Review and practice what theyve covered in class Prepare for the next days lesson Learn to use resources such as libraries, reference materials and websites to find information about a subject Teach them to work independently To develop work habits and study skills In addition, homework can help create greater understanding between families and teachers and provide opportunities for increased communication. Some homework tips are: 1. Pick a PlaceYour childs homework area doesnt have to be fancy. It should have good lighting and be fairly quiet. In some cases, it may be best for the child to be close to your for monitoring and assistance. Make sure all the materials that are needed (pencils, dictionary, etc.) are in that area so the time in not spent running around trying to gather these items. Talk to your childs teacher about the appropriate use of computers as a learning and homework tool. Public Libraries have computers and the internet available to students after school hours. 2. Remove DistractionsTurn off the TV, radio, iPods, etc. if they interfere with your childs ability to concentrate. Discourage your child from making and receiving calls, texting, or using MSN/Facebook during homework time. Some families have a set time in their home when everyone does homework or reads. 3. Be InvolvedCheck your childs agenda daily. Some teachers have their own website where homework is posted. Children are more likely to complete homework successfully when parents monitor their assignments. Dont do the homework for them as it wont help them to understand or to become confident in their own abilities. A reminder that Kindergarten registration is currently open online and also, as always, through the school. We are offering a full day, every day kindergarten program in the fall of 2013 and are also committed to having a before and after school program. With these two new initiatives, we are asking that you take a moment to ensure that people in our community know of the many great things happening at Drummond Central School. Our kindergarten Open House is being planned for April. More details will follow. We wish everyone a safe March Break.
