark. So the guy is all like. MARK Guys. STACEY (CONT’D) So. there was this couple that were driving down this street. I really don’t think I can take anymore scares tonight. Dale leans in close to Stacey’s ear and cups his hand over his mouth. it’s almost three o’clock.7. you’ve gotta admit it was kinda creepy. and they ran out of gas. but I can’t. STACEY Hey it’s not our fault Stacey broke the mood. let me try. DALE (whispered) I think Hunter and Kris are making up some story to try and creep out Mark. My little heart just might burst from all the fear.
you think if we went there right now some ghost’ll rise up and declare vengeance upon her house? HUNTER Who knows. I’m not afraid of imaginary ghost people yelling at houses in the middle of the night. MARK Fuck it. Mark grabs another can of beer off of the ground and shakes it by his ear before drinking the contents. It was just like any other scary story. the reason it’s been condemned for so long. but is it perhaps. HUNTER Yeah. man? We might. Hunter and Krista look at each other anxiously. MARK Listen. from three to five. Every night. it is. Hunter mouths the words “What do we do?” and Krista nods her head toward the kitchen. MARK I’m gonna’ go out on a limb here. It’s ridiculous anyway. Mark rolls his eyes..8. the neighbors can still hear her yelling at the house. I’m up for a little adventure. haunted? Mark raises his arms and makes ghost noises as the rest of the group laughs. HUNTER Hold on. Let’s go. . You don’t think anything about that story was scary? MARK Wait how many cars do we have? DALE Did you bring yours? MARK Yeah. KRISTA How many people does your car hold? MARK Five. I’m down. EVAN Yeah. . Mark closes the back door and Krista turns toward the crowd. DALE I guess.. KRISTA I think. KRISTA Did anyone else bring a car? Evan points at a truck across the street. Mark stops at the edge of the sidewalk. He fails and the keys fall beside his feet. I think.. here you go. and I don’t know the way. go Krista!/Krissy’s The man!/etc. Sounds fun.. but there’s no way I’m cool to drive.. then attempts to throw them to Krista. I think I might be okay. FRONT OF HOUSE - NIGHT The group walks past the side of the house, still unable to see it behind the thicket of trees. They walk along the trail toward a break in the tall grass that grows wildly around the house. They make it through the break in the grass and find themselves standing directly in front of the house. The group looks up at it silently. The house is two stories tall, looking dilapidated and rundown. There are no doors, but there is an open doorway going out onto the front porch.
In front of the porch is several feet of sticker weed and gravel. There is an open window on the second story with a curtain blowing in the wind attached to the frame. MARK I’ve gotta hand it to you guys... Mark looks over at Hunter and Krista. MARK (CONT’D) You guys really picked a good house. Which one of you guys is gonna’ give the tour? KRISTA I guess I should. Krista takes a few steps toward the house, stopping for a moment to look up at the second story window cautiously. The curtain has stopped flowing from the breeze. Once she looks away it begins moving again. Krista takes a few steps closer to the door, careful to avoid the pricks of the sticker weed. As she enters the open doorway a bat flies past, startling her along with the rest of the group. STACEY What the fuck was that? MARK (laughing) A bat. STACEY Gross. I don’t want to go anywhere with bats. ROB No offense Stacey, but I don’t think you’d even notice if a bat flew up your skirt right now. STACEY Yes I would. . so what do you say we relax and drink ours.. . ROB You want us good and drunk for this don’t you? KRISTA That was the plan. Krista looks down the hallway and sees streaks of darker auburn colored wood along the ground. and if you get too scared to be in a room you chug an entire can? MARK If anybody thinks they heard or saw something then everybody has to go investigate it. HUNTER Wow. Looks like we’re not going to have to save any for Evan or Dale. Everyone begins looking around the front room and setting down the drinks. if you think you see something that’s two drinks. from what I’ve heard. I didn’t know you were conscious. She keeps her eyes focused down the hallway as she puts the drinks down on an old table. Everybody stares wide-eyed at Stacey for a moment.26. then make a drinking game out of the rest of the night? STACEY Oh that sounds fun! What are the rules? KRISTA Okay. How about if you think you hear something you take a drink. MARK Should we explore or chill a little first? HUNTER Let’s just hang out for a minute. Actually it was only the cops that checked the barn that disappeared. STACEY I thought all the cops that investigated went missing.
Dale lowers the recorder and presses a button. Don’t they use it on those ghosthunting shows? They play it back and it’s all static. while Dale is busy looking through all of the things he stole from the store. DALE (CONT’D) Speak to me spirits. Dale holds up a voice recorder to his mouth. Dale points the flashlight at Evan’s face. The group stands up and toasts a can of beer to eachother.O. The game starts after we each shotgun one beer. . check this one out. Let me hear your cries. It’ll be more fun if we all investigate together anyway. Mark jumps up from the table and rushes to the hallway. right.29. MARK Agreed. tripping over a leg of the table. Everyone other than Hunter gets up and follows close behind. KRISTA You’ve been awfully quiet. I’m sorry. MARK (CONT’D) Okay. HUNTER Yeah. The rest of the group begins laughing heavily. ROB You don’t say? KRISTA Maybe we should get rid of that last rule. Krista stops and goes back to Hunter. HOUSE . The rest of the group wait for them. MARK Okay. . now what was that last rule? The group looks around to eachother. Mark gets back up.

We can’t just figure out this thing’s weakness and stop it so easily. this isn’t a movie. DALE Well. like I said earlier. and a whole lot of it. there was no reason for her to have one. KEVIN Well I guess I’ll just have to take your word for it and see what happens. The only thing we can hope for is luck.
