It is located in the southern part of the Yangtze River Delta, at the western end of Hangzhou Bay, in the lower reaches of the Qiantang River, and at the southern end of Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal. It is an important and central city in the Yangtze River Delta and a traffic hub in southeast China.

Hangzhou was settled as early as 4,700 years ago, thus giving birth to the auroral Liangzhu Civilization. One of the seven ancient capitals and the key scenic tourism and historical culture cities in China, Hangzhou once was applauded asthe most splendid and luxurious city in the world by Marco Polo, the Italian traveler in the 13th century.

Hangzhou is a city with rich historical heritage and colorful cultures, also one of the seven ancient capitals in China. The Liangzhu Civilization created by our forefathers living here about 5000 years ago was considered the dawn of the Chinese civilization. Originally known as Yu Hang, Hangzhou had former names such as Qian Tang, Lin An and so on. It used to be the capital of China in Wuyue Kingdom, Southern Song Dynasy and some other dynasies. Hangzhou is endowed with high value historical relics, which are characterized by long time span and rich varieties.

The native residents of Hangzhou speak a Wu dialect. However, the Wu dialect varies throughout the area where it is spoken, hence, Hangzhous dialect differs from regions. Tea is an important part of Hangzhous economy and culture. Hangzhou is best known for originating Longjing, a notable variety of green tea, the most notable type being Xi Hu Long Jing. Known as the best type of Long Jing tea, Xi Hu Long Jing is grown near Xi Hu in Hangzhou, hence its name.
